Chapter 1: The First Mission
It was a really busy night in Manhattan, New York, but it was busier inside MiB headquarters. Aliens and Agents bustled along, working on cases, signing through with customs to live on the planet, and moving equipment around.
Lydia was working in the Tech Unit, tuning up one of the De-Atomizers for more fire power. Working alongside her was Agent A, her former name was Amelia Matthews, she was transferred from the Los Angeles office a few months prior. She was older than Lydia by ten-fifteen years, but she was still young for MiB.
Agent A: "(watching Lydia working a De-Atomizer) Make sure that you cross the wires, so that way the gun fires properly."
Lydia: "(never looking up, still working on the gun) Not to worry. I've been working on these weapons since I was like, seven, I know what I'm doing."
Lydia crossed the blue and black wires and suddenly the weapon misfired at some equipment on the other side of the room causing a big explosion. Then black exhaust smoke started billowing from the exhaust panel on the rifle and covered Lydia's face with soot.
Lydia: "(coughing from the soot) Dang it! I meant to cross the red and black wires. (Groans) These new series of the De-Atomizers are so complicated. (Slams her tools on the table)"
Agent A: "(trying to cheer up Lydia) Hey! It's alright. Not every technician is perfect. There was this tech rookie I knew once back in L.A., he was so dumb, you can say that his brain was the size of walnut. He tried to make a more powerful EMP device by using a defibrillator in the medical ward. But the EMP short-circuited and blew out the power in the entire L.A. grid. Unfortunately, the power had to go out during Super Bowl XXVI."
Lydia: "(wiping off the soot on her face with a towel) Boy. I'm sure you were glad not to work alongside him."
But before Agent A could answer, Zed, the chief of MiB, walked into the room.
Zed: "I agree with you. Zachery was probably one of the dumbest aliens I ever met, and I've met some not-so-smart beings in my lifetime."
Lydia: "(quickly standing up to face Zed, after realizing that he was in the room) Chief Zed, sir! If you had come to ask about an explosion that just happened here, it was an accident! Just a weapon malfunction. (She said anxiously, then quickly wiping off a smear of soot on her face)"
Zed: "(chuckles) No, I'm not here about that. I'm here about two things. One, Agent A, I'm assigning you to work on a case with E in Brooklyn."
Agent A: "Is it about that little Tarantian from Andromeda II? I thought they couldn't find the little guy."
Zed: "No, we're still looking for that little troublemaker. And it's not that case, is one is a killing earlier at Fulton Ferry State Park. Alien-on-alien."
Agent A: "(sighs) It was probably the Ixions again. You can never trust those oil-loving parasites. I'm on it. (Starts walking out of the room) I'll see you later Lydia."
Zed: "(continues talking after Agent A leaves the room) And now for the second thing.
Kay has returned from the Mexican border, we all need to talk in my office. (Walks out the room and back to his office)"
Lydia takes off her goggles and gloves and follows Zed to his office. Several minutes later, Lydia walked into the big office that stood in the middle of MiB headquarters. Zed was sitting behind his desk, and Kay was sitting nearby with a folder in his hand.
Lydia: "Hey Kay. (she said to Kay as she sat down next to him) Did you find that rogue alien in Mexico?"
Agent K: "Yeah. Turns out, it was Mikey of all people. Dee and I stopped and killed him, but unfortunately Dee handed in his resignation."
Lydia: "(her smile faded into a frown) Really? Aww. That's a shame. Dee was one of the best agents in the agency. (Kay stares at Lydia with a serious look on his face) Besides you of course. (She said sheepishly)"
Agent K: "(smiles and chuckles a little) It's alright, kid. Dee was one of the top agents. And a good friend. He will be missed."
Zed: "Indeed. We'll put his name on the memorial wall. (Clears throat before talking) Now, onto more pressing matters. We received a report of an suicide between Fifth Avenue and East Street, our first responders say it was Cephalapoid, but I want you to confirm it. They also said that there was a witness to this event, an NYPD detective I believe."
Lydia: "A Cephalopoid? Are they the alien race that are incredibly fast, jump really high, and have gills? They come from a planet that's mostly covered with water, so they are born with gills to help them breathe underwater. Kinda like fish here on Earth. But they are also known for their criminal-like activity, since they come from a low income of the cosmos."
Kay and Zed stared dumbfounded at Lydia for her knowledge of an alien race.
Lydia: "What? I'm an honor student in Ms. Cahill's class of Alien History and Culture."
Agent K: "Alright. I'll check it out. Say Lydia, why don't you come along on this one?"
Lydia: "(shocked) Really? (squeals with joy and talks excitedly) Sure! Of course, I'd love too."
Agent K: "Good. You better go change into a suit before we go. And don't forget your glasses."
Lydia: "(standing up from the chair and leaving the room) Yes sir."
After Lydia leaves the room, Kay turns back towards Zed.
Zed: "Are you sure sending out Lydia is a good idea? The kid doesn't have much field experience. This will be her first mission after all."
Agent K: "I'm sure. I know that Lydia will make it through. (He said as he walked towards the door) I'll show her the ropes."
Zed: "Have you told her yet?"
Agent K: "(he stops on his tracks, he knew exactly what Zed was talking about) No, I haven't."
Zed: "You have to tell her about it eventually. It's been over seventeen years, and the girl deserves to know about her heritage."
Agent K: "I'll tell Lydia when the time is right. But, I know that she's not going to take it well. (He said before walking away)"
Several minutes later, Kay walked out of the MiB building and found Lydia waiting by the car; which was a 1987 Ford LTD Crown Victoria. She changed her work uniform to a traditional MiB suit with a white suit and black tie.
Lydia: "This is so exciting! I get to be an agent just like you! (Said Lydia excitedly)"
Kay: "Yes, it could be exciting. But being an agent is top priority, it takes skill, courage, and responsibility. (Kay said as he was getting into the car)"
Lydia: "I'm responsible! I'm always honest with you and the other agents. (Lydia said as she got into the car)"
Kay: "Are you always honest? (He said with a smug look)"
Lydia: "Yes I am! (She exclaimed)"
Kay stares coldly at Lydia, she tries her best not to speak but she couldn't resist.
Lydia: "Okay, okay, maybe not all of the time."
Kay: "Honesty is always the best policy, kid. (Turns the key and starts the car) Now, are you caught up with the case we'll be doing?"
Lydia: "Uh, yes. (Said Lydia as she reached to the backseat and grabbed a file) We're going to the police station to question the detective about his encounter, then follow MiB code 773/I-1 and neuralyse him and any other officers that were there at the scene. And also dispose of any evidence of the encounter, courtesy of our perimeter secure and cleanup crews."
Kay: "(nods his head impressively as he puts on his seatbelt) Very good. So they are teaching you something."
Lydia: "(smiles as she looks at the file again) It says here that the detective's name is James Edwards. (flips through a few pages and sees different pictures of James throughout his life) This looks more than just an ordinary case. Do you know this guy?"
Kay: "(after a pregnant pause) You can say that. (He said as he put the car in drive and they drove off the police station)"
Cuts to the Police Station, James Darrell Edwards III was in an interrogation room giving his statement about the alien that he chased just an hour earlier to a police inspector and a uniformed sergeant. Kay and Lydia waited outside the room to listen in and to confirm their information.
Inspector: "(looks at Edwards' report) 'Perpetrator then blinked two sets of eyelids.' (Looks at James) You mean, blinked with both eyes?"**
Edwards: "No, sir. He blinked one set, then he blinked a completely different set."**
Kay: "A level four Cephalopoid. (he whispers to Lydia, confirming it)"
Sergeant: "You know, like high beams and low beams."**
James just stared at the Sergeant with annoyance.
Inspector: "(looks at Edwards' report) Was that before or after he drew the weapon that you claimed evaporated into a million pieces?"**
Edwards: "After, sir."**
The Sergeant just scoffs.
Inspector: "And uh, why is it that none of the other officers saw either of these two events?"**
Edwards: "With all do respect sir, if some of the other officers would cut the slack and be more mobile for once, maybe they would've been able to keep up."
Lydia sniggers slightly, but tries not to let Kay see.
Kay: "You think that's funny? (he asked)"
Lydia: "Yes, it is. You know it's true about cops. Especially here in New York. (she whispers back)"
Kay: "Well, I don't think so. (he stated, continuing to look forward and listen in)"
Sergeant: "(walking up to James) Edwards, if you were half the man I am…"**
Edwards: "What are you talking about? I am half the man that you are. (He said while looking at the Sergeants gut before looking away)"**
This makes Lydia laugh a little harder, Kay puts his finger over his mouth to tell Lydia to be quiet.
Sergeant: "Hey, what is your problem?"**
Edwards: "My problem is you being all up in my face! That's my problem! (He said standing up and getting face-to-face with the Sergeant)"
Sergeant: "You know, I think he threw him off the roof."**
Edwards: "Oh, really? Maybe you next!"**
Inspector: "(cutting off the Sergeant) Sergeant. I want to talk to you. (he said while walking towards the door)"**
Sergeant: "Ten minutes, take your best shot. Tough guy. (Walks away after the Inspector)"**
Inspector: "Outside. Now."**
The Sergeant walks out of the room.
Edwards: "Take ten minutes on a Stairmaster, you moron. (James said to himself before sitting back down and sighing)"
Kay and Lydia heard all that they needed for the moment and stepped around the corner to call Zed to tell him about their findings. While Kay was talking to Zed, Lydia notices a woman entering the interrogation room with Edwards. Lydia recognized the woman as Dr. Laurel Weaver, she was the Deputy Medical Examiner of the city morgue. Not only did she see a photo of her in the file she looked at earlier, she remembered from Kay's reports that he neuralysed her on several occasions.
Kay: "Alright Zed, we'll keep you informed."
Zed: "You got it, friend. (Kay hangs up the phone)"
Lydia: "(walks up to Kay) Kay. I just saw Dr. Weaver walk into the room with Edwards."
Kay: "Don't worry, Lydia. (puts on his glasses) We'll take care of it. (walks back towards the room with Lydia quickly following him after she put on her glasses)"
They soon faced Laurel after she stepped out into the hallway at a hurried pace.
Kay: "Excuse me. You're Dr. Weaver with the coroner's office working on the John Doe, right?"**
Laurel: "Yes, that's right."**
Kay: "Will you look at this, please?"**
A bright red flash hits Laurel, who stays still in the hallway for a moment before walking away. Then Kay and Lydia step into the room and close the door behind them. Lydia stood by the door to keep watch while Kay walked over to the security camera and unplugged it.
Kay: "Some night, huh?"**
Edwards: "Yeah, some night."**
Kay: "They were gills. Not eyelids. (There was silence for a few seconds before Kay continued) Gills. He was out of breath. (He said while doing an imitation of gills with his hands)"**
Edwards: "Who are you?"**
Lydia: "(walks over to Edwards places a folder on the table) Mr. Edwards, can you confirm that this was the figure that you were chasing from Grand Central to the Guggenheim Museum on Fifth Avenue? (She said after putting a picture of the alien in front of Edwards)"
Edwards: "(looks at the picture, he was shocked that it was the same person, he just scoffs and pushes the photo back to Lydia in annoyance) What is this, some kind of joke or something? Who the heck are you people?"
Lydia: "Before he fell from the roof, did he say anything to you that might have seemed unusual or strange?"
Edwards: "Yeah, he said that the world was coming to an end. (he said as if it was the ridiculous thing he ever heard)"**
Kay: "Did he say when?"**
Edwards: "You're kidding, right?"
Once again, there was silence until Lydia spoke again.
Lydia: "Let me ask you something, Mr. Edwards. Do you think that you would be able to recognize that weapon of his if you saw it again?"
Edwards: "(gives a slight nod) Absolutely."**
Kay: "(ponders to himself for a few moments before walking towards the door) Come on. Let's take a ride."**
Edwards: "(stands up from the chair) Wait, wait a minute. Wait a minute. Look, I got tons of paperwork and..."**
Kay: "Right. It's all done."**
As if right on cue, the Inspector appears with a folder, smiles and gives Edwards the thumbs up.
Inspector: "Good work, Edwards. (Edwards looks at the Inspector, then at Kay as the Inspector walks away)"**
Kay: "You really ran this dude down on foot? That's tough, kid. That's double tough. (Kay said while patting Edwards on the back and walking out of the room)"**
Cuts to the three trio driving through the streets of New York. Kay and Lydia were bringing Edwards to meet a local man who had experience with alien tech and weapons. So far, it was mostly silent until Edwards spoke.
Edwards: "So, who exactly are you with?"**
Both Kay and Lydia say nothing. Edward continues talking.
Edwards: "You both got the plain clothes, the government-issued wheels. I'm guessing, FBI? NSA?"
Kay and Lydia still remain utterly silent.
Edwards: "(leans forward from the backseat) What about you, miss? You seem a little young to work alongside a guy like him. (He said while gesturing towards Kay) Are you like in the Witness Protection Program, or something?"
Lydia just slouches in her seat.
Lydia: "I'm not allowed to disclose that information."
Edwards: "Yeah, well, whoever it is you work for, seems that you're short on funding. (Edwards said while referring to the car)"
Kay: "Nothing's what it seems, kid."
Edwards: "(sarcastically) Oh, yeah, my bad. The '87 Ford LTD. That's a luxury ride. (Speaks normal) C'mon, who ya with?"
Kay: "We're part of a bureau that licenses, monitors and polices alien activity on the planet earth."
Edwards: "Yeah, whatever. (He said while sitting normal again with annoyance)"**
Kay: "We're here. (He says he stops the car and he and Lydia get out of the car. Edwards follows)"**
Edwards looks around. Sees they're standing in front of a Pawn Shop.
Edwards: "This is where we're going?"**
Kay: "Yeah."**
Edwards: "This is Jack Jeebs' spot. He buys from chain snatchers. He doesn't even sell guns."**
Kay: "Really?"**
Edwards: "(sighs) All right, look. I'm going to slide up in here and I'm gonna put my thing down, but when I come back out, I want some real answers."**
Kay: "Okay, go put your thing down."**
And with that, Edwards walks inside the store, leaving Kay and Lydia outside. They looked at each other with annoyance. When Edwards walks inside, he finds Jack Jeebs; the sleazy, sarcastic owner of the Pawn Shop brushing some Rolexes off on the counter. He didn't get intimidated not easily.
Jeebs: "Officer Eduardo. Oh! Hey! How did these get here? I thought I turned these in to the proper authorities."**
Edwards: "Well the way I hear it, Jeebs, you're into something a little hotter than some stolen Rolexes."**
Jeebs: "Well, sure, I'm also a huge crack dealer now, but I still work here 'cause I love the hours."**
Edwards: "(gets angry with Jeebs) I'm talking about guns, smarty pants. Weird ones."
Jeebs: "C'mon, Edwards, what you see is what I got."**
Then the shop's door opens as Lydia walks in.
Lydia: "Why don't you show him the imports, Jeebs?"**
Jeebs: "(tries to act cheerful) W-Why if it isn't my favorite customer! How ya doin' Lydia?"
Lydia: "(sighs) It's good to see you too, Jeebs. Now, are you going to show this guy the goods, or what?"
Jeebs: "(stutters) I-I don't own whatcha talkin' about. I-I don't do that business anymore."
Lydia: "(walks right up of Jeebs and stares at him coldly) Look Jeebs. As much as you are a salesman and a good negotiator, quite frankly, I don't give a darn about it. You and I both know that Kay doesn't like it when you lie. So you better pony up now or things are going to get ugly."
Jeebs: "(stutters) I-I told you. I don't know what ya talking about."
As Lydia was about to speak when the shop's door opened as Kay walked into the room.
Kay: "Why don't you do what she saids, Jeebs?"
At the sound of Kay's voice, Jeebs suddenly goes pale, a look of fear coming over his face.
Jeebs: "H-hiya, Kay. How are you?"**
Kay: "Show him the imports, right now."**
Jeebs: "Yo, I got out of that business a long time ago. (Jeebs said innocently as Lydia walks over to Kay)"**
Kay: "Why do you lie to me, Jeebs. I hate it when you lie."**
Jeebs: "(tries to be serious) Now just, hold on a second…"
Kay: "(aims his gun at Jeebs' head) I'm gonna count to three."**
Edwards, seeing that Kay is getting somewhere, joins in the routine.
Edwards: "He'll do it, Jeebs."**
Kay: "One..."**
Edwards: "I'm telling you, that man does not look stable."**
Kay: "Two..."**
Edwards: "But, you know what? Talk to me. He is just crazy when he's like this."**
Jeebs: "He's always crazy. (Turns to Kay) Why don't you get a massage, take a cruise or…"
KA-BOOM! Kay blows Jeebs' head off and Jeebs' body collapses to the floor and some of the green goo from Jeebs' head splatters onto Lydia's face. Edwards is shocked.
Kay: "Three."**
Lydia: "Ewww! So gross! (wipes some of the goo off her face)"
Edwards pulls his own weapon and points it at Kay's head.
Edwards: "Drop down the weapon and put your hands on your head! (He shouted)"**
Kay: "I warned him. (He assuringly)"
Edwards: "Drop the weapon! (He shouted again)"**
Kay: "You warned him."**
Edwards: "Don't make me kill you. (He said with a serious tone)"**
Lydia: "Will you relax? His head always grows back."
Jeebs: "(irritated) You insensitive jerk!"
Edwards whirls around in shock to see Jeebs' body, growing another head within the span of a few seconds.
Jeebs: "D'ya have any idea how much that stings?"**
Lydia: "(sighs) Believe me Jeebs, it's not pleasant for us either. (She said while wiping the goo off her face) Now, I highly suggest that you show us the merchandise, otherwise Kay is going to make you lose another head. (She said as Kay powered up his weapon again)"
Jeebs panicky lowers his hand and hits a button on the underside of the counter. A loud buzz is heard as a bunch of panels throughout the shop flip over to reveal all kinds of alien weapons. All of them were bizarre, otherworldly weapons of all shapes and sizes.
Kay: "Mr. Edwards?"**
Edwards, still dazed by Jeebs' regrown head, glances down at all the weapons.
Edwards: "Right there. The one in the middle. (he said while pointing at a gun in the middle of the display case)"**
Kay and Lydia look at Jeebs with serious faces.
Kay: "You sold a reverberating carbonizer with mutate capacity to an unlicensed cephalopod? Jeebs, you moron! (Kay said accusingly)"
Jeebs: "He looked alright to me."**
Lydia: "A weapon that powerful is only used by skilled assassins, so there must've been a assassination in play. Who's the target?"
Jeebs: "You know, I don't know."**
Kay raises the weapon again, threatening.
Kay: "Darn it Jeebs!"
Jeebs: I DON'T KNO-HOW!"**
Kay lowers his gun, gestures to the shelf full of weapons.
Kay: "Alright, let's confiscate it. All of it. And I want you on the next transport off this rock or I'm gonna shoot you where it don't grow back."**
Jeebs nods as Kay and Lydia walk towards the door to exit the shop.
Edwards: "Yeah and uh... and I'm gonna be back to talk about them Rolexes. (He said still shaken and then walks towards the door as well)"**
Edwards walks out of the shop, trying to get the day's events straight in his head.
Edwards: "The eyelids, fine... and the jumping thing... and the gun... okay, but the head? (he muttered to himself)"
Kay and Lydia walk up next to Edwards and stay silent for a few seconds while they watch two people ride by on a bicycle.
Kay: "Searching for a handle on the moment? (He asked) A place to file this in?"
Edwards: "You see, a head doesn't do that man, it doesn't just grow back. What happened back there was a freak show! (looks up at the sky) What is going on?"
Kay doesn't answer and stays silent for a few seconds before speaking.
Kay: "I can't help you, kid. Only comfort I can offer is my promise that tomorrow morning, you won't remember a thing."**
Edwards: "Oh, no. I'm gonna remember this for a long, long time."
Kay was about to pull the neuralyzer from his pocket, he hesitated for a brief moment. He knew that this particular neuralyzation was different from all the others. Lydia gives Kay as an assuring face, she knew the importance of this case since Kay explained it to her earlier. The two put on their sunglasses.
Kay: "Have you ever seen one of these, son?"**
He raises the neuralyzer and the bright red light flashes as the scene crossfades to white.
Crossfades to a Chinese restaurant where Kay, Lydia, and Edwards were. Kay and Lydia had set the table as if they were there all night. Kay was laughing about a joke he was telling.
Kay: "(laughs really hard) So… So, she looks over at her husband, then she sets it back down in her lap and she says, 'Honey, this one's eating my popcorn!' (He busts out laughing)"**
Lydia sniggers as she takes a slip of her water. Edwards, who sat across from the both of them, who was completely disoriented. He looks down. There was a half-eaten order of broccoli beef and several empty bottles of beer on the table in front of him.
Kay: "(who was still laughing) Did you get it? This one's eating my… (continues to laugh until he checks his watch) Oh, I got to go. Thanks for the egg rolls, kid. (He said with the seriousness back in his voice)"**
Edwards: "Hey wait, wait a minute. Who are you?"**
Kay: "You see what I mean about tequila? You're a very bright young man, James, but you need to lay off the sauce. (looks at Lydia) I trust that my partner, this beautiful young woman here, will keep you company for the rest of the night. If it's okay with you. (He says while patting Lydia on the shoulder)"
Edwards: "Uhh… Sure. Yeah, she could stay."
Kay: "Good. (he leans over to Lydia and whispers into her ear) Just keep it simple. (he gets up and walks out of the restaurant)"
Lydia: "(clears throat before speaking) Hi. My name is Lydia. (Reaches out her hand) Lydia Martin."
Edwards: "(shakes Lydia's hand) James Edwards."
Lydia: "I'm sure that you're quite confused about the night's events."
Edwards: "That's one word for it. (he said as the waitress walked over to the table)"
Waitress: "Would you like another beer? (she asked to Edwards)"
Edwards: "No thanks. Coffee, please. (he replied)"
The waitress looks at Lydia.
Lydia: "No, thank you. I'm good. (The waitress walks off. Edwards looks back at Lydia) Mr. Edwards, I'll just cut right down to the chase. I am aware that while you try to do your best at your job, the other police officers don't really appreciate you, and you also have a problem with authority."
Edwards: "(scoffs) What are you talking about, girl? I'm an easy going guy. Sure, my job may not be perfect, but that's the way life is."
Lydia: "But not without complications I imagine. Am I right? (Edwards doesn't answer this, but Lydia continues talking) I know you have an incredible sense of skills, skills that are useful in the field. But you do have a problem at socializing with other people, and given your family history, I'm surprised it's not worse. (Edwards remains silent. Lydia reaches into her jacket and grabs a business card) If you want answers, go to this address. Make sure you are there tomorrow at 9:00 sharp. (She hands the card to Edwards and places some cash on the table) Thank you for your time. (She gets up and walks out of the restaurant)"
Edward looked at the card, there were just three little letters in the middle: "MiB". Edwards looks at it, puzzled. He turns the card over and sees a address on the back that said: "504 Battery Drive".
Hello everyone! Traininspector11 G2 here. This is my third FanFiction story here on this website!
After seeing all of the Men in Black films, and several episodes of the cartoon series, I decided to write one of my own. This saga will stretch from the first MiB movie in 1997, all the way to MiB: International 2019. With additional chapters as well.
If you see lines with two stars (**) next to them, it means that the line was taken directly from the movie. Also, all of the characters in this story are the same as the movies, with a few additional characters. I only own Lydia and a few other OC characters in this story.
TRIVIA: Some of the dialogue in this chapter is from the actual script of MiB 1997.
There are many references to the MiB universe in this chapter; the Tarantian (later named Luca) from Andromeda II that was seen in MiB: International film is mentioned. As well as the oil-loving Ixion species from the Men in Black cartoon series.
Lydia was originally played by Kristen Drust (who portrayed Mary-Jane Watson in the Sam Raimi Spider Man films) who is seen in the poster of this story, before I changed it to Linda Cardellini. She's best known for portraying Velma Dinkley in the 2002 & 2004 Scooby Doo films, Laura Barton (Clint Barton's wife) in the MCU, and voicing Wendy Corduroy on Gravity Falls.
This chapter is dedicated to Rip Torn (who portrayed Chief Zed in the MiB films), who passed away in 2019.
Lydia is portrayed by Linda Cardellini in this saga.
Agent A is portrayed by Helen Hunt in this saga.
I hope that you enjoy this first chapter! Please read and review!
