ODESSA

"Where did you guys get a kiddie pool?"

Leah had her hands on her hips and her head tilted to the side as she looked at Kim and I sitting in the pink flower patterned plastic pool as we sipped on tea.

After Kim and I had gotten off work we decided to hit the dollar store together and we went a little crazy with our tips from the day.

"Leah get in here!" I yelled, pretending to splash her as Kim yelped and moved out of the way.

She just rolled her eyes but did saunter closer to grab some chips sitting in one of the lawn chairs. "You guys are ridiculous."

"We are not ridiculous." I declared, pulling down my trashy pink and bedazzled camouflage sunglasses we found at the gas station. "We are fun."

Kim was wearing a very goofy looking plastic coconut bra and I had on a straw cowboy hat. "Where are the guys?"

"Jared, Quil and Embry are on patrol." Kim spoke, sipping on her glass of iced tea that had a little umbrella sitting in it.

"What about Paul?" Leah said, raising her eyebrows and looking over at me.

I shrugged. "No clue."

There had been no contact between us since last night.

Kim snorted into her drink. "Probably picking out an engagement ring."

I splashed water at her and Leah smiled. "Stop it! Speaking of weddings, when is the official date?"

"October 20th."

"Holy shit that's soon Kim! We need to start planning."

She blushed and adjusted her coconuts. "I know. Just with Emily about to have the baby and that stupid bloodsucker on the loose we've just been distracted."

"Emily is going to be just fine." Leah rolled her eyes and plopped down on the ground next to us, stuffing her mouth with Lays.

"Is there anything we can do to help?" I said, surveying my toes in the sunlight. I had just painted them a glittery green color.

"Well you guys need to get bridesmaid dresses."

I gasped and squealed then tackled her in a hug, splashing water everywhere. "Are you serious! Ahhh!"

Leah groaned. "You're torturing me."

I adjusted my cowboy hat. "I am finally going to see you in a dress? Oh my god this is definitely going in the scrapbook."

"You don't even have a scrapbook Odessa."

"I do now!" I exclaimed, grabbing the disposable camera laying next to the pool. I quickly snapped a pic of Leah. She was frowning with a mouthful of chips squinting in the sunlight.

PAUL

I watched Odessa try to do a cartwheel from the edge of the tree line in my wolf form. Seeing her in her yellow bikini made it hard to think any safe thoughts the others were at risk of hearing.

Momentarily distracted by the clothing line holding a pair of particularly lacy underwear amongst dresses and shirts I almost missed her trying to light a cigarette with a blowtorch from my shop.

Jesus Christ.

I saw Leah sniff the air and turn in my direction. She scoffed and went back to looking at the girls laughing in the plastic pool.

Of course Odessa had on a ridiculous pair of sunglasses and was having the time of her life. I smiled internally at her momentary happiness.

Whatever made her happy made me happy.

Ugh.

I was a sappy piece of shit for that.

With much difficulty I turned away from my half naked imprint, convincing myself that she was in safe hands with Leah. I had to go pick up my truck from the Clearwaters house.

We once again had lost scent of the vampire on the loose, which was frustrating beyond belief. We had no idea what this guys intentions were for getting so close to our borders.

But that's the thing with vampires, they want what they can't have.

ODESSA

"I think we're gonna end up banging soon."

"Duh."

I stuttered and gaped at Leah. "I didn't even say who I was talking about!"

Leah rolled her eyes and continued making herself a cup of tea. "As if there was anyone else."

I threw a bra at her. "There are plenty of people I could be about to bang right now."

We were in my trailer and she was waiting for me to get dressed. Kim had left to go change and now Leah was sprawled across my bed flipping through one of my apothecary books.

I picked up a sundress that had a particularly low neckline and held it up against me. "I'm actually talking about Quil thank you very much."

She snorted into her cup of Earl Grey. "I think that spot is taken."

"What? By who? Quil isn't even dating anyone is he?"

I could see Leah look at me out of the corner of her eye. "No."

I frowned at her suspiciously. "Then what do you mean that spot is taken?"

"So why do you think you and Paul are about to get it on again?"

She was very obviously trying to change the subject for some reason.

I took off my big tshirt and threw on the floral dress and surveyed myself in the mirror. "I don't know. Things are getting really tense." Smoothing my dress down I turned to her. "Honestly I think we just need to get it out of our system and then we can go back to being friends. These sort of things happen with two single people sometimes"

Leah looked over at me like that was the stupidest thing she'd ever heard. "That is quite literally the most stupid thing I've ever heard come out of your mouth."

"What? It's not like it can be that great that we can't stop."

She shook her head. "Odessa trust me when I say that there is no going back to friends after that."

I threw on some sneakers and we headed outside. "Then I don't know what to do Leah! I don't want to be more than friends with Paul it will ruin things. Plus I have so much going on right now."

"Odessa you don't have anything going on right now."

I playfully whacked her shoulder. "Rude!"

"I think you're just scared if it goes further you won't be able to run."

"I am not scared."

"You are totally scared."

We started walking down the road to Sam and Emily's house. They were having dinner for everyone. "Okay well if you think we can't stop then how come you're doing just fine just messing around with that girl huh?"

Leah sighed. "That's different. I haven't impr- I mean I haven't felt the need to start a relationship."

I stepped in front of her tall frame. "Leah I swear to god if you don't tell me what imprinting is right now I'm going to lose it. I don't care if it's not your place anymore. You're my best friend and I'm tired of everyone tiptoeing around it. I already know you guys turn into giant wolves I don't know what other secrets you really need to keep from me."

"It's really not my place Odessa!"

"Stop saying that!"

She huffed and put her hands in her hair for a second before looking around. "Okay I'll tell you the shortened version of it."

I looked at her expectantly. She looked like she was struggling to find the right words.

"It's basically when the ancestors tell you that you've found a good match to carry on the wolf gene."

I just stared back at her. We were still standing in the middle of the dirt road. "You're kidding. That's it? Then why is everyone making such a big deal out of it?"

Leah looked around at the trees again. "That's really all I can tell you about it I'm sorry."

We continued walking. I was still processing her words.

"Is that why you haven't come out to the pack? Because they will be mad you won't carry on the gene?"

A sad look fell upon her face. "No it's not just that, it's just kind of a big deal to imprint on someone."

I was starting to get a foreboding feeling from her words. "What do you mean big deal? Does it not happen for-"

I got cut off by the sound of a car rolling up next to us. I looked over to see Paul in his truck.

Leah gave him a glare then gave me a softer glance. "Y'all can carry on this conversation, I'll meet you at the house."

She walked towards the woods where I'm sure she would phase. I turned around and got into the truck without a word.

We sat there for a minute in silence.

Paul shifted gears and we started driving down the road.

"So I know what imprinting is now."

I jolted forward as Paul slammed on the breaks. He threw the truck in park and stared at me with a look of shear panic. "What?"

I shrugged. "That's why our hormones are so out of control around each other right? It's no big deal I don't know why you didn't tell me sooner."

Paul looked like he was at a loss for words.

"It's really not a big deal. Leah told me all about it."

He started to slightly shake in the small space. "No big deal?"

"Yeah. I mean just because your ancestors decided we would be a good match for making babies doesn't mean we have to act on it." I laughed nervously, not sure if I was trying to convince him or myself more. "That's probably why things have gotten a little strange..."

I was peering at him now to see what he would say next.

Nothing.

"...right?"

He was starting to shake more and looked like he was focusing on breathing. "What. The. Fuck." He started through gritted teeth. "Did Leah tell you?"

"That's it. Just that it's some sign we can carry on the gene."

"Odessa..."

I looked around us. We were pulled over on the side of a dirt road in the middle of nowhere. Looking over at his shirtless form I suddenly felt hot.

Maybe it was time to act on something.

Taking a deep breath I unbuckled my seat belt and crawled over to him and straddled his lap.

He stared at me in stunned silence.

Leaning forward I pressed a small kiss to his neck. He still didn't move. Trailing my hands down his chest I reached the waistband of his basketball shorts. I could see he was already hard underneath.

"Odessa?"

He was searching my eyes as if it would help him figure out what was going on inside my head. Little did he know I didn't even know what was going on except for the fact that I was wearing a dress and nothing underneath and I was now trying to pull down his shorts.

He put both hands on either side of my face and forced me to look at him. "What are you doing?"

"Shorts. Off."

I couldn't complete a full sentence right now even if I tried. I just needed him inside of me now.

He complied in a stunned silence.

Holy shit.

Paul was huge.

Which I had known, but not to this extent. I looked up at him and saw he was still searching my face.

PAUL

God help me.

We were staring at each other. Not moving and not saying a word now.

Slowly I reached my hand up and slid it up her thigh. Her breath hitched as I went under the hem of her dress. Finally my fingers reached her and we both gasped. She was really wet.

"Fuck." I muttered.

I rested my forehead against hers. Think Paul. Think.

She slowly started to lift herself and I realized what she was about to do. "Wait."

There was probably only a good inch separating us.

"Just this once Paul." She breathed out.

I had to stop her now or things were going to get very bad very fast.

But not before I helped her ease some frustration. I slipped my fingers back underneath her and began to rub her slowly. She let out a shuddering sigh.

"Odessa. It won't just be once."

She let out a small whimper.

I slipped a finger inside her and she had to steady herself on my shoulders. I continued to rub on her and she couldn't do anything but keep her forehead pressed against mine as her body started to shake.

Now it was my turn to lower my mouth down to her neck. I grazed my teeth lightly along her jugular. "Once we start this there's no going back."

She bucked against my fingers and I could feel her starting to tremble more as I kissed her neck. I wanted nothing more than to let myself slip inside her. It was taking everything in me to stop myself.

Whimpering again she started to move against me and pant more. "Please."

I bent my head down and bit gently on her nipple through her dress. She cried out softly.

"You don't know how bad I want you."

Suddenly her back arched and she let out a small moan and she road my fingers. I could feel her convulse around them. The feeling almost made me come myself.

I hissed through my clenched teeth as she calmed down and looked up at me. Her face was flushed and dazed. "Paul?"

I wanted to put myself inside her so bad I couldn't think straight. Instead I brushed a strand of hair from her face and gently lifted her off of me and placed her on the seat.

She looked down at her her hands in her lap. "Did you not want me?"

I just stared at her. "Odessa. Do you see me right now? Obviously I want you."

She looked down at my painful erection and started to lower her head down towards it.

I swiftly grabbed her shoulders and pushed her back up.

Jesus Christ she was going to kill me.

"I mean it when I say it won't be just once."

Odessa looked at me with a confused expression.

"And it's not going to be in a truck on the side of the road. It's going to be where no one can interrupt because I'm going to do things to you that I can't even describe."

She blushed and looked away.

"Now put on your seatbelt we have to go to Sam and Emily's.

ODESSA

What. The. Ever. Loving. Fuck.

Paul just made me orgasm in like two minutes with just his hands.

Now we're driving to Sam and Emily's like nothing happened. I subtly looked over to him. He had pulled his shorts back up but I could still see how turned on he was.

"I can see you looking at me Odessa. Stop freaking out."

"I'm not freaking out."

I was definitely freaking out.

In fact I was so freaked out I was thinking about jumping out of the moving vehicle to get away from Paul. What the hell was I thinking even starting that in the first place? What happened to me telling Leah we were going to ignore the imprint and be friends?

Friends did not almost fuck in the car on the way to lunch.

He took one of his hands off the steering wheel and reached it towards mine. I just stared at it.

Are we holding hands now?

I was about to start hyperventilating when we finally pulled up to Sams house. Looking at my reflection in the passenger mirror I tried to smooth down my hair as best as I could so I didn't look like I just get fucking finger blasted by Paul Lahote.

Speaking of Paul he was sitting still looking straight ahead. He had retracted his hand from me and now looked almost... sad?

"Did I do something wrong?"

We could see Quil playing with Claire in the front yard.

"No Odessa, you didn't do anything wrong."

He looked defeated and I frowned, guilt crawling all over my skin. "I'm sorry Paul I didn't mean to cross any boundaries I just thought-"

"No you didn't think." He interrupted. "For you this is just sex and then you're going to run away, leaving me in the dust so you can pretend like nothing ever happened."

"Paul I-"

"I know how this is going to end Odessa. For gods sake you won't even hold my hand, how am I supposed to expect you'll accept the imprint."

I watched him with my mouth hanging open as he got out of the truck and walked towards the house. Checking my reflection once more I got out as well and walked around the side towards the backyard, where I made a beeline for Leah.

She looked at me with raised brows as I looked around at everyone, paranoid they would see how flustered I was. "Leah I fucked up really bad."

"What happened?" She whispered, ducking her head and looking around as well. Everyone must have still been inside the house.

"I tried to have sex with Paul and he made me see stars and now he's pissed off."

"YOU WHAT?"

"Shhh!" I hushed her. Embry and Jared were lumbering out the back carrying huge casserole dishes, looking at us curiously.

Behind them stood Paul in the doorway, glaring straight at me.

"He does look pretty pissed off."

"I know." I hissed. I tried to give him a pleading look with my eyes.

He simply turned around and a moment later we heard the sound of a truck starting and driving off.

Leah looked down at me. "Are you okay?"

I was distraught. He just left because he was so mad about what happened. "I just don't understand. One moment he was telling me he wanted to do things right with me and the next moment he's telling me I can't even hold his hand and it's never going to work."

"You wouldn't even hold his hand Odessa? Cmon."

I gaped at her. "Now you're on his side?"

"Just hold the mans hand for once. He's in love with you. He had been since the first time he met you."

"What? Leah why didn't you tell me this earlier?"

She rolled her eyes. "I wanted things to happen organically but apparently you can't do anything else but self destruct."

"Leah why are you saying that?"

She sighed. "I'm sorry that was mean but seriously you can't just play with his emotions like that. He can't help how he feels and there's no use denying that you feel the same anymore."

"I thought it was just the imprint thing. I don't understand."

I couldn't breathe again. Everyone was chattering and acting like everything was normal but I knew they could hear us if they chose to.

Emily walked towards us now with concern on her face. "Are you okay?"

I blinked back tears. "I'm good. Do you have any alcohol around here?"

Leah scoffed besides me. "And now the first thing you're going to do is drink. Typical."

Emily winced. "No im sorry. I haven't kept any in the house since I got pregnant."

I looked down at her bulging belly. "Is Sam your imprint?"

Her eyes widened and she looked up at Leah, who just nodded her head. "Um. Yes he is."

"Why is imprinting such a big deal? Can't you just find another on? Do imprints have a choice in this?"

Now Leah was slowly shaking her head no at Emily, as if to say don't say anything else.

I was getting angry now. "This is way more big of a deal than just carrying on the gene isn't it?"

They both remained silent.

"I'm leaving."

Emily started to protest but Leah rested an arm on her shoulder. "No. Let her leave. This is what she wants."

Holding back tears I turned away and started walking towards the woods.

I didn't know what I wanted but it certainly wasn't this.
