Chapter 7/ Rescued?

Astro's POV

On instinct, my arm cannon took form. I had just locked the door as the shuddering shriek echoed through the room where I was minutes ago. Did he see me? I begged silently in my head that he didn't. As my core spun out of control, so did my cannon, the faint hum of the charge reacting to my sudden adrenaline. A slight cooling trickled down my spine, telling me I would be sweating profusely if I was human. I held on to the ladder in front of me and softly placed my ear on the door.

The sound of objects being thrown across the room could be heard indefinitely, along with the shrieking sound of the Wraithe. At first, the screams were deafening and full of uncontrolled fury, but soon after, they started to turn into wailing and high pitched.

I raised my eyebrows. Okay.

Suddenly, the Wraithe went missing and was replaced by a little boy who was throwing mindless junk everywhere because he didn't get what he wanted. My hand covered my mouth as I tried not to giggle under my breath. Yeah. keep throwing a fit, see where it gets you-

"Honestly, Milo, control yourself! We have to clean up more than we have to when you're done throwing your little fits." I let go of my mouth. Someone else was in the room. Another Wraithe? The man's voice was rough and prickly, like he had been shouting in the stands at a football game.

"I'm sorry master, I didn't think the boy would escape. I thought I had him and the others immovable."

"Obviously, you didn't! I told you, the boy is smart. I ask you to do one thing and you've already blown it. Use the human Polaris to send a signal to the closest city, contain the humans and wait until me or the others come. Not two seconds later, and you're already overtaken by your arrogance. You know how much we need those humans to survive!"

There was a slight pause. "What about the boy?"

"Leave the boy to me. Me and the others will go spread out and bring them back."

"Please, let me go with you!"

"No..." The dark rough voice sneered. "You've already done enough damage. You will go back to looking for the other humans and bring me back good news."

"Master, you know I've been looking for them for months and they seem nowhere to be found. They might as well have died off.'

"Keep looking! I know they're out there somewhere. Do not come back until you have what I want, or I'll have your head, literally."

Milo whimpered out a small, "Yes, master."

"Good."

That was the last thing I heard and then silence.

Polaris was a setup. Polaris was a setup and we ran right into it I thought as I climbed down the ladder carefully, hopefully not to be heard on the other side. I limped towards the infirmary door and closed it shut. And for extra caution, bent a piece of metal and twisted it through the handle. I knew it wouldn't keep the Wraithes out permanently, but it was the best I could do, for now.

Now, all I wanted was sleep. Sleep, sleep, and just sleep. I felt myself groan against the door; my eyelids suddenly grew heavy. I was pretty sure the only thing keeping me from falling over was my hand on the wall.

I turned the corner to see my family still sleeping undisturbed in their tiny cots. Neither one of them had stirred, their chests slowly rising... then falling. They were safe, for now. For now. For now? Safe? As long as they were here, they were never safe. I had done a pretty lousy job at keeping them safe. That's why I couldn't let myself fall asleep, no matter how much my body wanted it, or needed it for that matter. I needed to find something.

I slowly made my way to the other side of the room with the controls. A simple desk stood in front of it, and on it, sat a radio transmitter. It must have been the one they sent the signal through to Metro City by 'Polaris.' I frowned. The only difference was that it had a hole punched through the middle, the wires gaping at me. It was useless. 'Circuits."

After fifteen minutes of searching for anything that could help us, nothing. Most of the controls were broken or too rusted to turn. The cabinets that occupied the one wall were mostly empty, empty bottles, broken prescription bottles, shattered needles. Empty.

The one good thing I found was; blankets. I sighed, maybe... maybe sleep wouldn't be so bad. My eyelids didn't protest when they started to droop again. I took all the blankets in the cabinet and draped one over Reno, then Zane, then my Dad, then Cora. I literally dropped like a sack of useless junk next to her cot, feeling as if Hamegg had zapped me with his laser device.

My eyes cautiously took in her face, her sooty eyelashes resting softly against her cheeks, her lips slightly parted; she looked so peaceful. She didn't deserve to be here. She deserved to be back home, surrounded by her loved ones and not here surrounded by death... they all did.

"I'm sorry." And with the remaining strength I had in me, I reached up and touched my lips to her forehead. A feather of a kiss.

Not two minutes later, I was out, lying next to the cot, with my head resting close to Cora's.

Sometime in the night, well it could be anytime of the day down here and still look like night, something was different; I was moving. Not only that, but someone else was supporting my weight. I don't know how long I was asleep for. A jolt of surprise went through me as remember no one picking me up. I cracked my eyes open; I was thrown over someone's shoulder. We were moving quickly but furtive through the darkened hallway while tall figures followed on either side of us, all dressed in dark clothing head to toe.

I began to buck in the man's grasp, "What's go- mmgh," The figure closest to me stopped whatever they were doing and slammed their hand over my mouth. The man, it appeared to be, lowered his head close to mine to reveal a slit that had been cut into the thick material that covered his whole head; human eyes glared back at me. He whispered agitatedly through the thick mask, "Keep your mouth shut, boy, unless you want the whole legion of Wraithes upon us." My fear began to dwindle. They weren't Wraithes, I internally let out a sigh of relief. Well, if they weren't Wraithes, who were these guys? I got a strong feeling that they did not trust us and they did not want us here, specially this one man, that and my hands were tied. I narrowed my eyes at him as he roughly let go of my face.

It didn't a cured to me that everyone around us had stopped during our little exchange till I looked up and then we were moving again. I glared at my tied hands, I could of broke the strands right then and now, but that would also result in loud exchanges and chaos... Yeah, I would reveal myself later.

Waking through the narrow hallways took twenty minutes, but it felt like an hour. The man's shoulder dug into my stomach the entire time and he smelled like he hadn't showered in a month. I tried to give him the message that I could walk but he didn't loosen his hold and instead muttered, "You just slow us down." I wasen't sure if I was meant to hear it or not, but I grumbled anyway.

Through the journey, my dad was the first to come around, soon after he was given the same message as me; not as unfriendly as mine but he got it. He met eye contact with me and gave a once over, I gave him a simple nod; 'I'm okay.' He gave me a nod of his own, satisfied. Soon the others awoke and they were all told the same message; 'Keep quiet and the Wraithes won't hear us.'
