Albus Dumbledore had been looking over the list of new students and checking over the news of the murderer Sirius Black when he heard a small cough from the middle of his office. He looked up to see what greatly resembled a death eater at first glance.
Dumbledore felt his eyes widen slightly in fear, but then he took notice of how the person wasn't making any move to fight, and they were carrying a bag. He couldn't tell whether they were male or female, nor their age, but Dumbledore was sure they must be pretty old if they could omit such power when all they were doing was staring at him.
The person was wearing a white animal mask and a long white robe. The robe's hood was pulled low over their head and it reached just above their nose. They also had a black bag that hung loosely over their shoulder. The person stared at Dumbledore for a while before he started to glance around the office.
Dumbledore watched as the person's eyes settled on Fawkes. Fawkes was a phoenix who loved everyone that was a good person, a wonderful judge of character. Dumbledore raised his eyebrows as Fawkes squawked angrily at the person and fluffed up his feathers as if trying to get away, but not being able to.
Dumbledore had years of experience reading Fawkes' body language, and this told him that the person had done bad things but was not a bad person. The person jerked his head back towards Dumbledore and walked over to stand at the front of his desk.
"Excuse me, sir?" The person said in a cold tone. Dumbledore looked at him with a bewildered expression and motioned for them to continue. "Do you know where I am?"
"You do not know where you are?" Dumbledore asked, even more confused than ever. The person shook their head. "You are at Hogwarts, a school for witchcraft and wizardry." Dumbledore explained, waiting for a reaction, but none came.
"I see. May I ask what land we are in?" Dumbledore was currently trying to figure out whether this mysterious figure was good or evil, so he answered purely to see what else they would say.
"You are in England."
"England?" The person asked, finally letting curiosity leak into his voice.
"Yes, London, England."
"Where is England?" Dumbledore was quite puzzled as to how this mysterious fellow hadn't heard of England.
"England is in Europe." There was no response, just a slight tilt of the head. "Earth? Are you not from this world?" Dumbledore concluded, slightly sarcastically.
"Probably not. I am from Konoha, the village hidden in the leaves." There was pride in their voice as they said this. Dumbledore's eyebrows shot up in surprise.
"Do you know how to get back to Konoha?" Dumbledore asked, concerned for this person even though he didn't even know his face.
"No, but I do know how I got here." They said, and Dumbledore motioned for him to continue. "There was a sort of shimmering ball right over the ocean. I touched it and it sent me here."
"I see. That sounds like some sort of teleportation device. It could be a transparent portkey, but to travel between worlds?" Dumbledore mumbled to himself, almost forgetting about his guest.
"Excuse me, sir, but what is a 'portkey'?" They asked, interrupting his musings.
"Oh! Do you not have magic in your world? Or are you a muggle?" Dumbledore asked.
"Magic? You mean like chakra? What is a muggle?"
"Sorry, your world must have different methods of using magic. In this world, we have wizards and witches who are able to make things float or change the shapes of things and many other things as well. What is this chakra?"
"Wizards and witches…" The stranger mumbled before answering Dumbledore's question. "Chakra is the energy that everything and everyone has within them. If you practice and use the energy in order to fight or heal then you are called a shinobi or ninja."
"Ninja? How interesting! Do all ninja wear your mask?" Dumbledore exclaimed in excitement over learning new information.
"Not all of them. I am wearing an ANBU uniform. It is a group of the most powerful ninja."
"What does ANBU stand for?" Dumbledore asked, deciding to learn as much as he can in this conversation.
"Ansatsu Senjutsu Tokushu Butai. Translated to this language, it would be 'Special Assassination and Tactical Squad. We work directly under the Hokage, or our leader, and do whatever dangerous missions they ask of us."
"So, you are an assassin?" Dumbledore asked, slightly wary, but this would explain Fawkes' reaction.
"Among other things. I only kill unless ordered to, so you are in no danger." The person reassured Dumbledore.
"Well, I must say this is an interesting turn of events. Oh, I forgot to introduce myself. I am Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, headmaster of Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry."
"Nice to meet you, Mr. Dumbledore. Since I see no harm in doing so, I shall tell you my name as well. I am Hatake Kakashi, my family name is said first in my culture." The person now known as Kakashi said.
"Yes, a pleasure to meet you too. I don't mean to be rude, but are you male or female?" Dumbledore asked, slightly embarrassed that he hasn't been able to tell their gender the entire conversation.
"I am male." Kakashi said.
"Thank you, Mr. Hatake. I am guessing that you need some help in getting back to your world, correct?" Dumbledore asked, and Kakashi nodded. "Well, since I am so curious about your world and culture, how about we strike a deal. You tell me about how your world works and what type of things Ninja do, and I'll give you unlimited access to the Hogwarts library, the largest library in Great Britain. I'll also help you with any other things you may need, like a place to stay."
"I'm very grateful for your generous offer, but how would you keep me hidden in a school?" Kakashi asked, bringing that matter to Dumbledore's attention.
"Oh, well you could hide as an assistant librarian. But, I must ask you to take off that mask since it is rather suspicious looking." Dumbledore suggested, not really expecting Kakashi to actually take off the mask.
To his surprise, the shinobi reached up and untied the near invisible strings, making the mask fall into his hand. Dumbledore's eyes widened as he took in Kakashi's face. There wasn't actually very much to take in, because the bottom half of his face from the bridge of his nose and lower was hidden by a black mask, and his left eye was covered by a black headband with a metal plate on it. The only visible portion of his face had a single grey eye and a dark grey eyebrow that sat perfectly above. He had long dark eyelashes that cast a shadow on his cheek, and his single visible eye held experience and loss.
"How old are you, Mr. Hatake?" Dumbledore asked, slightly worried by the young looking corner of his face.
"I am currently thirteen years old. Please do not doubt my abilities, I have been in ANBU for almost a year now and have been a fully qualified ninja since I was five years old." Kakashi said, surprising Dumbledore.
"You must have remarkable abilities, Mr. Hatake. Your age could work to our advantage, however, you may have to do something you might not like." Dumbledore said, hoping that Kakashi wouldn't get mad at him for this. Kakashi visibly tensed and waited for Dumbledore to continue.
"I think you could disguise yourself as a student and I would personally give you permission to access the restricted section of the library." Dumbledore said and Kakashi stared at him for a moment.
"How could a thirteen year old disguise as a student? I am much too old." Kakashi said.
"Mr. Hatake, we start our education at the age of eleven and you would usually graduate at the age of seventeen." Dumbledore explained, making Kakashi's eyebrow raise slightly in surprise.
"Seriously? We start at age eight and end at eleven, usually." Kakashi informed Dumbledore.
"So, you must be somewhat of a special case, then?" Dumbledore asked, and Kakashi nodded.
"I started at the age of four and graduated school at five. Then I passed the Chunin exams when I was six. I became a Jounin at the age of ten and ANBU right before I turned thirteen." Kakashi said, listing the ranks of ninja as he went.
"Is your other mask also part of a uniform?" Dumbledore asked, surprised at the growth rate of this boy. Kakashi shook his head, surprising Dumbledore slightly. "Then do you have to wear it?"
"I always wear this. My closest friends have never even seen what is underneath, so no matter what, I shall wear this mask." Kakashi said.
"And what about the headband?" Dumbledore asked.
"This is just there to hide an injury." Kakashi answered, pushing up the headband to reveal a gruesome and jagged scar that went from his right eyebrow to just underneath his mask. It was slightly pink and looked fairly recent.
"May I ask when you got that injury?" Dumbledore asked.
"I got it last year on a mission. There is an eye underneath, but when I use it, it takes up a lot of my energy since it has certain special abilities." Dumbledore nodded, thinking that it was a lot like Moody's eye, just harder to maintain.
"How interesting. Well, I'm sure you are a wizard, seeing as you can see Hogwarts, so I'll ask one of the teachers to bring you to Diagon Alley and you can get your school supplies and wand. You must be quite the prodigy, so I have no doubt you will be able to quickly read through all of the school materials."
"Thank you very much, Mr. Dumbledore. If there is ever anything I can do for you, then I will definitely try and help to my utmost abilities." Kakashi said, bowing slightly at Dumbledore.
"It's no problem, and please call me Professor because this is a school. I'll set up a room for you to stay in before you go to Diagon Alley and then you'll have to stay at the Leaky Cauldron." Dumbledore said.
"Of course, Professor Dumbledore. May I ask if you have anything for lunch?" Kakashi asked.
"Lunch? It's nearly dinner time! Our times must be different. I hope you'll be able to get your sleep schedule fixed before school starts." Dumbledore exclaimed.
"It won't be a problem, I am exhausted from my journey here. Do you have anything for injuries?" Kakashi asked.
"We have a school nurse who can heal with magic. Do you have an injury?" Dumbledore asked, concerned for his newest student.
"Yes, my shoulder has recently been stabbed and my ribs are bruised. I must also ask that you keep my identity as both an otherworlder and a shinobi a secret."
"Your secret is safe with me and your injuries will be no problem. I must ask, though, how did your shoulder get stabbed?" Dumbledore asked.
"I was on a mission and a missing-nin stabbed me. It happened little more than a week ago, but I have been moving the entire time for another mission, so it might have gotten infected." Kakashi said. Dumbledore winced at the thought of constantly moving for a week with a hole in his shoulder.
"I'll talk to you more once school starts, for now I'll take you to the nurse and you can get some rest before leaving tomorrow." Dumbledore said, smiling. Kakashi gave him an eye smile back and Dumbledore was absolutely delighted that someone else could do his infamous eye twinkle.
Dumbledore stood up and motioned for Kakashi to follow as he went down the spiral staircase and into the rest of the castle. If Kakashi was surprised or impressed, he didn't show it and instead had a sort of bored look in his eye.
"Not impressed?" Dumbledore asked, slightly curious since this is the first time someone had not dropped their jaw at the sight of Hogwarts.
"Not in the slightest. This is the first castle I've ever seen and I must say, it doesn't live up to my expectations." Kakashi said. Dumbledore looked back at him and saw a small twinkle in his eye. He laughed and the boy's eye smiled back.
"Well, hopefully our classes are a bit more exciting. I'll give you the booklist for your previous years as well as this one so you can catch up to the third years. It shouldn't be too hard and I'll let you come back here once or twice a week in order to practice the magic and get some input from our teachers."
"Thank you." Kakashi responded. They had reached the hospital wing and Dumbledore knocked on the door. The door opened magically and they stepped in to see Poppy coming out of her office.
"Poppy! We have a transfer student from Japan this year and he has some injuries that I need you to tend to." Dumbledore said happily. Poppy frowned a little as she took in Kakashi's hair and mask.
"Do any of the other teachers know about this young man being here?" Poppy asked while ushering Kakashi over to a bed. Kakashi sat down and started taking off his long white coat. He was wearing a tight sleeveless black shirt white a metal vest. He had black gloves that reached above his elbows and black baggy pants that connected to his ankles with bandages. He also wore several pouches in various places along his body.
"No, none of the other teachers know yet. I'll tell them tomorrow at breakfast before he leaves for Diagon Alley." Dumbledore said. Kakashi had taken off his gloves and vest as well as his shirt. His chest was muscled and lean. Poppy gasped as she took in all the scars and injuries that he had along his arms and chest.
"My poor dear, what happened?" Poppy asked as her eyes fell upon the now unbandaged shoulder and the bruised rib cage. Kakashi's eyes flickered to Dumbledore for an excuse.
"His school prioritizes fighting, so he has had many injuries from various fights and exploits." Dumbledore said, also surprised at the vast amounts of injuries that Kakashi had obtained.
"B-but, this is just so…" Poppy tried, but couldn't seem to piece together the correct wording.
"I am fine, miss. Is there anything you can do for my shoulder or ribs? Some of them have cracked because of an impact and my shoulder has been stabbed completely through to the other side." Kakashi said, making Poppy's worries skyrocket.
"Stabbed?" Poppy asked in a weak voice. Kakashi just nods and Poppy shakes her head. Poppy gets out her wand and points it at his shoulder, muttering a spell. The wound closes up and looks months old already. She moves onto the ribs, but stops when she points her wand at them.
"Almost all of them are cracked!" Poppy exclaims. "How long have they been like this?"
"A little longer than a week." Kakashi said. Dumbledore stares at all of this wondering for the second time that evening how this boy had traveled for a week with nearly all of his ribs cracked and a hole in his shoulder.
Poppy gapes at Kakashi before turning on Dumbledore. "You should have gotten him to me earlier! I can't believe this boy has been walking around perfectly, he should have passed out from the pain by now." Poppy said.
Kakashi looks down as if ashamed and Dumbledore almost chuckles at his expression before remembering that Poppy is probably about to kill him. "Well, I really must be going now, so please do as much as you can for him. See you at breakfast, Mr. Hatake." Dumbledore said as he rushed out of the hospital wing.
