G-Men and Rebel League alike froze at Giovanni's words, all sound and motion evaporating out of the room.
"While this has been quite the show," Giovanni descended from his hidden door, "I fear your time is up."
Riley crossed his arms. "Three more divisions of the G-Men are storming your base as we speak. You're surrounded and out of options."
"Am I, now?" Giovanni tossed the white pokeball up, the capsule cracking open with a ghostly wail.
MissingNO materialized in the form of a Kabutops skeleton made from data instead of bone, the Pokemon's outline glitching and fuzzy. It turned its empty eye sockets towards the patonai, scythes raised.
"Behold!" Charon cackled.
Though Aurian's hands trembled, her glare remained deadly. "Oh, Arceus…"
A cruel smile cracked through Giovanni's stony visage. "Behold the fruit of your failed mission, G-Men. This is your end."
"So this is MissingNO, then?" Ash stepped forward to shield his sister.
The pixels rearranged into the silhouette of a man. "yE s, I aM. aN d yO u ar E?"
"I'm Ash, this is my sister, Aurian," Ash motioned behind his back for the Armada to spread out in a circle. "How's your day been so far?"
MissingNO tilted sideways. "aN o DD quEstIOn, cons I dEr INg yOUr imP endI ng dOOm."
"Last time we met our doom," Aurian muttered, "we beat the crap out of it."
"GioV annI saYs YoU aR e tO be anNih i la ted."
"Does he, now?" Aurian bit her lip, tasting blood. "What else has he told you?"
"ThA t thE wORL d oUtSIDe of ROckeT is a cr u el, uNforGiviNG p lacE. Ro CKe T is OrdE R anD pe ACE. RocKe t mUSt pr evaIL."
"I won't deny that the world is cruel. There's a lot of truth to that," Ash said.

Ash cleared his throat. "That's not the only lie he's fed you. Has Giovanni mentioned that he's been lying about his identity this entire time?"
"I haV e nOT heARD ThIS ta le," MissingNO's edges flared red. "enLighT en me, M a s TER."
"I beg your pardon?" Giovanni's eyes went wide. "I am only who I am-"
"Nice try, John Cabot," Aurian shook her head.
Giovanni backed into a wall. "How the hell- there's no way you could know that unless, unless-"
Ash's eyes flared blue. "Surprise, we're not who you think we are."
"Giovanni, what are they implying?" Charon asked, panic infiltrating his voice.
"Can you recall any Guardians in your time who had a little boy and an infant girl when they passed? I'm sure it will come to you," Aurian sighed.
Giovanni's jaw dropped, eyes filling with rage. "There's no way in hell-"
"The math works out, doesn't it? Thirty-five years and the two people you've waited a lifetime to find stormed right through your doors." Ash's blue flames burned a wide circle around the G-Men.
"What other heritage would we dare to claim?" Aurian asked.
Giovanni rubbed his temples. "Aaron continues to haunt me from beyond the grave, damn his bloodline. Fine. If you insist on running to your own demise, follow. But first-"
Charon released his team, monstrous Shadow pokemon appearing on either side of the man.
"I believe there's a temple on Lily of the Valley Island I need to find. Breaking the blood meridian wasn't enough to stop you, unfortunately, but it's not the end of the world," Giovanni laughed. "Perhaps it will be the end of yours."
MissingNO enveloped the man and vanished.
Ash cried out as he missed grabbing Giovanni's wrist by three inches.
Aurian pulled him back, an aura shield deflecting bullets from Giovanni's henchmen. "Don't you dare go somewhere I can't follow! What do we do?"
"You can't stay here," Misty put a hand on both their shoulders. "Let me handle Charon."
Riley's eyes nearly bugged out of his head. "Are you sure?"
"I got this," Misty's Gyarados let out a deafening roar.
"Ready with backup, use us as you need," Hiori and his Tangrowth both saluted.
Charon cocked his head. "That's an awful lot of confidence from an underpowered Gym Leader."
Misty didn't have to command Gyarados to act, the dual-type annihilating Charon's Golem with a nasty Hydro Pump.
"Say that again, but slower," Misty growled. "Let's go!"
Her team jumped into the fray, Charon yelling commands to no avail.
Misty seized Ash's hand. "If I don't get the chance to say it again, I love you."
Ash squeezed back, the din quieting as he focused on the light in Misty's eyes. "I love you too. Stay safe."
"There's an anti-teleportation field deployed, we're trapped!" Sam yelled.
"Hang on," Aurian took a boost from Hiori, catapulting over the brawl and landing directly behind Charon. "You have something we need."
Ten seconds later, the younger patonai had the scientist on the ground, a small remote in her hands.
"You'll live to regret this," he hissed.
She shrugged. "Funny, Saturn said the same thing. Look where I am now. I doubt it, but thanks!"
Aurian tossed the remote to Riley, who shattered it under his foot. A pink sphere around all three towers flickered twice, then shattered.
"Armada, forward!" Riley yelled, the G-Men echoing his war cry.
Ash recalled his team, leaving Gallade at his side. "Commander, we're going after him. Requesting permission to take command of the situation in Sinnoh."
"Permission granted," Riley saluted. "We'll tie up loose ends here. I'll be there ASAP, hold him off as long as you can. Don't you dare use Alea Ultima or I'm firing you every day for the rest of your lives."
Aurian's Pokemon returned. "No promises!"
The patonai vanished in a swirl of magenta.
"Damn kids," Riley muttered, all hell breaking loose as the G-Men surged forward to finish the job. "Maybe they'll use common sense this time…"
Ash and Aurian slammed into Sinnoh soil, taking off running as soon as they regained their balance.
"We need to evacuate the Island," Aurian fished her PokeGear out of her pocket. "Do we have the rank to do that?"
Ash nodded, pulling the gloves they found in the Sanctum on. "We're the acting commanders right now. Call the Jennies."
Aurian skidded to a halt, entering the emergency number.
"LVIPD, this is Officer Jenny…" she trailed off, staring at the beaten-up kids on her screen. "What happened?"
"Captains Borealis and Borealis of the G-Men Armada here, issuing an executive order to evacuate all competitors, spectators, and staff from the Island," Ash started. "There's a weapon of mass destruction present that could obliterate the Island if we don't move fast enough."
Aurian flashed her badge. "We'll neutralize the weapon. If we fail, send for backup. Are we clear?"
"Yes sir, understood," Jenny said. "Best of luck, you two."
"Where to? MissingNO's an artificial Pokemon, we can't track it," Ash groaned.
Aurian closed her eyes, recoiling once she felt a hole in the aura field.
"Stadium A," she said. "The temple's way down underneath it… not to mention that we can sense the void where something living should be. Come on!"
The patonai paused outside the stadium.
"Are you ready?" Aurian asked.
Ash shook his head. "Not at all, let's go!"
He tossed Charizard's pokeball, the dragon appearing with a huff.
"Charizard, we need to break into the stadium but all the doors are locked. Would you do the honors?"
The fire-type blasted a hole ten feet wide through the stadium wall, flames meeting no resistance. Ash sent a wave of aura down their makeshift hallway to cool the melting concrete and steel before he led his sister forward.
Blue skies turned to menacing green as clouds rolled in, what little sunlight remained burning grey and without warmth. Flames from Charizard's grand entrance licked the grass pitch, leaving a burn line that crunched under the patonai's feet.
"Show your face, you coward!" Aurian cried, Giovanni and MissingNO, disguised as the Kabutops skeleton, coming into view.
Giovanni grimaced. "Charon failed. Unexpected, but not unredeemable. No matter. MissingNO, kill the spares. Finish what I started!"
MissingNO glowed red. Both patonai fell to their knees a second later, the artificial Pokemon's mental knife overwhelming their defenses.
"juSt as I exPe c teD, psYc h ic aTTacks haRM You grEa tLY. Ho w doEs thIs feEL, t iny ONES?"
Ash broke MissingNO's grip just long enough to fire a vicious aura sphere, watching with savage joy as the energy dimmed MissingNO's harsh light.
He crawled to his sister. "Ri, breathe for me, we're getting you out of this-"
Light flickered in and out of Aurian's eyes, the younger patonai fighting with all she had. Tear tracks ran down her grimy face.
"tiNieST OnE, wha t gOOd aRE YOU? yOur br othEr is fAr mORe CapABle a ND liVes UP t o yOuR FATher's nAme. wHAt aRe yo u th ink ing, tRYinG to ke ep up wItH Him?"

Through blurred vision, Ash barely made out two attacks from his sister. The first knocked Giovanni off his feet, the second smacked MissingNO in the face.
She stood, legs shaking. "No one talks about my patonai like that and gets away with it."
Aurian's return fire gave Ash enough time to pull himself to his feet. "You jumped a thousand years through time to kill two kids and call me a coward?!"
"All was necessary. If only I hadn't landed twenty years behind Delia and Atticus."
"Don't you dare speak her name!" Ash yelled, his fury shoving MissingNO's mental knife from his brain. "Mom's not a Guardian, you have no right to pull her into this. If you're determined to destroy my family, you'll have to get through me to do it."
Aurian tugged on her arrowheads and motioned for Ash to do the same.
"Your father made the same mistake. He was so concerned for the welfare of his family that he made a permanent sacrifice for a temporary solution," Giovanni crossed his arms.
"We won't make the mistake of letting you leave here a free man," Aurian snarled. "We'll end this, no matter what happens to us."
Ash nodded. "That's where we differ. You've sacrificed others for yourself and your god-forsaken mission; we'll sacrifice ourselves for the greater good, no matter what the stakes. Two sides of the same coin."
"You know what I am capable of," MissingNO laughed, "do you truly believe you stand a chance?"
A deafening crack resounded through the stadium, pink lightning splitting the arena in two. Evacuation sirens howled as the smoke cleared, revealing a long-lost Pokemon, tail twitching in anger.
"Not against us," Mewtwo growled, chunks of ground rising at his command. "Ash, Aurian, we have a mutual enemy. Let us band together."
"The more, the merrier!" Ash's hands ignited.
Aurian gave MissingNO a wide berth, biding her time until she could get close enough to place aura mines. Mewtwo feinted back, drawing the artificial Pokemon out of its safe zone. Aurian rolled to dodge a Hyper Beam, her aura seeping into the ground as she spun.
Ash kept MissingNO distracted, vision split between aura field and true sight. He pushed forward into Aurian's minefield, praying for a miracle.
Blue lightning erupted up once MissingNO stepped back, the glitch roaring in pain as aura shocked its systems. Mewtwo took advantage of the distraction and caught MissingNO in a massive psychic net. Giovanni's masterpiece shifted rapidly through a catalog of monstrous forms in an attempt to break free.
"Did you think you could replace me, Giovanni?" Mewtwo skidded to a halt in front of his creator.
Giovanni laughed, the sound sending chills down the patonais' spines. "The intention was never to replace you, it was to upgrade you. MissingNO is your superior in every possible way-"
MissingNO shattered the net with a nasty Dark Pulse, which sent Mewtwo flying backwards. He pushed off the back stadium wall, summoning debris to his side.
"If that thing is my superior, why am I still breathing?" Mewtwo gave a savage grin and flung the debris towards the patonai. Ash and Aurian redirected the attack towards MissingNO, who summoned a last-minute Protect-
"When Lance asked us to keep an eye on the Sinnoh situation, I didn't think it'd turn out quite like this," Cynthia said, bursting into the pressbox of Stadium A with Diantha on her heels.
"What, you never thought we'd have to drag Tameranze kicking and screaming out of his Regional office?" Diantha asked. "That's not your definition of a fun Friday night?"
Tameranze leaned over a control board, eyes glued to the display of destruction beneath his feet. "You're not making me leave."
"Sir, this syndicate is targeting everyone involved with the League. Since Goodshow is down, you're next in line for League leadership. We can't leave you at risk," Cynthia grabbed his wrist and pulled.
"This," Tameranze motioned forward, "is the most spectacular battle I've ever seen. I must see it through to its conclusion."
Diantha groaned. "Those covert agents would probably appreciate some privacy. Also, knowledge of Mewtwo's existence is restricted to Champions, Elite Four, and league senior leadership only. If we stay, we attract commotion."
Tameranze shook his head.
Cynthia pressed her fifth speed-dial button, the call ringing four times before it connected.
"A little busy here!" Lance cried, a raging battle echoing in the background.
"Lance, Tameranze insists on watching your agents fight that artificial monstrosity."
The man in question raised a finger. "I'd also like to record it!"
"No way in hell!" he answered, a stream of curses flooding her PokeGear. Cynthia put Lance on speaker, where he chewed Tameranze out for a good three minutes before pausing for breath.
"Champion Luxforde, I understand where you're coming from, but this is the most electrifying battle I've ever seen! This is textbook survival of the fittest mixed with creativity and outside-the-box thinking. Also, if you really think about it, those covert agents of yours could really use footage of this in court…"
Cynthia's eyes lit up. "Lance, if we show this to the right people, we can book Giovanni on attempted murder charges."
"I appreciate the idea, but we'd put our agents in inordinate danger! I'm not risking Shadow and Braveheart. We already expect so much of them, I can't stack this on top of everything they're already facing."
Diantha and Cynthia exchanged a pointed glance.
"Say that footage wasn't aired live but sent to newscasters across the world after some form of press conference…" Diantha began.
Cynthia could feel Lance's eyebrows raise across three continents. "After G-Men censoring?"
Cynthia cleared her throat. "Technically illegal, but Steven could do it flawlessly-"
"Start recording," Lance said. "We'll use prior restraint to protect our agents. Send me the footage, whatever happens. Keep Tameranze safe, he's our pin once we reconstruct the League. Use your teams for backup. Sure looks like we have some corrupted members to purge…"
"We're on it. Don't die on us, Lance," Diantha said.
A quiet chuckle came over the line before the call ended.
Cynthia looked up to find Tameranze manning a huge camera system. "Shall we?"
"I really hope we catch a happy ending instead of a sad one," Diantha muttered, taking over the control board.
Fifteen minutes later, the brawl in Stadium A still rested in a stalemate. The patonai and Mewtwo were evenly matched against MissingNO, both parties trying everything in their power to eliminate the other.
Ash launched his sister into the air, Aurian rapid-firing aura spheres as she catapulted down to earth. MissingNO took the brunt of the attack, the younger patonai rolling on landing.
"Whatever we're doing," she panted, "isn't working. We… need a new plan."
Ash watched MissingNO pepper Mewtwo with Shadow Balls, the other Pokemon barely managing to dodge. "Maybe we don't need to target MissingNO-"
Aurian grinned. "I'm on it."
"Buy me two minutes, I'll help how I can!" Ash said, black eye crinkling.
Aurian nodded, then edged her way around the edge of the pitch. Giovanni stood transfixed by the destructive beauty of his creation, calling orders whenever Mewtwo's attacks hit.
She snuck forward until she was directly behind him. Aurian slammed her hands into the ground, a stream of aura rocketing from her palms and pooling under Giovanni's feet.
The ground caved in as he stepped forward, the man falling waist-deep into the gap in the field. Debris shifted, pinning his legs underground.
"You dirty, cheating little-" Giovanni hissed, tugging at the rocks with no avail.
Aurian beamed. "That was for our father, you insufferable Magikarp."
"How eloquent," Giovanni sighed. "MissingNO, get me out!"
Mewtwo blasted the glitch with a double Psywave. "I think not!"
Across the pitch, Ash knelt to the ground, the crystals in the back of his gloves flickering as he grabbed a stick.
"I really hope this works," he muttered, carving a passable circle into the ground.
The Borealis family crest, shaky but recognizable, appeared a minute later, lines warped by Ash's tired hands. He took a deep breath in and laid his hands on the outline, tuning out the din of the chaos in front of him.
A sonic boom ripped through the stadium, evacuation sirens pausing for a split second before restarting with greater fervor. Ash's jaw dropped as a solid white ring of aura rippled out from the crest gouged in the dirt, spreading out to the edges of the Island.
Ash looked down to see blood- his own- smeared over the Guild crest hidden in the drawing.
He put a hand to his head, palm coming away red.
The edges of the ripple rocketed upwards, covering the area in a hemisphere. Once the aura gathered at the top, an indescribable peace washed over Ash, a burden on his heart and soul lifted.
"Oh my God," Ash gasped.
"No!" Giovanni cried. "How did you salvage the blood meridian?!"
Ash sprinted across the field, landing a massive aura-fueled kick to MissingNO's side. "Ri!"
Aurian prepped to knock Giovanni out but paused when the ground rattled. Her ankle popped as her balance shifted, the younger patonai settling for an aura sphere to Giovanni's side instead.
He howled as the attack made contact, scorching his shoulder and roasting his face. A shard from one of Mewtwo's attacks caught Giovanni in the eye, blood scattering across the already mauled ground.
"MissingNO, open the floodgates!" Giovanni cried. "Keep going!"
Ash knocked him out before MissingNO could process what Giovanni ordered. "Floodgates?"
MissingNO, caught between forms, solidified into a pixelated L. White light erupted from the top of its form, dividing itself into multiple beams. The ground vaporized wherever the light made contact, the sickening scent of burnt earth rising across the Island.
"Crap, we gotta end this now!" Ash said. "The island'll be gone before-"
Aurian sent three more rapid-fire aura spheres towards MissingNO's form, each one dulling more pixels.
"I don't think it'll stop unless we take it out in one blow," she shook her head.
A spark of recognition appeared in Ash's eyes. "Ri-"
"You're not attempting the Alea," Aurian blocked an attack with an aura shield. "There has to be another way."
Mewtwo whizzed over their heads. "It's slowing down, now's your chance!"
A Hyper Beam rocketed over their heads, the attack three times its normal size. Half a section of the stadium vaporized as the beam swept through it.
"Switching speed for strength," Ash pulled on an arrowhead. "I'm running out of reserves, are you okay?"
She shook her head. "I think I broke my ankle back when the ground shifted. I've had to pull more than normal to ignore the pain, this is all I have left."
Her third arrowhead hovered, halfway full. The light from her reserves illuminated their battle-worn faces, littered in cuts and blood.
"If we play things right, this is all we'll need. Mewtwo, you okay?"
"I can go for as long as you need me to. I'm more worried about you two, you are both injured."
Ash fished for the blood in his hair, blasting the wound shut with a flare of aura. "I have an idea. Let's split up. I'll take right, you take left, Mewtwo takes top. Maybe we'll generate the energy needed to get this thing to combust if we all attack at once."
"Okay, I trust you," Aurian squeezed his hand. "Mewtwo, can you cover me?"
Mewtwo nodded. "Signal us, Ash."
Ash watched his sister and his first enemy sprint headlong across the field, MissingNO firing Hyper Beam after Hyper Beam in their direction. Mewtwo took a hit but pulled himself up, retaliating with extra fury to compensate.
He positioned himself on top of the crest, the same sense of peace rushing over him.
"Ri's distracted enough," he thought. "As long as MissingNO and Mewtwo keep her busy, I can risk Alea to keep her safe. Better me than her, I can't let her die here-"
Mewtwo took a Hyper Beam to the back and impacted, hard, into the concrete barrier at the base of the field. His last Shadow Ball made contact, smoke filling the area.
As Ash drew aura into his heart, the crest under his feet ignited. Figures burst out of the symbol, linking arms to form a human shield.
"What the…" Ash tilted his head.
"We'll keep you safe, fight like your life depends on it!" Azaiah grinned a veteran's grin, taking off across the field.
Twenty-five generations of Borealis Guardians poured through Ash's accidental Chronicle, whispering words of encouragement before encompassing the field. MissingNO's attacks did no damage, bouncing off the spirits.
Ash's jaw dropped when the smoke cleared, revealing his sister, arms outstretched and aura concentrating in her chest.
"Please no," his voice cracked. "You don't need to-"
Aurian's frame trembled as Alea Ultima took hold. "Didn't I tell you not to go where I can't follow? We promised double or nothing from day one, Ash!"
"Aurian," he choked back a sob.
MissingNO paused its rampage. "I dON'T undEr stAnd. whY wouLD YoU gIV e yOuR Life so. frEeLy?"
"You were created for selfish reasons," fatigue crept into Aurian's voice, "so all you know… is hate. Our family, both blood and chosen, deserves to live a life free… free from the threat of your terror."
Ash pushed harder, struggling to stay upright. "If two lives in exchange for peace is what it takes, then we go gladly, especially if it means taking you with us!"
"Long live the G-Men!" Aurian cried, digging her feet into the ground.
The spirits on her half of the field copied the motion, ghostly aura blocking MissingNO's vision.
Ash's aura pulsed red, the elder patonai wrestling with all he had to keep it in line. His heart skipped a few beats as his conviction wavered. The faces of everyone he loved appeared within his mind's eye.
His sister, bloody and battered but still willing to fight to the bitter end, the same way she fought for him all those years ago.
His mother, always forgiving, welcoming he and Aurian home time and time again with open arms and no questions asked.
Riley, stern but cautiously optimistic in his training, the perfect combination of a friend, a mentor, and a commanding officer wrapped into one.
Lance and his wicked schemes, his unrelenting faith and confidence in two teenagers appalling at worst and life-giving at best.
The Armada, who didn't have to accept two traumatized kids, adding the patonai into their shenanigans like they'd been family all along.
Misty- he choked up- Misty Waterflower, who held his heart and his soul, personifying the persistence of patient love.
"Can't let her down, can I?" he muttered, aura shifting from red to white.
"CaNNo t coMPUte thIS REasOnInG," MissingNO froze and folded in on itself. "WhAT IS thIs grEAt LOVE-"
Ash and Aurian extended their right arms in unison, pure white aura bursting from their palms. MissingNO screeched as twin Alea Ultima infected its systems, aura streaming through like blood through veins. MissingNO's screams grew louder as aura reached its core, pixels fracturing and dissolving.
In a split second, Ash made eye contact with his father's spirit, the man saying the one word Ash'd always longed to hear from him before vanishing with the rest of the ghosts.
"Proud."
The resulting explosion blinded the patonai, sending them flying across the length of the stadium. A second sonic boom tore through the Island, Ash and Aurian slamming into opposite walls. Their patonai marks glowed a bright blue-white above Stadium A.
Concrete rumbled and steel supports buckled, the sounds of destruction echoing through the shattered remains of the arena. Ash released Charizard, who yelped in terror at his trainer's appearance.
"Charizard, get me to Ri, I don't know if she made it-"
The dragon deposited Ash next to his patonai, who lay splayed out on the ground.
Aurian gasped for air, the last sparks of aura vanishing from her third arrowhead.
"Hang in there, Ri," Ash took her hand with what little strength he could muster. "See? I didn't go where you couldn't follow, but it looks like you made that choice yourself."
She laughed, then coughed up blood. "We'll be okay, right?"
"If we gotta go," Ash grinned, "at least we're together."
Aurian mustered a smile. "Double or nothing, brother."
"Double or nothing. I love you… Ri…"
Their teams released as they passed out, hands still intertwined.
Raziel and Cass both burst into tears the second they materialized, summoning all the aura they could.
"Damn it damn it damn it why didn't they let us help?" Cass cried, funneling as much as she could into her trainer. "We could have saved them from this fate-"
"No time to think about what could have been, they need us!" Raziel said.
A tiny pop sounded in the distance. Pikachu made it to the ruins of the stadium first, tears streaming down his face as he took in the wreckage.
"Pikapi! Chapi!" he screamed, skidding to a halt by his faithful trainer.
Riley, hood down and arm in a sling, shook his head. "God, no, please don't let me be too late!"
He released his Lucario. "Gabriel, we need all the help we can get. Split between both of them until I get off the phone, then take Ash."
"Roger," the third Lucario summoned aura spheres in both hands.
Riley fumbled for his PokeGear, a thoroughly alarmed emergency line operator answering.
"This is G-Men Commander Riley Hawthorne. I need immediate assistance at Stadium A on Lily of the Valley Island, two of my captains will die if we don't do something quick! Stage Five medevac needed, I repeat, Stage Five-"
His voice broke on the last word, the commander swapping his PokeGear for aura.
"Come on, patonai, you have to make it. Please."
