The Tale of Twin Hearts

(Chapter 2) Quest for Approval, Search for Acceptance

Page 1:

Did you know that the way most Froslass move around is based on a dance? I didn't know either until my mother showed me. The first time I saw it, I thought it was amazing, so I asked her to teach me. She did her best, of course, but I couldn't exactly levitate around like she could. Regardless, she never gave up on me and I learned the dance the best way I could with two feet; One of my bigger accomplishments really.

...I can't wait to evolve so I can look and be like my mother...

Something else she told me was that the way some Ghost Pokemon move is based on some form of dance while others just move how they like, you know, whatever works for them.

Now I know you must be saying "Why is this puffball lecturing me about Ghost Pokemon and Dancing?" Simple. Chatot.

The moment Chatot readied himself, I knew I was in for something since I've seen that stance once before. The only issue was he was so quick, we could barely see how fast he was moving before he hit us with a Wing Attack, and this is without mentioning the amount of grace and style he put into it as he ended it with a pose. He may have only struck us once, but that's all it took for me to understand the amount of force he put into it since it knocked everyone else down. the best way to describe it is like getting lashed by Venusaur's Vine Whip and I have had that happen to me once, only to know I would not want that to happen to me again; good thing I blocked it.

"Overflow, such a maaarvelous and powerful ability..." He said, his voice reverbed in a shimmering echo, almost singing. "...and yet-"

Feeling it was the best opportunity, I leaped at him with Endeavor, using the damage he did to me as a counter to trying to catch him off guard. Big mistake. With unbelievable precision, he grabbed my paw with his wing, spun me, and nailed me in the chest with a Shadow Punch. The force from the punch completely winded me as it launched me back, causing me to tumble into the sand.

"-anyone can use it."

Scrambling out of the sand, Pumpkin shook himself off and went on the defense.

"I thought you were going to show us how to use it, not put us out of commission!"

Chatot chuckled as he jumped backward, creating distance between us yet again, and perched himself on top of a palm tree leaf...somehow...

"Just because any pokemon can use it doesn't mean it's easy to access this form. One has to have a clear, steady mind before it ever starts to show itself."

"Do you know how hard it is to do that? My mind is racing even before a fight begins." Miya responded, checking herself for injuries as she also gets up out of the sand.

"And that is precisely why this ability is so hard to acquire. Although there's nothing wrong with thinking up a strategy or a plan, you must put aside your doubts, your thoughts of dismay, your fears, and focus; Focus on your goal, your purpose for fighting. And if it helps any, think about the ones you are fighting for."

At that, Miya looked over to me, then at Pumpkin. As she looked at him, he was still staring warily at Chatot, trying to prepare himself for the next attack. Her gaze toward him was deep; A look of longing. Before I could question it in my mind, her gaze towards him was cut short as Chatot took another stance, one I was once again familiar with as he locked onto Pumpkin; I needed to stop him. As I readied myself, Chatot launched him off the palm tree leaf with sound-breaking speeds, the air around him crackled as he gracefully dived towards Pumpkin with Steel Wing. He was too fast.

"But most importantly, above all, never-h-huh?"

Before he could collide into Pumpkin, Chatot was immediately halted by a strong force, creating a loud "ping!". In front of Pumpkin was Miya with her arms up in an "X" position above her head, creating some sort of small barrier in front of her, pushing back at Chatot's Steel-covered Wing.

"...Never...give up, right?" Miya said as sparks flew from the struggle between Miya and Chatot's attacks.

Amazed, Chatot stared at Miya as her body gave off a very faint pulsating glow. Coming to his senses he chuckles and kicked Miya into Pumpkin, dissipating her barrier and the faint glow.

"Phenomenal...I haven't even finished explaining it and yet, you almost activated the ability. You kids are something else."

"For the last time, we aren't kids..." I said dismissively. Turning his eyes towards me, Chatot gave me a bitter look, one of utter disappointment and disgust. It had me concerned.

"You. Liloxi, was it? I expected more out of you."

"What? Me? Why me?"

"Several reasons..." In a blink of an eye, Chatot spun and raised his wing to strike me. Out of pure reflex, I deflected it with Pound, only for him to reverse it with Faint Attack.

"For one, why didn't you save your friends?"

"W-What? What are you-"

"I saw that looks you gave me when I prepared my first and second attacks. You knew what I was about to do, which leads to my second question. Why are you hiding what you can do?"

"Wha-the heck are you talking about! I'm not hiding anything!" I scoffed, trying to hide my concern. Chatot narrowed his eyes as the other looked on in the distance, still in the sand.

"You're putting on this 'facade', keeping everyone from knowing what you can really do. Why is that?"

"Again, I don't know what you're talking about."

"Oh really? Then I don't suppose you have the power to save him?"

Chatot pointed to the other end of the beach. Sitting by the waves was a Queen as he looked out toward the ocean with the waves rushing against his feet and skirt, completely unaware we were nearby. "What's was he here?" I told myself. He said we would go to the Beach the next day.
Seeing the look on my face, Chatot mumbled "thought so" before suddenly launching himself at Queen. Gasping, I barred my teeth and sunk into the shadows after him. Right before Chatot could come in contact with Queen, I appeared in front of him and blocked Chatot's Shadow Punch with Shadow Claw.

"L-Liloxi? Chatot? What are you two doing here?" Queen said, caught off guard.

As much as I wanted to respond, I kept my eyes fixed on Chatot. Suddenly, the clouds above started to brew as hail began raining down above us. A Snow Warning.

Ignoring the Hail, Chatot grinned at me as I continued keeping my eyes on him, showing my teeth, which again was not like me, but I couldn't stop. It felt like I had no control. His grin suddenly turned into a strange stare as he narrowed his eyes once again at me.

"Liloxi?" He called, but I didn't answer. I...couldn't.

"Hmm…" Rubbing his chin, he nods a few times and abruptly clapped his wings twice, causing his form to burst in a showy display of light, reverting him back to his original self. It was oddly enough to snap me back to reality.

"Alright, I think that enough for one day! Let's head back to the others, ok?"

"...Alright?" I said, slightly confused as my senses quickly returned to me.

"Queen, come along too."

"Uh, S-Suurrrre." He said, also confused as he picked himself up out of the wet sand.

Making our way back, Miya and Pumpkins were waiting for us with hints of confusion on their faces, but a mix of uncertainty on Pumpkin's.

"Chatot, what happened just now?" Pumpkin asked, his face twisted in unsureness.

"Which part? Quite a bit happened tonight, though I must say I'm quite impressed since our little spar told me a lot about each and every one of you."

"How? I don't see what all of this was for."

"Hehe, I guess I should explain a bit further. As I've said, Overflow is an ability that is able to be possessed by ALL pokemon, with the exception of it being hard to unleash. Once a pokemon does, they are able to tap into their Hidden Power and allow that to become part of their own being. I take it each of you know what Hidden Power is, yes?

"uhhhmm, It's sort of like a type that lays dormant in us, right?" Miya said, putting her hand over her chest, "I remember My father used to tell me this."

"Exactly! And I have to say, you almost unleashed your Overflow ability, Miya. Only time will tell what type it may consist of."

"Huh...So that's what that was. All I wanted to do is protect Pumpkin from getting hurt."

"Wait, me?" Pumpkin said, giving Miya a curious look. Miya laughed nervously, completely flustered.

"W-Well-uh, yeah...we're a team, right?

"Correct," Chatot said before Pumpkin could get a word in. Miya sighed in relief. "And that's all it took for you to focus your mind. However, I have to say, it's not that easy for everyone, though I did expect you to show some sign of it."

"What? Really?" Miya said, stunned upon him knowing it would happen, "But...how?"

Chatot chuckled. "I will tell you when the time is right."

Miya scratched her head. Although she wanted to ask more, I could tell she knew it wouldn't have made a difference.

"Pumpkin. I see the look on your face. Don't be disappointed or discouraged. Your time will come soon enough and that feeble attitude of yours will go away. Just believe in yourself, ok? There's nothing wrong with others standing up for you. You're a team after all.

"...Gotcha. I'll keep that in mind," He said, looking down.

"Now, as for you…" Chatot turned and looked directly at me. Although his voice was content, his face and his expression told a different story. With his chest out and head up as he looked down at me in disappointment, I could tell he was going to chew me out.

"Again, why were you hiding such power? You know you can't deny it now. It has been displayed for everyone to see, so speak up.

"...I was told by my mother to not use those moves outside of my homeland. Sure, I make some exceptions in dire moments, but I would never use that kind of power for any other reason and I would never question what my mother tells me."

"Then what changed your mind? I find it strange you would use it to protect this young lad, but not your own team-"

"...There's no reason."

"Is it because you two are childhood friends?"

"There's no reason!"

Or is there something deeper-"

"There's no other REASON!"

Quickly, everyone took a step back, except Chatot. Realizing what just happened, I covered my mouth, confused. That voice, it wasn't my voice. It was deeper and harsher than anything I was capable of; enough to scare me.

"Still there, I see…" Chatot murmured, completely unphased. I had no idea what he meant by that, but I was too shocked to question it.

"...Miya, Pumpkin, Liloxi...in fact all four of you, listen up. Tomorrow, I have another mission for you. Now don't be alarmed, it's not as difficult as the last one, in fact, I believe all of you can handle it. I'll give more details in the morning but for now, let's head back to the Guild; Hopefully, we didn't miss out on Dinner. regardless, I'll have Chimecho send everyone's food to the room so you all can eat and rest. Queen, You can come along as well. I'll have an extra bed waiting for you."

"A-Alright...but I had a place made ready for me."

"I'm sure of it, but I need you on this mission because it involves you as well."

"How!?"

"You'll find out tomorrow. Unless you prefer backing out. I won't judge."

"No, no, I'm curious. You can count me in."

"Perfect. Let's head back everyone!"
