Seventy-five people hospitalized, forty-five dead over alleged Argus NerveGear breakdowns

By Reuters Staff

TOKYO (Reuters) – At least seventy-five people have been sent to hospitals after having their Argus NerveGear virtual reality headsets forcibly removed, with at least forty-five people declared dead on arrival.

Reports of people being brought into hospitals in the Tokyo area after having their headsets removed have spread on Twitter, with photographs showing people with severe burns on their heads.

The incidents come as Japan sees the official launch of "Sword Art Online", a multi-player online role-playing game (MMORPG) published by Argus that serves as a demonstration of immersive sensory virtual reality, which emulates real world senses. The game is currently set for an international Christmas release in Europe, China, and North America pending the building of server infrastructure.

Argus representatives have yet to comment.
