Hey readers, this is my first ever writing a fanfic. I've wanted to do this for a long time but I just never got around to it. Also because I was a little embarrassed and nervous. For a long time now I've been trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. I love anime and I love reading so naturally, I was drawn to FanFiction. Reading all the great stories on this site actually helped me find out that I wanted to try and write my own young adult fiction light novel. However, I've never taken a creative writing class so this fic is kinda like a test run so if you have any advice I'd greatly appreciate it. Which is why I chose RWBY as the universe I wanted to start with. It's a setting that is pretty easy to write for which is good for a rookie like me.
Quick little info about my story. It's an OC centered story that starts a year before the canon start of RWBY. The story will have multiple OC's including antagonists and places. Non-Team RWBY, canon characters will be present but RWBY will appear from time to time and will interact with my OC's, but only rarely. Team RWBY's story will happen in the background and have some connections with mine but I'll try to keep the two as separate as I can.
I understand that when it comes to OC characters and fics there are certain guidelines as well as do's and don'ts to follow. For the most part, I adhere to these rules put there are some that I don't agree with. For example, from what I've seen most people don't like when an OC or their semblance is too strong/op. I believe that as long as one can make having a strong OC, convincing, or entertaining then I see no problem with it. Now that might make me sound arrogant, but I think how I planned out my story will make it ok...I hope.
Updating: I'll generally try to update a chapter every Friday. I'm a working college student and also and I also just started a Youtube channel so I won't make promises. I'll try my best not to go too long without updating so don't worry. Also if I'm ever super free and really feeling it I might upload an extra chapter or two during the week so look out for those.
Thanks for giving this a try and I'd ask that you bear with me and stick through until the end but that's completely up to you.
Note: I do not own any of the RWBY characters. However, I do own all OC's and OC locations.
I hope you enjoy!

Chapter 1: Mysterious Lone Star
"Dammit!"
A thunderous boom shook the forest startling birds and other wildlife. Two huntsmen, one a black-haired man in an army green colored jacket and the other a man with brown hair that wore a light gray jacket raced through the wilderness of Sanus the ground shuddering beneath their feet as the midday sun, bathed their backs with heat.
"This was supposed to be an easy mission," the one in gray shrieked.
"It was," the other huntsman said. Or it should've been. A simple task of clearing out some Grimm that had gotten too close to a town out in the frontier. Normally they would've had their whole team with them, but they decided to split into duos and complete more missions to earn some more money all at once.
"Jeez. I figured luring the Grimm to a faraway location, to keep the town out of danger was a solid plan," the brown-haired huntsman exclaimed.
"The plan was great, there's no doubting that. We just weren't expecting something like that to show up." What they encountered had finally caught up and was slowly gaining. A colossal pile of rock and that formed a mobile body of landmass. "Just our luck that we somehow run into a Geist after we already finished the mission. And here I thought we'd only be dealing with a few Beowolfs, maybe an Ursa but this is ridiculous," the black-haired huntsman complained.
The duo ran until they broke the treeline and came across the rocky banks of a long dried up creek. They made a split-second choice to run along the creek bed, the trees weren't doing much to impede the massive Geist and the two huntsmen didn't have the luxury of barreling through the forest like the aforementioned Geist was.
The Geist rumbled behind them creaking and groaning as it advanced, deadset on crushing them.
"To hell with this," the brown-haired man yelled. Skidding to a halt he turned and aimed his weapon, a compact rocket launcher, and pulled the trigger. The rocket sped toward the Geist and crashed into it with a deafening explosion covering the Grimm in fire and smoke. Unfortunately, it proved futile as the stone giant continued its pursuit without ever slowing down and not showing a hint of damage.
"No way, not even a scratch?!"
"Idiot you should aim for its limbs to disable it." The black-haired huntsman raised his pump-action shotgun, roaring in defiance; he quickly fired four consecutive shots hoping to shatter the creature's arms and legs at the joints. Sparks flew as the shells bounced harmlessly off the monster's solid body, "Damn, just what kind of stone did this thing possess?"
"I'm no geologist, but it looks like any old rock you can find lying around. Maybe it's not the rocks but the Geist itself."
"Yeah, you might be right. That thing's not normal even for Grimm standards."
The Geist had stopped in its tracks and regarded the two huntsmen. This allowed them to fully see what the Grimm looked like. Now with a good look at the towering creature, they noticed that the red lines tracing around its body glowed more intensely, which caused the rest of it to glow an unearthly red. One thing was clear though the amount of malice that the stone titan emitted was suffocating.
Suddenly the mountainous Grimm creaked, it reached out one arm and grabbed a boulder the size of a two-story house. 'That all but confirms it,' the black-haired haired man thought. From what he learned, back when he was still a student, a single Geist wasn't capable of any sort of dexterous action. The bodies they formed were so simple that they lacked fingers. So instead they opted to use the gigantic bodies they constructed as living weapons. It would take multiple Geist each controlling a separate limb to achieve that sort of ability. There were many theories explaining why, but it was a well-known fact that solitary Geists weren't able to build complex bodies.
He could tell that this was a single Geist and a young one too. He knew because when it first attacked them it's movements were clumsy and awkward, even for a being with a body made of assembled pieces of stone. However, the Geist was able to quickly learn how to control its body and not only fend off the pair of huntsmen but overwhelm them to the point where they could only retreat. Even now its actions showed how fast it was evolving. The pause it took after they attacked it was most likely the Grimm analyzing what they had just done. The result of its analysis was the Grimm crudely mimicking their use of an attack from range. To see all this taking place before their eyes made one thing clear, what they faced was some new occurrence but what sort of phenomenon caused it?
They wouldn't have time to ponder on it further. The Grimm hefted the gargantuan boulder and hurled it at the two. It was too large and moving in at such a speed that the huntsmen wouldn't be able to dodge.
"Crap we are so screwed," the rocket launcher wielding huntsman wailed.
As the shadow of the boulder eclipsed their forms the two teammates held their arms up in a desperate and futile attempt to defend themselves.
Abruptly a figure leaped over them and straight at the incoming boulder. Faster than the two could see the person reached over their right shoulder, flourished a sword, and sliced the boulder vertically in half. The individual landed as the two halves of the newly split boulder crashed beside them. Although they couldn't see the new arrivals face they could make out some physical features. Male, seventeen age-wise, about six feet tall with a slim but athletic build. He wore an open fitted blue jacket with black and white accents, a white undershirt, slim fitted black sweatpants, and black, blue, and white high top sneakers. His most distinctive feature was his pure white, wild, and spiky hair. If the Schnee's weren't so famous and recognizable and since they weren't even remotely close to Atlas they might've mistaken him for one. The two huntsmen took a gander at their savior's weapon and were both confused and shocked at what it was. In the white-haired swordsman's right hand was a double-edged one-handed longsword just short of four feet in length. The sword was pure black with a faint blue gloss, the crossguard curved slightly up, and had a short length of chain with a star-shaped charm attached at the end of the pommel. What was most perplexing was the feeling that surrounded the sword like it was radiating power. Actually, both the sword and its wielder were giving off the same feeling.
'To think he cut that huge rock in half so easily with such a simple sword,' the black-haired huntsman thought. They hadn't been able to call backup seeing that there was no signal and he was certain that a single teenage boy would be sent. Which meant he'd heard all the chaos of their battle with the Geist. But what was he doing way out here? To his knowledge, the closest village around would be the one they'd led all the Grimm away from, and even then they had traveled even further thanks to the Geist chasing them down. 'There's no way this kid was just randomly in the middle of nowhere, not dressed like that anyway.'
For all his concern it seemed like his teammate was on a completely different page. "Hell yeah! Thanks for the save man. Heh. I don't know who you are, but now that you're here whaddya' say we team up and take this thing down?"
The white-haired swordsman took a step forward ignoring the huntsman's proposition. "Hey wait you don't plan on fighting that thing alone right?"
"I do," the teen spoke for the first time since arriving.
"But that Grimm isn't ordinary!"
Sharp royal blue eyes stared indifferently up at the glowing red Geist, "That doesn't matter, I'll handle this on my own."
Without another word, the white-haired teen burst forward with extreme speed directly at the strange Geist. The giant Grimm, which had oddly not attacked since the appearance of the teenaged stranger, reared up its stony left arm and swiped the ground sending a shower of shattered sharp stone towards them. While the two huntsmen chose to get out of the way, the swordsman charged fearlessly into the storm of earth, his sword a blue streak as he sliced his way towards the mountainous Geist. Emerging from the hail of shrapnel he swung the black blade across his body, blowing apart the Grimm's left leg. Off-balance, the Geist stumbled and would've completely fallen over if not for it quickly supporting itself with its left arm. Momentarily crippled but not defeated, the glowing behemoth retaliated, raising its right arm in an attempt to flatten the teenager.
"Watch out", the brown-haired huntsman warned.
His call was too late, the ground quaked and dust erupted from the point of impact obscuring their vision. When all was clear only a massive creator remained where the Grimm struck; the kid had seemly been smashed into nothingness. The two huntsmen were stunned into silence at witnessing a boy rush off to his death. Yet, if that were true why did the Geist look confused? They two were bewildered at its actions but came to realize that the Grimm hadn't crushed him.
Gasping the black-haired huntsman pointed to the sky and his partner followed his gaze. High above the teenaged swordsman fell headfirst towards the Geist. Flipping and righting himself at the last moment he brought his sword up with one hand atop the other and stabbed it straight through the Geist's bone mask, shattering it. Coming to a still the stone creature started to collapse but out from the body, the Geist's true form emerged. Finally seeing its real appearance the ghost-like Grimm was indeed different from the rest of its kind. Similar in shape the only noticeable difference was its larger size, wicked spikes, and the internal glow giving it a misty black and red aura. Without wasting a second the swordsman launched himself from the still falling stone body and sliced through the phantom-like Grimm's midsection; the Geist wailed and dissipated shortly after. The two huntsmen could only stare on in complete shock and awe. Unbeknownst to any of them, a blackbird watched from a low hanging branch.

Sometime after the Geist had been defeated; the two huntsmen and the lone teenager had made their way to a large cliff overlooking the forest. A Bullhead had been called and was currently resting behind the trio waiting to take the pair of huntsmen back to the village to collect their money. "Man we really can't thank you enough. Taking down that freaky Grimm, talk about badass," the brown-haired huntsman spoke. "Oh, the names' Owen Woods by the way, and my partner here is Yami Mikado. So since we owe you, how about coming back with us and splitting the Lien?"
"Thanks for the offer, but I'll pass."
"Ah, c'mon man you can at least take half of the reward. You deserve it for saving our bacon back there," Owen pleaded.
"We can at least take you back with us."
"It's fine, besides I haven't finished my business here."
"Which is something I'm curious about; you showed up right after that abnormal Grimm showed up," Yami accused, narrowing his eyes in suspicion. "Did you…"
"If you're asking if I led that Geist to you then you're wrong. I just happened to be in the area," the teenager interrupted.
"Then what's a kid like you doing way out here all alone?"
The swordsman remained silent.
"Hey, why don't you meet the rest of our team," Owen asked, trying to cut the tension.
"Sorry. Not interested."
Owen deflated at the rejection. The white-haired teen then turned toward the cliff signaling that he wished to be left alone. With the message clear, Owen and Yami made their way toward the Bullhead. "Oh wait," Owen turned and called back. "We never did catch your name."
The teen half-turned looking over his shoulder, "Alter... Alter Starverse."
Owen smiled and jogged over to the newly named Alter, "You have a Scroll right?" From his pocket Alter brought out the device. "Great," Owen grinned, plucking the device from Alter's hand. He quickly entered his contact information and handed it back. "You ever need anything, give me a call alright? It's the least I can do to repay ya." After one last goodbye, Owen rushed back and boarded the Bullhead.
"Why were you trying so hard," Yami questioned once they were seated and strapped down.
"It wouldn't sit right with me if I didn't. Besides, maybe we'll become friends and team up in the future."
Yami grunted, "He's strong I'll give you that but he doesn't look the type to make friends or be on a team."
"Aw don't be like that. You're just mad he showed you up," Owen teased.
"You're a moron, you know that?"
"A moron, who happens to be your best friend. Says a good lot about you huh?"
Yami grumbled as Owen let out a cheery laugh.
So, first chapter in the books. As you can see Alter is the stoic type and I know those kinds of characters are criticized for being too boring or too perfect. Well, the stoic badass antiheroes as main characters are my favorites but I'll try not to make him too one-note, boring, or a gary stu. He will have flaws and he won't be unbeatable. Also if you want a clear image of what Alter looks like then check my avatar it's my own personal art.
I feel like the chapter was long if I remember it was about eight pages or so. I'm not sure if each chapter will be equal in length. I don't want to try and put everything in one chapter but at the same time, I don't want to stop abruptly unless that's my intention. Also, I'm not sure how long this fic will be. I have multiple arcs planned out but I don't know if I want to do them all in one sitting or split them up into multiple stories. I'm leaning towards one whole story but if it drags out then maybe I'll split it.
The next update will be tomorrow Friday, October 2nd and after that, I will start the regular schedule.
Thanks again.
