It had been months since Pantheon had left Targon. As the spear of his people, he was the only one who could take on the task of hunting down the current host of the Darkin that ravaged his land, and after months, it was finally done. Home was the only thing he wanted now, home, and her.
His relationship with Leona had always existed, from the moment they met, through hardships and good times, they were close friends. But they maintained a professional distance that was required by the rules, until the Darkin attacked and nearly destroyed everything. Just because Pantheon had struck down a Darkin before did not mean that it was a guaranteed victory, and on the eve of his departure, Leona had confessed her love for him, and they shared in a kiss that had been years coming.
He left the next day and after months of roaming the continent, hunting down the Darkin, he had finally succeeded in ridding the land of their evil for a generation. The power of the aspect was fading in him, nearly exhausted from his battles, and he wanted nothing more than to return home and marry Leona, live out the rest of his days in honest work and surrounded by love.
The Sundered Forest was the last obstacle between Atreus and his home, a thick, sprawling expanse of enormous trees whose canopies are said to block out all light from reaching the forest floor. With the full power of Pantheon, the forest was easily bypassed, a simple flight powered by celestial magic. Limited by his own legs, however, Pantheon knew that crossing through the forest would take days, while circumventing it would take weeks. But the warnings were not without merit. The dark was not the only danger within the forest...
Elise felt him enter the forest, her network of webs able to detect the slightest movement from all around the forest. Not even a hummingbird could enter without her knowledge. As the shield and spear of a man broke through the imperceptible webs that hung between the trees, she comforted her children, the small spiders whose same webs she used to detect the intruder.
"There there, it's probably just another Noxian here to get the bounty on my head. You've done well," she says as the spiders dance across her fingers. She gently sets them down as they scurry away to rebuild the webbing behind the intruder.
Well then, I had better find out what this human wants, Elise thinks to herself as she channels her magic, transforming into a monstrous spider, gliding silently through the trees on silk ropes as strong as steel. This deep in the forest, an elaborate network of cables strong enough to lift a horse were laid throughout the treetops to allow for easy travel. As she approached the position of the human, slowly trudging his way into the forest, she transformed back into her humanoid form and sat on a tree branch to watch him.
He was walking like a man on a mission, eyes forward and marching at a steady pace, a torch in hand to light his way.
Ah of course... It's been so long I forgot that humans can't see in the dark, Elise muses as she watches him with curiosity. I suppose I should make myself known now. See what this human is made of...
She drops from the tree, silently descending on a thin line of silk until touching down on the crinkling leaves that coat the forest floor, the chitinous spikes at the ends of her legs sinking into the dirt. The man whirls around and raises his shield, positioning his spear at her.
Atreus raised his spear at the noise behind him, immediately adopting a defensive stance, low to the ground, his stance wide to absorb any attack that may come, but it never does. A monstrous woman, with an undeniable beauty, stands before him. Surprise colors his face for a fleeting moment, but he doesn't let his guard down.
"Hail, my name is Atreus and I am a traveler in these parts. I wish you no harm, but I am overly cautious as I seek no more than to return home as fast as I can," he says, attempting to get a read on this womans intentions.
She smiles, a tight-lipped smile that barely moves her eyes. "I am Elise. This is my forest that you are walking through, and I do not accept travelers who do not pay a toll."
Pantheon shifts his grip on his spear, ready to strike. He had plenty of experience with monsters far more dangerous than this one, but with his power fading, he would still have to be 100% alert. "What is your toll then, beast," he replies.
A genuinely hurt expression crosses her face at the insult, and she lifts her chin before replying, "First, an apology. I will not allow uncivilized men to cross through my lands. I have treated you with respect and I expect to be treated accordingly."
Atreus stands in awkward silence as his pride battles with his desire to end this encounter as quickly as possible. She is a beast, of course, but she clearly has human intelligence. I shall humor her as long as it takes to get through this forest. Anything to get back home...
"Very well, I apologize. I rushed to judgement, the result of a series of very long, tiring nights of travel. I only seek an end to my journey, and your forest served as a shortcut to that end," he says, lowering his shield and pointing his spear up to the sky.
She walks over to a fallen tree and sits on it, patting the trunk beside her, saying, "Sit. Your toll is simply to tell me your story. After that, you are free to go on your way."
Atreus hesitates, uncertainty filling his face.
She sighs and says, "I know what I look like, but I promise I am no monster in the traditional sense. I was cursed to be like this and simply live here alone because it is easier than trying to find a remedy... I just want company occasionally... Please?"
Atreus was not immune to her story, and her unconventional beauty certainly didn't help him resist. He sits next to her and begins to set up a small campfire, his torch nearly burnt out. She crosses her legs and watches him intently as he begins to tell his tale.
Elise's eyes roamed the mans form, taking in his physical and spiritual power. This is no ordinary man... Something about him reeks of power beyond the mortal realm. Perhaps that is what I have been missing all this time. Could this man be the one to finally grant me my wish?
Elise tunes back in to his story as he speaks of the woman he loves and how his greatest desire is marriage and children with her. A sadistic smile tugs at her lips for a moment before she replaces it with a feigned look of admiration.
"You are truly a romantic, Sir Atreus," she says, her admiration turning to sadness. "I'm afraid the only men who move heaven and earth for me are those trying to kill me."
"Perhaps once I return home, I could send for you and have the best healers in Targon have a look to see if they can fix you," he says, concern on his face.
Fix me?! I am more perfect than any human alive, she thinks to herself while saying, "I'm sorry but I don't trust you quite yet. For all I know, this could be another trap to lure me out of my safety in the forest. Last time I left these woods, I almost died..."
He rests a hand on her shoulder, a sense of duty compelling him as he says, "If there is anything I can do for you, please just let me know."
Of course you'd love to help a damsel in distress, wouldn't you, foolish boy. Elise looks at him with wide eyes and says, "There is something I have desired for a long time, and you may just be the only one who can help me. But it isn't something I think you'd want to give me..."
Atreus cocks his head, and asks, "What is it? I am sure we can come to some-" A sharp pain in his neck stops him mid-sentence. His hand goes to slap his neck, but is caught by the Elise's vice-like grip.
"Don't hurt my child," she says coldly slamming her other hand into his breastplate, knocking him back over the log and onto the ground, the venom coursing through his veins making him slow and lethargic.
His vision blurs and dims as the venom courses through his body. He hears her laugh echo through the trees, then all goes quiet, and darkness takes him.
