Chapter 1: Everything Changes, Yet Also Stays The Same?
So, things weren't looking up for him like he though they would. After a massive bombshell being dropped on him on his eleventh birthday, and 2 years of constant danger to his person while at his home away from hell, Harry really thought things were starting to look up for him.
Yeah, his godfather may be on the run once again, and his "friend" Ron was back to a shaky friendship with his other only friend Hermione, but things were still looking better than before. Sirius was hunting down Pettigrew with Remus, he might've finally had a chance to live somewhere other than boring ole Pivet Drive, and maybe he could finally have a decent year at Hogwarts with friends who would finally get along without wanting him to take a side. Sue him for thinking that life would have enough of screwing with him.
Still, he should've realized something was off when he felt there was something wrong with the book Mr. Malfoy slipped into Ron's sister's cauldron, or maybe before then when that barmy house-elf tried to set him up over the summer. Maybe he really should've expecting the year would not go well for him when he came back into his dorm room, to find out more about the weird diary he happened upon, just to see his stuff thrown around everywhere.
Really, the biggest wakeup call was when he woke-up just to overhear his "best mate" Ron blaming him for the other attacks and claiming he, "bloody well knew Potter was a dark wizard ever since he spoke in parseltounge during the first dueling club meeting!" Harry suppressed his first instinct, which surprisingly was irritation at no one believing he convinced the snake to not attack anyone, and stopped himself from snorting aloud in disbelief. 'I can't fucking believe this' Harry angrily thought to himself, gripping his wand tight as he could hear his other dorm mates gasping at Ron's exaggerated stories. '2 years of friendship down the drain. A bloke who knew me from when I cluelessly stumbled into his family before boarding the train first year. Who was with me through those stupid challenges in the leadup to standing against Quirrellmort. Who saw firsthand how my family treats me last summer. Who I threw aside studying and picked useless classes for. Everything I've sacrificed just to appease him and get a feel for how it feels to have friends and family, all for THIS?!'
Harry could feel his wand starting to get hot with the tip flaring a bright and sickly green. Yet as he unknowingly fell deeper into his own dark thoughts, he could feel his emotions shift from pure anger to an immediate and deep sadness. He unconsciously relaxed and loosened his grip on his wand as he teared up. 'It's so unfair' Harry whined mentally and turned over on his side. He waved his wand and silenced the curtains around his bed to keep noise in and stop it from going out, glad that learned how to do it to keep his dorm mates from looking at him out of pity after months of nightmares in his second year. Back then they thought he was terrified of Sirius Black, but really, he was plagued with nightmares of killing Quirrellmort the year beforehand.
As he thought back again to everything that had been happening to him, he could feel the tears start racing down his face. The façade he built to keep the crushing grief at bay cracked and he felt himself physically start to crumble as he cried for the childhood he lost due the Dursley's hate, the guilt for murdering a man in his first year, the unfair hand dealt to his godfather who came into his life like a breath of fresh air just to be taken away due to stupid circumstances, the cruel treatment he faced as the supposed "Heir of Slytherin", the loss of his only other close friend to petrification, and the betrayal of his first friend all over petty jealousy. He cried until he shook uncontrollably and felt himself cringe in exhaustion.
Yet as he sat there feeling pathetic and lost, he had a realization. "Since Ron, no Ronald, wants to betray me for attention, I don't need to waste my life building around him anymore at least. Poor Hermione would've loved to rub it all in his face" Harry told himself. 'And now I can spend more time with her instead of letting Ronald trash her then pull me away before I can say anything. Maybe this is just better for everyone' Harry mentally reasoned as he started seeing more bright sides based around his last thread of friendship.
'Yeah, and maybe I can convince Professor McGonagall to switch me out of these electives. I knew I should have left Divination when Hermione of all people had enough of it. Maybe then I won't have to listen to Trelawney's bogus predictions about horrible deaths and an evil student. Maybe Hermione can even help me study and I can catch up quick enough to join her classes next year?' He could feel the dried tear tracks on his face crumble as he started to smile while planning what would happen next. Sadly, reality wasn't through with him since he realized once again none of those plans mattered if Slytherin's monster wasn't stopped or if Hermione wasn't un-petrified.
How he drifted back to sleep with all of that on his mind? He couldn't tell you in the moment, but if you asked him a few years later, he would tell you they were watching him even then…
-SCENE CHANGE-
Waking up to get ready for classes seemed like a tough proposition. Honestly after overhearing that stuff last night Harry would've preferred to mope in bed all morning but knowing Hermione he knew she would have never let him skip class. Especially if he was that conflicted over some, "jealous prats like Ronald Bilius Weasley". After getting ready for the day then checking the time with a quick tempus, Harry decided he had enough time to visit his last friend before classes start, and he really couldn't stomach the thought of eating alone in the Great Hall with everyone staring at him like he was a murderer. 'Well, its not like it isn't true' he corrected to himself as he went straight to the Hospital Wing.
Luckily not a lot of people were up and about, so Harry was able to get straight there with minimal staring and whispers. As he rushed in, Madam Pomphrey gave him another pitying look and let him go straight to Hermione's bed. Harry pulled up a chair and tried to steady his emotions before he started crying again. It really hurt to see his energetic friend so still and afraid, not knowing how much time she has missed or how bad things are getting. The first night he came to visit he broke down thinking she would be stuck like that forever, but thankfully Madam Pomphrey informed him of a remedy for petrification involving mandrakes.
Now you might be thinking, 'Harry why keep coming here just to torture yourself knowing your friend is petrified and you can't do anything but wait?' and to that he says bollocks. When he was stuck there after the troll incident in their first year, Hermione refused to leave his side. Even though he dragged Ron with him to save her and he was the one who levitated the club to distract it, Harry was the one who took a hit from it while using what Headmaster Dumbledore branded as 'accidental magic' to blow its head off when it recovered and tried to smash Hermione again.
In second year, after passing out from a massive fall during a quidditch game where he almost died to catch the snitch while Dementors surrounded him and the Hufflepuff Seeker, Hermione stayed with him throughout the night while he was stuck waiting for Madam Pomphrey to clear him. Even this year when that bloody bludger busted his arm because of a certain crazed house-elf's misguided attempts to save his life, Hermione chewed out a Professor for vanishing all the bones in Harry's arm while Lockhart tried to show off his 'mystical healing magic'. She even stayed up with him all night while he had to suffer through that disgusting skele-grow potion. So of course, He's going to stay with his friend after all she had done for him.
"So classes this week have been dull without you. Everyone is still looking at me like I'm the Heir of Slytherin and even though the attack on you happened during the quidditch game, our ole pal Ronald has been telling people 'I must've arranged for it to happen while I was being watched so I would look innocent!' It's crazy how after we have been through, he continues to treat me like this. And that's forgetting how he treated you last year when he blamed you for Scabbers disappearing. Honestly, we should've just dumped him then, or maybe even as far back as first year when he said that horrible stuff to you on Halloween." Harry said to Hermione as he stared at her reflection in the broken mirror she held onto. "I know I pretend at times like I don't want to take sides between your arguments, or that I don't notice how you guys treat each other when I'm not around, but seriously, Ronald has been a grade O prat since I met him, and whether you can hear me or not I just want you to know that I would pick you over him any day 'Mione."
As he got up lost in thought about everything he got off his chest, Harry noticed that he was stroking her other hand that wasn't holding the mirror. His cheeks felt warm, but he kept hold of her hand in his and gripped it a bit harder to ground himself. As he held tighter, he felt something weird and leaned in to take a closer look at what was also clenched between her fingers.
Harry's lips scrunched into a frown as he worked a piece of paper out then uncrumpled it to see what it said. "Wow 'Mione, I did Not think you had it in you! Ripping a page out a library book? Who would've thought studious Miss Granger woul-…" and trailed off as he read what was on the torn page. His mind felt like it was racing faster than a Firebolt as he started connecting the dots. While there was a lot of scribbles on the paper, he could make out an explanation of an animal that could petrify prey indirectly with its killing glare and realized that was why Hermione was walking around with a mirror. It also explained how Colin survived but his camera was smoldering when he was brought in, or how Ernie was able to live because of the ghost in front of him when he encountered the monster. Lastly, Harry realized why he was the only one who could hear that voice going on and on about killing, ripping, and tearing until it was done. As he pushed the distracting doots to the back of his mind, he felt himself fall back into the chair in defeat.
"Of COURSE there had to be a bloody BASILISK on the loose in our school" He ranted, as he rubbed his forehead and kept reading. He realized Hermione didn't just discover the monster, but she also circled something and wrote pipes. "Oh Hermione you GENIUS! That explains how it is moving around the school! If you weren't petrified, I could hug the life out of you! I have to tell someone about this!" He grabbed his stuff and ran out before Madam Pomphrey could yell at him about not causing too much noise and disturbing her patients. As he ran through the corridor and got down to the second floor, he noticed Ronald's sister writing something on the wall. He slowed down and tried to get closer without making too much noise, but she turned and looked straight at him then bolted in the other direction.
Harry hurriedly glanced at what she wrote and immediately paled in fright. "Her skeleton will lie in the Chamber of Secrets forever?" he questioned as his mind raced again. 'Could she know anything about whats been happening?' he thought to himself, 'the writing is the exact same as before, maybe she is being controlled or blackmailed?' He didn't have a lot of time since she was getting away while he was wasting time considering everything. He decided to throw caution to the wind and charge after her instead of continuing down to the Great Hall and reporting Hermione's findings to McGonagall. 'After how she blew us off first year, she would probably discount it all anyway' Harry reasoned out as he chased after Ronald's sister into the second floor bathroom He and Hermione used to brew Polyjuice potion.
Caught up reminiscing and thinking he had her cornered, Harry wasn't ready for the red jet of light that hit him as he entered the bathroom. The last thing he could notice as he fell unconscious was the loud creaking of something opening and the feeling of his body getting dragged towards the sound. 'Good Job Harry, once again charging into danger without a plan or any awareness' was his last thought as he succumbed to the spell.
A/N: Hey, so this may be rough since I'm unbeta-ad for now and just wanted to get these first few chapters out before I decided to redo everything again. As you can tell from the categories, this will be a Harry Potter x Percy Jackson and the Olympians Crossover. Really this is the prequel to the main crossover and I wanted to write this out before I went wild in the main story. To anyone not interest in spoilers, like I said uptop, don't read the rest.
Ok to the rest of you still reading, this 'prequel' is gonna last from Harry's third year up to his 'seventh'. I wont go into detail on why that's in quotes, really just to add mystery since you are now thinking "well is Harry even gonna be at Hogwarts 7 years now?" Once you get to like chapter 3 and beyond you'll definitely be asking that question again and the answer is, who knows? But to get back on topic, anyone who read HP should be confused by the timeline so far. Harry is now in his 3rd year, with his second and third years being swapped. So by now harry has already been through the whole 'Sirius Black' thing and will be facing the more controversial threat in his third year. I do it this way since I'd rather not make so many changes just to have to sit through Prisoner of Azkaban and waste it all on nothing. Also to anyone questioning Harry being so emotional in this chapter, its due to something that started in his second year and will end within the next 2 chapters. To give a hint, this is sorta like Capslock harry from OoTP.
Now to those reading the A/N because they are questioning how deep of a crossover this is, I'll put it like this. I haven't reached the point where I want to juggle HP and PJO so this is pretty spoiler ish for down the line but I have planned for THIS story to be PJO coming to HP and the main fic/sequel to be HP going to PJO, literally. Take that as you will. Any burning questions should be answered by the chapters I post today just to see how people may feel about them before I go on a tangent and post the entire story. I have outlined the entire prequel (this fic) with full main plot and have the beginning chapter of the main fic written out, but I want to get some reactions first, see what may need to change, and fix things before it ALL goes up or I start working on the next fic. In terms of updates I'm going to give this about a week before I post the next series of chapters and will post in bursts after that. Nothing serious like months between updates since this is all just about written anyway. Also, anyone worried about this getting abandoned since I'm a new writer on here can rest easy knowing that the prequel is stand alone/ Well stand alone as in everything sort of gets wrapped up that's relevant to HP.
Now I'm gonna stop monologue rambling and let you guys get to the next few chapters. Hit me up with a review if you have any questions or insults! Ill be sure to not respond with "Don't like, don't read".
A/N Updated: Got into a few roadblocks with the next few chapters and decided to just fix these 2 up before I finish up the next. Im surprised at the amount of attention its gotten, especially considering the rampant errors, but I'm glad you all seem to like what you've seen so far. Updated chapter 2 should be up tonight, and chapter 3 should be in tmrw around this time at the latest. After that ill try and dedicate to at least a chapter a week (expect more than that). I'll for real see you all in a few hours this time.
