~~Author's Note~~
This story has some elements of another fanfiction. The fanfiction is called Living Vicariously by VigoGrimborne. We used elements of that fanfiction in our roleplay which this story is based off of. However, this fanfic is nothing like Living Vicariously, so don't feel like you have to read that one to follow this story (although I highly recommend reading it because it is a fantastic fanfic.) So I also want to shout out Spktra and Crazygamer313 for role playing with me. To do this roleplay justice, I decided to write a story. I hope everyone enjoys~
Chapter 1
One day in an archipelago on a small unknown island, a dragon and its rider landed on the ground kicking up some dust as the dragons wings flapping came to a stop. They split up, looking for anything of interest or use. The dragon padded softly to the north and after a few minutes of searching, returned.
"So Striker, did you find anything interesting on this island?" The human spoke to him in his well constructed dragon voice.
"Ehh… not really. There was a pond to the north but not much of interest." Striker responded in his calm soothing voice, purring.
"Well I could fill up my water supply… let's go there...Lead the way."
"Oki" He quickly responded. Striker trotted over to the pond to the far north of the island. As he reached the pond, Striker took a few sips being thirsty. His human rider followed suit, filling his bottles with water.
"It's a nice island we found here for rest." The human remarked.
"Yeah, it's nice and peaceful, great for a little rest." After a few moments of silence, the human asked,
"Do you think we'll find out why I can cast magic?"
"Maybe eventually… I'd say don't give up hope just yet, Vinur." Striker answered with a smile. Vinur lowered his body and sat next to the pond.
"Yeah maybe."
Striker lied down next to Vinur, yawning. At the peak of the rather cute night fury yawn, a nearby branch broke beyond the bushes. Vinur jumped up, pulling his weapon out but not extending it. Striker's ears perked up and he looked in the direction of the faint noise. Vinur then shouted towards the branch,
"Who's there?"
The breaking sounds started moving from one bush to another, in a circle around Vinur and Striker.
"Show yourself!" Vinur shouts, "dreki skilningi!" At the voice of these magical lines, Vinur's senses enhanced to locate the sound more easily. Striker got up quickly to see what was surrounding them. A figure uncloaked in the distance, not very clearly, although its white silhouette resembles a dragon. Vinur turned towards the figure and shouted,
"Show yourself! I know you can hear me!"
Striker saw the figure and growled defensively. The figure then cloaked again, and the noise of its soft footsteps slowly fade away into a cave nearby to the south.
"What was that?" Vinur asked Striker, sheathing his weapon.
"I-.. I think it was a dragon, at least that's what my senses are telling me…" He responded recalling back to what he saw.
"Wait, I have a spell for that, remember?"
"Y-yeah, and?"
"Let's go to the cave and search; it can't surprise us when we can see it… or when I can see it that is."
"Ahh ok, let's go." Striker and Vinur walked together carefully to where the cave was. At the entrance of the cave, Vinur casted a couple lines,
"Finndu drekann."
Vinur is now able to sense any dragons in the general proximity. Very light and faint blue outlines would border any dragon within a certain range. Very useful for the situation at hand.
"This should help us, I'll lead the way." Vinur unsheathed his weapon and walked into the cave. Striker followed shortly after, looking around for the dragon. The cave was unnaturally dark, even for Striker's enhanced night fury vision. There was various dragon and human bones scattered around the cave as they got deeper.
"I don't like this place," Vinur mutters, looking all around himself and slowly proceeding deeper into the cave.
"Y-yeah, this is an eerie place… we should get out of here if we can't find this dragon soon." Striker suggests while looking around at the bones. After walking a bit deeper, Vinur saw the dragon hanging from the ceiling with its eyes closed, presumably sleeping. Vinur looked up and asked sternly,
"Hey you, I can see you there, why were you stalking us?" Striker looked up but saw nothing.
"Uhh… what's up there?" Striker whispered.
"The dragon" Vinur whispered back. "Try using my senses, maybe you can see it then." Striker then used Vinur's senses through their bond, which they had formed with each other in the past, by reaching into his mind and finding Vinur's "pocket" allowing Striker to use Vinur's senses.
"Ah, I see it now." Striker warbles cautiously. The dragon suddenly flew deeper into the cave, still keeping its eyes closed.
"That's weird, let's follow it quickly! I think there's something strange going on…" Vinur figured, running deeper into the cave, following the mysterious dragon. Striker stopped using Vinur's senses and followed him, using echolocation to navigate the dark, deep cave. The dragon then landed on the ground suddenly, with its back to Striker and Vinur even though there was still more room to run deeper into the cavern.
"Hey you! Turn around! What's up with you?" Vinur asked harshly. Striker stopped and waited for it to do something, ready for anything. The dragon turned around quickly, finally opening its black demonic eyes. Vinur took a step back from the dragon, being taken back by the eyes. Striker did the same and got into a defensive stance.
"Who are you?" Vinur asked with a hint of fear. The dragon took a step closer, not blinking, staring at their direction, but because of its fully pure black eyes, it was not clear who it was staring at.
"Don't come closer!" Vinur commanded, spinning his scythe forward then stopping it abruptly, making the blades snap out. Striker stepped back and growled, not liking the look of the dragon. The dragon stared at the scythe before staring at Striker, approaching him. Striker stared back, being hypnotized by the eyes until Vinur jumps in front of him.
"Don't! I will defend ourselves!" He shouts to the dragon. The dragon then stared at Vinur.
"Back off." Vinur said in a sharp voice. Striker stayed behind Vinur, still being caught off guard from the eyes, but still ready to defend Vinur. The dragon tilted its head, looking at Striker.
"Take him and go…" It whispers.
"First answer me. Who are you and why were you stalking us?" Vinur asked again. It ignored Vinur and kept looking at Striker.
"N-no… We're not leaving without answers…" Striker repeated to the dragon.
"Take your human friend and leave, they are nearby…" It responded.
"Who is nearby?" Vinur would ask sharply. Striker asked confused,
"They?"
The dragon turns to Vinur somewhat surprised, then looks back at Striker, saying,
"Did you use it on him?"
"U-use what?" Striker asked.
"Your magic… How else would the human understand me?" It questioned.
"He didn't use his magic on me, I can understand dragons because I've been with them for four years." Vinur proclaimed. The dragon looks back at Vinur, hissing,
"I don't remember asking you anything." It gives him a death stare. Lightning flashed around the dragon making Striker and Vinur unable to see for a bit. When they opened their eyes, the dragon was gone. They stared at the empty cave for an awkward few seconds.
"Well that was odd, let's look for another island to rest on. I don't trust that dragon." Vinur tells Striker.
"Y-yeah, we better get out of here." Striker answers spooked, starting to run out of the cave. Vinur grabbed onto Striker and hopped onto his saddle while he was running. Striker quickly got out of the cave and immediately took off into the sky, looking for another island. After just a few minutes, they spotted one.
"There is another island, but it is inhabited, so we should be careful." Vinur says pointing to the village on one side of the island. Striker nods and lands on the opposite side of the island, where the forest was.
"Alright, the villagers should never come this far out." Vinur acquires.
"Alright, you think we can finally rest now?" Striker asks, groaning.
"Yeah, let's rest here for the night, goodnight Striker."
"Night Vinur" Striker whispers, yawning. He lies down beside Vinur and covered him with his wings. The two shortly fell asleep together.
