Prologue: Inherited Legacy
"Why is it that you called me here?"
It was difficult to hear with the wind brushing violently against his ears.
"YOUR PRESENCE WAS CALLED… BECAUSE ANOTHER HUMAN HAS ARRIVED." The roaring voice echoed throughout the borderless chamber. The creature accented the beginning and ending of every sentence.
"Another human? It's barely been ten years since the last one... How is this possible?"
"ARCEUS WORKS IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS. DO NOT DOUBT THE MEANING OF HIS ACTIONS."
"Fine. What is it that you want this poor soul to do?" The wind grew quiet in anticipation.
"JUST LIKE THE THREE OTHERS, I WISH FOR YOU TO FIND THE HUMAN, AND GUIDE THEM TO THEIR DESTINY. YOU WILL DO AS YOU ALWAYS HAVE."
"Oh, it should be as easy as the rest…" he rolled his violet, transparent eyes.
"REMEMBER, YOU SWORE AN OATH—"
His usual devious grin morphed into a frown.
"YOU WILL TRAVEL TO THE KINGDOM OF AWE. YOU WILL EXPLORE THE REGION UNTIL YOU DISCOVER THIS HUMAN…"
"Kingdom of awe?! Isn't that whe—"
"YES, EXPECT EXTREME HOSTILITY FROM THE CIVILIANS. UNLESS THERE IS NO OTHER CHOICE, STAY IN THE SHADOWS AND DO NOT EVER REVEAL YOURSELF TO THE PUBLIC. THERE IS ALREADY GREAT CONFLICT AND TURMOIL IN THE AREA; YOU ARE NOT NEEDED TO STIR OLD FLAMES."
"Out of all the places I could go, why does it have to be there…?" His voice drifted with the breeze.
"YOU HAVE BEEN EXCUSED FROM MY DOMAIN. REMEMBER, YOU ARE THE BACK THAT IN WHICH SUPPORTS AND STRENGTHENS THE HUMAN THROUGH CRISIS."
"Blah blah blah—whatever… See you again when I will have saved the world five times."
Author's Note: I absolutely hate prefacing any sort of speech or work of fiction, but I feel it's necessary here. If you're looking for a bog-standard PMD fanfic with normal archetypes, you're in the wrong place. This fic is supposed to branch out into themes not normally found in this medium. The first 3-4 chapters are extremely sloppy and were merely a beta run to see if I could even write properly; they will be thoroughly revised when I've finished the first 10 chapters. If you dislike them, stride on a little further, and maybe you'll change your mind. Onto the actual contents, all I can say is there will always be more questions than answers. If your brain is rattling trying to piece together the puzzle, then I've done my job correctly. Anything dealing with Ghosts (alongside their 3 oracles), humans, and Ethan are meant to be expanded on in the future and are meant to be mysterious, but it is definitely advised to start piecing things together even if you're missing the majority of the pie. If you do feel extremely lost, then I'd happily help out with the confusion! I'm always open to talk about whatever, and feel free to just message me and tell me to start working on the next chapter (seriously, I really need the motivation). On a completely different note, there are plenty of references to Halo, Pink Floyd, and whatever else gains my attention during my writing, so be on the lookout. Last of all, I hope you enjoy your stay!
