Caroline paced in the room waiting for the lord of the manor. What horrible luck did she have to catch the attention of the one man who will kill her before the morning sun rises tomorrow morning.

She's heard the horror stories of the on goings of the palace when she was a young girl. How the two lords were beasts. Blood sucking murderous beasts. Vampires. The very monsters her parents trained her to look out for and avoid at all costs. Of course, Caroline was a magnet for danger and even if she tried to stay away one vampire came across her path every now and then.

She can deal with the newbie vamps; they attack without thinking the bloodlust overpowering them. They may be stronger and faster, and some may get a hand up on her, but she has always managed to get away leaving a desiccated body with a stake through its heart.

The older ones are harder. They have more control over their skills they have learned enough to know to compel first then attack. Some she can get the jump on but the majority well she is grateful to have escaped with her life give or take a few scars and bruises and a couple pints of blood.

Of course, then there are worse things to have happened to her. Her parents were both dead now thanks to vampires and soon she would join them because Lord Niklaus Bloody Mikaleson decided to take a stroll out in the market today.

Niklaus Mikaleson was the worst of the worst. If the rumors she heard held any truth, then he was one of the oldest if not the oldest vampire in existence. He was supposed to be like a gazillion years old or something and killed without thought.

She jumped as she saw the door open and he walked in.

"It is a courtesy to bow or curtsy to your superiors as a sign of respect."

Caroline gulped but stayed as still as she could. She would usually give in, bide her time, and wait for an opening to attack or make a run for it, but not with him. She knew better. Every night for as long as the lord has come into town, he has taken a woman into the palace never to come out again. Or so she's heard.

"No. Well then would you explain who exactly you are."

She was a fighter, but she knew when she was beat, and she wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of begging for her life.

"If you're here to kill me just do it." Her voice trembled a bit and she hated herself for it, but she gave a small thanks to her control that allowed her body to remain still.

"Now why would I do that. I mean I am going to kill you eventually but certainly not tonight. Maybe tomorrow," he pauses and looks into her eyes "tonight though you need to tell me who you are and how much you know."

"Know what?"

"Well that answers at least one question. You know about vervain. How do you know about it? Where did you get it?"

Caroline paused and took a step back as he took one forward.

"Now, love no need to be shy. Things would go a lot easier for you if you just told me what I need to know."

"You're just going to kill me anyway."

"Getting information is my priority at the moment and considering you can't be compelled that leaves two options. Now, I promised Elijah that we would do this his way. No killing. Torture however is a bit of a grey area."

"My parents. They told me about vampires. How vervain helps you avoid compulsion and where I can get it."

"And your parents how do they know?"

"My father's family has known for generations about vampires. My mother barely found out a little bit after I was born, but it doesn't matter. If you are planning on threatening my family, you are a bit too late for that."

Klaus looked at the woman in front of him. He knew she was nervous, had heard her pacing before he entered. Saw how she was startled by his entrance and how her heart pounded in her chest. Even heard the tremble in her voice as she stuttered when she first spoke to him. But now. He saw no fear just contempt and… acceptance. Was she really okay with dying? Apparently, her parents were dead, but surely, she must have something to live for.

"When did you last take vervain. This morning?"

"Yes."

"Well then the vervain should be out of your system by tomorrow afternoon."

"What do you want with me?"

Klaus smirked at her and raised his hand to brush a strand of hair back behind her ear but stopped and turned around. He could hear Elijah telling him to ask her more questions from the other room.

"Do you know anything about the dead vampire that turned up in the alley just across from the town square. Or the one outside of the tavern what was it called The Grill? Then there was also Rousseaux's as well. If I recall, there was even one more lying dead at the bottom of the bell tower."

Caroline gulped alright so maybe she had stumbled into more than a few vamps and decided to take them out.

"Nope."

"Love, I might not be able to compel you, but I don't need to, to know that you are a horrible liar. How did you do it?"

"I don't know what you mean?"

"You killed them."

"Yes."

"By yourself."

"Yes."

Klaus' eyebrows rose. She was telling the truth. It wasn't hard to figure out that along with vervain tips her parents trained her to kill vampires.

"Do you know about any other hunters in town."

"Hunters?"

"Yes, hunters."

"-I don't know any hunters."

"Now that's just not true."

"I don't know any hunters who are in town right now."

Klaus smirked. "Alright. None in town. How many do you know?"

"One. Don't even bother asking who because I'm not telling you."

"Wouldn't dare love. Just answer me this. Is he a member of The Five?"

He saw as her brows furrowed in confusion, but her heart remained steady she had no idea who The Five were.

"You don't that's good..." Klaus paused before remembering that he still didn't have a name to put to her face.

"What's your name, sweetheart?"

Caroline gulped. Her name. Well her name wouldn't matter in a couple of hours so why not.

"Caroline Forbes."

Klaus paused at that. He has heard of the Forbes family. They were smart not to go after him, but they were dangerous, and he has had to send people every once in a while, to check in on them. Standard procedure with vampire hunters.

"You are William Forbes' daughter."

"... Yes. He goes… used to go by Bill though."

"I have heard of your family they have quite a history. Your father was impressive I heard he managed to fight off compulsion without vervain. Was it true?"

Caroline nodded. She was getting tired and a bit thirsty, but there was no way she would ask him for anything.

"Did he ever teach you how?"

"He tried. He explained how, but it didn't work. I... I tried what he told me, but it didn't…"

Klaus nodded. She was being honest although he could tell she was holding back. She was also a bit hungry if her stomach growling was an indicator.

He made his way towards the door before pausing and turning to face her. "I'll have a servant bring you something to eat and take you to one of the bedrooms for you to sleep."

Caroline nodded and watched as he left. Only letting out a sigh of relief as she heard his footsteps receding. She wanted to know why he was giving her a room but decided not to question it.

"Well." Klaus said as he entered the living room taking the glass of bourbon that Elijah handed him.

"We should wait till the vervain leaves her system to make sure she is telling the truth."

"And if she is?"

"We kill her and move on to the next lead. A letter from Rebekah and Kol arrived earlier today there is suspicious activity near Nova Scotia. Kol thinks it might have to do with The Five."

Klaus nodded. The Five have been practically untouchable for the last century, the fact that Rebekah and he even stumbled upon them was a bloody miracle. Well miracle was probably not the right word it was more like they were lucky to even stumble upon them thanks to their little sister's misfortune with love.

The last time they faced them Klaus had been so close to murdering the lot of them but then Elijah had to burst in the room, mumbling some nonsense about a stupid curse that probably wasn't even true, distracting him and leaving the hunters an opening to escape.

Which still pisses him off. Come on. He was an original and by some mystical force, Klaus was betting they probably had a witch in their pocket, they escaped and disappeared without any sort of trace he or his siblings could follow.

"If she isn't? What then? She's a Forbes."

"Yes, but even if she manages to be able to overcome compulsion like her father there is only so much pain a human can take."

Klaus nodded he knew enough about torture to get people to talk, but torture would be wasted on someone like her. Perhaps a softer approach would cause her to tell the truth. He would have to be careful, not too patronizing, he had a feeling that she would not respond well to that, so maybe just a direct approach with an underlying layer of charm.

"I'll take care of her. If she is telling the truth, then we can leave tomorrow night to meet with Kol and Bekah. If not, you should go without me. Just scout out the area and if it's really them lay low and send me a message. The only way we are going to take them down is if we do it together. They might be able to get past one of us but not when were all together."

"Indeed. I will let Rebekah and Kol know to expect me and keep a low profile."

The room they gave her was beautiful. It was absolutely gorgeous, but at the moment Caroline was focused on the vampire guard waiting outside her room preventing her from escaping. She made her way across the room to look out the window. There was no guard but there was no way she could make the jump out the window. The palace had four levels and she was currently on the third. If she jumped, she would live, but would probably end up breaking more bones than she was comfortable with.

There was a balcony landing on the fourth floor though. It would be a major risk especially if her guard heard her open the window and decided to enter her room. She was also quite tall but not even close to be able to grab the landing and even if she managed, she wouldn't be able to get out by going through the inside. If she reached the roof she would just be further away from the ground.

Maybe a broken arm wouldn't be that bad? As long as her legs worked, and she manage to run should a broken bone matter. It would heal... eventually. She knew a healer who owed her dad a favor maybe they would be able to fix her up. If worse came to worse, she could always get some vamp blood and lay low for a couple of days to make sure she healed with no risk of turning.

A plan quickly forming and survival at the forefront of her mind Caroline carefully turned one of the chairs by the table and laid it on the floor. She raised her leg knee bent upwards before swiftly and forcefully bringing it down breaking the leg from the chair. She heard the door opening, but she expected that and turned throwing the stake at the vampire in the entrance.

Klaus was making his way to his chambers which happened to be across from Caroline's. He could see Josh leaning against the door impatiently. Apparently, the young vamp had a date, but was now missing it to be guarding a human instead.

He was about to greet him when he heard the sound of wood breaking. Klaus met Josh's eyes, pulled him out of the way entering the room and gasped in surprise as he found a wooden chair leg embedded in his stomach and a blonde making her way towards the window.

Klaus yanked the leg out and watched as Josh flashed in the room and grabbed Caroline's arm. Caroline turned and jabbed Josh in the stomach with her elbow causing him to release his grip before she grabbed him punched him in the face and then snapped his neck. She would feel bad, but he was just a baby vamp in her way at the moment and she really needed to get out. She opened the window the rest of the way and jumped.

Klaus's eyes widened as he watched the blonde beauty attack her guard and proceed to jump out of the window. 'The hell.' Klaus quickly flashed out of the palace and reached the bottom of Caroline's chambers catching the blonde and stumbling to the ground with her on top of him.

"Hello love."

Caroline gasped before trying to get up but quickly found herself on her back with him looming over her.

"What exactly were you thinking."

Caroline gulped before closing her eyes.

Klaus shook his head then grabbed her face gently his fingers moving from her jaw to her neck.

"Nothing to say. Fine." Klaus muttered rising from his position before picking her up and flipping her over his shoulder.

"Put me down."

Klaus chuckled before walking back inside not using his speed and making his way to his room.

"You'll be staying here. Don't even think about running again."

"Why don't you just kill me."

Klaus paused before he set her down. "Is that what you want?"

Caroline turned away from him but didn't reply. Klaus shook his head then made his way toward the door. "You better be here when I come back. Try running and I will find you."

"Elijah." Klaus said bursting into his brother's chambers.

"Where is she?"

"My chambers. I'll be keeping an eye on her tonight…" Klaus trailed off looking to his left. There was something about that girl. Caroline. She was a fighter. She said she wanted to die maybe get it over with, but he knew if she had any chance for survival, she would take it.

"Maybe she can be useful?"

"Useful how?" the brunette asked skeptically.

"She's a hunter. Not one of The Five, but she is good maybe some training… She wants to live. I can make her work for us. She can help us defeat The Five."

"She is human."

"Exactly! She is human. Not only that but with her family's reputation she could get close. Last time The Five went after Bekah. They tricked her and tried to kill her. Kill us. This time we play them at their own game."

Elijah looked at his brother but stayed silent considering all the possibilities.

"You want to use Ms. Forbes to infiltrate The Five and pave the way for us to stop them."

Klaus nodded.

"If she is immune to our compulsion she would never agree. She has also been raised to hate our kind and need you remember that she has already attempted an escape."

"I can get her to agree."

Caroline sat on one of the armchairs eyeing the window trying not to flinch as she heard the door open.

"Not thinking about jumping are you sweetheart."

Caroline gave him a quick glare but other than that didn't reply only watched as he sat on the chair opposite of her.

"Come on, love. I want to help you I do, but if you are going to be like this than maybe my brother is right."

"You want to help? Let me go and never bother me again."

Klaus smirked, "So she speaks."

"What more do you want. I already told you everything. You would get nothing from killing me."

"My thoughts exactly. I have a deal for you, love. I need to use you for something. If you help me. I'll let you live and give you my word that you won't see me again."

Caroline looked at him suspiciously, "What do you need me for?"

"My family is tracking a group of hunters. We need you to get them to trust you and lead them to us."

"You want me to help you kill more hunters! Why would I do that?"

"I thought freedom would be a good enough motive."

"Why me?"

"You've been trained as a hunter. Your family name is well known among some circles. You are immune to compulsion and at the moment your life is in my hands."

Caroline thought the information over. She hated vampires. If she helped him, she would lead hunters, like her, to their deaths. But… if she didn't do it, she would die, and the hunters would probably still end up dead. Klaus didn't seem like a vampire who would let a blimp in his plan stop him from killing.

"You would let me go and leave me alone?"

"You'll never see me again."

"Okay. I'll do it."

Klaus smiled and stood up. "You should get some rest. The bed is yours for the night. I'll be here to keep an eye on you just so you don't get any ideas. You did stab me with a wooden leg earlier. So, you understand I'm not taking any risks and just in case you want to try anything you should know that I'm not a regular vampire. There is nothing that can kill me."

Caroline nodded she already had an idea that he was different and that he would be keeping a closer eye on her.

A/N Hey everyone so let me know what you think of this I am going to mark this as complete for now. If anyone wants me to continue let me know I have more chapters already written up, but not sure if I should really continue this was just an idea I came up with a while back and I finally decided to post it.

Also I suck at titles so if anyone has any ideas for a better one that be great :)

Thank you so much for reading and please let me know if you liked the story or why you didn't.
