Damien spotted her first. Her long (almost see through) yellow nightgown caught his attention. He paused as he balanced himself on the side of a building. He could hear his father's shouting out at the Joker, his older brother following his orders, while all Damien could do was keep a look out for other villains.

Just another day in the life of twelve-year-old Damien Wayne, aka, the newest Robin.

The massive break was one of the worst yet, and Damien was super eager at first to prove himself to his father and brother. But The Batman had other plans for him.

"Stay and keep a look out." Was all he told him once they got downtown.

Damien opened his mouth to protest but with one squinted eye from the bat made him silent. He grumbled and leaned up against the building with his arms crossed and him glaring at the ground as the batman moved swiftly away.

"Next time, lil' bro." Dick Grayson snickered as he ruffled his black hair. Damien scowled at him and slapped his hand away and watched as he to followed the batman towards the chaos.

After awhile, Damien, gotten bored and started to scan the roof tops to see if any of the villains thought about making a break from it from up there. That's when he saw her.

A young girl about his age, staring down at one of the rooftops. She had long blonde hair, her blue-green eyes shimmered with tears, and even though the yellow nightgown tried to hide it, she looked ghostly white.

Damien quickly bounced from the building as he got closer to her he heard her crying softly. He almost rolled his eyes. What? Was she too scared to jump to her death but not scared to be inches away from it?

"You chickening out?" He asked, finally, as he reached the rooftop.

The girl stiffened then slowly turned around to face him. Damien didn't even flinch as the wind picked up. One more move and the girl was done for.

"Wow, the great Robin of Gotham has graced me with his presence." The girl said, Damien was surprised to find it hollow, and no kindness at all in it, she sounded just like -.

Me.

Damien thought, surprising himself at the realization.

"Don't flatter yourself." Damien snickered. "Just thought I'd watch and see if you'd jump..."

The girl's face twisted into anger.

"So, you weren't going to try and stop me?" She asked.

"Why? Were you expecting someone too?" Damien shot back.

"I, I thought that's what you hero's do." The girl snarled back.

She hadn't moved from the ledge and the chaos from below only added as background music for them as they stood in front of each other, as if time had stood still for just them.

"You didn't care who saved you, am I right?" Damien asked finally, "The point is, you weren't going to jump at all. All the reason why you waited until now to make a show when we hero's made an appearance. You need protecting from someone, or something, and this was the only way to get our attention. That someone happened to be me." He continued.

"I was to going to jump. -." The girl began.

"You weren't or you'd have done it already. You have something holding you back, you don't want to die. Do you?" Damien continued, "and you feel guilty about something, or you think no one cares."

The girl scoffed.

"You seem to know me so well in the last five minutes we've talked." She told him sarcastically.

"Did you mean to do what you did?" Damien asked, ignoring her remark.

The girl blinked.

"N,No." She answered, surprising them both.

"Did you want to do what you did?" Damien asked.

He stayed rooted to the spot not bother to inch any closer to the girl, if he did, it would startle her and accidentally make her fall to her death. He could hear his father now, scolding him, telling him he wasn't yet ready to handle super hero work...

The girl shooked her head.

"I, I couldn't stop it. W,What happened. I, I was ordered too -." She told him.

"Ordered too?" Damien asked.

Who could possibly order a twelve-year-old girl to do something so horrible that it would cause her to want to kill herself?

"By who?" He asked.

The girl shooked her head more quickly at the question.

"I, I'm ordered not to say, in, in case we was to get caught..." She suddenly winced and fell silent at once.

"Look, here's the deal. You promise not to jump, and I promise to help you any way I can." He told her.

The girl stared at him.

"I'm a hero." Damien said, with a shrug. "That's what we do."

"Fine." The girl grumbled, and slowly stepped off the ledge. "You win, tonight, Robin." She said, walking swiftly passed him.

Damien froze.

It was like something jolted between them as she slightly brushed up against her. Rather she felt it too or not she made no indication as she climbed down the fire escape and flipped into her bedroom.

Damien climbed down after her but stayed on the fire escape and peered into her room.

It was oddly girly for his taste. Pink walls, decorated with punk rock posters, pictures of what looked like her family Damien noticed though that the girl wasn't in any of them, and a light pink canopy bed.

What surprised Damien was that there was a pallet on the floor and as the girl went to sit on it and pull the covers back he asked,

"Why sleep there? It's cold tonight, you seem to have a perfectly warm , nice bed right there." He said, pointing to it.

The girl avoided where he was pointing and muttered,

"I, I can never sleep in that bed, again. Not after..."

Suddenly a door opened from somewhere in the apartment and it slammed shut. Damien heard a loud bang as if someone had knocked into something and the sound of glass breaking.

"Damn it!" Slurred a voice.

The girl stifled a gasp and quickly walked over to her light switch and shut the lights out. She then turned to Robin who was still staring at her.

"EMMA! GET OUT HERE!" The same voice bellowed.

The girl's left eye twitched.

Emma, huh?

Finally got a name.

"Need me to take care of him?" Damien whispered, as he cracked his knuckles. He knew that tone far too well, it was a tone away from a beating.

"N,No." Emma said, quickly. "H,He's my foster father and, and not the one I've been talking about anyway. So, So, please. Just, leave -."

"EMMA!" The voice bellowed again, her door busted open and Emma quickly pulled the curtains shut, and whirled around to him just as his hands reached her throat. "When I say, come, Emma," Damien heard him hiss in her ears. His hands clinched into fists when he heard her choking and gagging against his grip, "you come. Got it!"

Emma whimpered and Damien could see her shadow through the curtain as she nodded her head vigorously.

The man scoffed, and Damien saw him slowly let go of her.

"Bed. Now." He ordered.

Emma whimpered again.

"N,No! Please! Dad -. I -." Emma pleaded.

SMACK!

"I told you never to call me that! I only took you in because your Grandfather paid me wholesomely. I will not let you staying here go to waste! Now. Get. In. Be -."

Before Damien could stop himself he pushed his hands out so he could get Emma out of harms way, and flipped kicked what seemed to be a very over weight man with a double chin fall flat on his butt.

The man, surprised, blinked once, twice, then scowled at Damien.

"Who's this, Em? You're boyfriend?" He snickered.

"I would refer Robin." Damien snarled at him.

"Robin, eh?" The man said, as he wobbled up on his feet. "What's someone like you doing here?" He asked.

"Obviously your job." Robin shot back. "Protecting Emma."

Emma stared at the boy.

Now he was trying to protect her?

Where was that enthusiasm when she was attempting to jump just minutes ago?

If he hadn't landed behind her and started to stall her. She wouldn't have to put up with this now, put up with him. Now, here Robin was, standing in front of him, his staff held out as if ready to defend her.

"Doesn't look like she needs protecting?" The man asked, his eyes shown brightly passed him to her, "Well, Emma? Tell him. Tell him you don't need protecting. Or shall I call your Grandfather on the subject?" He asked, threateningly.

Emma whimpered again as Damien turned to glance at her.

"I, I don't, need -." She began.

"I promised I'd help you in anyway I can, right?" Damien reminded her.

Emma choked back a sob and nodded as the man inched his way towards Damien, Damien didn't even take his eyes off Emma as he started beating up on the man with his staff. First in the face, then in the ribs, next poking him in the stomach so hard that he fell hard again.

"Something you should know about me, Emma, since I've figured you out pretty well in the last ten minutes." Robin said, as the man got up quickly this time and ran straight for him.

Damien stood his ground and kicked up from the ground, using his staff as leverage he swirled around and kicked gutted the man sending him flying into the wall of Emma's room with such force that it made a crater in it.

He landed on his feet, barely even breaking a sweat, as he bent down and held out his hand. Emma looked at it then up at him in awe.

"I always keep my promises." He said.

Emma slowly took her hand in his and Damien felt that invisible jolt again. This time he was sure Emma felt it too because she gasped and tried to pull her hand away but Damien squeezed it tightly, and held onto it.

"Come with me." Damien whispered. "I know someone who can help you out and won't let anyone else bother you again. I promise you that." He said.

"You -..." The man grunted, as he pried himself off the dry wall of Emma's room.

Emma froze, and looked over at him.

"Ungrateful brat!" He shouted. "Just wait until I tell your Grandfather! He'll have your head on a silver platter and feed it to his underlings once I finish telling him what happened tonight! You'll never have a moment's peace -. I'll -..."

Damien's anger rose inside his chest and he pulled something from his utility belt. It was tiny and Emma could see that he didn't take his eyes off the man as he bit something off from the top of it and threw it towards him.

The man froze as he glared down at the small round object, then back at them.

"You little -." The man growled at Damien just as smoke began to spill out of the object.

"You wouldn't say anything," Damien snorted, as he pulled Emma close to him. She squirmed and flinched but didn't pull away and clinched to his cape until her knuckles turned white. "Unless you want those checks to stop coming, am I right?"

The man could only gape at him as Damien lifted himself and Emma out of the apartment building just as the round object exploded sending flames dancing outside the window they just came out off...
