Chapter 1: Thinking back some more

Flashback

August 17th, 2000

After a lovely dinner that was just for the two of them, Sara and Grissom stepped inside the beach house, the same beach house that use to be his cousin's before it turned into his, along with Emily and Tyler, to rent during his first four years of college, then became Emily and Tyler's plus Sara's (until she went back to Berkeley), while Grissom was in Chicago then Minneapolis, and now it was Sara and Grissom's again.

Sara had just turned on the lights before family/friends all shouted. "Surprise! Happy Birthday!"

Not surprised, but acted like it, Grissom smiled. "Wow guys, you really got me there."

They all chuckled before Tyler, who had a smile on his face, called him a liar, causing another round of laughter while Grissom, with the smile still on his face, walked towards his mother, who had been standing in front of everybody, so they could share a hug and kiss.

Throughout the evening, everybody was moving about the living room/outside on the deck, talking and laughing with one another, just enjoying each other's company, then at one point in the evening, Grissom looked across the room while talking to a few cousins of his, and saw Sara holding baby Saddie, the first child from Tyler and Emily, and while there was joy in her eyes as she held that precious little girl, there was a sadness there as well, and knowing why it was there, sent a little pang in his heart.

He mentally shook those thoughts away before he continued his talk with his cousins.

A few hours later

Eventually the guests started leaving, and after Grissom closed and locked the front door once the last person walked out, he asked. "You got the dishes?"

Sara, who had picked up a few cups from the coffee table, smiled. "Yeah, no problem."

"Thank you."

After Sara nodded, Grissom headed for the bedroom.

Once she got done with the dishes, which weren't actually too many, she grabbed a bottle of wine and two glasses before heading towards the bedroom, hearing the calming music the closer to she got towards the cracked door, then pushed it open to see the room in candlelight while Grissom had just finished lighting the last candle on his nightstand.

They have eye contact as he blew out the match, then she smiled with her eyes sparkling. "Are you planning something, Mr. Grissom?"

He noticed the bottle of wine, their special wine in fact, in her hand with two glasses before giving her a smirk. "I believe Mrs. Grissom has something a little planned herself."

She shyly smiled as she walked towards their dresser, causing Grissom to lightly chuckle as he walked to meet her there, and once he was near her, he placed his hand on the small of her back while she poured the white wine.

After handing one glass to him, which he took, she held up hers, toasting him. "Happy 30th Birthday, babe."

He smiled as they lightly clinked their glasses together. "Thank you, honey. And not only for what you just said, but for the evening as well."

She smirked, knowing how he feels about parties, as he was taking a sip. "Even the party?"

He chuckled after swallowing, then nodded as he moved closer to her. "Yes, and I'm sure you didn't work alone, I bet my mother wouldn't take no for an answer."

She chuckled with a nod before moving her free hand up to cup his cheek. "You would be correct. But, to be fair to her I wasn't exactly resisting it. She...I, well both of us wanted you to have a good birthday."

With love in his eyes, he whispered. "And I did."

She smiled with love in her eyes after she took another sip of wine before setting her glass down and taking his hand. "Good, but just so you know, the night's not over." He took another sip of his wine and sets it on the dresser before letting her lead him towards the bed.

They were almost there when Grissom moved so he was in front of her, then spoke while she looked at him with curiosity. "Before we continue, there is something I would like to ask."

"Ok."

Even though he felt confidant about what he wanted to ask, there was still a little nervousness, so he cleared his first before continuing. "How would you feel if we start trying?"

Sara had to admit she did not see that coming, at least not for another year, possible two, liked they talked about on their wedding night, so she looked shocked. "You want to start trying for a baby?"

Now he became a little shy about it. "I mean, only if you want..."

He started to shake his head and backtrack on his suggestion, but she squeezed his hand and spoke softly, reassuring him he did nothing wrong on asking her that. Plus, she wanted him to be completely honest with her. "Griss?"

Knowing what was in his heart, he had to be truthful on this, so he nodded, replying softly. "I do, and I know it hasn't even been a year since the last time we talked about this, but at the time I didn't take in account that..."

Sara cuts him off again with sigh. "That our closest friends would have a baby, who we see almost everyday, before they even celebrated their first year of marriage together, making us, unintentionally, imagine what it would be like to..."

He cuts her off as he cupped her cheek. "Have one of our own again, this time to keep and watch him or her grow." As few tears started to go down her cheek, he wiped them away and reassured her. "I'll wait for as long as you want to, I promise no pressure. But I want, no need, to be honest with you, I want to become a father." He moved his other hand to her stomach as he finished with emotion. "To start our dream come true, which I know is slightly altered than how it was suppose to be and will always feel that way, but a dream I still want with you."

They had a solid relationship, with their love only getting stronger as time passes them by, both have jobs with decent incomes, not only because of their recent promotions but with Grissom starting to do seminars around the state he was earning more, and their own roof over their heads, so in their eyes they have everything they ever wanted since they became a couple and had talked about their future...except, their child, and while they will always love and think of their little girl, it was time to think about starting on their altered dream, so with that in mind, Sara started to nod again with tears in her eyes. "Ok."

Grissom's eyes started to sparkle as he smiled. "Yeah?"

She sniffled with another, this time reassuring, nod. "Yeah, let's start trying."

He brings her to him and they do a few kisses before they place their foreheads together and he whispers with emotion. "I love you so much."

Softly, she whispered in return. "I love you too."

As she was pulling back, he picked her up bridal style, causing her to gasp with a smile as she wrapped her arms around his neck before he walked them towards her side of the bed, laying her down and joining her so he was above her while her arms wrapped around his neck again.

They just looked at one another for several minutes of silence before he spoke softly. "But let's try and not put pressure on ourselves, it's just you and me, like we've been a thousand times."

She smirked as she ran her fingers through his hair. "A thousand, huh? Have you been keeping track? Although, I do think you need to rethink that because our number could be a lot high..."

He cuts her off with a chuckle. "You know what I mean."

She nodded with a smile. "I know, but I couldn't resist teasing you."

He smiled in return then his eyes started to become a little darker with passion. "And I can't resist you."

Now with passion in her voice, she replied. "Prove it."

"Gladly."

With that, they started kissing, getting passionate each second before they slowed down and he pulled back, bringing her with him so she was now sitting up, then he moved down the bed so he could take off both of their shoes and socks while she unbuttoned her pants so he could take them off while he was already down there.

Once that task was done, he moved up her body, watching her as she was unbuttoning her shirt, his eyes once again getting darker while he moved the opening of the shirt to the sides so he could start kissing her stomach, paying special attention to her C-section scar before moving up until he reached her lips, once again passion growing between.

In a surprising move, once she hooked her leg around his hip, she moved them so he was now on the bottom, then she pulled back, giving him a smirk as she saw a surprise look on his face at first before he also smiled. After another soft kiss, Sara whispered against his lips that it was her turn to undress him, so she moved down his body, unbuckled his belt, unzipped his pants and took them off of him before moving back up his body while he was unbuttoning his shirt, but she shooed his hands away so she could do it, something she loved, which he just gave her another smirk while she took care of this special task, kissing her way down his torso as new skin was shown, and while he might not have that 'baseball' body he had in his last two years of high school, he still looked good in her eyes.

Eventually nothing was on them, the sheet was the only thing coving them and he was above her again, but before they moved towards that point of no return, he looked deep in her eyes and asked softly. "You really sure about this?"

Feeling every amazing feeling there ever was, which was nothing new when she was with him, especially when they were like this, she nodded with a smile as she cupped his cheek, her heart racing. "Yes."

With his heart picking up speed as well, he leaned down so they could kiss while moving forward with their passionate night, hoping it was their dream come true night.

Present

October 12, 2008

(1 week after saying goodbye to their daughter at the airport)

As Sara was waking up with a smile on her face, Grissom, who had been laying on his side watching her sleep, smiled. "Someone had a good dream."

Once she stretched and was fully awake, she nodded with a wider smile. "It was a wonderful dream/memory of the past."

He raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"

She took his free hand and placed it on her stomach so she could feel his fingers against her skin since her shirt had risen up during the night and she hadn't straightened it out.

"It was the night of your 30th birthday."

While he ran his thumb up and down her stomach, memories of that night came through his mind, causing him to smile wider as he looked at her with his eyes sparkling. "Oh yes, you're right, a very good memory, at least in the top 10 of overall good memories when you are in involved, possibly lower on the list if we put it in a different category."

She chuckled while he moved his head down so they could share a few soft kiss, then she moved to her side with his hand still on her stomach before he moved so her back was now against his bare chest and she was laying on his other arm, both wanting to spend a little more time just the two of them (with their unborn child of course) before they had to get up and face the day.

Flashback

September 13, 2000

Staying at home for their 1 year anniversary celebration dinner, Grissom had made a lasagna, but before he took it out of the oven, with the temperature now on warm, he started pouring them a glass of wine...well he got his poured at least, but as he was titling the bottle towards her glass, she placed her hand over it and shook her head. "I better not, babe."

He looked at her with a raised eyebrow. "And why is that?" When he saw her bite her lip as she looked down shyly, his breath hitched while his heart raced. "Sara, please tell me why."

Sara looked into his eyes a few seconds later, and with tears now in them, she whispered in return. "I think you know why."

He placed the wine bottle on the table, walked up to her chair, took her hand so he could help her stand up, then he cupped her cheek with strong emotions running through out his body, along with his racing heart. "Please say it."

She sniffled while she nodded. "According to three pregnancy tests I took earlier today, I'm pregnant."

His breath hitched again. "No."

She nodded again as she cupped his cheek. "Yes, we are having a baby. This is really happening, and this time it is for keeps."

Without another word, they kissed passionately, pouring every thing in it.

They slowed down a few moments later before he pulled back and kissed her on the forehead, then he kneeled down and placed his hand on her stomach and whispered. "Hi little one, I'm your daddy, and I already love you more than you can possibly understand." He moved his face closer and kissed her stomach before he laid the side of his head against it and closed his eyes, overcome with so much emotion, while she ran her fingers through his hair, sharing the same feeling.

A moment later, he pulled back and started to stand up, then took her hand and spoke while leading them towards the bedroom. "I hope you don't mind dinner being a little late tonight."

She smiled, knowing exactly what he had in mind, as she held his hand a little tighter while letting him lead her to their bedroom. "Not a bit."

He stopped them in the doorway and cupped her cheek again. "Good, because we got a little more to celebrate tonight."

She placed her hand on top of his as she whispered with love, passion and desire in her eyes. "That we do, Mr. Grissom."

They kissed again while moving their feet further into the room, closing the door behind them a second later.

Afterwards, and a little later that night, they were laying on their sides so they were facing one another with the sheet up to their waists while she was wearing one of his old UCLA t-shirts, but had raised the hem up so Grissom's hand was on her stomach, loving the feeling of his hand against her skin, especially in moments like this.

It was a few minutes of silence before he spoke with a determined look on his face. "This time it will be different."

Sara nodded as she placed her hand on top of his and slipped her fingers through them. "I know."

He shook his head and cleared his throat before looking into her eyes. "No, not just the outcome, but the in-between moments as well, I'm going to be here for you, more than I was the first time."

She squeezed his hand reassuringly as she spoke softly. "Hey, you were there for me when it mattered the most, we did the best we could while being in different states."

He cleared his throat again before he replied. "I would have, I would have dropped everything to be with you for every important moment, every doctor's appointment."

She nodded while squeezing her hand. "I don't doubt that for a single second, and this time you will be."

Now he sniffled as he moved closer to her and whispered. "You better believe it. I love you."

Right before their lips met, she whispered in return. "I love you too."

While they were in the middle of another passionate kiss, Grissom's stomach started to rumble, causing them to smile against one another's lips before they pulled back and started chuckling.

"I guess somebody is hungry."

He raised an eyebrow as he asked. "And you're not? Since you know you're starting to eat for two."

Right on cue her stomach started rumbling too, causing them to laugh before Sara smirked. "Now that you mentioned it."

After one more chuckle between the two, they got out of bed, put on their robes before walking out of the bedroom so they could finally enjoy their anniversary dinner, not that they were complaining about the delay, because like they said, they had a little more to celebrate tonight.
