Notes: Hello everyone! I'm Rachel, and this might be my first fanfic in over 12 years, so it's very likely I have a long journey of redesigning my writing style and story concept ahead. As the quarantine made its move on me, I rewatched the series and decided on writing something related to my all-time favorite anime.
The plot will subsequently follow the end of the series, with the main characters entering the scene as the story develops. I'm apologizing in advance for any lack of continuity, and I hope I won't miss any major points in the anime timeline. The POV might switch between my main OC and other anime/original characters, as I have only written the first two chapters at the moment. Any relevant changes will be mentioned in a notes section at the beginning of every chapter, so the story would be easier to follow. With all that being said, I hope you'll all enjoy my story!
DISCLAIMER : I don't own any characters / concepts of YYH, all rights belonging to Yoshihiro Togashi.
Chapter 1
For as long as I could remember, I only hated very few things in my life, as I always tried to see some sort of brightside in everything that occurred, like it all held some greater purpose. However, an alarm clock wouldn't make the cut and would quickly top that short list on my very first school day in Tokyo; I had to spend nearly 5 minutes trying to stop it from ringing. My uncle insisted on having one on my nightstand, adding that "A good morning starts with a little bit of music", which didn't quite resemble my idea of music (correction- it didn't resemble it at all). Somehow, I managed to turn it off without breaking it, which was my first accomplishment for the day.
I got up to glare at the neatly folded pink uniform waiting on my desk – it must have been the girliest thing I had to wear in the past few years. I snickered at my own thoughts, deciding that I no longer had the right to complain, even if I only did it in my head. I was lucky enough to be able to finish my studies in a highly praised school, along with the considerate care provided by my uncle, who was clearly more enthusiastic about the whole thing than I was. He even went all by himself to pick up my books (and that terrifying uniform), getting everything settled before I even arrived. Frankly, I couldn't be more grateful - so I quickly brushed off the idea as I started getting ready. 20 minutes later, I was running downstairs, holding a handful of books, in a helpless attempt to locate my other misplaced things. I was far from getting used to my new home, but that was clearly just a matter of time. As I was reaching for my newly-found bag across the hallway, I was startled by the most cheerful voice, coming right from the kitchen:
"You're finally up! I'm almost finished with the breakfast! You must be hungry, aren't you?"
Right. Uncle Yoshi was still at home, apparently making breakfast - for both of us. "This is something I'll have to get used to, too" , I thought to myself, pulling out the brightest smile I was capable of. I knew he was trying his best to make everything as comfortable as it could be, so the least I could do was to show some gratitude.
"Good morning! Yes, and this definitely smells amazing, thank you!", I replied, while my eyes wandered all over the room. "Uh…I was looking for my…"
"Class schedule? Right there on the counter", he pointed out, chuckling at my reaction. "It's your first day, after all. It's alright to feel a little lost!", he chirped while pouring some tea. "Don't worry, by tomorrow it will all seem easier!"
His liveliness was so refreshing, I couldn't help but smile. Although I didn't want to admit it, I was indeed a little bit anxious about all the changes coming in my life in such a short time, and he seemed to see right through it. He has been nothing but kind and patient in the past weeks, just like I imagined that my mother would have been - he was her brother after all. We had the same deep purple eyes, but only his were framed by tiny wrinkles, giving away his age. While looking at him, I felt some kind of relief, realising he was the closest thing I had to family, and he took on to that responsibility without even flinching. And there he was, bringing the plates, smiling kindly, and I mirrored his smile - I didn't want him to worry about anything.
"You must be right, uncle Yoshi!", I concluded, as I sat down and took a few bites of rice. "This tastes even better than it looks!", I cried out, gobbling like I've been starved for days. We kept on talking for a while about how great his cooking skills were, much to his delight, before I noticed the clock - it was still 7:30, but I thought about getting there early, so I could find my classroom in time; while others thought of it as a compulsive habit, I enjoyed having everything well-ordered, and knowing my surroundings was part of it. As a result, I finished my breakfast in a hurry and picked up my things, greeting my uncle as I rushed out the door – fortunately, he was thoughtful enough to point me the directions before I managed to take off like that, so the trip was way shorter than I expected it. Before I knew it, the tall building of Meiou High was only a few steps away, so I allowed myself to slow down and catch my breath. Some of the students I probably passed by while running were now giving me stares, almost like I had it written all over my face that I was the new student. To think of it, who the hell runs like crazy on their first day, unless they are completely clueless about their schedule? I sighed softly, brushing some white strands of hair off my forehead, and looked up to the gates. Behind them, amongst the fluttering pink uniforms and astounding buzz flooding the yard, I noticed a rather peculiar presence, as there was this girl who was staring straight in my direction. Her appearance was standing out, as she had long teal hair, tied in a high ponytail, with few messy strands framing her face. However, her light brown eyes where the ones to catch my attention, as she clouded them under a huge frown – maybe she was intending to scare someone off? It could totally work out. She was tapping her foot impatiently, with her arms crossed - she seemed pissed, and as soon as I started to walk, she started walking as well. I was right, she was actually staring - AT ME. She shortened the distance between us with only a few steps, only to start squeaking all of sudden:
" Where have you been? I've been waiting here for you for 20 minutes! That's a very rude thing to do on your first day, you know?"
I blinked twice in confusion – she was undoubtedly pissed. And quite straightforward. While she kept on weeping about me being late, I tried to remember if we ever met before, figuring that her approach didn't quite match the one of a stranger. Then it all clicked : she must have been my assigned guide for the day, as uncle Yoshi mentioned earlier. They seemingly had a great habit of making new students feel "very welcome".
"I'm sorry", I apologized, peeking at the others, as none of them seemed to be in a hurry at all. "I might have overestimated my running speed. I thought I would make it in time". She eventually stopped talking and sighed deeply, taking a piece of paper out of her bag and carefully checking it out.
"Well, technically, you did make it in time", she pondered, looking at her watch," but since it's your first day here, you have to take the quick tour before class. We should get going, or you'll really be late – actually, both of us will!"
Her voice became all cheerful, as she grabbed my hand and hurried in between the student crowds, dragging me after her without further ado. I quickly adjusted my pace to hers, so we were no longer running; even so, I barely caught a glimpse of the school entrance before she rushed me through it and to the stairs, explaining that I'll have plenty of time to wander off during lunchbreak. I raised my eyebrows in slight frustration, only to realise that she might as well be gone by next break, so I took her lead without complaining.
"So you must be my guide for today", I started, as we fled upstairs. "It's nice to meet you, I'm…"
"Amaya Nakamura, I know!" she interrupted, turning her head to face me. "I did my homework, and luckily for you, you'll have me around for a while, so you won't get lost. I'm Katsumi Oshima", she added, sticking out her tongue playfully.
Right. So long with me wandering off. She was a little shorter than me, but she definitely knew how to impose her presence - her voice turned a few heads around as she made her way through the long hallway; with her showing me the classrooms and giving in the details about every subject and teacher on my schedule, it turned out to be quite useful. As I found out moments later, she was also my classmate – meaning that I'd be stuck with her for longer than one day. It also turned out that we were about to start the day with a Math class, which seemed to be a great inconvenience for her.
"Luckily, we'll waste a few more minutes on your class introduction, so that should cut off some part of it", she stated cheerfully, taking a last turn on the left to reach our classroom. Some of our classmates were gathering around as well, so she found it the best moment to introduce me, much to my amusement. I smiled as I greeted each of them, knowing that I might just forget their names the second I'd set foot out of school. I was never the kind to have many friends around, but I didn't let any of it show - they were quite friendly and polite, and Katsumi took her role as a guide pretty seriously, so I had to give her that satisfaction. We were rather different from one another, but she seemed to be a nice person once she got in a better mood; it also seemed like there were good chances of us getting along after all, since there seemed to enjoy snarky remarks just as much as I did. She was passionately catching up with some of the girls, when she stopped abruptly and turned her head to the side, pitching her voice in an even higher tone.
"Good morning, Kaito-san!", she squealed, waving as a black-haired guy was approaching us. "How was your summer break?" Her face started to glow while she kept on talking to him; and there I was, having a hard time by trying not to laugh.
"Quite busy I might say", he replied smoothly, raising his glasses as he began telling her about writing some college essays and doing charity work in between travelling. He spoke with slight arrogance, almost as he was trying to impress my already-very-impressed guide; he went on with his speech for a while, with her nodding at each of his words, before he shifted his gaze towards me, suddenly acknowledging there was someone else listening to his bragging.
"Oh, I forgot my manners! You must excuse me!", he exclaimed rather formally, extending his hand for a handshake. "You must be our new classmate, aren't you? I'm Yu Kaito."
"I'm Amaya Nakamura, nice to meet you! You seemed like having a lot to catch up, so I didn't want to intrude", I taunted, extending my hand towards him as well. I barely noticed Katsumi blushing at my words, before the noise around us slowly faded, along with my vision becoming all blurry. I felt my palm itching, sending tiny shockwaves through my entire body; while my conscience was still intact, I could hear my own voice talking, as the gloomy feeling didn't seem to cease.
" What's with this Spirit Energy? What were the odds of having one of these people right here, at school? What if he catches up on my Demon Energy as well - maybe he already did. What in the world is going on? "
I was swimming into my own pool of questions for a while, and as I eventually started to come back to my senses, it looked like I kept shaking the guy's hand ever since.
"Er.., Nakamura-san, are you alright?", he asked perplexedly, while Katsumi was just as confused by my unexpected reaction. Or … maybe he didn't...yet , I reassured myself, as it seemed like I had no reason to worry about him just yet – I had other issues, such as an apparent lack of self-containment … and Katsumi's deadly stare.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm alright!", I chuckled rather nervously, abruptly removing my hand from his. "I guess my social skills are slightly outdated since this long summer break."
"Don't worry. It's your first day, you might as well be a little nervous", he replied plainly, nearly echoing my uncle's words, only to look past us as he saw someone coming our way - probably the teacher. I nodded to them while they sprinted inside, as I waited for the teacher to properly introduce myself. She briefly waved her hand in dismissal, as she proceeded to introduce me to my other classmates, and show me my desk - all in less than 5 minutes, much to Katsumi's disappointment.
As she went on with her teaching, I was quietly approaching my spot, only to be suddenly struck by another eerie feeling. It seemed to resemble the shockwaves I got while shaking Kaito's hand, but this time it didn't require any physical contact to awaken my senses. I picked up my pace to reach my desk, sighing in relief as I eventually sat down. I guess it took me a lot more than expected, since the teacher was giving me a wary look, without interrupting her lesson; I turned around to see Katsumi, who was resting her head on a very large book -she was on a complete break from reality, materialising her contempt over the subject, while constantly peeking to a certain spot to the front row of desks. That led me to believe it was where Kaito was seated, as I almost snorted thinking about her reaction back in the hallway; she seemed to have no slight intention of hiding her crush on him. While I was enjoying my own break from reality, my thoughts shifted back to that odd feeling, as it was coming back in another, more powerful wave.
" This might be the weirdest first day I could possibly think of. What's with all this energy around here? This one is certainly different from Kaito's - I could sense it ever since I walked in, but I can't even pick up its kind. Where is it coming from? "
I opened my book, trying to silence the maddening questions that my mind kept coming up with. That was not the time to lose my head, so I focused on combing through the lines of tilted heads instead, hoping to find any helpful sign – obviously, I wasn't expecting some sort of colored cloud floating around them, but it had to be at least something to draw my attention. While observing the ones in the front, I noticed that Kaito was slightly distracted from the lesson as well, glancing through the classroom before having a quick look in the back - he then faced the board all of sudden, almost as he gave himself away. He started to roll a pencil between his fingers, showing a certain change in his attitude, one that was opposed to the smug one he had earlier. It was like he hit some kind of switch when he looked back, and then, it suddenly made sense – I didn't need to know him to figure it was way too suspicious for him to act like that; he seemed smart enough to be able to conceal his emotions, unless he wanted them to be this loud and clear.
As I was about to find out, I had been looking in the wrong direction all along - the source of that intense energy was sitting right behind me, like a shining treasure, waiting to be uncovered under pink sand. When I slowly turned my head to the side, I immediately recognized the sign I was looking for – a pair of peering green eyes were looking like they were searching for something as well; and then, only for a few seconds, our eyes met, as I tried to find the slightest clue about them. Clearly, there was none - he was just as cautious as you would expect from someone holding that kind of power to be. His gaze was rather haunting, as it seemed it could pierce through you and contain your soul within its grasp. I shifted my sight back at the teacher, as this strange uneasiness took over my whole body. However, she seemingly finished her lesson as well, only to be followed by the sharp ringing that announced the end of the class. I was losing track of time. I barely got to blink a few times, attempting to clear my mind, when I found myself being dragged in the middle of the hallway with an incredible force – only to see it was Katsumi who pulled me out of my reverie. She had her face distorted into one weird, creepy grin, as she stared at me in utter silence -it almost looked like she was waiting to lure me into conversation by toying with my patience. And it was almost funny to me that she thought it could work like that.
" So…", she started, raising her eyebrows at my lack of reaction. My amusement quickly turned into confusion, as minutes passed by with us sitting there, both completely quiet. Her grin grew even wider, and her eyes sparkled with increasing curiosity - what was she trying to tell me? Or was she asking me …? Oh, wait…
"So…no, you don't need to worry. He's all yours. I don't take much interest into self-praising individuals", I taunted, figuring that she was waiting for my opinion over her black-haired nerd. Frankly, that was the last thing on my mind.
"Obviously you don't", she smirked, raising her eyebrows once again. "You aimed right at the top of the mountain, didn't you? That's quite ambitious - you're pretty brave for a newcomer. And I must admit that I'm impressed, and that doesn't usually happen."
Then she started laughing lightheartedly, with a passion I couldn't possibly expect from her - mostly because I had no idea about what she was laughing at. Obviously, I wasn't confused before. Or even if I were, it was nothing compared to what I was feeling at the moment. I couldn't even wrap my mind around it – I didn't even know what "it" was.
"Alright", I sighed, "Consider me defeated. What are you talking about?"
She kept on laughing, as she nodded towards the classroom door. Normally, I wouldn't have been so straightforward into following her direction, if for that one time when I seemed completely out of touch. As I managed to look back, I caught another glimpse of the enigmatic green-eyed guy - this time he didn't seem as wary as before, as he talked to some of our classmates. Fortunately, I had just enough time to turn around, only to be met by Katsumi's everlasting grin – which was now reaching both of her ears.
"Ok, so", I mumbled, playing with my hair. "What about him? Who is that guy?"
She narrowed her eyes in disbelief, almost like she thought I was playing dumb – and she was right to do so, as I was hoping to get some insight from her, instead of having her dig deeper into the matter. After all, there was only one thing I knew for sure – that his energy wasn't from this world.
" That", she answered mysteriously, "is the one bearing every girl's heart in this school in the palm of his hand. You can ask any of them; they will answer all the same – Shuichi Minamino"
Notes : Okay, this is my first chapter! I hope you guys enjoyed it, even if it's a little dull ( I guess most first chapters are). I thank you all in advance and I'm looking forward to reading your opinions! ^^
