Why
The soft buzzing sound startles Alex Karev out of a deep, peaceful slumber; his hand reaching out to pick up his cell phone from the side table next to him without stirring either of the twins asleep on his chest. "Alex Karev," he says in a tone that falls somewhere between groggy, restless and curious.
"Why?" came the sharp, feminine tone from Jo Wilson. Her tone also sounded…broken. Cracked, as if she were doing her best to hide the resolve to not break down in tears.
"Jo?"
"Of course it's me, you jerk. Now answer my question," she snaps in a sharp tone.
"I already told you why I left, what more do you want from me?" Alex whispers, his own voice cracking with emotion.
"I want to know why. I want to hear it from you in person. Preferably face to face but a phone call will have to suffice," Jo replies bluntly. Honestly she was tired of him dodging her phone calls and text messages, especially now that she might be pregnant with his baby as well.
"Jo…all you need to know is that I love you but I was never actually in love with you," Alex replies, doing his best to hold in his own emotions.
"Okay." Although Jo isn't satisfied with that answer, she knows that whatever she & Alex had is over and it was for the best.
Author's Note: I wrote this on a whim after learning that Justin Chambers – aka Alex – had left the show after so many seasons, but also because I think that Jo deserved a better explanation than through a letter.
