The dark blue sky shone brightly above the heads, as a black and white she-cat stared down at the pool sitting gat her paws. The waters distorted with the image of a blood soaked clearing, her shoulders slumping as her eyes darkened. Ears flat against the sides of her head as she hummed a lullaby to herself.

As she turned away with a sigh she passed a reddish brown tom, her muzzle burying into his shoulder before she pressed forward.

"I told you that giving that power to a medicine cat was a bad idea, Shatteredlake." The tom meowed, his gaze turning down to the pool. "If she had the proper training in combat perhaps things could have been different."

Shatteredlake sighed. "That isn't the only reason that they failed, they are still missing the last link!"

"And yet they keep their maw closed as to where it was, how are we going to save the clans at this pace? We need to fix those chances, and if you won't take action… then I will take it from here"

Shatteredlake turned and looked back at him. "We are to never meddle too far in the world of the living, that is the pledge that we took remember, Redwind?"

"And yet by giving those powers to Shred, giving powers to me and that… medicine cat isn't meddling?"

Shatteredlake brushed it off, but her ears perked as a whisper carried over to her. Redwind too responded to its call as their attention was drawn to a pit not far from there. "He's trying it again."

"They will keep him from leaving that land, his master is the only one who could free him." Shatteredlake answered.

"He's not trying to get free; you and I both know this."

Shatteredlake sighed as she pressed further away. "The rot will keep him contained, and I will not be fooled again."

The reddish brown tom nudged her side. "I know you won't, but we need to better contain him… if he gets the chance."

"There will be no chance, he longs for power like the rest of the lot… nothing more."

Redwind looked over his shoulder. "Is power really that he seeks though, his tone always seems to say otherwise."

"You're acting as if anyone cannot have their own feelings, as if they all must obey and follow your whim… you sound like him."

Redwind slumped his shoulders shoulders slumped as he turned his back to her. "I didn't mean it like that, just that we shouldn't just brush this off… his desires will push him over the edge one of these days. He hasn't attempted to leave yet but he could try in the near future, and when he does you…."

"We'll be fine, I promise you."

Redwind nodded. "Promise..."

Maplestar looked among the remaining cats down in the small clearing below, many of whom barely made it out of there alive and were being treated by the medicine cats. Turning her gaze as she smelled Molestar take a seat down beside her.

"So many survived… but not everyone made it out."

Maplestar nodded her head as she closed her eyes, turning back the clans. "We are homeless now… but we must keep strong, starclan will-

"StarClan!" spat Molestar, "They have forsaken us! Kept the truth hidden from our eyes, if we had more time to prepare none of this would have happened."

Maplestar held her head up high. "Fate has a strange relationship with StarClan, sometimes it is not by choice that they can't share everything." She meowed.

Molestar flicked her long tail with frustration. "Sometimes telling us would be better, who will be here if we were all destroyed in that battle?"

Maplestar rested her tail on the large she-cat's shoulders, hushing quietly as she pressed closer. "It would have never led to that; many cats were leaving before the retreat was called." She answered, before she looked over as cats were approaching. "And behold the future of our clans still live… we will find a new home, I promise you that."

"Promises and empty foresight, you already sound like our ancestors."

Maplestar watched the she-cat descend down into the group, before the large MoutainClan cat turned to look over her shoulder. "You and your clan can choose your side of the clearing, until we are safe it is better to stay closer to each other… I suppose."

Maplestar nodded as Molestar guided the elders to a safe corner of the clearing, as she was left on the tree root looking over everyone.

Her eyes drawn to the bleeding golden pelt of her deputy, as her two medicine cats attended to the wounds. Her eyes were drawn to the apprentice however, as something whispered into her ears.
