Chapter 1: This Bites
Sam grumbled as he slung on his jacked and plodded across town to school. Port Silas, Maine was not his ideal choice for where he wanted to be in the dead-ass-middle of winter. It was miserable, cloudy weather-just like it had been for the previous two weeks the Winchesters had been hunting down the vampire who'd been biting some of the local teens at a make-out point north of town. So far there'd been three victims-all boys around Sam's age. John was posing as a substitute teacher in the school, and Dean was busy trying to track down if it was a single vamp or a group, hiking around the outskirts of the fishing village to see potential lairs for the blood-suckers. Sam was told to go to school and see if any of the students were acting strange, though to be honest it was hard to tell.
Port Silas was easily the most dreary and depressing slice of New England Sam had ever had the misfortune of being dragged to. The miniscule high school had just under 200 students in its four grades and it was clear that this was the result of the town beginning the slow and painful death that was inevitable for any town like it. The cannery had closed and most of the fisherman had left for larger cities further down the coast, the once proud brick school was now laden with chipped paint and empty classrooms. As a result it was hard to pick out any student as abnormal, as they all basically functioned in the same malaise and depression that came with the knowledge that your life is effectively over before it's even begun.
Sam sat down in the hard wooden chair for his math class. The room was on the second floor and felt like it was barely warmer than the frigid winter outside. Honors Pre-Calculus wasn't a particularly full class. In fact there were only seven other students in the room designed for thirty. As Mr. Burton sighed and began the process of copying from the book to explain derivatives Sam felt a poke in the back of his neck. He turned slightly to see Laura Dillon poking him.
"Hey, do you have the notes from yesterday?"
"Yeah." Sam blushed slightly, quickly coughing and turning away to hide his face.
"Can I borrow them? I had to go to the doctor's and missed the start of the chapter."
"Sure." Sam pulled the pages out of his binder and handed them to her, still looking away.
"Thanks. I'll give these back by the end of class. At the pace he teaches I usually finish the exercises with plenty of time left over." She smiled, stifling a laugh.
"Yeah. I get that it might be hard for some people but it seems ridiculous to give us ten minutes for six problems." Sam whispered, still copying down the current example.
Twenty minutes later she handed back the notes as the two filed out of the room, the final bell going off. As she was turning toward her locker Sam swallowed and clenched his hands as he quickly spoke, knowing he had to act before he lost his nerve.
"Hey, Laura?"
"Yeah Sam?" She smiled, turning around.
"I… um…" Sam blushed as he steeled himself, come on Winchester you pussy! "I think you're really smart and funny and you're also cute and I was wondering if you maybe wanted to go out?" He nearly blurted.
She smiled, "Sure."
"Awesome!" He nearly shouted.
"Could you do tonight?" She adjusted her books.
Sam hesitantly glanced toward the science room where he knew his father was cleaning up. Fridays were when he and Dean had to study lore. But maybe… "Sure. But I might be a little late. Can I meet you around, maybe eight?"
"Sure. I'll see you at eight by the park on Chestnut."
"Awesome."

Sam had managed to sneak out; waiting until Dean inevitably started to doze off, bored of all the reading and tired from his hiking. John was busy checking Dean's potential locations, which meant all he had to do was jimmy the bathroom screen off and he was able to sneak out. He got to Liberty Park shortly before eight and waited. Laura showed up shortly afterward.
"So what do you wanna do? Maybe we could catch a movie?" Sam asked, having mentally calculated how much he could afford to spend on each of them for that evening.
"I was thinking we could just walk around a bit. The Aztec's a bit of a hole, and honestly the popcorn is way too stale for my tastes." She countered.
"Okay." Sam nodded, following as she led from the park toward the outskirts of town. After about ten minutes the two were at the edge, with only the path up to Lover's Peak in front of them.
"I don't think we should go up there. Didn't you hear about the dead guys they found up there?" Sam asked, nervous that he might have to defend his date from a vampire.
"Yeah, but those guys were on their own. Plenty of couples have been up there and they were all fine. Besides, it's supposed to be a nice night. We're almost at the full moon." She stuck out her hand.
"Okay… But we need to be careful. If we hear or see anything weird we turn back." Sam stated, God please don't ruin my first kiss with some stupid vampire trying to munch on my date…
It was a short stroll up the path to a large flat area that overlooked the town. There were a handful of picnic benches that overlooked the railing and a quiet forest behind them that steeply inclined away from the town. It was actually pretty nice, for a place that had recently sported three homicides. Laura sat down on an empty picnic table and motioned for Sam to sit beside her. He obliged and before he knew it she had him pinned against the bench as the two were making out.
Holy shit! Sam closed his eyes for a moment as she kissed him and started to gently move her hand down his chest. It soon reached a bit lower and Sam's eyes jerked back open. Before he could respond he heard a rustling in the woods not too far away.
He nearly had to contort himself out of her grasp in order to speak, "Laura did you hear that?"
She rolled her eyes, "Hear what?"
"There was something in the woods."
"Yeah, it's called wildlife." She shoved him back into position and began kissing him on his cheek, working toward his neck.
"I'm just saying…" Sam bucked as her hand again caressed against his jeans.
"Shut up Sam." She smiled as she bit down on his neck for a hickey. Sam felt the slight tingling and realized the bruise he would have in the morning would surely be a red flag for his father.
"No, no biting. I had to sneak out and my dad would kill me if he found out I was up here." Sam gasped.
"Sorry. It's kinda my thing." She grabbed his wrists and pushed them hard against the bench as she descended a set of fangs. She lunged forward and bit into the same place as the hickey as Sam screamed and thrashed. He managed to knee her off of him and kick her away tumbling onto the ground before he rolled to sit upright. She grabbed at him to try and pin him again but he successfully dodged, then pulling out the knife he had strapped to his thigh (I guess dad's paranoia pays off every once in a while) he managed a quick slit across her neck which he soon turned into a full decapitation.
Sam dropped the knife as he realized he killed the first girl he ever made out with. Laura, a vampire, would be the first girl he ever kissed. As he exhaled, winded from the quick fight he quickly checked himself for injuries, knowing that if he ignored it there was a good chance he'd end up with another infection and be stuck on the same awful tasting antibiotics. Everything was fine up until he felt the left side of his neck. There was blood oozing out of the surface. No. No. No, no, no. He quickly held up the knife's reflective edge and saw in the darkness that the hickey had become a not so modest bite. I was bit. Oh God. No. No, no, no, no, no! Sam knelt down and tried to steady his rapidly increasing breathing.
Maybe it's just a surface bite from the hickey. One of Dean's exes left a pretty nasty one… Sam knew he was grasping at straws, but at the moment he needed to calm down and think. Before anything I need to get this cleaned up. He quickly dragged her body into the woods bordering the point and ran down the hill to a gas station. Thankfully the owners didn't bother locking the bathrooms, so Sam ducked into the men's room out back. After fumbling for the switch and realizing why they hadn't locked the bathroom (well this is disgusting…), he stepped around a conspicuous stain to look in the single mirror on the wall. The bleeding has mostly stopped and that the bite only looks like a bad hickey, though the edges were much darker than they should have been. Fuck. Sam rustled in his coat pocket and pulled out a scarf-a horrible mess Dean had made for him the previous year for Christmas. While made correctly it intentionally sported all of Sam's least favorite colors. He quickly covered his neck with the scarf and left the bathroom to use the payphone he'd seen on the side of the gas station.
Come on… pick up… "Hello?" It was Dean, clearly recently awoken by the ringing phone.
"Hey Dean, it's me."
"Sammy? Wait, did you sneak out?!" Dean was practically beaming over the phone.
"Yeah. Look-"
"Oh my God, don't tell me you're on a date and you need a ride home." Dean chuckled.
"No, look-"
"Little Sammy's got a girlfriend! Is she hot?" Dean's smugness oozed through the phone.
Sam exhaled at his less-than-flattering nickname suddenly gaining an extra degree of embarrassment, "Dean I killed the vamp and I need help with the body!" Sam irritably shouted, before quickly checking if there was anyone nearby who'd heard him.
Dean was silent for a minute before he responded. "Jesus, I didn't think you had it in you to take one on solo. What are you, nuts?"
"Look, just meet me up at Lover's Point. And since I assume he's just walked in the door-"Sam heard the click of the motel door, "-bring dad."

"Son, while I admire your handiwork, especially considering her catching you off guard, I can't say I'm thrilled about you sneaking out." John said, lighting the body aflame.
"Believe me; I don't think I'm going to do that again anytime soon." Sam rubbed his neck for a half second before quickly dropping his hand.
"I'm proud of you for finishing the job on your own, but for sneaking out you owe me thirty extra laps tomorrow morning." John turned and started walking toward the motel, Sam and Dean following closely behind.
"Yes, sir."
"Good."
It was shortly after midnight when the three returned to their rooms, John making sure the boys were both in theirs before he went into his own. Dean immediately collapsed on his bed, while Sam carefully undressed and saw that the bite mark was already fading.
