The Song of Betrayal
Disclaimer:
I am not Kripke. Rest assured, I do not own Supernatural, much less make money out of it. I write fanfiction for the sake of writing and because it is fun.
That being said, this is the second installment of the Betrayal series and is definitely AU. Enjoy.
Chapter 1: Pride
"So are you saying that by killing Lilith we released Lucifer from his prison, because apparently, he's real too?" Dean asked flabbergasted.
"Yes." Castiel answered.
"And that's not all, is it?" John asked the angel with a shrewd light in his eyes.
"No. Angels need vessels to walk on Earth. I am currently using James Novac's body as a vessel. He's merely asleep at the moment. Dean is the Michael sword, the true vessel of Michael, although I believe even you can act as his vessel, John Winchester. After all, it's all about genetics."
"Wait does that mean Lucifer needs a vessel too? Isn't he supposed to be an angel as well?" Bobby asked.
"Archangel," Castiel corrected. "He was Heaven's Lieutenant and one of the four princes of Heaven or at least, he was, till his rebellion."
"So if we take out Lucifer's true vessel, we can stop the apocalypse, yes?" John asked.
"No. Lucifer will just take another vessel. Only a true vessel can hold the Archangels without burning out. But it is possible to strengthen a vessel by drinking Demon blood. Once the vessel burns out, he'll have to take another one. But it will considerably limit his power."
"Do you know who the Devil's vessel is?" Bobby asked.
"There are two he can use. A father and a son. As I said, vessels are a matter of Genetics. My superiors believe that Lucifer will go after the son though."
"Why?"
"The child is seven years old. Seven is the Biblical age of consent. The father I believe is a bit younger than Dean, by three or four years, I suppose. He is a psychic, with an innate ability to tell apart truths from lies. It will be difficult to trick the elder Black into giving consent, especially considering that he has a son to look after. Besides, it is easier to trick a child than an adult."
"Wait a second! Black? As in Samuel Black, as in the Black Mamba?" Bobby asked.
"Yes. I don't know why he is called the Black Mamba though."
"I thought Kobe was the Black Mamba?" Dean asked, surprised.
"Same name, different courts."
"What? Try to make sense, won't you Bobby?" John said irritability.
"Kobe is a basketball player. Samuel is a lawyer. The kid was asked to defend a guy who was definitely guilty. Apparently someone wanted to kick him out of the firm or something. Told him if he didn't win, he won't continue there. It was his first proper case too. It was a clear cut case. The defendant was clearly guilty. But the kid went and tore down the prosecution and the defendant came out smelling like daisies. Then he resigned from the firm, took a case for the prosecution and put his former client in prison for twenty-five years for Jaywalking."
Dean choked on his drink and sputtered. "Twenty five for Jaywalking? Are you for real?"
"The kid's that good. The cops love him because if the guy he is defending is guilty, he'll win the case but will still somehow put the guy in prison. If the defendant is innocent, he'll solve the case in court and still make sure that the cops don't get blamed if it was an honest mistake. Some idjit cop took money and tried to frame someone else for murder. The poor bastard is in prison with a fifty year sentence and his pension was suspended. He hasn't lost a single case in his entire career. Him being a psychic actually explains a lot."
"And why does this matter? We ought to go and kill the kid before Lucifer gets a chance to bring about the apocalypse." John said offhandedly.
"It was you bozos that let him loose and you want to make a seven year old pay for your mistakes?!" Bobby asked, enraged.
"I don't like it either. But I don't want the world to end because I was too squeamish to kill a child." John answered resolutely.
"Who died and made you God, John? You know what? Get out of my house. Dean, you're free to show up whenever you want, provided you don't think killing seven year olds for your sins is the right way to go. Speaking of seven year olds, I'm going to warn Black that some idjits are gunning for his son. Let's see how you are going to kill the kid then, shall we?"
John stood up from his seat and scoffed at Bobby "As if he's going to believe you. Tell him that and the guy will most probably admit you to a mental asylum."
"Psychic, remember? I think I'll be able to convince the guy."
"Do as you please. Let's go, Dean."
Dean looked torn between wanting to stay and follow, but then years of training kicked in and he left with John.
Castiel ran a shrewd eye over Bobby and the grizzled hunter raised an eyebrow at him.
"You are aware of the truth. Yet you did not reveal it. Why?"
"Why didn't you? I was just following your lead." Bobby countered.
Castiel hummed a little and then answered "I don't really like those two. John more than Dean, though. Dean is too much of a follower while John is too self-righteous." He gave a fake shudder. "Even angels make mistakes, you know? I am one of the youngest angels in Heaven, yet even I pre-date humanity. John isn't even a century old, yet he believes that he knows what is the best for all. I am looking forward to his fall."
"Fall?"
"Oh, did I get the saying wrong?"
"Which one?"
"Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall."
A/N:
As I mentioned earlier, this is the second installment of the Betrayal Series. I changed my mind about it being a one-shot, though. I find it infinitely easier to write small 1k chapters than to write 7k one-shots. I had also wanted to know who you thought Gabriel's new vessel would be in the first installment but at the same time I wanted to attempt writing a one-shot as well. I admit I had to cut out a lot of scenes from it because I found it exhausting to write something that long despite the fact it was smaller than my previous works and I had taken much longer time than I usually did. I lost a lot of time reading and re-reading that work every time I started writing. I have learned from my mistakes. Never again shall I attempt to write a one-shot longer than a thousand words.
If you wish to read the first installment and haven't done so, please visit my profile page or search for The Symphony of Betrayal. Speaking of which, should I re-write that installment and publish it separately or just take it down completely and post the newer version again. I won't do so until I'm finished with this one though. Do let me know what you think about it.
That aside, let me know your opinions about this work as well. Feel free to send me suggestions, opinions, criticism and corrections.
That being said, please fav, follow and review.
Oh, and the quotation in bold is from the Book of Proverbs from the Bible.
