Mako Mermaids an HBO presentation Season One, Introduction
Disclaimer: I do not own Mako Mermaids, or any of its properties.
Hello dear readers, for some of you (especially those who've asked) this story will be familiar, for others it will be brand new. Let me explain a few things before you get started….
The origins of this story started when "Mako: Island of Secrets" premiered on Netflix in July of 2013, I binged watched the first 13 episodes, and then binged watch the last 13 episodes when Netflix released them in September of 2013. Being fascinated with Atlantis, the paranormal, cryptozoology, and weird things in general, "Mako" hit all the buttons; it had mermaids, mermen, a magic trident and hints of Greco-Roman mythology which I love.
When I first started thinking about writing a fanfic based on "Mako", I was also watching "Game of Thrones", "Vikings" and "Spartacus" and hosting weekend D&D games where I served as the DM. Together they formed the idea of how a more mature/adult versions of "Mako" with a "Game of Thrones Under The Sea" vibe could look like with a bigger budget and on a network like HBO. So, this story was born, and using my knowledge of history and mythology the paranormal, I sat down and started typing.
The first chapter was posted to Fanfic in November 2013, and the last posted in Feb 2015, right before S2 of "Mako" aired (I remember taking half a day off work, and drinking several pots of coffee just to get it finished before "Season 2" started). The whole story ended up being 34 chapters and about a year and a half to write, so in a nutshell this story is almost seven years old.
When I began writing my HBO version of "Mako" the second season of the real show it was based on wasn't in production and had only been hinted at. By the time S2 had officially been announced it was too late for me to go back and start retro-writing to add plot elements of S2, I did however utilize some of the rumors swirling around social media platforms at the time. The one thing that I did know was that Lucy Fry and Ivy Latimer (Lyla and Nixie) would not be returning (as of 2020 the never have). I also have to admit that half the rumors swirling about S2 turned out to be false once it actually aired in Feb 2015. But while writing I took the rumors I had heard and tossed a few of them into the story.
In 2017, my life hit one of those rough patches we all hate; deaths in the family, job cuts, car engines needing replaced, all the things in reality we wish to avoid, but never truly can. I took everything down that year with the plan to re-write it since all seasons of the show had aired, and I needed to correct some things. So now, almost three years later, I'm reposting the re-edit of the chapters. For those who read the original story, there have been a few changes, but the bulk of the writing and the expanded mythology I created remains in place.
BUT before you start reading, I'm going issue a warning. Everything in this story is basically ALTERNATE UNIVERSE, spun out of my overly active imagination; it has never been my intent to duplicate the TV show, or write a fluffy bunny story…
After all this is HBO... Enjoy.
