Chapter 1 – That Kid No One Knows About
A.N. ***IMPORTANT***
Before reading, I strongly urge you to have read/to read the Percy Jackson series, the Heroes of Olympus series and the Stormlight archive. You have been warned. Major spoilers ahead(Probably).
On a less important note, while this essentially not my first fic, it is my first in over a year, and if you have come from reading my old one, I'm sorry I didn't do more, but I was vastly underprepared, if there's enough support then I'll re-plan, re-write, re-post and finish it, but I doubt it'll come to that.
Also, you may notice that some things from both series have been conveniently left out or added, this happens if I want the story to work, get over it.
Anyway, I've learnt from my mistakes and hopefully I will actually finish this one. I cannot promise regular uploads, what with school being such a pain at the moment, but I will try to keep a chapter ahead all the time so I can post if I am really far behind. Anyway, on to the story, hope you enjoy!
Also, afterthought, should I write in first or third person, I can do either and there are benefits to both. First chapters in third, but if you think I should write in first tell me and if it gets majority I'll change.
….
Percy hated maths. It was. The most. Boring. Subject. Whoever decided that kids were having too much fun in school and that they had to add maths in deserved the depths of Tartarus. And that isn't something to wish upon anyone.
He sighed, looking yet again over to the clock laughing at him from the wall. Two minutes 30 seconds… two minutes 20 seconds… The teacher would let them out early right?… two minutes 10 seconds… should he ask to go to the toilet and get out early… two minutes… but he'd done that the last few lessons, the teacher would get suspicious… one minute 50 seconds… Percy put his head in his hands and leant on his desk, there wasn't even any point trying to participate in the lesson, the teacher stumbled over all her words and his dyslexia stopped him from reading the board, for the most part.
After the minute stretched into 100 and back, the bell finally went, and he could walk, with most of his brain cells intact, out the door. He followed the swarm as it made it's way outside.
Percy walked round the back of the building to the teachers parking lot to wait for Paul, his step-father, also a teacher at Goode High. Usually this involved going back into the building for an hour or so while Paul finished up, but on some lucky days he managed to finish early.
He rounded the corner to find Paul waiting for him. Percy raised an eyebrow, normally even on good days he had to wait 10 to 20 minutes just for Paul to say goodbye to his colleagues.
"Free lesson last thing." Paul said, by way of explanation. Percy just nodded and got in the car. "There's a new kid coming in in your year tomorrow, I think he might be… you know..." Percy nodded. A demigod.
"What makes you think that?" Percy asked.
"He just has that kinda story, and I know it could happen to anyone, but he has no parents that anyone knows of, he's jumpy and a natural fighter."
"I'll keep an eye on him." Paul smiled gratefully and they spent the rest of the journey in near silence, listening to the radio. Both were quite tired from the exhausting year so far, which, while nothing in particular had happened, had been unreasonable stressful.
Walking in the house and hearing a bright, cheery, "You're back!" made them visibly relax. Sally had that affect on people. Coming close to the end of her first novel, she was a born writer, and liked to sometimes read chapters to them after dinner. Percy smiled,
"What's for dinner mum?" He asked. She grinned mysteriously and hugged him, planting a quick kiss on Paul's cheek as he hung up his coat. She scurried off as they came further into the inviting warmth of the house.
As they sat down to a dinner of a Sunday roast with all the trimmings (on a Thursday no less), Paul and Percy recounted their equally boring days. The evening past pleasantly, but too quickly, and darkness came with a full embrace. Percy excused himself and left for bed, acknowledging the frustrating closeness of the summer break as he passed the calendar. He undressed and climbed into bed, allowing the night to pass swiftly, and blissfully absent of dreams.
The morning came in all its golden pain, and Percy groaned curses at Apollo as he forced himself awake. He showered and swiftly dressed before half falling down the stairs in an effort to get to his blue breakfast, whatever it may be (pancakes for those wondering). He haphazardly packed for school, all the while glaring at Paul, who enjoying himself having gotten up and hour prior. A cursed morning person.
Percy snoozed on the trip to school, and when they got there practically fell out the car.
"Remember to keep an eye on that new kid today, alright Percy?"
"Wassis name?" Percy asked
"I don't know, but he should be in some of your classes."
"Alright." Percy stumbled around the school until he finally happened upon his classroom, again maths. Apparently no one was new here, so the lesson passed almost without incident, the only incident being that Percy drifted off, which wouldn't have been so bad if he hadn't been rudely awoken by a not-so-happy teacher.
His next lesson was English still boring, but at least almost understandable. Turns out, there was a new kid in this class, and yes, he seemed like a demigod. He was jumpy and couldn't stay still; he seemed intelligent and looked like he could read the board easily, but some demigods could. He also didn't seem to care much if he got in trouble, he'd look around, surprised, when the teacher started having a go at him. Not that that was a trait of demigods of course, it was just an interesting thing about this kid.
Percy looked over to the enormous kid at the back of the class, who was of course a monster. Percy had been watching him for a while now, and vice versa. The monster seemed oblivious to the new kid, but the Percy's smell might be smothering the smell of any other demigod in the room. The monster, a rogue laestrygonian Percy thought, was staring right at him. Nothing unusual.
While most of the more powerful monsters had been destroyed in the two recent wars against Gaia and Kronos (individually), some had escaped and had to be hunted down one by one. Soon, hopefully, the only threats to any demigods in the country would be minor monsters, and so losses would be fewer. Thankfully, stronger monsters took longer to reform and escape Tartarus, so demigods could have a few decades of relative peace.
The lesson blissfully ended and break swooped in. Percy almost stalked the new kid, but in reality he just followed. Very different…
Percy put on a smile and walked up to the boy.
"Hey" He said.
"Alright?" Was the reply. Percy frowned.
"I'm fine thanks. What's your name?" The boy smiled, it looked quite good on him.
"Kavash," He said with a smile, "but you can call me Kash." Again, Percy was struck by how strange his accent was, and how foreign his name sounded.
"Where are you from?" He asked, perhaps slightly too directly considering they'd just met.
"Ah," Sighed the boy, "You wouldn't believe me." Percy smiled.
"Try me."
"I come from Alethkar, not that I remember much from my home, or really any of my past, but sometimes I remember some small details."
"You're right, I have not heard of it," Said Percy, "but perhaps you could tell me about it." Kash nodded.
"Happily." He said. Percy nodded in victory, and set a time and place, before moving off towards his friends.
During his next lesson, Percy was struck by a longing for Camp Half-blood, and his friends there. Though in all honestly, a large portion of that came from missing Annabeth. They'd called a few times over the year, in obscure locations and heavily armed, but it wasn't the same in any way. Maybe he should feel bad about wishing to be away from home, but while his mum and Paul were great, there wasn't the same freedom. He couldn't train, or spend time with any friends, he was pretty much house-bound. He usually got up early in the morning to do an exercise routine to keep his fitness up, but motivation was hard to come by, so it often didn't get done.
The day passed slowly, the hours lingering, but eventually he could finally leave and go home so that he could repeat it tomorrow.
And that's how he eventually found himself waiting for Kash in some small cafe. Today was the real test, monsters were plentiful in this area of the city, so Percy would just have to see if Kash got attacked on the way.
It seemed like a dangerous test, but Percy would be watching from far enough away that monsters close to Kash wouldn't come after him, but that he could help should a fight begin. He was increasingly sure that Kash was half-blood now, he didn't know his father, and the laestrygonian had started to look at him funny.
Percy looked out the window and saw Kash walking down the long street, there were plenty of quiet spots for him to be attacked in. There was a chance of course that he was half-blood and wouldn't be attacked, but Percy would just have to keep meeting him here for a few days to be sure.
Kash walked down the entire street without incident. It would seem they were coming back tomorrow.
Kash entered the cafe and sat at his table.
"Hey," He said. "You'll never believe what I just saw."
"What?" Percy replied.
"Someone with one big eye instead of two!"
A/N (Again)… sorry, one last thing, while writing this chapter my brain apparently really wanted to write in first person, I quickly changed some stuff to remedy that, but some of it still sounds like its in first, even if it isn't.
