A/N: I am a sci-fi nerd and I've been rewatching Start Trek Voyager. Harry Kim is a cinnamon roll and he deserved better. That's all.
Chapter 1
"Doctor to the bridge, intruder alert!" The message sounded on the bridge loudly and Chakotay and Janeway exchanged a look.
"Tuvok, Harry," Janeway ordered, standing. The two she had gestured at followed as she swept off the bridge.
"Where could an intruder have even come from? There's no one around for light years," Harry mused. Janeway's eyes narrowed.
"I don't know, but I intend to find out," she declared.
As soon as the three set foot in sickbay, they were stunned into silence. There, huddling in the corner, was a seemingly human girl of no more than eighteen years. Her short blonde hair was messy and her blue eyes were wide with fear. She was huddled in a fluffy white bathrobe, clutching it around her as she fought not to hyperventilate.
"Doctor?" Janeway asked, raising an eyebrow. The girl's eyes flicked back and forth from the Doctor to Janeway and back again.
"I don't know, Captain! I was just going about my daily routine and she appeared as if transported on one of the bio beds!" the Doctor exclaimed. He was standing a little ways away from the girl, a phaser aimed at her.
"Who are you?" Janeway asked the girl. The girl's eyes widened and she shook her head frantically.
"Hey, it's okay. We're not going to hurt you," Harry comforted, taking a step towards her. The girl tilted her head studying Harry skeptically, then looking pointedly at the phaser the Doctor held and back to Harry. Harry chuckled.
"Ok, you've got me there. But the Doc here wouldn't actually hurt you. None of us would. You just surprised us, that's all," Harry said in a soothing voice. The girl blinked rapidly, then her eyes fluttered closed and she sighed heavily. She threw her head back against the wall and took some deep, soothing breaths. When she opened her eyes again she seemed to have calmed considerably, and she was studying Harry consideringly.
"Harry?" Janeway asked, unsure but having recognized that Harry was the only one so far that seemed to have any sort of positive effect on the girl. The girl's eyes flicked to Janeway, narrowing, and she huffed unhappily.
"Captain, if the rest of you leave I think she might talk to me," Harry suggested, studying the girl's face for some sign of assent or dissent. She nodded so slightly at him that Harry wasn't sure if he'd imagined it.
"I am not sure if that would be wise," Tuvok stated. The girl's eyes turned to him, studied him, and then widened in fear once again as she noted the unconcealed phaser he carried.
"Captain, please?" Harry asked. Janeway considered for a moment then nodded decisively.
"Alright. Tuvok, Doctor, let's go. Harry, be careful. We'll be right outside if you need us," the Captain asserted, unhappily. The Doctor grabbed his mobile emitter and followed Janeway and Tuvok out of sickbay. Once they were gone, the girl visibly relaxed and turned questioning eyes on Harry. Harry sat on the floor, where he was, so he was at eye level with the girl.
"I'm Harry. You wanna tell me your name?" Harry asked, gently. The girl opened her mouth, closed it again, did that a few times, then closed her mouth. Her face was both perplexed and annoyed and she huffed again, blowing a piece of hair out of her face. Then she looked to Harry, smiled slightly, and shrugged.
"Can you not talk? Are you okay?" he asked, concerned. The girl sighed, then looked around, consideringly. When she seemed not to find what she was looking for, she turned back to Harry, eyes helpless. She mimed writing on a pad of paper. Harry studied the gesture for a moment then, understanding that for some reason this girl couldn't or wouldn't talk, stood and quickly located a datapad. He opened it to the simplest function, a keyboard and a display space. He started to approach the still sitting girl, but stopped when she flinched back.
"Hey. It's okay. I'm not gonna hurt you. I just wanted to give you this. You can write on it," Harry soothed. The girl looked him over again then sighed, nodded, and gestured for him to come on. Harry walked over to her slowly, handed her the pad, and sat down next to her, leaving a large space gap between them. The girl tapped on the pad for a moment, then handed it to Harry.
My name is Cassandra. Cassie. My throat is swollen right now from being intubated. Still can't talk. It's driving me crazy. I'm usually a very talkative person.
"Well, Cassie, it's nice to meet you. And intubated? What's that mean? Also, it sucks about not being able to talk." Cassie took the pad back and began typing again.
I would say nice to meet you too, but I'm not really sure where I am or how I got here. And you know? Intubation? It's where they put a plastic tube down your throat into your airway and in your lungs. So you can breathe. Or for general anesthesia.
"That sounds...unpleasant. I bet the Doc would know what you're talking about. He could probably fix your throat too, if you'd let him. And what do you mean you don't know how you got here?"
First of all, you're lucky I'm a fast typer. You gotta start talking in fewer sentences though, Harry, this much typing is getting annoying. As for the Doc, and those others that were in here, the Captain and the surly one with the weird futuristic alien gun like the Doc had, they were bad vibes. I don't trust them. And I mean I don't know how I got here. One minute I was going to sleep in my own bed, I had just gotten home from the hospital, and when I woke up I was here. Where is here, by the way?
"Bad vibes?" Harry asked, confused, raising an eyebrow. Cassie gave him an incredulous look.
You know. Vibes. Like...I don't know how to explain this. It's like how they present and what that presentation conveys. The Doc was afraid of me, he held a weapon (or I think it was a weapon) on me. So bad vibes. The Captain, I think is what you called her, was tense and her face was angry. Her hand kept twitching at her side, like she was wishing for a weapon, and she stared at me for way too long. Hence, bad vibes. The big surly dude's facial expression was just downright unsettling, and the fact that he did have a weapon in his hand was intimidating. Hence, bad vibes.
"What about me?" Harry asked, bemused and curious. Cassie grinned and rolled her eyes as she took the pad back.
You weren't openly hostile. You talked to me like I was a person, and I was in the room, instead of talking about me like I was a nameless, faceless threat. You don't have a weapon, and you didn't seem aggressive. Plus, your smile is totally adorable. Hence, good vibes.
Harry, despite himself, blushed as he read the pad. Cassie had her eyebrow raised, waiting for a reply.
"I see. Well, I'm glad I'm good vibes. I think I'm starting to get what vibes means, at any rate. Where are you from that you say that?"
I'm from Earth? Where else would I be from? Specifically, the US, which let me tell you is a complete wreck at the moment. Where am I right now, anyway? You still haven't answered me.
"I mean I figured you're from Earth, seeing as you're human and you speak Federation Standard, but what's the US? And you're on the Federation Starship Voyager." Cassie's eyes widened immeasurably when Harry said that. She looked around, frantic, unsettled. When she looked back at Harry, her face was drawn in a tense, pained expression.
United States of America. USA. US. And what do you mean starship? What are we on the set of a Sci-Fi show? Starship technology, if we don't destroy the planet first, is still a long way away.
"What's the date today, Cassie?" Harry asked, a sinking sense of dread in his stomach.
Um, I'm not sure exactly but sometime in June 2020.
"Oh my God you're from the past no wonder we're both confused," Harry exclaimed. Cassie's eyes widened yet again and she took in her surroundings. She stood, slowly, and Harry stood with her. She walked around the room slowly, examining the technology and the walls and the bed, touching everything reverently.
What year is it?
"Um, we don't use years anymore, actually. The computer would probably know. Computer, by the Gregorian Calendar system, what is the date today?"
"The date today, according to the Gregorian Calendar, is June twentieth, two thousand three hundred seventy one." Cassie jumped at the voice, glancing at the ceiling and then back down at Harry with a startled expression.
"It's okay, that's just the computer. It won't hurt you," Harry reassured. Cassie sighed heavily, relaxed again and sat on one of the bio beds. She sat the pad down beside her and then held her face in her hands, gasping heavily. Harry approached her slowly, wanting to offer some sort of comfort but not knowing how it would be received.
"Hey," he said, softly. Cassie looked up, tears pooling in her eyes. Harry extended an hand awkwardly, and Cassie took it slowly, swiping at her tears with her other hand. Harry stood awkwardly for a moment, his hand holding hers gently, until she tugged on his hand and nodded at the empty space on the bed beside her. Harry sat next to her obligingly. She gripped his hand tightly and took some deep, shaky breaths in and out through her nose. After a few moments of swiping her lingering tears away, she took her hand back from Harry's and grabbed the pad.
Sorry. This is just a lot to process. And I wasn't exactly in the best shape before I got here either.
"It's okay. I can't imagine how overwhelmed you must feel. But your throat really would feel better if you let the Doc fix it," Harry offered. Cassie shook her head.
"Come on, Cassie, please? It would save you from typing so much. And I'd stay with you the whole time. Do you trust me?" Cassie looked considerate for a moment.
I'm not sure yet, in all honesty. Just because you're good vibes doesn't automatically make you trustworthy. But you remind me of someone I do trust. I guess now it's someone I did trust. Plus, my throat is killing me, and the pain meds they gave me are making my head a hazy. So fine, I'll let the Doc look at me, but you have to stay. And the other two can't come in with him. The big surly one and the captain.
Harry chuckled. "Okay, I can do that. And the Captain's name is Kathryn Janeway, and the big surly one, as you call him, is Tuvok."
Cassie shrugged philosophically, as if to say "what difference does it make, they're both accurate." Harry shook his head affectionately.
"Okay, I'm gonna have to go outside for a minute and talk to them, though. The Captain will want to know what's going on." Cassie grimaced but nodded. Harry stood and gave her one last smile before exiting sickbay.
"Well?" Janeway asked expectantly as soon as Harry walked out.
"Her name is Cassandra, but everyone calls her Cassie. She's from the past, the year 2020 to be exact, the United States of America. She's pretty suspicious of all of you. She says you have, and I quote 'bad vibes', which is something I don't completely understand yet. But she can't talk because she was in the hospital and she said they intubated her and they gave her pain medication that's making it hard for her to think. I finally convinced her to let the Doc take a look at her, but only if I stay with her and none of the rest of you come in," Harry reported. Janeway's eyes widened.
"How did she get here?" she asked.
"She says she went to bed and woke up here. She doesn't remember anything else. Whoever or whatever sent her here didn't want her to remember it," Harry answered. Janeway looked skeptical.
"Okay, for now we'll work on the assumption she is who she says she is. But I want a full DNA scan to confirm that she's human, and I want her DNA to run through the database to see if there's a her from the past, so we can confirm. Tuvok and I will go back to the bridge, since it seems there's nothing we can do here. Harry, stay with her, she seems to have bonded with you. Once the Doc checks her out set her up in some guest quarters," Janeway instructed.
"Yes ma'am. Captain, may I suggest you send Chakotay down here to meet her? She's very observant but she seems to have some sort of spiritual element to her immediate like and dislike of people. Chakotay is spiritual and he's kind, so she might take a liking to him as well," Harry suggested. Janeway nodded.
"I'll send him down," she promised, then her and Tuvok turned and went back to the bridge.
"Well, are we going to see my patient?" the Doctor asked cheerfully.
"Yeah, but let me go in first. She's a little jumpy," Harry advised. The Doctor scoffed but let Harry slowly enter the sickbay ahead of him.
