EPOV

Strays of sunlight cause me to wake up. Groaning, I roll on my stomach, trying to get more sleep. It isn't working, so I look at the clock on the nightstand.

07:58

Why me?

I always wake up before I'm supposed to. There was a time when that didn't happen. Before she arrived in this small town.

I groan again, not liking to think about her. Ever since she came here, she has been in my head. Every thought consumed by her. And it's not that she's mean. On the contrary, she is the nicest person imaginable. And maybe that's why I hate her.

Everybody knows that I, Edward Masen, am grumpy. I am grumpy because... there is no reason. I have always been like that. I am just bad tempered, and people know that. They stay away from me, as I stay away from them. But she didn't know. And when we met, I instantly disliked her.

Flashback:

I walked to the coffee shop nearby. I ordered my usual black coffee with one sugar. I was waiting, when suddenly the door opens. In walked a beautiful brunette, hair long and wavy, brown eyes filled with warmth, pink lips smiling. She ordered a cappuccino, two sugar. The table I sat was the only one free, and I was alone, so she came up and smiled softly at me.

''Do you mind if I sit here?'' she asked, voice sounding as gentle as her looks.

Yes.

I merely shrugged in response, and she sat down.

''I'm Bella Swan,'' she said.

I nodded.

''Do you have a name?'' she asked with humour in her voice.

''Edward,'' I responded.

''Hi Edward.''

Small wave.

The waitress brought my order up. I sipped my coffee, hoping she wouldn't talk again. But she did.

''I'm new in town. It's quiet here. First, I thought boring even. But I met wonderful people, and everyone knows everybody here in Forks, so it didn't take that long to fit in. Just as I think I know everyone I see you. So, what's your story?'' she rambled.

''My story?'' I asked in a bored tone.

''Yeah, everyone has a story. How did you end up here?''

Why was she interested?

''None of your business,'' I said harshly. I grabbed my coffee and practically ran out the door.

END flashback

Yeah, maybe I was mean. But I don't care.

Yes, you do, my inner voice tells me.

Shut up.

I get on my motorcycle and drive to La Push. It's my favourite place to think. The cliffs are dangerous, but I don't give a flying duck about that.

And there she is.

Standing on my cliff.

Staring at my ocean.

Maybe even thinking my thoughts.

As I approach, she turns around and smiles a tiny smile. That smile. There's something off about it.

I don't even know her.

''Hi,'' she says timidly.

I did this to her. I feel so flipping bad for it.

''Hi,'' I return, and her smile now takes my breath away. This smile reaches her eyes.

''I'm sorry,'' we both say at the same time. I chuckle. Actually, genuinely laugh quietly. Her laugh is even more beautiful than her smile.

''What on earth are you apologising for? I was the one being rude. I snapped, and I shouldn't have done that. I am sorry. You did not deserve that,'' I say. I am bad at this stuff. I have never apologised in my life before.

''I should apologize, silly. I was intruding your private coffee time, and I asked question out of line. I am sorry.'' she interrupts me.

''I was born here,'' I offer.

I smile. She makes me smile.

It seems like a start of a great friendship.
