Coming Home
Kim's thoughts were a mile away. She was in a daze. No a shock. She could not wrap her head around it all. She walked up to her apartment with her key out. She stopped as she listened. She could hear voices. She leaned in but couldn't make out what was being said. She just smiled and shook her head. She loved coming home to these two. Kim opened the door and could smell something cooking.
"Well hey you two."
Makayla ran and threw her arms around Kim's waist. "Finally you're home!"
"I am!"
Adam turned around from the stove where he was stirring something.
"I almost put out a BOLO. Everything go ok at the doctor? What took you so long?"
"All good Adam." Kim smiled before turning her attention to MaKayla who was pulling on her arm.
"Look what Adam bought me today." She pulled Kim towards the couch. "Close your eyes". MaKayla was jumping up and down.
"What did you eat today missy? You are bouncing all over the place."
"Adam got me ice cream!"
Adam laughed and shrugged when Kim looked at him with a smirk.
"Look". MaKayla squealed. "Adam bought me ice skates. Aren't they beautiful? And he signed me up for lessons that start this Saturday." MaKayla was too excited to stand still.
"He did now? They're beautiful. I love the colors. You will look wonderful in pink and white skates."
"Go wash up MaKayla. Supper is about ready." Adam walked around the counter towards them.
"So, skating lessons huh?" Kim smirked at him while she grabbed his chin and pulled him towards her for a quick kiss.
"She's good at it. She took to it like a duck to water a few weeks ago when we went. Every child needs a hobby. An outlet for some fun and exercise. I think she will be awesome at it." Adam turned around to go back to the kitchen.
"So, you gonna tell me what happened at your appointment or what?"
"After supper. I'm starved and we need to get MaKayla's homework done and she needs to get to bed at a decent hour tonight."
"Homework is complete. She already had her bath. She just wanted to put on some comfy clothes. I told you. I'm a natural at this co-parenting thing." He smiled as he grabbed Kim around the waist for a quick kiss.
"Ready to eat!" MaKayla sat at the table. "I helped Adam cook. I made the salad and added lots of bacon bits."
"I should say so!" Kim brought the plate she fixed for her to the table along with her milk.
"Fettuccini Alfredo. My fave!" Kim went to fix her plate.
They chatted about their days. Adam and Kim loved hearing MaKayla talk about school and her new friends.
"Can Adam pick me up from school
tomorrow?"
"We will have to see about our schedule but one of us will get you for sure. Do you like the after school program?"
MaKayla nodded. "It's great."
They finished eating and MaKayla took her plate to the sink.
"Adam, will you read me a story."
"I sure will." He smiled at Kim.
"Go ahead. I'll clean up since you cooked. That's the deal anyway!"
Adam was glad to leave the kitchen for Kim. He was not the cleanest cook but he made up for it by being a pretty good cook.
Kim just finished putting the last of the dishes away when Adam came back out.
"Well she's out like a light. We barely got through the second book."
"I'm surprised. She was hyped up on ice cream and skates." Kim chuckled.
Adam grabbed her around the waist, rested his chin on her shoulder and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
"I missed you today. How was the doctor. You haven't said much so it makes me kind of nervous."
Kim put the dish towel down and turned to face Adam.
"It was good. They did the necessary blood work and examine."
"Ok." Adam nodded. "And everything is ok with you."
"Yeah. It is."
"But. I sense a but."
Kim dragged Adam by his hand to the couch.
"Adam, I didn't want to say anything in front of MaKayla." Kim couldn't help the smile growing on her face.
"I'm pregnant. We're pregnant, again. I know we said we wanted to wait. I know the timing is not right and..."
Adam interrupted Kim with a kiss.
"Seriously? We're going to have a baby?"
Kim nodded. "Yes!" She grinned.
"Kim, I couldn't be happier."
"Really? I mean we have a lot of changes to consider. Like we have to find a bigger place. And MaKayla loves her school so we can't move out of the zone. Adam, she's been through so much. How will she take it? Will she think she is being replaced?
"Kim! It's going to be alright. Everything is going to work itself out. Nothing will ruin this for us. I love you. I love us. All of us. I already love our baby." Adam kissed Kim's forehead as she tucked her head under his chin and held onto his chest.
