PROLOGUE:
THE FALLEN NATION
On a summer's day in 202X, two men wandered their way up Mt. Ebbot in the Spanish countryside…
Leave it to stupid Spain to send them wandering off into the hills for no reason.
"It'll be good for us!~" He'd said. "The birds are singings, the flowers are in bloom, on days like this… It's a perfect opportunity to picnic and explore!~"
(Who would wanna go fucking wandering around like this anyways?! It's way too much goddamn walking.) Romano thought to himself, huffing as he tried to keep up with his idiot former boss. The other man was striding forward easily, completely oblivious to his companion struggling behind him.
"Ay Antonio, you found a good enough spot yet? I'm getting real sick of walking you bastard!" He hears Spain laugh easily, turning back to face him as he reaches a clearing in the trees.
"Falling behind already?" Spain flashes him a teasing grin, winking at him like what he said was actually funny.
"Fuck off you bastard. Just tell me if we're close yet!"
"Si!~ There's cave opening ahead and it looks like the perfect place for exploring."
"Lunch for two in a cold ass dark fuckin' cave. Just perfect."
"Aaaaaaah c'mon Romano I'm sure its not nearly as bad as you're making it out to be. It's only a little ways ahead!"
Romano stomped his way up to stand beside Spain, leaning forward to take in the clearing. It was… Undeniably nice. Flowers lead the way straight into the cave, the sky was cloudless, birdsong filled the air, it was disgustingly picturesque.
"… I guess it's good enough for lunch." Romano huffed, unable to help but relax a little bit. (At least I'm getting lunch out of this, and Spain can wear himself out while I sit on my ass and watch the flowers.)
It was a quick walk up to the cave. Looking inside, it was a nice enough of a place. (Well, nice enough as caves come.) The ground was littered with beautiful flowers, ivy climbed pleasantly up the walls, the mouth was open and lead downwards leaving the place filled with sunshine. It would've been perfect except for the giant ass hole in the middle of the floor.
Speaking of which, his moron of a friend was immediately wandering straight over to the fucking thing. It took a moment for Romano to register what his stupid boss was doing before he began tailing after him.
"Ooooooooooy Spain what the hell are you doing?! Look we can eat in the cave but at least keep back from the hole." He rushes along beside Spain, looking up at him, to the hole they were quickly getting too close to comfort to, and back to Spain again.
"Eh? Aren't you curious what's at the bottom?" The Spaniard flashes him an innocent smile as he stands on the edge of the gaping maw, maybe a little too innocent.
"No! I'm not! Not curious enough to risk falling the whole fucking way down anyways! Now get back already before you fall in!" Even as Romano snaps at his friend, part of him can't help peeking into the gaping hole. The flowers trailed all the way down the sides but the floor below filled itself out, almost like there was a separate room down there…
"Alright, alright, I'll start setting up the picnic then." Spain holds up his hands in a gently defensive gesture, backing away from the hole and towards a bare spot near the cave entrance, turning away as he put down the picnic basket and untied the blanket from where it was perched on top.
Romano sighs, standing still a moment, turning back to look into the strange hole. It was perfectly circular, a square of flowers lying at the center below him. The flower patch was perfectly square and perfectly centered beneath him, and somehow very well lit. (Weird ass cave, somethings kinda wrong with this place huh?) Romano huffs, standing back on his heels and closing his eyes. (Maybe we should leave.)
"You planning on falling down yourself then Lovi?" Spains voice calls to him lightly from somewhere behind him.
"Of course not, I'm not an idiot you fuck-" Just as the words came out of his mouth he felt something snag on his ankle. The momentum of his spinning around to leave was backfiring, yanking him backwards, tearing the vine at his ankle and in a heart beat
