Chapter One

Dottie had been a loyal house elf to the Selwyn family for her entire life. She had served her Master's parents until their death and now she was entirely loyal to her young master Mathalus Selwyn. Master was a good, kind man, unlike his parents, her former masters. Old masters Marcus and Gwendoline Selwyn were mean masters who took pride in making Dottie feel as if she were vermin. She cried tears of joy when they died, in which she had to slap her own head in punishment and cried even more tears when Mathalus became her new master. Master was so kind to Dottie, even though she was old, and his pretty wife Helena Lupin was even kinder. They married during the great wizarding war and moved into Selwyn manor after the death of Master's parents. They were passionate in fighting against He-Who-Must-Not-Named and protecting wizards and muggles of all kinds. Dottie was more than happy to do serve her kind Masters and was even more overjoyed when Mistress Helena became pregnant! Dottie loved taking care of wizard babies and Mistress's firstborn was such a delight. Finnick was a good baby, although could be a bit of a troublemaker when his magic began to show. Dottie was even more overjoyed when Mistress had another baby, this time a girl who they named Trissella. Baby Trisella inherited the Selwyn blonde hair, but her eyes were all her mothers, a deep blue unlike her brother and father's hazel eyes. She was even sweeter than young master Finnick and as Dottie helped Mistress take care of her, she couldn't help but think about happy she was serving such a good wizarding family.

"Dottie could you grab Finnick's breakfast? Trissella here needs a new nappie." Mistress Helena said with the happy but tired tone of a busy mother of two. It was a hot July day and the windows were all open to let in the sunshine and since April 16th, the Selwyn family had been kept especially busy with the arrival of baby Trissella.

"Of course, Mistress!" Dottie said with her squeaky voice. She whipped up together a delicious of eggs and fruit for the 3-year-old Finnick who was too busy playing with his stuffed dragon to even notice his wailing sister. Helena got Trissella changed and sat in her rocking chair in the parlor, soothing her 3-month-old daughter. Master Mathalus came down the stairs, dressed smartly in fine navy wizarding robes and went to help his wife soothe their crying daughter.

"Come to daddy, angel!" Master scooped up the red-faced infant and his face lit up with joy as she began to stop crying.

"Oh that's not fair! She calms for you now, but the moment you get to go off to the order meeting she'll start right back up" Mistress Helena said with tired eyes and an amused smile.

"That's because she is daddy's little princess" he said with a big grin on his face. Mistress Helena rolled her eyes with a smile and Master Mathalus bent down to peck her on the check and place the now sleeping baby into her arms.

"I love you darling. See you this evening" Mathalus said, putting on his traveling cloak.

"Love you too. Tell Lily and James that we are having my brother Remus over for a birthday dinner Friday evening if they would like to join us, along with Peter and Sirius. I'm in desperate need to socialize with people other than our children." Helena said with a laugh. The Marauders and Lily had been close friends of theirs since they were in school. Helena had been in Gryffindor with the lot of them, although she was three years ahead, while Mathalus had been in her year but in Ravenclaw. Since her brother had his "Furry little problem" she had been fiercely protective when he had started school, so it was only a matter of time that she had become fast friends with Remus's school mates. Helena had started dating Mathalus in their fourth year after a tragic potions accident where Mathalus had spilled his hair growth potion all over Helena in their potions class. He had apologized so profusely to her in the hospital wing as Madame Pomfrey tried to fix her 20 feet of arm hair, and he asked her on a date to Hogsmeade to make up for it. Since that day the pair of them had become fast friends and even closer when they officially dated. Helena introduced Mathalus to the Marauders and they formed a group of friends that had lasted even beyond their years at Hogwarts.

Mathalus laughed and replied with "I will".

He called out to Dottie and Finnick "See you tonight Dottie! And Finnick be a good boy for Mummy and Dottie please!" Mathalus scooped up a handful of floo powder and was off to another day of being an Auror and fighting against that darkness that was taking over the wizarding world.

Dottie made herself busy by helping Mistress with baby Trisella and young Master Finnick while going about her chores for the day. She dusted, she cooked, she did the laundry and would do it all again to please her kind masters who took great care of her. In the afternoon, she fixed up a lunch of tasty sandwiches for Mistress and Finnick who ate them with great pleasure. As young Master Finnick laughed at a funny face Mistress made at him, a sudden crack made them all stop in place. Since the start of the war, protective charms had been put in place at the old manor to keep the Selwyn family safe from Death Eater attacks. No one could see the manor if they didn't know it was there already.

Helena sprung out her chair and rushed to the window to see a face she had never hoped to see again, her brother-in-law Felix. Mathalus hadn't seen his brother in years, not since he found out he had sworn allegiance to You-Know-Who. Mathalus had sworn to himself that he would never be like his pureblood family, who only cared about blood status and took pleasure in the killing of muggleborns and muggles alike. He didn't shed a tear when his parents died, who had cast him out of their house when he told them he would never be like them and vowed to protect muggleborns. Helena had known Felix in school at Hogwarts and she could not forget the evil smile on his faced when he tried to curse her friend who was a muggleborn, or the foul way he shouted mudblood at other muggleborn students. She was not surprised when Mathalus told her he saw Felix with other known Death Eaters and had come to the conclusion that he was now a loyal supporter of You-Know-Who.

Helena whipped around to face Dottie, fear on her face when she realized there were other Death Eaters with Felix.

"Dottie you must protect the children. That is an order. Take Trissella and Finnick and hide. Do not come out no matter what happens."

Mistress Helena scooped up Trissella and thrust her into Dottie's hands. Dottie was scared, worse than she had ever been of being punished by her old masters. Not because she was scared for herself, but for Mistress and her innocent children. Mistress Helena kissed Trissella on the cheek and quickly hugged Finnick, telling the toddler to stay quiet and do as Dottie said. Dottie wanted to take the children somewhere else, but it was too late. The Death Eaters were at the door so Helena pushed Dottie and the children into a cupboard, praying to whoever would listen that Trissella would stay quiet and that her children would be safe. The Death Eaters burst in with Felix at the front. He had grown since Helena had last seen him and there was a wild look in his eyes that she knew all too well. Two Death Eaters she didn't recognize were with him.

"Felix get out of here!" She shouted pointing her wand at him. Felix stopped in his tracks and a twisted smile began to grow on his face.

"Hello Helena" he said with a sneer "Where's my blood traitor brother?"

"He's not here so get out!" she said firmly, although her hand shook as she pointed her wand.

"Not until I get Mathalus. Search the house for him" he ordered to the Death Eaters behind him. They took off upstairs, and Helena could hear a ruckus as they ransacked the manor looking for her husband.

"what do you want with him?" She asked

"He needs to pay for betraying the family and the name of wizard. My lord tasked me with wiping out the blood traitor who soiled our pureblood name to test my loyalty." He said pointing his wand at her.

Dottie heard this all through the secret cupboard behind the grandfather clock in the kitchen and held on tightly to the children as Finnick began to shake with fear.

"You betrayed the name of wizard when you took that mark onto your skin." She said pointing to his arm which had the Death Eater tattoo displayed proudly for all to see. "Mathalus isn't here and even if he was, I would never let you hurt him"

"hmm that's a pity then. I promised my master that blood would be shed here today and so it shall. First it will be you and then my filthy traitor brother, and then maybe we'll even have some fun with those brats of yours" he said with a deadly calm that betrayed no remorse or regret.

Fear struck her heart at the thought of this man laying a single finger on her children. He shouted the cruciatus curse and pain like Helena had never felt before ravaged her body. She thrashed wildly on the ground as the pain intensified and then stopped suddenly. She breathed heavily as body ached from the curse, but slowly and wobbly she stood up and pointed her wand.

She stood her ground and adjusted her grip on her wand, motherly instincts taking over any sense of fear. "You will not touch them" she said preparing to fight.

Felix only smiled at her and uttered "goodbye Helena" they both let loose spells and curses at each other but Felix was faster.

Dottie gasped as she saw the green light of the killing curse strike down her mistress, through a crack in the door. Thick tears running down her face as she heard the thump of a body hitting the floor.

Felix turn around without a second glance and shouted up to his fellow death eaters "it's done, let's get out of here!".

Dottie held her breath as she waited to hear the familiar cracks of the intruders apparating from the manor. When she was sure it was safe, she ran out from her hiding spot, to her dead mistress wailing over her body.

"Mistress I'm so sorry! Please forgive me!" She choked out through thick sobs. Trissella, who had miraculously remained asleep through all that transpired had begun crying and Finnick, too young and scared to even process what had happened, remain frozen staring down at his now dead mother.

Dottie cried for her Mistress but knew that she must get the children out, incase bad Master Felix returned to get them. She used her elf magic to apparate herself and the children to Master Mathalus.

She arrived in what looked like a home, where wizards were talking around a table. She recognized some faces of wizards who would visit her masters like the Potters, Weasleys, Sirius Black, the Longbottoms, Marlene McKinnon, Peter Pettigrew, the Prewitt twins, Mad Eyed Moody, Albus Dumbledore, Mistress's brother Remus Lupin and finally her eyes stopped on Master Mathalus, whose eyes widened in shock at seeing his house elf and children at the Order of the Phoenix. He sprung out of his chair and rushed over to Dottie who was sobbing as she held the children close to her.

"Dottie what's happened?!" He shouted in fear at the state of his elderly house elf.

In her sobs Dottie managed to choke out "Master! Felix! Attack! Looking for you! Mistress! Dead!" In that final word she collapsed into a fit of sobs and a heavily pregnant Lily Potter rushed over to console the poor house elf.

The color drained from Mathalus's face.

No, no it couldn't be. Not Helena. No, it's not happening. He thought to himself denying that his wife was dead.

It felt like he was struck with a stunning curse, unable to move, or even to breathe. Arthur Weasley rushed over and took the children into his arms. Remus Lupin sunk to his knees at the loss of his dear sister. Tears were in James and Lily's eyes as well as other members of the order.

Mathalus was in a state of shock until Albus Dumbledore came over and put his hand on his arm. Mathalus sprung out of his shocked state, and the weight of what Dottie had said hit him with full force.

"I need to see her. I need to save her. She can't. She can't be.." he trailed off as tears began to rush down his handsome face.

"I will come with you Mathalus" Dumbledore said with an even voice and his face grave.

Remus Lupin lifted up his head and spoke quietly through his tears "I'm coming with you. I need to see for myself" Albus nodded and together they apparated to the manor with Arthur Weasley and the children as well. The dark mark ominously hung over the beautiful manor, the sign that only death awaited them.

They ran in and Mathalus collapsed next to his wife's fallen form, holding her in his arms crying. "Wake up. Please wake up Helena. Don't leave me." He cradled her body like that for what felt like hours until he felt a tiny hand on his shoulder. He looked up to see his crying son and Arthur Weasley next to him holding his sleeping daughter. Mathalus collected Trissella from his friend and held his son in one arm and held baby Trissella in the other. He looked at his daughter who had awoken to being moved and Mathalus looked into her eyes, seeing his own wife's blue ones reflected back. Tears ran down his face knowing that his wife was taken from this world by his own brother but would live on in his children, who he loved more than anything in this world. Albus walked up next to him and spoke in his calming voice that could make anyone feel at ease "She may be gone from this world, but your children will keep her alive in your heart forever"
