vault 101 a few months before the events of broken steel.
The Wanderer stood in front of the exit to vault 101, freedom was so close, he just needed to push a little further.
Amata, tears in her eyes, stood behind him.
"Why did you do it," she asked, "why did you kill my father."
"I'm sorry," the Wanderer said in a remorseful tone, "There was no other way."
"You don't know what it's like, to lose someone that's close to you," Amata said, "go, now, before I turn you in."
The Wanderer walked off into the wasteland, to go look for his father.
a week later.
The Wanderer exited the metro station in front of Galaxy News Radio. At least GNR supposed to be there, but all he could see is debris of fallen buildings. He turned on his Pip-Boy radio to see if the radio signal was any stronger.
*click*
"LETS GO SUNNING," his Pip-Boy blasted.
He turned it down immediately, hopefully not attracting any of them zombies fuckers from the subway.
Well at least he knew GNR was close.
PEW.
A bullet zipped by his face
"HOLY SHIT," the Wanderer yelled.
When He looked over to where the bullets came from, saw a couple of buff goblins with guns. He was about to shoot his Hunting rifle at them when someone completely annihilated them. He turned to see who and saw these badass looking dudes in badass looking armor, and standing in the middle is a girl.
"Holy shit she's cute," the Wanderer thought.
"I don't know who you are," the girl said, "but our men at GNR are swarmed by super mutants, so if you want to get in follow us!"
"Uh... yes... yes ma'am," the Wanderer said, "but wait, who are you guys?"
"I'm Sentinel Lyons," the girl said, "and we are the Brotherhood of Steel."
The Wanderer followed the Brotherhood as they navigated through the rubble and debris, killing every super mutant in their path until they got to the front of the GNR offices. It was truly a sight to behold. After admiring it for a minute the Wanderer heard a deep roar. He looked over to the bus where the roar seemed to be coming from and saw nothing. A few seconds later this freaking huge super mutant burst through the bus
"Oh shit," one of the Brotherhood members exclaimed, "it's a behemoth."
"Hey kid," Sentinel Lyons yelled, "you wanna help out? Grab the Fat Man off of the guy draped over the fountain and shoot this behemoth with it."
He knew what a fat man was, they taught it to him in vault as one of his elections. He went to the body they were talking about grabbed the fat man off of the dead body, aimed it at the behemoth and...
feeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
KA-BOOOOOMMMMMM
The behemoth exploded into a thousand bits, it was fricking awesome. After a few minutes Sentinel Lyons came up to him
"You can go talk to three dawg now," as he walked towards the GNR building Lyons said, "hey kid, thanks for your help today."
He turned around and said, "no problem, if the brotherhood ever needs a new member, just hit me up."
She chuckled and said, "thanks for the offer."
"Holy shit," he thought, "even her smiles cute."
He turned around and walked towards the GNR building, whistling "Let's Go Sunning" all the way down
After the events of broken steel
"You there buddy," Sarah said to the Lone Wanderer
"Uh yeah I am," the Lone Wanderer responded, snapping back into reality.
Fawks, Sarah, and the Lone Wanderer lay face down several yards away from the capital building. They were supposed to take it back because of a battle plan that was set by the scribes. This plan focused on wiping out super mutant hotspots. Once these hotspots are out it will only be a matter of time before the super mutant threat in the Capital Wasteland is nearly finished. Sarah got onto her portable ham radio and said,
"Do y'all guys remember the plan?"
As yes the battle plan, Their mission is the simple, clear out the super mutants in the area, and inside the capital building. The scribes over at the citadel devised a battle plan that basically attacks every super mutant POI in the capital wasteland, and one of the main POI's included the capital building and the areas around it.
"Yep," a member of the Brotherhood said on the other end, "start running towards the capital building as soon as we hear the Gatling Laser."
"Ok," Sarah said, "Fawks are you ready?"
"I am ready friend," Fawkes said.
"What about you 'Lone Wanderer'? (as you like to be called)" Sarah muttered under her breath.
"Ready as I'll ever be," the Lone Wanderer said.
"In 3... 2.. 1. Go!" Sarah exclaimed.
Fawkes stood up and started firing his Gatling laser upon the super mutants, dropping them like flys. While fawkes was busy offing his own brothers, Sarah got up ran towards the trenches that lay in front of the capital building. The Lone Wanderer, gripping his assault rifle, followed. As they were running the Lone Wanderer saw the brotherhood knights that surrounded the capital building running towards the trenches.
As soon as Sarah and The Wanderer jumped into the trench, Fawkes started pushing towards the Capital Building following the orderers that the lone wanderer gave him, "kill every super mutant you see on your ." Sarah, and The Wanderer were traversing the trenches when *plink* a bullet bounced off the wanderers head. Sarah shot the mutant that fired the bullet.
"You ok?" Sarah asked.
"Yep, this is t 51 power armor which has way better protection than the shit the brotherhood provided for you," the Wanderer jokingly said.
Sarah chuckled before saying, "damn ok."
They continued to walk through the trenches clearing out any super mutants they saw when 2 more Brotherhood members jumped into the trenches with them.
"Report men," Sarah said, "what are your other squad mates currently doing."
"Following the plan by aiding Fawkes in exterminating the super mutants above the trenches, Ma'am," a Brotherhood member said.
"Good," Sarah said.
They continued to traverse the trenches and killed any super mutants they found along the way. Soon they met up with fawkes and the other Brotherhood members at the front of the Capital Building.
"Ready?" The Lone Wanderer asked.
The group responded with a mix of yes's and ready's. The Lone Wanderer opened the door into the Capital Building to see some super mutants (as expected) firing at some people. When he got a closer look he saw they were firing on...
"Talon Company mercs?" The Wanderer asked "What are they doing here?"
One of the mercs looked at them and yelled, "Oh shit it's the Brotherhood"
The mercs then turned their attention towards the Brotherhood and opened fire, but between them opening themselves up to the super mutants, and the brotherhood being trained better than Talon Company, they were killed in an instant. After the mercs were taken care of the brotherhood killed the super mutants in the room. The Lone Wanderer went to the body of one of the Talon Company mercs and searched it.
"Lemme guess," Sarah said, "you're looking for ammo?"
"Well that too, but I'm also looking for," the Lone Wanderer pulled a note from the body, "evidence. Let's see what this says, "this is to all the remnants of Talon Company, for those of you who don't know, the brotherhood found out we were sacking their water caravans, and in retaliation they wiped everyone out in the main camp. I'm planning a counter attack and the first step is establishing a new base. Meet me at the front of the capital building for the plan.""
"So these dicks here, what now," a Brotherhood member said.
"The plan's still on," Sarah said, "Fawkes you take portion of the group and go right, I'll take a portion of the group and go left."
The Lone Wanderer bid farewell to fawkes and went left with Sarah and the 3 other Brotherhood members.
The hallway they were walking down was long and filled with the things you'd expect to find in a museum. At the end of the hallway there was a right turn, it was the only point people could ambush from so they were focused on that point.
Well focused on it until someone asked, "you know, I've always wondered, if we're at war with the super mutants, then why are we fighting alongside Fawkes, you know the friendly super mutant?"
"Because when I first brought Fawkes to the citadel," the Wanderer started, "Elder Lyons tried to kick him out, calling him an 'abomination.' I made it a point that if they treated Fawkes like shit, then I was out of there. A few months later and we're all great friends."
They walked through the hallway some more before Sarah put her fist up and said "shhh"
They tiptoed forward until a faint voice could be heard
"Crazy he called me, sure I'm crazy, crazy in love with you."
Someone was listening to the radio around that corner. Sarah bolted towards the end of the hall way, and the Lone Wanderer, surprised by this fact ran after her and yelled, "Sarah, what are you doing!?"
She turned the corner, and unloaded her laser rifle onto, presumably the people listening to the radio. When the Wanderer caught up to Sarah he looked at what she was firing at and found 4 dead Talon Company mercs a lying on or next to a table with a radio on it.
The wanderer opened his mouth to ask why she ran off, but Sarah spoke up first, "when I initially heard the radio I thought 'well if someone's there they probably heard us talking, so fuck it.' I then ran towards the sound of the radio and shot em all up."
"That's..." the Wanderer started, "it's fucking crazy how you were able to kill them before they had a chance to shoot at you."
"I'm a Brotherhood Sentinel," Sarah said, "we were taught that a missed shot could mean the death of our squad, and Mr. Wanderer, protecting your squad... is way better protection than what that T-51 shit Gives you."
The 3 other Brotherhood members burst out in laughter and the Lone Wanderer chuckled too until he realized something.
"Why are you guys laughing," the Wanderer asked.
"Yeah, Sarah's comms were on when you were roasting the t-45," a Brotherhood member said, "she keeps them in incase something bad happens."
The Brotherhood continued to walk throughout the capital building until they entered one of the old tourist attractions in the building, it had debris of fallen statues littered around the place. Dead bodies were spread out, some were Brotherhood and some were Talon Company. The Wanderer could see Sarah counting silently.
"Four bodies," Sarah said, "thats Fawkes' entire squad... dead."
"B-b-but I don't see Fawkes' body," the Wanderer said nervously, "maybe he's still alive."
The Wanderer collected their holotags to bring back to the Brotherhood, and then the group walked down the hall. As they walked they saw dead super mutant bodies, almost all of them had soot all over their bodies, this was Fawkes' doing. They spotted many more super mutant bodies but none of them sported Fawkes iconic vault 87 jumpsuit. When they made it to the end of the attraction they heard a loud,
"RRRRRROOOOOAAAAAAARRRRRR"
Followed by a familiar sounding
"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA"
Followed by multiple gunshot noises. The Brotherhood squad dashed towards here the noises were to find Fawkes and some Talon Company mercs teaming up on a super mutant behemoth. Without hesitation the rest of the Brotherhood split up into group took cover and rained fire upon the behemoth. Sarah and the Wanderer ducked behind a piece of rubble.
"Just like the old days huh," the wanderer said to Sarah.
"Yep," Sarah said, "so what's the plan."
The wanderer looked at the scene and saw one of the talon company members using a rocket launcher. A light bulb went off in his head.
"I think it's time I brought out the lightning launcher!" The Wanderer exclaimed
He got out his Tesla cannon that he named "the lightning launcher." He aimed it at the behemoth and...
It made a big metal "CLICK".
"Oh shit" the wanderer thought, "it isn't loaded and I forgot to buy an Electron Charge pack."
"I've got you covered," Sarah said as she tossed him an EC pack. The Wanderer was about to ask how she knew when she said, "you always forget to buy ammo for that thing."
The Wanderer nodded at her, loaded the pack into the Cannon, aimed and...
BZZZT
Nearly every cell in the behemoth was fried to bits, and all that was left was a pile of ash.
There was a moment of peace for a bit, until a Talon Company merc spoke up, "Well now that guys taken care of, it's time to take the capital building."
The merc then got out his rocket launcher and fired it at Sarah. The Wanderer (thinking on his feet) knocked Sarah out of the way and took the rocket to the chest. The explosion knocked him back into the wall that was behind him. His ears rang and his vision was blurry, but in between the ringing he heard gunshots and yelling and then it went silent...
well as silent as it can get when your ears are ringing. When his vision cleared he saw Sarah standing over him.
"Are you ok?" She asked holding her hand out to him.
He grabbed it got up and looked around at the scene. There were dead Talon Company mercs all on their side of the room they were in. He then looked at Sarah and said,
"Uh... Yeah never felt better," the Wanderer said
And then he did something that surprised everyone in the room, even himself. He leaned in and kissed her. A ton of things were going through his head, "what the hell am I doing, why the hell am I doing this, this is my boss that I'm kissing, I could get fired for this, will I be able to face the rejection that's inevitably going to come after this."
But to his surprise she didn't pull away, she seemed to melt in it. Alright enough describing a frickin kiss, the wanderer felt his Pip-Boy vibrate. He pulled away and looked at his it for a few minutes and then said...
"Are we done clearing the place out?"
Sarah was redder than a tomato when she said, "Um, yeah, yeah we're done with this place."
"Good because gunny sent me a message on my Pip-Boy," the Wanderer said, "he's wants back at the Citadel ASAP."
an hour later.
The Wanderer stood outside of a medical room in the citadel listening to Sarah's muffle sobs coming from the room. About 30 minutes after the mission started, elder Lyons went into cardiac arrest, the doctors said they tried their best to save him but couldn't. Her sobs stopped, and she exited the room.
"Hey," the lone wanderer said in a groggy voice.
She turned to him.
"if..." he continued, "you ever want to talk, you know where to find me."
She smiled at him before walking away.
4 weeks later
Another day another phase of the battle plan, It was also Newly crowned elder, Sarah Lyons' first mission as elder. Normally the elder of the Brotherhood would just sit around while the peasants do their bidding, but Sarah, she's different, she didn't want to sit on her ass while her men died out there, so she decided to the exact opposite of that and decided to join them in battle.
the site they were going to liberate was what you'd expect to see in the Capital Wasteland, a destroyed, desolate pre war city, with a few craters, all being occupied by super mutants.
They landed and everyone went off to rid the place of super mutants, be it less tactically than what they did at the Capital Building. The Wanderer saw Sarah Lyons run into the battle field and was about to catch up to her when paladin Vargas ran up to the Wanderer to talk to him.
"Hey Wanderer?" He said
"Yes Vargas," the Wanderer responded.
"I got a question about the elder," Vargas said.
"Oh shit," the wanderer muttered, "what is it?"
"Has the elder talked to you recently?" Vargas asked
"Well you know the elder, she's been distant ever since the funeral," the wanderer started, "She hasn't talked to anyone since, not even me. Why are you asking anyway."
"It's just that," Vargas started, "ever since the fall of the enclave she seems to trust you the most, so I thought if she'd talk to anyone after his death, it would be you."
"Well sorry to tell you but your investigating was a waste of time," the Wanderer said, "now this place ain't going to clear itself out is it?"
The Wanderer lost Sarah within the battle so he didn't even bother trying to find her, so he went with Fawkes and with the help of the rest of the Brotherhood, they cleared out the site of all the super mutants. The day was won, or at least it seemed that way until the Lone Wanderer heard a
"Ahhhhhh!"
That was Sarah. Panicking, the Lone Wanderer ran towards the scream to where he saw a knight named James standing over a small crater pointing a laser rifle at a fallen super mutant. He looked in the crater and saw Sarah laying down in there. He jumped down and saw that there was a bullet hole on her side. Immediately he started connecting the dots, Sarah and James were fighting that super mutant, but the mutant managed to land a shot that pierced . James managed to kill the mutant but couldn't catch Sarah before she fell into the crater.
Panicking he stuck a stimpack into Sarah to temporarily heal the wound, but the Wanderer knew that she would need to get the bullet removed if she was going to survive. The wanderer yelled at James "is the vertibird ready?"
"Yes sir," James said.
And with the help of the vertibird they rushed to the citadel to get actual medical help.
The Citadel a few hours later.
The lone wanderer stood outside of a med bay room waiting for the doctor (doctor mason) to tell him something good.
The doctor came out and said, "she's doing fine now that we got that bullet out of her. She just needs to rest for a bit."
"Ok," the lone Wanderer said.
"You can go in there now if you want," Dr mason said.
He entered the room and saw Sarah laying there unconscious. It was heartbreaking seeing her like this again. Except last time he knew she was going to recover from what happened at the memorial because she wasn't the one inside the purifier. This situation seemed more hopeless. He sat down and waited until he noticed something on Sarah's back. There were burn marks on her back. Thinking he was seeing things, so he got closer and lord and behold there were three burn marks on her back, sure the soot was cleaned off but the burn marks were still there. But how could he have missed this. After thinking for a second he remembered how he never bothered to look at her back during the rush to the citadel so it was very easy to miss that.
Another the only weapons the super mutants used were hunting and assault rifles, none of them used energy weapons. Then he remembered how that knight James had a laser rifle, so maybe he shot Sarah. But would he really try to pull something against Sarah, against the brotherhood? For all he knew it could've been an accident. There have been reports of brotherhood outcasts trying to take down the actual brotherhood, could James be apart of the Outcasts? He should question James about what happened, maybe that'll answer all the questions he has.
The Wanderer left the med bay room and turned to Fawkes who was standing outside and said, "Fawkes the only people who can enter are Dr Mason and Me. If anyone tries to get in tell them I said no."
"Got it friend," Fawkes said.
Something was going on, and the lone wanderer was going to find out exactly what was going on.
