Din had heard from Luke Skywalker the Jedi. It was probably one of the happiest moments of his life. Or so he thought, but then it got better. Luke would be spending time with his sister and brother-in-law for a few weeks, and Grogu missed Din, so he wanted to know if he could come back during that time.
Obviously, the answer was yes!
Din counted the days until Grogu came back. He annoyed Bo, Koska, and Axe. Once he annoyed a random person who they encountered who kept looking at him as if he wanted him to shut up. Din hadn't realized until it was too late. And then he stopped. And let Axe and Koska pull him away. Bo-Katan stared at him in that way she did. That way that confused him.
"You're turning into such a dad," Axe said, elbowing him in his side as the group had left their ship to get supplies. Din had thought about staying behind, but he wanted to make sure to have some special treats for Grogu. Before he might not have gotten him a bunch of candy and cookies, but he had been gone a long time and Grogu deserved it.
"He's more of a dad than my dad," Koska said, grinning as if it was a hilarious joke.
Din stared at her, not that she could tell because he was wearing his helmet.
"The ultimate dad!" Axe said, laughing. He grinned as Koska. The two of them seemed to be the best of friends. Almost closer to brother and sister to Din.
"I have some jokes that you can tell the kid," Axe said.
Din stared at him.
"They're really good. The kid will love them. Trust me."
He didn't, especially when it came to this.
"So remember your ship, the Razor Crest?"
There was a long silence. "Yes," Din said, finally ending it. How could he forget his ship? He still missed it. And he had a lot of good memories with Grogu there.
"Well do you know why it's called the Razor Crest, Din?" They all called him Din now. They had said it would be weird if they called him "mando" since they were all Mandalorian. He hated to admit, but they were probably right.
So he told them his actual name. Bo had already known but the other two didn't.
"I mean it's the model nam—
"Wrong!" Axe said, not even letting him finish. "It's called that because it's gotten people out of a lot of close shaves."
Din stared at him, not even sure what to say. Bo did the same thing, where as Koska smirked and rolled her eyes. "That's really horrible."
"You've been waiting to use that for awhile, haven't you?" Bo-Katan asked.
"I have another one," Axe said, not put off by their reactions. "So where did the Mandalorian find his missing armor?"
"Where?" Koska asked.
"The lost and foundling!" Axe grinned.
Koska groaned and shook her head.
"Those are really bad," Din said. Maybe Grogu would like them though but still they were pretty bad.
"I have one more. I wrote this one especially for you and the kid. When the—" Axe didn't get a chance to finish his joke.
"Oh come on. Give Din a break. He can't help that he's embracing the dad lifestyle," Bo said. Din had recently called her that in his head, but he never dared to in person. "Seriously let him be." She looked at Axe. "Though it seems you're more the master of dad jokes."
"I can't help I have a gift," Axe said.
Koska sighed dramatically and Axe exchanged looks with her, but they stopped. However, did smile at each other in a weird way that Din didn't understand.
"Din really is pure dad though," Axe said."
Bo shook her head, but at least that was the end of it. The whole group ended up picking up some things for Grogu after that. Art supplies. They had been sent to Bo-Katan. How she knew they would be there? Din wasn't sure because he thought it hadn't been planned.
"My niece Sabine is obsessed with things like this," Bo-Katan said, her eyes lightening up in a way Din had hardly ever seen. It was… weird. "I told Ursa about Grogu and Sabine must have wanted Grogu to have some art. Kids love making art." Her eyes somehow lit up even more.
"Your niece?" Axe asked. "I thought your sister—"
"She's not my blood niece," Bo said as she looked up at him. "But Ursa might as well be my sister and Sabine's her daughter. Sabine is the most talented person I know artistically." She made eye contact with Din. "Grogu should meet her one day. I bet he'd like to make art with her."
"Probably," Din said. He put his hand on the back of his helmet. "He would for sure if there were snacks involved."
"We could make sure there was," Bo said. She was excited. It was… different. "We could get eggs and macarons for him. You said he liked those."
"Yeah, he really does," Din said. He smiled, not that any of them could see it. "But he'd probably like any kind of food as long as it wasn't too healthy."
"Sounds like Axe," Koska said.
"Hey, I can't help that I have good taste. Life is too short to spend all your time eating healthy things."
"You're going to get fat," Koska said.
He shrugged. "As long as I can still kick ass that's fine with me." He looked at them. "Like remember Boba Fett?" Axe had only seen him for like two seconds since he hadn't been with them when they had captured Moff Gideon. "He kicks ass."
"Boba Fett's an idiot," Koska said. "You're lucky you didn't have to spend that much time with him."
"Still he knows how to fight," Axe offered.
"He's not even Mandalorian," Koska said. And this went on for awhile, but at least they stopped paying attention to Din and Din didn't pay as much attention to them. They weren't out much longer and soon went back to the ship.
There Din could spend more time alone if he wanted, but he was in such a good mood about Grogu coming back that he did spend it with the others. Or rather Koska and Axe. He didn't know where Bo was. Axe told them so more dad jokes and they played Sabacc. Bo even joined them with a couple games.
Din wasn't good at it.
"You're lucky we're not actually betting anything, Djarin," Axe said. "Because you would be in trouble. Even my ba'buir's better than you."
Koska smirked. "That isn't saying anything. My ba'buir is ruthless when it comes to this game. She's gone against the best. She even played against Lando Calrissian and she would have beat him, but he's a cheater."
Din had no idea who that was, but what else was new.
"Maybe we should gamble after all," Axe said. He grinned at them and laced his fingers on the table.
"You don't have anything worth anything," Koska said. "I don't want any of you half full Tihaar. It's probably mostly spit at this time."
"And we're not going to play strip Sabacc," Bo said, ending her silence. "I told you that last time and the time before and so you don't need to suggest it now."
Yeah, no way that Din was going to play that.
"It'll be fun," Axe said. "And now we have Din so it'll be even better. I mean I think that you two would like that—"
"No strip Sabaac," Bo said, ending what he was saying.
"But Bo-Katan. It'll be fun and if you're worried about the clans finding out, they won't. Hell, they've probably done stuff like this too. Everyone does."
"I'm not worried about that." She rolled her eyes. "What if our ship is attacked?"
"Then we'll put our clothes back on or… I don't know. We don't really need them unless they try and take the ship."
"No strip Sabaac."
Koska laughed and leaned back in her chair.
"One day I'll convince you all to play," Axe said. "Trust me. It'll be fun and the loser could have to… I don't know, do a dance."
"I think we all have enough trauma without seeing you naked and dancing." Bo smiled slightly.
Koska laughed. "Yeah, I might have to throw myself off the ship."
Axe just grinned.
"Hey, Bo-Katan?" Axe asked as they dealt cards for a game of Sabacc that wouldn't have anyone getting naked.
"Yes?" Bo asked, looking at her cards.
"So you knew Pre Vizsla?" Axe asked. Din glared at the thought of Pre Vizsla but Bo didn't react at all. "Since you were both in Death Watch."
"Vizsla was the leader of Death Watch, but I knew him."
"You know what he should have named a kid? Post Vizsla."
Koska groaned.
"It's not my fault, Koska. We have the Dadolorian here." Axe motioned to Din. "And his presence makes me do this."
Bo smirked. She put her cards on the table so they still couldn't see what it is was. "All I know is now the galaxy is living in a Post Vizsla era. At least Post Pre Vizsla."
There was silence and then Din actually laughed as did the other two.
"That's cold," Axe said, but he laughed harder.
And that was that.
-scene break-
Much to Axe's obvious dismay, they didn't play it. And they didn't the next days even.
"If we don't play it now, we won't be able to until Grogu leaves," Axe said. He smiled and laughed.
"Doesn't make a difference since we're not playing it ever," Bo said.
"Yeah, I'm not playing that," Din said.
Axe sighed dramatically.
Eventually the days passed and they finally were going to be able to pick up Grogu. They were meeting on Jakku. Right away Din thought the planet looked like Tatooine, except without its signature two suns. Koska and Axe ended up staying on the ship. Axe didn't say why, but he said it was a surprise. Din was worried to say the least.
"You know I can leave if you want," Bo said as the two of them waited for Grogu and the Jedi Luke Skywalker. They sat on a bench next to each other. A few people stared at them, probably surprised to see Mandalorians. After all the galaxy was huge and after the purge there was even less of them. "I know you probably want quality time with your son."
"The Jedi will be here too though and if he brings anyone," Din said with a shrug. He didn't care who was here. He just wanted to see Grogu again. He had missed him more than he imagined he could miss anyone. Even the things about Grogu that had been hard to deal with, like when he wouldn't listen to him and would get into mischief seemed endearing to Din now.
"Still," Bo said. She smiled slightly. "I bet he's excited to see you."
"Not as excited as I am to see him." Because that wouldn't be possible. And Din had something for Grogu. Something he should have given him before.
They didn't have to wait much longer. Luke Skywalker showed up just five minutes later with a small boy with dark hair who kept itching his arm and more importantly Grogu was there.
As soon as Din saw him, he grinned and stood up. He wanted to hug the kid and never let go. The kid… Grogu… He was actually here. Grogu ran over to Din and he picked him up in his arms. He was finally reunited with the kid. He felt tears forming and he let them fall. He had his helmet on, but it wouldn't have mattered either way.
"Kid, I missed you so much," Din said, hugging him tightly.
Grogu made a small noise that almost sounded like a word. Maybe he was getting closer to talking. Maybe he would talk when he was with Din the next few weeks.
"I told you that we'd see each other again. I promised," he said. He put Grogu on the ground and then knelt down to his level. "And I have something for you." He took out the small ball and showed it to Grogu who grabbed it right away. "You can keep this always. Maybe one day if you make a fancy laser sword—"
"Lightsaber," the other kid said.
"Ben…" Luke said.
Ben sighed and studied them before itching his face this time. "But it is called lightsaber." Ben sneezed and then rubbed his nose. The kid didn't actually look well. His eyes were red and his voice sounded like he was getting over something. He must have had a cold.
"Maybe you can have it be part of your lightsaber," Din said. He ruffled the tiny bit of hair Grogu had.
Grogu ran the ball between his fingers and Din could tell that he was happy about this.
"Grogu has missed you a lot," Luke Skywalker said. "And I thought since I'm taking Ben to see his parents you could see Grogu." He looked down at Ben. "I just wish Ben was feeling better."
"I'm fine now." Ben wiped at his nose again. After that he itched his arm.
"Don't worry. Grogu didn't get sick," Luke said.
"It's not fair," Ben pouted. "Being sick…" He rubbed his nose, causing snot to get on his arm. "Is the worst." That was when Ben started coughing.
"Are you sure you're okay?" Din asked him. The kid sounded really sick. Grogu was staring at him, but then went back to looking at Din.
Ben nodded and sniffled before itching even more.
"So you're actually Luke Skywalker," Bo-Katan said, ending her silence. "I think I met your father once."
Luke Skywalker's eyes widened for less than a second. "You did…"
"You knew Grandpa?" Ben asked. He sneezed again. "What was he like?"
"Yes, just once so I don't know too much about him. It sounded like he was a good Jedi and soldier," Bo-Katan said. "He trained my friend Ahsoka. She was devastated over what happened to him."
Luke's eyes widened again and this time he didn't hide it. Weird. "What happened to him?"
Bo's eyes darkened. "How the Jedi were killed by the Empire."
Luke's reaction returned to normal after that.
"You should meet Ahsoka if you want to hear more about him," Bo said. "The two of them were really close."
"I wanna know," Ben said, still sniffling. He itched some more.
"Stop itching, Ben," Luke said.
Ben rolled his eyes and then bit at an itch instead.
They didn't say much else, but before they left, Luke looked at them. "Don't worry. I really don't think Ben is contagious anymore and Grogu didn't get it. He probably already had it before."
"We're not worried about a cold," Bo said and Din nodded. Nothing worried him right now. He was just happy to be back with Grogu.
Even if Ben was itching a lot.
-Scene Break-
But it turned out Luke Skywalker was wrong. The next day all of them except Grogu were horribly sick.
Luckily, they had Grogu and he knew just how to help his wonderful dad and his dad's friends. He would help them not just feel better but would also make the ship and everything on it more beautiful.
Dad would be so proud.
