Carlos sat on his bed, typing away on his laptop with Dude next to him. They had been in Auradon for six months, and each of them had begun to adjust to their new lives there. Everyone did not hate them anymore, and they were beginning to be accepted, but Carlos still had reservations about that. He wanted so badly to ask Jane to cotillon, but he worried she would laugh in his face; never wanting to get close to a villain kid. He was snapped out of his thoughts when Mal rushed into his room and locked the door. He could hear paparazzi outside trying to talk to her. She paced back and forth in a panic trying to calm down. The news was on again covering her and Ben's meeting with Aladdin and Jasmine. Everything was getting too much for her, but she stopped when her eyes glowed bright green.
"Whoa." Carlos sat his laptop aside and got up from his bed. "Mal, are you okay?"
Her eyes still shined bright as she stared at the boy in front of her. "Don't you ever miss it, Carlos? Pushing people around, making everyone afraid of you?"
His face hardened. "You're thinking of my mother. I was usually on the other end of the yelling and pushing. I don't think I was ever really cut out to be evil."
"Maybe you should have been." She steps closer to him, making eye contact.
"Mal, what are you doing? What's wrong with you?" Carlos backed away a little, but connected with the end of his bed.
He could not break eye contact with the girl causing him to freeze in place. His head began to fill with terrible thoughts. There were voices telling him to do evil things. Mal smiled at him and stepped closer.
"I have big plans for Auradon."
Carlos tried fighting the evil thoughts in his head. Mal blinked and he broke out of her stare.
"No! What is this?" He held his head in his hands, shaking it back and forth. "I'm not listening to this. I'm telling Ben!"
Carlos made a break for the door, but Mal pulled him back with a wave of her hand, throwing him onto his bed. Dude began to bark at her, but she ignored him and held Carlos down, leaning in close.
"If you tell anyone about his, I'll take Dude to the Isle, and personally deliver him to your mother."
Carlos' eyes widened. "N-No, please Mal, I won't tell anyone okay. I swear I won't, just don't hurt him. Whatever you need I'll help. I'll do whatever you want me to."
Mal smirked and patted him on the head. "Good boy."
Carlos flinched at the touch, he hated when people did that.
"I'll need you soon." With that, Mal left the room.
Carlos stayed in place, terrified at what just happened. Mal was evil, and now he had all these evil thoughts whispering things to him. What was he going to do? He looked at Dude, who stared at him with worried brown eyes from across the room. Carlos was about to make his way over there to pet the dog as reassurance when whispers began to flood in.
"Take the dog."
"Skin it."
"Make it into earmuffs."
"No!" Carlos backed away from Dude only to make the dog get up and come closer to him. He sensed his worry. "Stay, Dude!"
The dog stopped and tilted his head to the side. He had to get out of there, he could not risk hurting the one thing in the world that loved him. He rushed out of the room trying to get the voices to stop. More whispers flooded in as he walked down the hall. Whispers telling him hurt people, steal, and other terrible things.
"Make them suffer."
"Make them pay."
Carlos stopped in the middle of the hallway silently fighting off the thoughts when Chad walked by and gave him an odd look. The voices stopped when Carlos glared at the Prince.
"What are you looking at, Charming?" He marched up to him like he was ready to pounce.
Chad was caught off guard by this and looked down at the boy. "What?"
"You were looking at me." He shoved him against the wall. "Don't do it again."
"Hey man, what's your problem?" Chad shoved him back much lighter, only to get distance between them.
"You are. Stay out of my way." Carlos shoved past him, leaving Chad confused.
Mal had been watching with a smile forming on her face when Chad walked over to her.
"I think you need to keep your friend in check."
Mal kept her vicious smile. "You know Chad, I think he has the right idea." She roughly patted him on the chest before leaving.
Chad rubbed his chest where she hit him and watched her walk away. "Freaks." He shook his head and went the opposite direction.
At dinner Carlos was quiet. Every sudden move or loud noise made him jump and he seemed to be off in his own thoughts. Evie was watching him close from across the table. He had yet to touch his food, only occasionally pushing it back and forth on his plate. She leaned in closer.
"Are you alright?"
Carlos' head snapped up; a twinge of fear in his eyes apparent. "Fine."
Evie was about to push when Jane came over.
"Hey guys." She smiled and waved.
Carlos tensed. He liked Jane, and could hear the voices getting louder. He worried he would ruin any chance he had with her by staying, so he abruptly stood up.
"I have to go." He ran off shoving someone out of his away with no apologies.
"Is he okay?" Jane sat down where Carlos had been sitting with worry.
Evie too looked worried. "I don't know." She turned to Jay. "Will you talk to him later?"
Jay rolled his eyes, but agreed. "Sure."
That night Carlos was nowhere to be found. Jay had been looking for him after dinner, but was not sure where the boy had gone. He went back to their room, but also found it empty. Jay was not alarmed though, Carlos often spent late nights in the library studying, and would sometimes come back after he was already asleep. Since Evie asked him, Jay did make a point to himself to stay up extra late so he could speak to his roommate when he returned, but soon enough sleep overtook him and he missed his friend coming back in.
Carlos had waited on purpose not to go back to the room. He could not face Jay when they were alone. He worried he would spill everything to him, and he had no idea what Mal would do when she was found out. Instead of having to discover what her plans were for the gang, he waited. Long enough for Jay to either fall asleep, or be too tired to care. When he opened the door to their room, he was relieved to see Jay asleep. Carlos climbed into bed and pulled the sheets over his head. He could not sleep, not with all the thoughts in his head. He could almost hear his mother in them, screaming at him and telling him what to do. Carlos had no idea why this was happening, but he could not figure out a way to fix it.
When the sunlight began to fill the room, Carlos saw that as his sign to go ahead and get up. He changed clothes, grabbed his backpack and left the room before Jay woke up. When the door shut, Jay sat up in bed and immediately noticed Carlos' was empty. He could tell it had been slept in, usually Carlos kept it neat and clean, but his sheets were turned over, he never left and unmade bed. Jay figured Carlos had just left, but knew the boy was avoiding him. He sighed as he got up and got ready for class.
Carlos was trying to push the thoughts and voices out of his head. The evil feedling he was getting inside was starting to become overwhelming. He was sitting in the back of chemistry having an internal struggle. He was not sure if anyone noticed his going slightly insane, but at this point he did not really care. Everyone thought he was going to be crazy like his mother anyway, he heard the way some of the Auradon Kids talked. Not everyone had excepted them still, and probably never would. They whispered, sometimes they said things straight to the Villain Kids, but usually they ignored them. Right now, Carlos was having trouble ignoring anything. He needed to give into an impulse soon or else he thought he might explode. They were about to do an experiment, and the teacher had everyone huddled around a work station to show them what to do. Carlos was in the back of the group and used this distraction to switch a few labels around on the chemicals. When everyone returned to their seats, Carlos did his experiment like he was supposed to, keeping an eye on the lab station diagonal from him. It did not take long for a flash to occur causing everyone to scream. Smoke began to emerge from the bottles, and a hissing sound made everyone back away. The chemicals were eating through the lab station.
"Alright, alright, everyone clear the room! It's okay." The professor ushered everyone out of the room, perplexed at the incident that occurred.
A smirk appeared on Carlos' face as he watched everyone rush out of the room in a panic. It felt really good to be bad again. When he left the classroom, Carlos realized the voices had stopped. His head was quiet and he let out a sigh of relief. That solace only lasted a couple of hours though, because soon good thoughts began to poke through.
"What is someone got hurt?"
If he was melting desks now, what would he do in the future? This could not happen again; he could not give into the voices. If he did someone could really get hurt.
