Lava surrounds them, the burning ember searing holes into their tunics and burning their skins. Their respective bloods pumping, a growing sense of inevitability surrounds them. Master and apprentice standing against one another in combat, no way around the fact this had to end in the others demise. For what lay after for the living was anyone's guess. In the case of one of them he believed it better if both perished in the lava so neither would have to live with the mental anguish.
"I have failed you, Anakin." He confesses. "I have failed you."
"I should have known the Jedi could not hav even trusted. You of all people deceiving me for all these years." Anakin's voice trembles despite the attempt to mask it with aggression.
"I only wanted what was best for you. I have never lied to you." Obi-Wan tries to maintain calm. "My master never lied to me, I'd never do something he didn't do."
Though he did not say his name, Obi-Wan managed to trigger a memory of a long lost friend. Qui-Gon Jinn initially was supposed to mentor Anakin in the Jedi arts. Growing up alone with nothing to call his own, Qui-Gon saw something in the little boy from Tatooine.
If the Jedi were lying him, and his master does that mean Qui-Gon too was guilty of this. It's been so long since he reflected on his first master. Seeing the doubt in his apprentice's eyes, Obi-Wan retracted his weapon. The blue blade returning to the confines of its hilt. Perplexed, Anakin stood idle his weapon still drawn.
"You're my brother, Anakin. We all care about you." Hearing this, Skywalker retracts his weapon also. Obi-Wan slowly approaches his apprentice and Anakin allows himself to be drawn in to a hug.
"I'm sorry, master. I love you." The blood red blade ignites right through Obi-Wan's torso, sending his body into a state of shock. His eyes wide conveying a "how could you?"
"I have to do what must be done for me and the universe." Was the last words the Jedi Knight heard before he collapsed into a puddle of his own blood. The life gone from his body. Anakin lowered his head, soaking in what he had just done. Mere moments ago he lusted to stab his blade through his former master. Now that it happened he felt an unfamiliar coldness.
Returning to the landing platform, he saw his wife still laid on the ground. Through all the commotion he forgot what transpired between them. Hurriedly, he picks her up and places her into the ship where they fly off in hopes of finding a doctor. Anakin senses his wife is in labor.
He passed by many planets, deeming all of them ill-prepared to handle a woman prematurely entering labor. Coruscant having the most technologically advanced medical equipment gave him a brief sense of emotional security. They took her away in a gurney and ordered him to give her space. The aggressive Skywalker decided to reluctantly let the medical droids whisk her away. As he watches her through the glass window, her eyes yet to have opened.
Never the praying man, Anakin said a quiet hymn in hopes of reversing his fortunes. Believing all he did to bring about peace, by expunging the Jedi cancer, the all mighty would deem him worthy of his miracles.
But he felt the life force from her escaping. The cold and calculating medical droids actually showed freight as Padmé's conditions declined by the minute. Having enough watching his wife creep into the other side, he barges into the room and despite vehement orders to leave he kneels besides her pleading for her to remain amongst the living.
But it was no use. The light had faded from her eyes. Unable to form words, her pale face could barely focus on her husband. Anakin squeezes her hand tighter, his mumbles turn silent and tears begin to fall from his eyes. When her heart rate went flat the deed was done. The children made it out of the womb, unfortunately they were declared dead. Turns out she was carrying twins.
He didn't even react to the news on top of his wife's passing. Glancing down at his hip seeing his Jedi weapon, the source of all his grief. He felt nothing towards it. Disconnecting it from his belt he lays it next to Padmé before giving her a parting kiss. "I'm sorry. I failed you." He walks out into the rainfall, heading he knows not wear.
