Intoxicating.
Typical of her kind to use the word when describing their meal, which was the next unfortunate soul who was probably out there on their own stumbling drunk along the alleys. It has always been easier to target unsuspecting prey in bars and clubs after all where the majority are too drowned in alcohol to notice the danger they were in. Fortunately for them, she didn't hunt like most of her people do.
"Give me your wallet," hissed the man who had his arm against the wall, trapping a poor defenseless girl below him as he raised a knife at her neck. The girl let out a whimper as she fumbled with her bag.
"P–please, don't hur—"
"Shut up and give me the wallet!"
The man was an imbecile. He could have just taken the whole bag from her grasp and run away like the coward that he is, surely the blonde girl wouldn't even dare put up a fight considering her position, but instead he opted to threaten her who was already tearing up in fear.
Above them was a scoff, coming from an old woman who had the same bored look in those eyes of hers for the past four hundred years.
Well, it was hard to be treated as such especially when you're stuck in a quite young-looking body.
"That's not a nice way to treat a lady," she said, expressing her disappointment with a long sigh after silently and gracefully landing behind them. The thief wasn't even given the chance to face the intruder when he was so easily flung away from the cowering girl as if he weighed nothing.
"Go home," she instructed the other girl, before turning back to the man who fell unconscious right after hitting the opposite wall. As much as she liked a good chase, not that any normal person can outrun her, she didn't feel like playing with her food at the moment.
"T–thank you," Sasagawa Kyoko said meekly as she wiped away some tears and slowly pulled herself up. How the other girl managed to get the attacker off of her in one swift motion was a mystery, still, Kyoko was grateful that she came at the nick of the time. "We should call the police..."
Her savior glanced at her, a contemplating look gracing those pretty features, before she sent her a sweet smile. "Don't worry, I got this. You go run along now, it's getting late."
"Are you sure? How about you?"
The girl released a grunt that only she herself could hear. Her thirst was getting unbearable and all she wanted to do was sink her teeth in that soft and pulsing flesh.
"I'll be fine, you should really go home." She tried her best to shoo the other girl away with her steady tone. The scene would soon become very unsightly and the last thing she needed was another witness screaming mad crazy once she loses her composure from hunger. "I will call the police, I promise," she added for good meaure.
Seemingly satisfied with her answer, Kyoko bowed graciously at the stranger. "Okay, please be careful!"
And then she was gone.
The girl didn't miss the sincerity in her voice though, making her lips curl upwards in amusement. She had saved dozens of people from the hands of filthy mongrels in the past without so much as receiving any kind of gratitude because they were too busy running for their lives, not that it mattered much to her. Still, she couldn't help but smile at the thought of getting thanks for acting on her primal instincts. Shaking her head, she hastily dragged the man further into the dark alley where only a few would hear his dying breaths.
Intoxicating.
To her, it wasn't just the irresistible scent of their blood.
It was also the short span of mortality in human beings that had captivated her throughout the ages, and it always will. After all, it was a great reminder that she used to be like them once.
