Chapter 31
Almost undeterred Murdoch stood up as the inspector touched his hand tightly.
-It has a very hard jaw.
-I know.
At that moment the detective sensed the terrible smell of death that was around him. At least five men lay dead at various points in the extended room.
-Toronto's corrupt police have ended the problems they had with the Black Hand -Thomas told the detective-. Literally speaking.
The comment caused William to approach Joe Falcone's body. He immediately made the sign of the cross as he closed the mafioso's eyes.
-I warned him. Who was the other man who was with Decker?
-An old acquaintance of his. Former police station inspector number 1 Matthew Leland. As if traveling on a time ship
Murdoch went back to his beginnings as a policeman in Toronto. Leland was the police inspector who reported for his violent behavior in the case against Michael Cudmore. He still remembered the violence reflected on Miss Gardiner's face.
From that moment on, Leland's career plummeted because of alcohol and excesses. When he was expelled from the police several months later he disappeared from Toronto as if he were a ghost.
-Leland...
-He has been preparing his assault on crime for several years. His connection to Decker has been decisive. He knows so much about the slums of this city that they have allowed him to deceive a man like Falcone Jr. He never lived up to his father.
At that moment Murdoch rushed to the door where the two corrupt policemen had fled.
-I forbad you automatically make any decision. He is suspended from employment and salary until everything is resolved. Stop!
Ignoring Inspector William's instructions, he went out into the street to meet the Don River. They were only five minutes ahead of him. I had two options. So he decided to follow the bank of the river that led him directly to Lake Ontario. When the inspector and George also left the premises they saw two men approaching from the warehouse area.
-Stop there!
-Watts -the detective shouted, going down to where they were-. With former chief curator Percival Gilles.
-Wow. Welcome to the party.
-Where is Murdoch?
-Looking for Decker and Leland. In the direction of Lake Ontario.
-Matthew Leland? -Asked Gilles shaking his head-. What an immune garbage.
-Let's not waste any more time -Thomas said, taking the gun gilles offered him-. Betsy. I guess they've gotten Slorach into this whole thing. You and I look for Murdoch.
-It wouldn't be better...
-Nope! You have disobeyed my last order. I have to talk several things very seriously with that man.
-I understand.
-Watts. Crabtree. Keep going upriver. Perhaps those two vermin have separated. They will remain on the struggles of the Don until they find another way out. Right now the darkness of the area is your best ally. They won't risk the open field until dawn.
Yes sir.
