Wow, 4,575 words in one chapter. Longest chapter I'm ever going to write. So, I have made my decision on what will happen and you people aren't going to like it. Neither will book me. Anyway, I kinda skipped a lot of parts so if you totally hate me for it then... tell me and I might go back and write SOME of it.

Chapter 5

The next day I saw Sophie walk out with her only shirt that wasn't black on. It was yellow and brown. I followed her to the lawn and asked, "So, how long do you think before Fitz realizes you like him?"

"What do you mean?" Sophie asked.

"Sophie. I got you that shirt 4 months ago and you haven't worn it once until today," I told her, "and, I have been hearing your thoughts for 7 years. I think I know my twin sister well enough."

"Uggh." Sophie groaned. I looked over at the slightly faded soccer field still on the road.

I looked over at our neighbor Mr. Forkle. He has been there as long as I can remember. I can remember too. He was messing with his gnomes like usual.

"Looking for someone?" asked Forkle when he saw me staring.

"No, we came out here to see if the smoke got any better. I guess not." I lied. I coughed to add extra effect.

I could tell from his thoughts that he didn't believe us, "You kids, always up to something." The old man always smelled like feet. It was kinda nauseating over the sickly sweet smell of the smoke. I had to be nice though. He was the one who called 911 when Sophie hit her head.

"You girls should go inside before the smoke gives you girls one of those headaches you are always com-" but he was cut off by a loud yapping. A small dog ran up to where I was standing and jumped on my leg.

I bent down and scooped it up as a blonde man with spandex jogging shorts came up and said while panting, "Thank you. She is my sister's dog and she hates me." Then he thought about what he said and was like, "Not my sister - the dog."

I found it strange that I couldn't hear his thoughts. The dog in my arms was trembling and pressing further and further into my side as the man came closer. Why is it so scared?

"Would you be willing to carry it back to my sister's house? It is just a few blocks away and she seems to like you way more than she likes me," the man said.

"She most certainly will not!" thundered Mr. Forkle before I could open my mouth, "Sophie, Dawn, go inside" - then he turned to the jogger - "and you, get out of here right now or I am calling the police!"

"I wasn't asking you-" The jogger started.

"I don't care. Get. Away. From. Them. NOW!" Mr. Forkle yelled.

The dog's yapping grew louder as the guy inched closer to me and Sophie. Sophie was standing next to me and giving both Mr. Forkle and the guy weird looks. Something about the guy's expression made me think he was gonna snatch me or Sophie.

Before I could say anything Mr. Forkle stepped between me and the jogger and even if he is old if he stands to his full height he can be pretty intimidating.

They stared each other down for a few minutes before the jogger backed down. Forkle turned to me and said, "Let the dog go." I set the dog down and it ran away as fast as if it were lightning. The jogger glared at the three of us before jogging away after the dog.

"It's fine now. If I see him again I will call the police." Mr. Forkle said.

I nodded, "Thanks."

Mr. Forkle snorted and mumbled a sentence that started with you kids as he returned to his garden gnomes. "You girls better get inside."

"Right." we said at the same time.

As soon as we walked back up the path and closed the front door we had so many questions. Why couldn't we hear his thoughts? Is he an elf? Did Fitz send him?

When we got to school there was still no sign of Fitz. He might be waiting until there are no people around. I don't know though. After the dog incident I kinda want eyewitnesses around. Unless the jogger was sent to get Sophie and me…

I saw him! Sophie thought frantically.

WHO!?

The jogger!

Uh…. I personally think that that guy is creepy.

Yeah, I have a question…

Mhm?

Why do you think Fitz was put off when he saw the two of us?

I don't know, but… I do know that we need to go to class! If we miss mom will kill us!

All of a sudden I felt Sophie geet yanked away and I almost screamed but stopped when I realised who it was.

"Do you have any idea what you put us through?" Sophie hissed.

"So you missed me?" Fitz smirked.

Hahahaha, he caught you! I thought.

Shut up!

Not a chance, not your pants.

That was a really bad idea, I don't know why I listened to you.

Hey! Those jeans look cool tie-dyed!

You are the only one that ever wears them, of course you think that!

Shut up!

"Hello?" Fitz asked, for some reason he seemed really put off.

"More like you left us alone with a ton of unanswered questions," I hissed.

"And then this guy showed up and tried to grab us!" Sophie continued.

"And-"

"Woah woah waoh, wait. What guy?" Fitz stopped me before I could add on to the list.

"I don't know. Some creepy blonde guy tried to trick me and Sophie with a dog and we couldn't hear his thoughts so we thought he might be an elf. And-"

"Okay, slow down, no one else knows you are here but my dad, and he sent me to get you."

"Then why couldn't we hear his thoughts?" Sophie challenged.

"Some humans have quieter minds." Fitz said, he was eyeing the teacher who was watching us and said, "We can't leap with people around."

"LEAP?" me and Sophie shrieked as we were pulled behind the english building.

"We can't skip class again, they will call our parents!" I told him.

"And, after yesterday I think our mom might strangle us." Sophe added.

"This is important, you have to come with me."

"Why?" Me and Sophie asked.

"Just… trust me."

We both dug our feet into the grass so Fitz couldn't pull us any farther.

Ok, a lot has happened. Like, a lot. First of all, Sophie had an allergic reaction after Dex gave her something with libmium in it. So, yeah apparently we are both allergic to this strange elf thing that somehow we came into contact with when we were 9… yeah don't understand that at all.

Then there was the entire thing with the splotcher tournament, somehow there were three people left so Sophie went up against Fitz while I watched and I was going to face the loser. It actually didn't work that way because Sophie and Fitz found out a way to knock each other out. And when the energy's hit each other they rebounded but also they fanned out hitting me and flinging me into the wall. Yep, so fun.

There's also the matter of where I stayed and all that because… well they weren't expecting a second girl. Also, I really hate this place. Everyone keeps expecting me and Sophie to be idiots just because we were raised by humans and ARE TWINS! Plus they keep expecting us to be powerless which is crap!

Anyway, the worst thing: well… let me go into more depth.

"I can't believe you haven't figured it out already." Stina said, sliding into our table. Me, Sophie, and Biana were studying for final exams.

"Go away Stina." I groaned, flipping the page in my alchemy notebook. At least I didn't have Lady Galvin. The bad thing I do have though… is elementalism. I have this really creepy teacher named Sir Krackpot. I am not kidding, that is his real name. Anyway, on my first day I got zapped by lightning.

In the end me and Sophie ran into each other in the hallway and met this guy named Keefe. He is actually kind of an idiot but he's also cute(in Sophie's mind anyway. I like girls. I highly doubt that is accepted in the lost cities though).

Anyway, back to the convo with Stina.

"HA! You guys really don't know the reason Princess Biana really became friends with you?" Stina asked.

What is she talking about? Sophie thought. Ever since we learned how to keep our thoughts to ourselves we have been keeping a lot of secrets from each other. This was probably the first time in weeks I had been able to hear what Sophie had been thinking(take that back, that morning we had both opened our thoughts that morning when we tried to save the human world from creepy fire called the everblaze and all that nonsense.)

Calm down. I whispered.

"What is she talking about?" Sophie asked.

I gripped her hand and squeezed.

Biana's face was white. One of the few things I remember from my past life is what happened here. Sadly, other than that I don't remember much else.

"Nothing. It isn't true." Biana said.

"Isn't true? You know when you started hanging out with the human twins me and Maruca became good friends." Stina sent Biana a knowing smile.

Dawn.

Yeah?

Alden told her to be friends with us didn't he

I don't know. I hope not.

"Her dad told her to be friends with you guys just so he could keep an eye on you. Funny isn't it?" Stina asked.

Both me and Sophie stood up at the same time.

"Is it true?" Sophie asked.

"I-"

"Is it true?" I repeated.

Biana's face flooded with all the blood that hadn't been flowing and turned bright red.

"Come on Sophie." I grabbed her arm and our stuff with the other hand and we both fled the room.

We ran into Fitz and Keefe in the hall.

"Woah, guys what's wrong?" asked FItz.

"What's wrong? Don't act like you care!" Sophie said.

I felt the blood rush to my face as all of Sophie's thoughts filled my head.

I tried to push past Keefe and Fitz but Keefe grabbed my arm. I gave him a death glare and yanked as hard as possible, "Leave us alone."

"What did Biana say?" Fitz asked.

"Uh, you might want to leave them alone. They are pretty mad right now." Keefe pulled Fitz back

Both me and Sophie continued on our way, ignoring them.

I raised my home crystal and both me and Sophie dumped our school stuff in our room before running down to the cave in the cliff.

WHY? Why would she do that? Why would Alden do that? Sophie raged.

I don't know. I whispered. Had something just moved?

I just can't believe I thought we had finally found a friend after the stupid twin thing. Sophie sighed.

Sophie, someone is here with us. At that moment two people reached up and covered our mouths and noses with rags covered in a drug.

Dawn? Sophie asked before passing out. I haven't passed out yet because I held my breath the minute I heard movement behind me but that won't last much longer. Sophie's mind is completely open to me though wich is clouding my thoughts because of the sedative she inhaled.

"Sophie? Dawn? You in there?" came a voice recognized as DEx's.

OH shoot.

"RUN DEX!" I screamed into his mind. Then I fake went limp and they tossed me and sophie on a wall before taking off my rag and racing up to sedate Dex.

I quickly opened my eyes and reached for Sophie. I realised immediately that it was pointless because I can't levitate very well much less with Sophie unconscious. I layed back down just in time for me to hear the thumbs coming down the stairs to the cave and feel them toss DEx's limp body against me.

"I thought you said there was only one!" said one idiot.

"They said there was only one! Since when are there twins?"

"And who is this other kid? I thought she came down here alone!"

Well… I have nothing to say to that except that they are idiots. I mean seriously? Me and Sophie may be identical but we have very different mindsets-ish. And they clearly don't pay enough attention if they didn't see that time all three of us were down here and Sophie caught my tunic on fire with one of her alchemy concoctions.

SHAME ON YOU FOR WATCHING US IN THE FIRST PLACE!

All of a sudden I felt myself go weightless as I was lifted up. I did my best to look limp and keep my eyelids from moving as they yanked our registry pendants from our necks.

I felt a rough hand grab my arm and flashed a look before closing my eyes immediately hoping he didn't notice. The scar on his hand…

I felt the sensation of being leaped which wasn't very helpful to my "pretend to be sedated" plan.

All of a sudden for a second I couldn't breathe and then I could again but the smell filling my nose was must and mold.

I felt myself get thrown roughly to the ground of a cell before I heard the bars clang. They hadn't even gagged me. Sophie's sedated mid was still flooding my senses as I really fell under the power of the drug.

When I awoke I opened my eyes and looked at the cell's bars. Across from me I could see Dex.

He looked like he was asleep but I couldn't be sure.

"Dex!" I hissed in his mind

His eyes shot open as he looked towards me.

"Pretend to be asleep. We can talk mentaly." I transmitted.

"Where are we?" asked Dex.

"What makes you think I know?" I asked.

"You were awake when they brought us here."

"How do you know that?"

"You aren't the only one who can hold their breath Dawn."

"Whatever. I'm gonna try to find Sophie."

"I can't believe you are a telepath."

"Sophie is too!"

"What? Really? That is so cool. Do you have super secret conversations like this?"

"Dex! Not the point, the point is we have been captured with no way out!"

All of a sudden a man walked in and bangged something against the bars of my cell, "Stop transmitting, princess. It isn't going to help you much."

All of a sudden he blasted me with whatever it was in his hand and I heard an ear splitting scream. It took me a few seconds to realise the scream was coming from me before the blast stopped leaving me paralized on the ground.

I used all of my strength to open my eyes and see Dex at the bars of his cage staring at me in horror. Do I really look that bad? It hurts everywhere, yes.

"Calm down Dex. I don't want him to blast you too." I transmitted weakly before falling unconscious.

The next time I woke up I could still feel the sting of the blast. I looked around to see a dark outline on the floor of Dex's cell. I used my mind to find him.

"Dex," I transmitted as quietly as possible.

"He said that anything we do they will do something to Sophie or you. When you were blasted by the medler I wasn't sure if you would wake up." Dex's voice whispered back.

"I'm here, we'll get through this. I promise. Somehow." I said just as quietly as before.

Dawn Sophie's voice washed over me, call for help.

"Dex, I'm going to break the connection. I'm about to do something and I don't want them to connect it to you. Understand?"

"What are you gong to do?" Dex asked suspiciously.

I disconnected our minds before spreading my consciousness and far out as I possibly could and then some. I had a massive headache but I continued until my breaking point and then I searched for someone in particular. Biana.

"HELP!" I said as loud as I possibly could. I could almost conjure a picture in my mind of Biana, sitting on her huge princess bed looking at the drawing I had given her for midterms. She sucked in a breath and glanced around, "WE HAVE BEEN TAKEN HOSTA-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!"

That last part was because in the middle of my sentence I felt a searing heat and opened my eyes to find I was in the center of a circle of fire.

I closed my eyes hoping that when I opened then there wouldn't be flames. That I wouldn't be trapped.

It didn't work.

I heard Dex shouting to me, "Dawn! Are you okay?"

I knew I couldn't respond if they would do the same to Dex. My transmission got me into this.

I focused on a simple spot in the flames and used telekinesis to part the flames and stumbled forward.

Long story short, I burned my hands on the bars.

I can never describe what I saw, actually I'm about to. I saw a face. It was grinning at me cruelly as it watched the flames wrap around me. It's shattered blue eyes watching in amusement.

I could see Dex's horror stricken face.

"What… do you… want?" I coughed out. I was about to suffocate from the smoke. I couldn't bend down to get under it or I would burn.

"What is so special about you and your sister." He growled. His gravelly voice grated against my earlobes turning into ringing like the crackle of the flames before I could hear it.

I felt faint so I had to lean on the bars no matter how hot they were, "What… did… you say?" I asked choking on my own coughs.

"You heard me, you little wench." he growled.

Why is the world spinning? I wondered before I passed out.

When I woke up I was no longer in my cell but in the street. I was being carried. I twisted and groaned at the pain that shot up my arms at the abrupt movement.

"Don't move." a voice commanded. Why did he sound like Mr. Forkle?

"I can walk." I protested, opening my eyes just a little bit and wincing at the bright light that penetrated my eyes.

"You have serious burns up your arms and legs. I highly doubt that." I turned to see what wasn't actually Forkle but Sir Astin the teacher of the universe. Wow. Why does he sound like Forkle kind of?

"Sir Astin?" I asked.

He looked at me and and a nodding motion with his head and before mouthing, "Tell no one."

He set me, Sophie, and Dex down and I felt Dex stir.

I reached out to grab him but thought better of it when the needles came back to my arms.

"Dex," I said.

He twisted but couldn't seem to move.

"Dex, don't worry about it. We're out. We're gonna be ok." I whispered.

He didn't move though. Almost as if he didn't trust my voice.

I flopped over onto my other side and sa that Astin was force feeding Sophie something. It was this murky brown liquid.

When he saw me looking he said, "I am activating an ability. It should help you guys. I'm afraid I can't do much else."

"That's ok. Thank you for getting us out. If you hadn't I don't know what would have happened." I told him.

I saw Sophie grow stressed ike she was in pain and scramble to my knees ignoring the pain and asking, "What's happening to her?"

"It should heal her injuries. They aren't as severe as yours but she still has some."

Then he pulled out a syringe which had three different layers(it was so weird, it was like water and oil the way they stayed separate.), "I only have the dose for her. Hopefully she can handle them."

"She is unconscious, she would take them better than me." I responded in understanding.

Astin-that-sounds-like-forkle nodded before turning to Sophie. He placed the syringe over a vein in Sophie's neck and I tried not to wince as it went in. I clasped Sophie's hand and whispered, "You can do it Soph." Astin chanted the same thing over and over(except he said 'Sophie').

As her features relaxed I gave a small smile… then I saw my legs.

They were charred. I might have been able to see bone so it was amazing that I could support myself at all.

"Dawn, I need you to tell me exactly what you are feeling right now," said Astin.

"It is a mixture of extreme pain and deafening numbness, combined with the fact that I can only hear out of one ear." I said, snapping my burned fingers and wincing from the pain, next to my left ear.

"Lay down. I won't be able to do much for your legs but as long as the nerves stay frayed you shouldn't feel pain." Forkle said.

"Sounds good. Just tell me what stupid elixr I have to drink." I said laying down. I felt immediate relief all over my body.

"You aren't going to like the taste."

"I currently can't taste anything but ash and smoke so I bet it will be an improvement." I said. I bet this is how people that smoke feel. He handed me this bright pink vial and I almost gagged looking at it, "ok, now I'm not so sure." I drank it though.

After a few minutes my hands, arms, and everywhere else felt better. My arms were no longer red. My legs looked a little better. They were still covered in blood, and I had several layers of skin missing in some places but I looked a little better.

"Thanks." I said. I snapped next to my left ear and found that I still couldn't hear.

"Yeah, I don't have anything for your ear."

"It's ok."

"This should help you find your way back. You are in Paris." Astin lifted a path finder to the light and leaped(lept?) away.

I carried Dex and Sophie into an alley so no one would see us(it took a while and if either of them had new scrapes... *looks around*... it wasn't me.)

After watching them for a little while, I fell asleep.

I woke up yelling, "I'm not going to school!" then cracked up laughing at Dex's face, "sorry."

"Were you dreaming about school?"he asked.

"Nope."

"Then- you know what. Nevrmind. Who was that guy that rescued us?" Dex asked.

"How much do you remember?" I asked.

I remember waking up and talking to you and then this guy blasted you with a medler and then you passed out ad then when you woke up we talked again and that time you said you were gonna try something but then this guy came and set your cell on fire.

"I couldn't tell if you were alive until you stepped up to the bars but then you got hurt so I didn't really know what to do. I was drugged after that and when I woke up I heard you telling me we were out but I Wasn't sure i it was realy or not. Then I heard you and that other guy telling Sophie stuff."

"Yeah, I remember it in a lot more vivid detail." I told him.

"How are your legs? You were standing directly on flames."

I looked down to see that I had no shoes on, my leggings were scorched and falling apart and there were patches without any skin. It all looked relatively charred.

"Not good. But, the guy said my nerves are frayed so I can't feel any pain." I gave a forced smile and thumbs up.

"How's Sophie?"

"Guy gave her some new abilities somehow and healed her injuries." I responded.

"How?" Dex asked.

"I don't know. So, do you know how to play lemonade?" I asked. His face was amazing.

I spent about an hour teaching him lemonade, don't break the glass, and elevator.

"Those are so weird." Dex said, waving his hands around from all the clapping games.

I grabbed the paper Astin handed to me and read it out loud, "'Paris. Alexandre. Lanterns.' great. We are supposed to leave this place using 3 words."

That was when Sophie chose to wake up. She flailed around a little before realising we weren't at the place anymore.

"Dawn?" she asked when she saw me. Then she rushed over and hugged me.

"You're ok." I whispered.

"You are ok. I heard you scream!" Sophie said pulling back and looking me over.

"Well, mom(!) I'm fine. Mystery guy patched us up." I said.

"Your legs say otherwise." Sophie said, looking over the burns.

"It's fine. Just some nerve damage, tissue damage. I bet Elwin can fix it." I shrugged it off, "Hey, we are in PAris, do you have any idea where we could get access to the internet? All I can think of i a cafe but we have to buy stuff if we do that."

Dex pointed at the bank across the street, "I got money from over there while you were asleep."

My mouth dropped open, "You robbed a bank?"

"No, I walked up to the machine and told it we needed money."

"You stole from an ATM?" I asked.

"I just told you…"

"Is there an ability that makes you good with techie things?" Sophie interrupted.

"Yeah," then his face dropped, "I bet I'm a technopath."

"Oh, sounds cool!" I said.

"It is like one of the worst abilities." DEx complained.

"WE can worry about that later. What did you do with the money?" I asked.

He handed me a pile of money.

"Dude, how much did you steal?" I asked.

"For the last time I-"

"Yeah, yeah, we gotta go."

WE walked to the cafe and on the way Sophie ran into a man!

"Regarde où tu vas, gamin!" the man yelled at her.

"je suis désolé!" Sophie called back.

"Since when do you know french?" I stared.

"I don't." Sophie said, confused.

Dex snapped, "You're a polyglot!"(I am sad to say that for the longest time I thought is said polygot)

"A poly-what-now?" me and Sophie asked at the same time. I was blocking my thoughts from Sophie at that moment. I probably will for a while, I don't want her to see what happened to me.

"She can speak any language she hears." Dex said.

"Wow, that is cool, Speak in this language: הי"

"פארוואס האט איר נאָר זאָגן הי?" Sophie responded.

"Yeah I have no idea what you just said. I only knew the one word." I let out a hysterical laugh.

"That means you can talk to the people at the cafeteria!" DEx said.

"Did you just call it…?" I burst out laughing with Sophie close behind.

"Sorry, it's called a cafe." We walked to the one across the street.

"Sophie, you are probably the most decent looking search up lantern alexandre, and bring m a croissant." I said.

"Why aren't you coming?"

"Look at my leg! You can literally see muscle! I can't go in looking like this!"

"Fine, but if you see any guys in black cloaks come in and find us," said Sophie. She then pulled Dex into the cafe as I stood outside whistling.
