Title: Play With Me?
Genre: Family
Rating: K
Additional Notes: I had a lot of fun writing this chapter! I hope you all enjoy it :3
It was a beautiful day in the Mushroom Kingdom, and Bubbles had gone to the toy store. She was bored of playing with her toy Octi every single day; he WAS her best friend of her lifetime for sure, but she also knew that she couldn't rely on him any time she had issues. So, she decided to go to the toy store (with Mario and Luigi's permission of course; they trust her and her sisters since they did have super powers and could handle anything, but that didn't mean the plumbers shouldn't be worried), looked around at the variety of toys from dolls to bicycles to balls.
However, she stopped at a ball that really stood out; a pink ball with a unicorn plastered on it. It was smiling down at her, practically begging her to buy it. That was more than enough to convince the pig tailed girl to fly up to the ball, grab it, and put it on the counter and buy it from the toad who was working here. "I'd like to buy this please!" she said.
The toad didn't even bother to look up from his comic until he heard a squeaky voice. He rolled his eyes and looked at the pig tailed girl. "Will that be all?" he asked in a monotone voice.
"Yes yes!"
"Would you like to-"
"No! I can carry it!"
The worker rolled his eyes once more and Bubbles gave him the money needed for the ball. She thanked him and went on her way, excited to show off her new ball and see who wanted to play with her. Who would she ask, though? There weren't many kids her age. And it had only been some time after the girls came to live with the Mario Brothers. But that wasn't important right now; who was she going to ask?
When she got home, she rushed to Blossom who was busy reading her book in her room. Feeling giddy and excited to play with at least one person, she poked her pink sister repeatedly until Blossom finally looked at Bubbles. "Did you need something, Bubbles?" she asked.
The pig tailed girl's eyes lit up as she took a big breath and asked, "Play with me?"
Blossom didn't really want to at the moment, but she also knew how sensitive Bubbles was, so she didn't want to upset her. She knew perfectly well how upset she got when she's left alone with no one. So the only option left for the pink clad was to make up an excuse. "Oh Bubbles, I wish I could, but I'm reading this book at the moment! I'll play with you later on when I'm finished, okay?"
She let out a small smile hoping Bubbles wouldn't feel sad. Luckily, the pig tailed clad understood and nodded. "Okay!"
She left Blossom alone in her room as the pink girl turned back to her book. I just hope Bubbles can understand... She thought to herself.
Next was Buttercup. The lime clad just loved sports and playing catch, so Bubbles thought, "Why not Buttercup? I'm sure she'd love to play!" So she rushed over to her rough and tough sister and waited until Buttercup was done beating the punching bag and flew into her room saying her name multiple times all excitedly.
It lasted for 30 seconds before Buttercup got irritated and turned to her sister quickly. "WHAT?! What is it, Bubbs?" Buttercup asked. "I got another 2 sets of punchin' I need to do!"
"Wanna play? I got a new ball," Bubbles said holding up the pink ball for the lime girl to see. She looked at the unicorn and cringed.
"A unicorn? Really, Bubbles? That's for babies."
"I know, but I was wondering if you wanted to, um... play with me?"
Buttercup rolled her eyes. "No, Bubbles. I don't have time for your baby games right now. Now if you'll excuse me, I got me a punching bag to beat up!"
Dejected, Bubbles walked out of Buttercup's room, leaving her to her training.
Last up was Mario. In his room, he was signing a contract of the latest updates of the Super Smash Brothers tournament, and there was only half of the papers done on his desk. Nonetheless, Bubbles decided to go up to him and poke his shoulder until he looked down at the pigtailed girl. "Huh? Oh hey, Bubbles! Did you need-a something?"
Bubbles' face lit up and she spoke super fast that Mario had to ask her to slow down. She spoke a little bit slower this time. "Well, I got this cool new ball, and I asked Blossom and Buttercup to play with me, but they both said no... so basically, you're my second-to-last hope. Do you wanna play with me?"
Mario gave her a sad smile. "Aww, I would-a love to, Bubbles, but I've got all this paperwork that needs to be done...! If I don't get it in by next week, I'll be out of this year's tournament. I'm-a so sorry."
Her smile deflated and she looked down at the ground. Mario noticed that and tilted her chin a bit. "I-a promise, as soon as I get-a this paperwork done, I'll play with you, okay?"
"O-oh, of course...! No trouble at all! I know you're awfully busy with this stuff. Maybe later?"
"Of course."
That seemed to lift her spirits up a little, but it wasn't enough to make her entirely happy. She left Mario to look over his paperwork as she looked back one last time, and then flew away for real.
Later that day, Bubbles was sitting against the fence, sadly bouncing her ball. Some tears came out of her eyes and landed straight on the grass as she sniffled and sighed. Why did nobody want to play with her? Was she not fun anymore...?
Meanwhile in the front yard, Luigi had just gotten done with tending to his garden of flowers and then he noticed Bubbles leaning onto his shoulder with the pink ball in her hands. The green plumber felt sorry for the girl and then patted her head. "Awww, what's wrong, Bubbles?" he asked.
"Nobody wants to play with me," Bubbles answered dejectedly. "I asked my sisters, then Mario, but they all said no. I even asked some of the toad kids in our neighborhood, but they either ran away from me or... or ignore me."
Luigi's heart went out to the poor girl. However, he was still new at this whole father thing. Sure, he's had some babysitting experience with Baby Mario and Baby Luigi, and the girls for sure, but sometimes he didn't know how to handle the rambunctious energy or the high emotions with the kids. He wasn't even prepared for such things like that.
After a few seconds, the green plumber took a deep breath and looked at Bubbles with a soft smile. "Well... I'm all done with my gardening. How about you and I play catch with that ball of yours, huh?"
Bubbles' face lit up fully and she let out a loud gasp. "Really?"
"Of course," Luigi said as he put his gardening tools away. "Now, let's-a go play some ball."
She flew around Luigi's head in happiness, making the green clad dizzy for a second before shaking it off.
Meanwhile, Mario had finished his last set of papers in his room. Wiping the sweat off of his forehead, he looked at the full contract in satisfaction for a good minute or two before getting up and getting himself a glass of water. As he finished his drink, he decided to look out the window, wondering if Bubbles was doing okay. He felt bad about declining the girl's offer, so he would've loved to play; however, adult responsibilities can be quite a challenge at times.
Out the window he saw Bubbles and Luigi playing catch with one another. Mario's younger twin looked genuinely happy, the happiest he's been in however long it's been. He threw the ball to the pig tailed girl and she flew right up to the ball and caught it in a flash. She then used her strength and threw the ball at Luigi, prompting the nervous green man to jump up as high as he could and catch it. Bubbles giggled and hugged Luigi for his amazing stunt.
"Mario, what are you doing?"
Blossom's voice caught Mario's attention and he got startled. When he looked back, he saw her and Buttercup floating behind him. "Mama mia, girls, you scared me!" Mario said. "What are you doing here?"
The two girls looked at each other than looked back at Mario. "We were looking for Bubbles to see if she was doing okay. I wanted to see if she still wanted to play," Blossom answered.
"And Blossom was gonna make me apologize for being 'mean' to her," Buttercup chimed in.
Mario smiled softly at the girls then gestured towards the window. "Well, you girls don't need to worry. I just saw Bubbles outside playing with Luigi if you wanna go out there and play!"
Buttercup rushed outside as fast as she could, and Blossom lingered behind, looking at Mario. "You'll come out and play with us too, right?" she asked.
"Oh yeah, I will! Go on ahead, I'm-a be out in just a few minutes, okay?" Mario replied.
The bow haired girl nodded and went outside, leaving the plumber alone with his thoughts. He could see the two girls talking with Bubbles and Luigi, with the pigtailed girl's face lighting up with joy and his brother gesturing the former to join in on the game. The two girls happily obliged and Bubbles threw the ball to Buttercup, who threw it to Blossom, who then threw it at Luigi.
Mario shook his head at himself smiling. What did Luigi and I do to deserve such perfect little girls? He thought to himself as he went outside to meet the others.
A/N: Yaaaay, Bubbles finally has someone to play with! Honestly I liked writing this because Blossom may be my favorite character, but Bubbles is super adorable! So it was nice writing about her x3 Remember, don't hesitate to send me ideas for one-shots!
