JJ and Emily soared through their second and final year at Georgetown, surrounded by friends and laughter for the majority. Rossi had picked up one of JJ's classes and it was nice to see another familiar face as he often brought their past cases into discussion with the rest of the students. She felt welcomed by the older man and there was a small promise left with her that he would be seeing her a lot more in the coming years.
Aaron Hotchner had announced his upcoming leave from teaching to take up the unit chief position in the BAU. It made JJ happy to know that she not only had one, but three of her professors to keep watch over her and guide her the right way when she eventually made her way into the unit.
She still worked with the team, despite her increase in studying and efforts towards her final exams. Emily was proud of her, and she told her that fact every chance she got – it made JJ smile and Emily loved to see the effect it had on her girlfriend. Her internship was full of excitement and learning, and Derek had recently applied for the opening they had that year for the same program. He was eager to get his foot in the door before they graduated, giving himself some stability with his future career.
Penelope finished her degree earlier than the rest of the little friend group, and Spencer had taken on his first PhD. Pen settled well in the tech analysis department and had already been offered a full-time position for when she graduated with the rest of the students later that spring. She would primarily be attached to the BAU, on the recommendations of Hotch, Emily, Rossi and Gideon. At that she was overjoyed.
Spencer was still too young to join the FBI, but there were promises of him being able to intern earlier than most other candidates – he would soon catch up to his older friends and make the most of his time between furthering his education. He had made a home in D.C, even though his mother was still in Vegas, she was safe in a facility that saw to her every need and capability. He visited her at every chance he got, even though it made him sad to see her decline and turn into someone he didn't recognise.
Still, the year went by faster than they thought it would. JJ was eager, putting in every ounce of effort she could into her relationship with Emily. The pair had settled into a domesticated bliss, Zenzi was happy in her new home and then came the talks of their future together. JJ had agreed on the fact that she would one day, very much, like to marry Emily and even start a family together. They had kept that a secret from their friends and family, not needing any extra pressure added to them as they neared the final months of their college careers.
When exams hit, JJ was unusually relaxed, but she knew that she could battle them with ease. She wasn't like Spencer and his extraordinary mind, but she felt more confident than ever as she sat down to begin her first exam and it all just flowed, a never-ending connection from her brain to the ink that dried on the paper with every sentence she wrote.
She was intelligent – she knew this, and so did many others. She had this. She was finally going to get what she'd wanted after all these years of dreaming.
As graduation neared them, so did results day and JJ started getting nervous. Her final exams had been a breeze, but that only filled her with more apprehension on the fact that she shouldn't have found them that easy. Emily tried her hardest to reassure her, knowing just how intelligent and gifted she was. JJ was easily her smartest student, if you didn't count Spencer Reid and his ability to remember everything.
The day finally came when the notification saying her results had been published came through her emails, and JJ was a wreck. She wasn't one to get nauseous at this kind of thing, but as she sat in front of her laptop, she felt another wave hit her and she just wanted to run. Out came a loud groan and Emily's touch on her shoulder tightened.
"Baby, it's going to be a great result." Emily pressed a kiss to JJ's head and ran her hand over tense muscle.
"I ca- I can't open it Em. Can you do it for me?" JJ peered up at her with teary eyes. Emily felt her heart clench in her chest, wishing she could make JJ feel better in that moment.
"If you want me too." Emily nodded with a warm smile and a calming gaze.
"Please." JJ handed over the laptop, freeing her hands to clutch to her stomach. Emily was facing her, but she couldn't see the screen and that both eased her somewhat and made things worse at the same time. She took in a deep breath and dropped to her knees. It was the only position she could be in, for fear that she'd either run or pass out. At least this way, she could fall the short distance if she did faint and running would require just that little bit more effort.
"Come on Jennifer, this is going to be good. Whatever happens, you've still got me, and you can still get into the FBI – you just might have to work your way up to get to the BAU." Emily reassured her, even if it wasn't what JJ wanted to hear.
"Can you open them? I'm gonna puke if you don't hurry up, I need to know." JJ rushed, trying to steady her erratic behaviour.
"Ready?" Emily let her fingers run over the mousepad as she went to click the link on the email.
"Do it." JJ nodded; her face steeled as she watched Emily's fingers move. She heard the clicks on the keyboard, obviously putting in the password for the site and waited as it loaded on the screen. Her face was uncharacteristically unreadable, and it made JJ's breath hitch.
"Well?!"
"Oh Jen-" Emily choked on her words slightly, meeting JJ's eyes with her own teary ones.
"What did I get?!" JJ stood up quickly.
"Only 92%!" Emily squealed.
"Fuck off!" JJ jumped behind Emily, reading for herself the results of her degree. "Holy shit."
"I'm so proud of you baby."
"Emily!" JJ let out that first sob, grabbing the laptop from the brunette's lap and threw it beside them. She launched herself at Emily, sending them both tumbling backwards. JJ lips found Emily's with ease, passionate as nerves turned into desire in seconds.
"Jen-" Emily whimpered against the blonde's mouth.
"I wanna celebrate." JJ pulled back breathless.
"You need to find Pen, ring Derek and Spence and your mom - and then we can celebrate." Emily chuckled.
"All day?"
"Anything and everything for you baby."
"Miss Jareau." Strauss's voice was low and commanding as she stepped in the BAU bullpen. The one free desk had been assigned to the blonde for the entirety of her internship, opposite Emily and next to Elle.
"Good morning Chief Strauss." JJ swallowed hard as her nerves surrounded her. She had been lucky to not have many encounters with the section chief, knowing that she had a reputation for being a hardass and ruthless at times.
"We need to talk. My office in 15?" Strauss looked at her in wait.
"Of course." JJ nodded. Strauss made a hasty exit, glaring at the other agents on her way out. Emily looked over at JJ to see the internal panic setting in.
"Jen, she probably just wants to talk about your application." Emily gave her a reassuring smile.
"Yeah, she's not always a bitch." Elle chimed in. Emily scoffed in response to her comment, knowing that non-bitchy Strauss was a rarity.
"What if she cuts me out of the BAU? Where am I gonna go then?" JJ buried her face in her hands as she tried to push through the worrying.
"She can't - we've had more success in cases in the last 6 months with you on the team than we have in years Jayje. You'll be fine." Elle took her turn to reassure the young blonde.
"Jennifer, please make yourself comfortable – we have a lot to discuss." Strauss stood as JJ entered her office and waved her hand towards the chairs opposite her.
"Oh, you can call me JJ, Ma'am." JJ smiled slightly. "Uh, am I in trouble?"
"Erin, if we're foregoing formalities. And no, you are not." Erin let out a small laugh which calmed JJ somewhat. The only people that called the chief by her first name were Hotch when he was pissed and Rossi, because they had history.
"Ohkay." JJ breathe a sigh of relief.
"I hear you were in the top three of the state for your degree, congratulations JJ. You must be proud of yourself." Erin started.
"I am - I couldn't have done it with Agent Prentiss' help though." JJ smiled at the thought of her girlfriend.
"Ah yes, Emily Prentiss is a very intelligent woman. Good to have someone like that at your disposal." Erin nodded. "Anyway, the reason I needed to talk to you was about your application."
"Go ahead Erin." JJ used the older blonde's first name and saw her shoulders tighten. JJ hid her smirk well as she watched the chief fumble with a file in her hands.
"We usually recruit people that have completed a 4-year degree. You are an exception to this requirement considering the work you have put in over the past several months with your internship." Erin cleared her throat quietly and opened the file. "You have excellent feedback from all your professors at Georgetown, as well as Agents Gideon and Greenaway, amongst several other agents that work in this building."
"You've liaised well with families when you have travelled for cases with the team, and I received a letter offering gratitude and recommendation from the NYPD special victim's unit lieutenant after your case with them last month." Erin handed her the letter, letting JJ take a moment to read through the words.
"Oh- wow." JJ's eyes went wide, she hadn't expected such a positive response for essentially a rookie profiler.
"JJ this is a really good thing." Erin chuckled easily.
"So, what does this mean?" JJ looked up at her, trying to figure out what the older woman was thinking or going to say.
"It means that your application to the BAU has been accepted and you start official academy training in two weeks." Erin told her and JJ had to fight to contain her joy.
"I get a gun, an- and a badge?"
"You have a psych evaluation booked with the department shrink tomorrow morning and a fitness test in the afternoon. As long as you pass your training – yes, you get a gun and badge." Erin smiled.
The woman was smiling... that was a first for JJ to see.
"Your training mentor is Agent Prentiss, who will oversee your probationary period once you are free of the academy. I've heard she's one of the best, so I have no concerns of any issues there."
"T-thank you so much Chief Strauss."
"Congratulations - Probationary Agent Jareau." Erin smiled once again and stood to hand JJ her training file and paperwork she needed to fill out. "We are looking forward to having you on the team."
"I've gotta go tell Emily and Elle, thank you." JJ grinned at the chief and made her chuckle again. The new blood and enthusiasm would be good for the unit, and she knew she had made the best choice in overriding JJ's application.
"You are dismissed. I will check in with the unit next week – take care of yourself JJ."
"Thank you, Ma'am." JJ nodded, trying to keep a professional air about her as she forced herself not to run out of the woman's office.
JJ walked slowly through the glass doors of the BAU bullpen, finding her team and her best friend sitting in wait of her arrival.
"So, what did she say?" Emily stood up; she'd obviously been fretting.
JJ put it on, biting her bottom lip as if to display sadness.
"No - she can't have cut you from the program." Elle huffed, slamming a hand down on her desk.
"I'm sorry Jayje – you can try again next recruitment, or maybe go for a different department and work your way up?" Penelope gave her a sympathetic smile.
"What's the point?" JJ shrugged.
"Oh, come on honey, it's not all bad." Emily quickly wrapped JJ into a hug.
"No, it's not." JJ exhaled, returning the embrace for a few seconds before taking a step back.
"What did she have to say?" Elle asked.
"Well - she explained that applicants need to have completed a 4-year degree in order to be recruited."
"Yeah, and? You've been working here for months, and you've done far better than most recruits ever could." Elle rolled her eyes.
"Yeah, I know!" JJ returned with an overdramatic response. "So, I guess it's a good thing that it was overthrown."
"Wait, what?" Emily looked at her bemusedly.
"Uh, I'm now a probationary agent..." JJ smirked.
"Fuck off..." Elle stood from her chair quickly, sending it flying backwards into the desk behind hers.
"Academy training starts in two weeks." JJ grinned.
Emily was as stunned as JJ looked minutes before when she was told the news herself. Long arms grabbed her in for another warm embrace, tightening furiously around her as she laughed.
"Nice one Jareau, congrats." Elle patted JJ on the back with a grin.
"Jennifer! I was almost ready to go tear Strauss a new one for not recruiting you – you're too sneaky." Emily scowled at her playfully when she pulled away.
"Well, I had the best teacher." JJ chuckled.
"I'm so happy for you Jayje, well done sweetie." Penelope rushed over and gave her a hug.
"Thanks PG. Now we've just gotta get Derek and Spence in here and the gang will be back together!"
"Who's your mentor?" Elle asked.
"One of the FBI's finest apparently." JJ bit the inside of her cheek, playing into it far too much. "Some woman named Agent Prentiss."
"Some woman?!" Emily scoffed. "The best woman - I'm the finest for a reason."
"Oh, I know." JJ winked.
"Alright horndogs, calm it in the bullpen." Elle rolled her eyes again.
"File room?" Emily's eyes glistened as she joked.
JJ finished her academy training at the top of her class, which was no surprise to anyone really. The remainder of her graduation day was spent with the BAU and was full of celebration, even Hotch had pitched in to buy her a cake and card as congratulations for completing her training.
Hotch had already made plans as the new unit chief, to take his team down to the firing range to run through some tactical strategies and get JJ suited up with a made to measure vest and get her assigned her weapon of choice.
"Alright, agent crack shot here is going to fire her new gun to christen it, then we will get the MP5's out with blanks and go through the hostage scenario." Hotch announced, earning a loud laugh from JJ at her new nickname and Emily rolled her eyes. JJ had chosen the Glock 26 as her sidearm, but she was more excited to get her hands on the rifle, even if it were firing blanks only.
"Agent crack shot, your firing awaits." Emily laughed, turning to wink at her girlfriend in jest as she cleared the way for JJ to stand in the shooting pen. The firing range at Quantico was shared with the Navy yard up the road, so was utilised by both NCIS agents and the naval and marine academy next to the FBI academy. It expanded way farther than JJ had imagined, not having been allowed down here until her training had been completed. JJ fired her whole magazine in the pen, shooting in quick succession at the target and landing them dead center, and then 3 to the head for good measure.
"Nice one Jayje." Elle cackled, high fiving the young blonde when she was finished.
"I didn't know you were that good." Hotch let a small smirk cross his face when he eyed up the target.
"She had a great teacher." Emily butt in.
"Yes, I did." JJ took her turn to wink at the brunette and watched the slight flush cover her girlfriend's cheeks.
"In that case, Agent Jareau - I want you on this instead of the MP5." Hotch beckoned her over to the window of the hut, where an agent behind handed him a cased weapon. "A lot of hostage situations will be planned out and armed with SWAT members, but in some cases, we will have point. Seeing how good your aim is, I want you to try this."
JJ looked back at Emily and Elle in bemusement, confused as to why Hotch would want her doing something different.
"This, JJ, is a Remmington 700 sniper rifle. We have a certain specification – a military version that marine snipers can utilise on missions. This is the only one we have, so don't break it. I'm going to get Agent Kalo to take you up to the platform up there," Hotch pointed to the platform, only just visible to the agents on the ground. "Load in the rubber bullets and await my signal on the radio to begin. Understand?"
"Yes sir." JJ nodded – this was her moment to prove her sharp shooting skills in front of her new team and she was full of nerves.
"You'll do great, besides, it's only practice. The chances of you ever having to operate a sniper rifle in the field are minimal. We like to have at least one member of our team capable, but with myself and Prentiss it'll make three." Hotch reassured her with a pat on the back. "Kalo, take Jareau up please."
JJ took the case from Hotch and slung it over her shoulder, so it rested against her back, along with a few boxes of rubber bullets and followed the older agent out towards the towering steps. She climbed and climbed until she reached the higher platform. It was a good thing she wasn't scared of heights as she peered over the edge. She knew how to assemble a sniper rifle, they taught them in the academy, but she never thought she'd actually have to do it again.
The bipod snapped out quickly and she clicked the rifle in place once she'd loaded it. The scope was calibrated, and she looked through it. She could see everyone on the firing range, the two NCIS agents waiting for the alarm to sound to signal shooting restart again, Hotch and Elle, and then twisted just slightly to see Emily looking up at her. Emily gave her a little wave and a smile and JJ laughed to herself – she could even see down Emily's shirt...
"Agent Jareau, are you set up and ready?" Hotch's voice crackled through the radio she had clipped to her belt, reaching back to grab it and respond.
"Yes sir, ready and waiting." JJ returned quickly, watching them through the scope again.
"Well done. Remember this is only practice. There are 4 targets down here that are visible to you and that's what I want you to aim for." Hotch told her and she watched him clip his radio to his belt next to his handgun. She took a deep breath and closed in her sights on the targets he'd said about.
The alarm sounded for their practice scenario to start, and she watched the three agents filter across the field. Emily dropped to the floor, Hotch crouching down behind an old oil container and Elle behind a makeshift wall. JJ made aim, taking a deep breath and shot at the first two targets, hearing the clang as the bullets contacted them. She smiled to herself, listening to the other agents make their shots and hit their targets in quick succession before she then made for her remaining targets. Two more loud clangs told her she got them, and she pulled away from her weapon. The radio crackle startled her as she regained normal breathing.
"Nice job." Hotch praised. "Agent crack shot is going to stick." she heard Elle's voice in the background and couldn't help but laugh.
Once she had dismantled her weapon, she made her way back down and was met by her teammates.
"You got them all JJ, well done." Hotch smiled. "See Prentiss, told you she'd be fine."
"Yeah yeah, I know what she's capable of." Emily nodded and smiled at her girlfriend.
The cleaned up their mess and made their way back to their office. JJ finished off her day with her paperwork and sat down with Emily to fill out some of her mentor file that she had to complete in the next three months. When it was time to go home, they grabbed takeout and a bottle of fancy Italian wine to celebrate a successful finish to JJ's training with Penelope at home.
"So, we kinda need to talk about what happens now we're both armed and in the field." Emily started, picking up her wine glass from the coffee table in their house.
"Yeah, I wanted to ask you about something too." JJ smiled.
"Okay, mine's only quick so I'll just get it out there." Emily breathed and took a sip. "Obviously they know we are together, so we might not be paired up often, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. In situations like today, the hostage kind, you cannot let your feelings get in the way of your judgement."
"Yeah, I know Em."
"I know you know. I just don't want you going in guns a blazin' and making a fuck up. It's happened before, so what's to say it won't happen again." Emily gave her a look that said it all and JJ stifled her laugh.
"I've seen a hostage situation in real life, remember? I know what to do and what not to do. And I know until it happens and I'm armed and very much in it, I won't know what I'll do – especially if it you or one of our teammates." JJ shared with a soft frown because it was true, although she hoped it would never happen to them.
"There will be moments of misjudgement or weakness where you might want to disobey orders for the safety of yourself or others Jen – it's part of the job, but I just want you to be safe and not fuck around. I love you and you're the only person I've ever loved, and I want you to come home with me every night in one piece."
"I love you too, and the same goes for you. No hero acts or bullshit that puts you in danger – there's only one Emily Prentiss and I'd very much like her to stay alive." JJ chuckled, trying to make light of the conversation despite its seriousness. Emily did let out a little laugh before taking a sip of her wine and then facing JJ again.
"What did you want to ask me?" Emily asked with a tilt to her head.
"Hotch said you were sniper trained, was that from Interpol?"
"Yes - I had a few missions that required that kind of weaponry, so I was trained by a black ops sniper." Emily nodded. Suddenly, she felt cold at the memory of her past and bit down hard on her bottom lip.
"I have top-secret clearance now Emily, you can tell me if you want to. But I understand if you don't." JJ reached out for Emily's arm and the brunette flinched. What happened in her past that made her react that way? JJ thought.
"I can tell you; it doesn't put you in any danger because the people I dealt with are all dead. Even the worst one." Emily breathed heavily through her nose and licked her lips, anxious about retelling her tails from Interpol. "We need to go outside for this though - I need a cigarette."
"You smoke?" JJ looked at her with wide eyes.
"Only when I talk about this."
"Okay - let's go."
Emily informed JJ all about her past. With JTF-12 and Doyle – how he'd escaped prison just before she started her first year at Georgetown, how he'd killed off all but two members of her old team and how she had managed to apprehend and subdue him. She raised her shirt and showed JJ the scar the encounter had left, although JJ already knew it was there. The jagged and fading mark that had the blonde so intrigued from the moment she had laid eyes on Emily's naked form, that now had a dark and haunting story to it.
Emily felt relieved after that. The fact that Ian Doyle was dead and no longer taunting her made her life easier to live, especially with the closest person to her now knowing what she had to do for the sake of the mission. It took a huge weight off her shoulders and Emily felt free for the first time in years.
They had talked more about the dangers of the job and what it would mean if one of them got injured or even killed and they spent the night sobbing in each other's arms, promising that neither would purposefully put themselves in a position for it to happen.
JJ had time off before starting with the BAU as a probationary agent. The couple made a trip to Pennsylvania for the graduation celebrations and to reconnect with the family again after a hectic few months. Penelope, Derek and Spencer made their way up – secretly followed by Hotch and his wife Haley, and Elle. Unfortunately, Emily's parents were in Italy celebrating their anniversary so couldn't attend but promised to take both JJ and Emily out to celebrate the blonde's graduation.
The Jareau family farm was at full capacity when the evening entertainment got underway. Spencer made friends with all JJ's cousins, and Kate and Derek seemed to hit it off far too well in the hushed speak of mischievous plans. Penelope was quick to intervene and announced the arrival of the few surprise guests. JJ introduced her colleagues to her family members, whilst also welcoming the new addition to the family. A little boy named Joel, his parent's Juliette and Tom were excited to facetime everyone and share the news of the baby's arrival that morning.
JJ gasped as she set eyes on the small bundle on her phone screen. "Look at him!"
"He's beautiful guys, congratulations!" Emily shared her well wishes with the new parents.
"That's aunty Jayje and aunty Em Joel, they're the naughty ones so watch out." Juliette chuckled over the phone and Emily felt warmed by the title of being an aunt to the boy.
"Babe, I want one." JJ turned to look at Emily with a pout and puppy dog eyes.
"Yeah, well it's a little bit harder for us to get one honey. Unless we go steal him..." Emily wiggled her eyebrows playfully.
"No chance. He's barely cried since he came out, he's an angel." Tom chuckled.
"I'll give you babies, a lot of them if that's what you want." Emily kissed the top of JJ's head and wrapped her arms round the blonde's shoulders.
"Emily!" Derek shouted out, clanging a knife against his glass loudly from the other side of the yard.
"Guys, I'm handing you to Penny, she wants to see Joel." JJ and Emily both blew a kiss and then the phone was handed to Penelope, who cooed instantly over the baby still on screen.
"Don't go yet, you might wanna watch this." Penelope then whispered towards the phone and flipped the camera round so they could see what was about to happen.
"Come with me, I want to show you something." Emily tugged on JJ's hand when she got back from speaking to Derek.
"You thinkin' what I'm thinkin' Prentiss?" JJ winked at her girlfriend.
"Not a chance in hell baby." Emily laughed. She led JJ out of the house and round towards the barn, where a special someone was tucked away for the night. Already tacked up, Bowie was stood patiently awaiting her two favourite humans and nickered at their arrival.
"We're still taking her back to the house, aren't we?" JJ looked at Emily eagerly.
"We are, but she's got one last job to do here." Emily nodded, taking Bowie's reins and leading her out towards the field. "No gate jumping this time..." Emily scowled at JJ and watched the blonde jump up into the saddle.
JJ noticed the crowd that had gathered at the end of the yard, at the wall separating them from the field they just entered.
"Why are they all watching?" JJ asked.
"I don't know." Emily shrugged with a sly smile. JJ had no idea. "Go on, ride around. Take in the last of the Pennsylvania greenery before we take her to the big city."
"You're acting really weird tonight." JJ looked at her with a suspicious glare but turned Bowie away when Emily dismissed her with a wave of her hands. Emily walked over to the wall, reaching over to grab something out of Derek's hands and then turned to watch JJ trot round in circles with the mare. She was still in awe of the way they moved together and knew that she herself would have to find a horse so she could enjoy the special time with her girlfriend.
Minutes passed them by, and the light was fading fast, the cool November air swirled around them and made her shudder, snapping her back to reality.
"Jayje, come here baby." Emily beckoned the blonde over.
"What's up?" JJ asked, bringing Bowie to a halt.
"Off."
"Ohkay... do you wanna have a ride?" JJ asked again.
"No, I still need to show you something." Emily laughed quietly.
JJ dismounted and left Bowie where she was and approached Emily slowly. She still had a suspicious look on her face and was about to speak up about something when Emily interrupted her.
"You know I love you right?" It wasn't really a question, but Emily said it anyway.
"Of course, Em. I love you too." JJ let out a breathy laugh and leaned forwards to kiss Emily's cheek – wary that her entire family unit was stood watching.
"Good. Jennifer Jareau, I want you. Like forever- and I'm already screwing this up." Emily groaned, rubbing her eyebrow with the hand the wasn't tucked behind her back.
"Screwing what up?" JJ asked.
"I'm just gonna come out and say it, because I'll get to say what I really want to later without prying ears and eyes!" Emily turned to face the crowd and they all laughed.
"Em, you're being weird-"
"Jen, will you marry me?"
"W-what?!" JJ's eyes went wide, and even wider when Emily pulled out wooden box from behind her and opened it. The ring glistened in what light was left, in all its beauty with a silver band and a beautifully clear diamond sat in the middle, and there were a few hushed gasps from the group beside them.
"Marry me. I love you, and I don't want to waste another minute of my life calling you my girlfriend. I want to be able to call you my wife, mine forever Jennifer. I want to give you babies, an- and animals and everything you've ever wanted." Emily rushed, her anxiety getting the better of her. There was pure silence as Emily waited for an answer... then Bowie nickered and nudged JJ and made her snap out of whatever world she'd fallen into.
Then came the tears.
"Jen?"
"Yes - I'll marry you."
The remainder of the evening was seen out in true Jareau style, plenty of alcohol and raucous behaviour which also led to Bowie jumping over the yard wall and joining the family with the celebrations by eating what she could of Sandy's plants and the lawn. Hotch and Haley were child free for the weekend so took advantage by having a few drinks themselves – Elle went all out congratulating the couple's engagement and also found herself a new friend in the new Dr Reid.
"Spencer is cute." Elle whispered loudly to JJ.
"Yeah - he's also 18 so just go easy on him alright?" JJ returned with an eye roll, protective of her young friend.
"Hmm... legal." Elle shrugged and quickly disappeared from JJ's side. She jumped when she felt familiar arms wrap around her waist and pull her close.
"Em, jeez." JJ chuckled.
"Looks good huh?" Emily grinned behind her, leaving a kiss on the back of her neck.
"My ring? Why yes, it does." JJ held up her hand to admire it.
"Don't worry, I got you a simple one for work." Emily told her and JJ spun in her arms.
"You got me another one?" JJ looked stunned.
"Yeah, just a simple band with a little diamond." Emily shrugged with a smirk on her lips.
"Em!" JJ swatted at Emily's chest lightly. "You don't even have one yet."
"Yes actually, I do." Emily dipped her hand into her pocket and pulled out the silver band and held it up between them.
"Can I put it on you?" JJ asked with eagerness.
"Of course."
"I'll get you a nice, prettier looking one before we get married. Promise." JJ kissed Emily's cheek and slipped the ring onto the brunette's finger.
"Well, this matches your work one - I don't need big diamonds and shininess."
"I love you."
"I love you too Jennifer."
Monday morning, JJ had a meeting with Chief Strauss to get things in order and was then dismissed to start her first day as an agent. She made her way down to the BAU bullpen, the leather satchel Emily had bought her slung over one shoulder and a coffee cup in hand. She took a deep breath before opening the doors. Emily was already waiting for her, but the rest of the team were out of sight.
"You better get up to speed quick Agent Jareau, we've already got a wheels up and it's a doozy." Emily announced, go bag already in hand and waiting.
"Let's go, Agent Prentiss."
