Chapter 35!
The Old Scout Regiment Headquarters
A day had passed since Lorna had been ordered by Commander Erwin Smith to return to the old Scout Regiment headquarters where Eren had been inprisoned months ago, there was a private meeting being held there. Only a small group of scouts would be attending the meeting, only a few could be trusted for now until the plan was set in motion.
Lorna had arrived at her set destination just before dusk, the torches outside of the castle were already lit in their wall holders. There was hardly anyone around the courtyard, she had seen Armin feeding some horses with Mikasa. There was no sign of Eren. Jean Kirschtein had met Lorna by the entrance of the castle, he told her that Eren was waiting in the main Dining Hall with Levi.
Dismounting her horse she headed towards the main enterance and entered the castle, it had been sometime since she had stayed here. It hadn't changed at all, Lorna kept on walking until she arrived at the hall. She knocked on the old wooden door before she entered the room, she could see Eren sitting across from Levi. They were drinking tea or at least Levi was in his strange manner, Eren smiled when he saw his old friend.
" Lorna you made it!" Eren said.
" Sorry I'm late, I had to ride out here all by myself." Lorna said with a smile. " I didn't get my orders until this afternoon from our Commander, but I'm here now."
" Anyway, It's great to see you again!" Eren said.
" I'm happy to see that you're safe and well." Lorna said.
Lorna joined them at the dining table and sat down next to Eren, she had no idea how long it would be until Erwin showed up for the meeting. Lorna spoke to Eren and asked him how he had been, Levi on the other hand just listened in on their conversation while he sipped at his tea. It wasn't long before Erwin arrived at the hall with Hange and some other scouts, they all seemed on edge.
" Finailly..." Levi muttered.
" I'm sorry to have kept you waiting." Erwin said.
Everybody took a seat around the table and Lorna got her journel from her bag, she placed it down in front of her while she took a pencil from her pocket. She noticed Eren eyeing up her open journel, he seemed interested in what she had written. She turned to a fresh page and readied herself to make some notes while she looked over at Erwin, but it seemed like her assitance wouldn't be needed this evening.
" Lorna, would you mind leaving us to our meeting." Erwin said, his speaking tone was serious. " I will inform you about our plan in due course, you are needed else where in the headquarters. There are chores in the kitchen that need to be attended to before morning."
" Yes, sir!" Lorna said while she put her belongings back into her bag." Right away, sir. I'll get right on it!"
" Thank you, Lorna." Erwin said.
" Wait, I thought Lorna was going to be part of the escape plan too." Eren said
" She will be included, but for now her services are needed else where." Erwin said.
" What's up, Eren?" Levi asked before he took another sip of his tea. " Do you need her to hold your hand like a frightened child?"
" No!" Eren replied with a frown. " I just thought..."
" Lorna, you may take your leave now." Erwin said.
" Yes, sir." Lorna said.
Lorna left the hall and made her way to the kitchen, she felt quite disappointed that she wasn't allowed to stay for the meeting even if the day before Armin had told her about the plan. But she couldn't go against Erwin's orders, she did have a lot of work to complete in his office with the journal updating and now she had a kitchen to clean.
When she arrived at the kitchen Lorna put the clean pots away first and swept the floor, she then had to scoop potato peelings from the main kitchen's table. She had no idea who had made this mess, but whoever it was she would like to find them and explain to them about basic hygine in the kitchen.
After Lorna had finished she took her satchel bag from a chair and hurried out of the kitchen, she wanted to complete her documenting before midnight. Turning into the corridor where the meeting was being held she hurried along the corridor, she nearly tripped over her own two feet which caused her bag to slip from her shoulder. Lorna's bag opened as it hit the floor and all of the contense of her bag scattered around her, she couldn't believe what had just happened.
Lorna cursed beneath her breath while she got onto her hands and knees, she started to put everything back into her bag. One of her pencils decided to wedge it's self beneath the door of the hall, she tried to get it out with her fingers but it was stuck. She sighed deeply to herself and rested her forehead against the floor, she could hear Erwin's voice coming from the other side of the door.
Lorna tried not to listen in on their conversation, but her curiousity got the better of her. She pressed her ear against the door and listened careful, she knew she would get into a lot of trouble if she was caught eavesdropping from the corridor. She could hear muffled voices and something about the Female Titan, but without any warning the chairs inside the room scrapped against the wooden floor. It meant the meeting was over, she grabbed her bag from the floor and hurried along corridor. She didn't stop until she reached Erwin's office, she dared not look behind her in case anyone saw her.
Lorna entered Erwin's office and closed the door behind her, she took off her jacket before she ran over to her desk. She hung her jacket over the back of the chair and placed her journel on the desk, she tried to catch her breath before she sat down on her chair. Resting her chin on her hand she grabbed a pencil from her bag and opened up her journel, she began to write some notes down.
" And breath, no one saw you..." Lorna muttered.
The door of the office soon opened and Erwin walked inside, he looked very serious as always. Lorna gave him a quick smile and tucked some of her lose strands of hair behind her ear before she continued with her documenting, she just hoped no one had seen or heard her running away from the Dining Hall.
" Good evening sir, did the meeting go well?" Lorna asked.
" It went well enough." Erwin replied.
Lorna didn't even look up from her journal at him, she continued to write. She heard the door close behind him, she could hear his footsteps walking towards her desk. She still didn't look up from her journel, she could sense him standing in front of her desk. Lorna dared look at him until he placed one of her pencils down in front of her, it looked like the pencil that had been wedged underneath the hall's door.
" I believe this belongs to you." Erwin said before he walked over to his own desk and took his seat behind it. " You must have dropped it in the corridor, but something is bothering me."
" What is wrong, sir?" Lorna asked.
" Do you know anyone by the name of Annie Leonhart?" Erwin asked.
" Not that I recall, which redigement is she based with?" Lorna asked, she made eye contact with him. " Is she joining our group?"
" We believe she maybe the spy within our walls." Erwin replied while he wrote something down on a piece of paper. " All the evidence we have gathered, the information we have received is pointing to her. Armin believes she is the spy, the three dimensional maneuver gear she was using belonged to Marco Bodt. Also the Female Titan made no attempts to kill Armin on our expedition, I'm trusting his judgment."
Lorna listened to Erwin, he informed her that Annie was based within the inner walls. She was member of the Military Police, she was skilled and strong. But one piece of information surprised Lorna, it turned out that Annie Leonhart may in fact be the Female Titan. Lorna's eyes grew wide and she opened her mouth to speak, but no words left her lips. That meant that there was another person like Eren amongst them, she wasn't good like Eren since she had killed Levi's Squad.
" We have devised a plan to imprison her." Erwin said before he folded up the sheet of paper. " Eren, Armin and Mikasa will lead Annie into the trap, they plan to lure her to the underground tunnels of the Stohess District. There will scouts based around the district, they will be dressed like citizens. She will not escape us this time."
" It sounds dangerous..." Lorna said.
" Indeed, I'm not going to lie to you..." Erwin said, he made eye contact with her this time. " Lives will be lost, but we will succeed this time."
" I like your possivity, sir." Lorna said before she closed her journel. " But if you would please excuse me, I think my bed is calling my name."
" Get some rest, the next few days will be hectic." Erwin said.
" Goodnight, sir." Lorna said.
" Goodnight, Lorna." Erwin said.
Lorna tidied up her desk before she hung her bag over her shoulder, she then left Erwin's office. She made her way along the corridor, she had so many questions about Eren's escape plan. She turned left into another corridor and stopped when she saw Eren with Levi walking towards her. Eren was in shackles once again, he was on their side but he still had to sleep in the prison cell area for safety reasons. She stepped to one side and allowed them to pass, but Levi stopped Eren in front of her.
" We've got task for you in the morning." Levi said, his gaze was firmly set on her. " How are sewing skills?"
" Still good." Lorna replied. " The same really from my sock sewing days."
" I want you to meet Jean Kirschtein in the Dining Hall after breakfast." Levi said before he forced Eren to walk forward. " Don't be late, it's important."
" Okay, see you morning." Lorna said.
Lorna watched them both leave, she was left confused by Levi's odd request. She had only met Jean Kirschtein once outside of the castle when she had arrived here this evening, but she was left wondering why Levi had asked her about her sewing skills. She sighed to herself and continued to walk down the corridor, she knew her questions would be answered in the morning.
The Next Day
The next day Lorna had ate her breakfast with Levi and the other scouts, she had managed to have a brief conversation with Eren before he left with Erwin. He was determined to make Annie see the error of her ways, if that didn't work then she would be imprisoned by the Survey Corps. Lorna had concerns about the plan, she was worried about Eren and his friends safety. Especially Armin, he would be the one trying to convince Annie to help Eren to pass through the district's checkpoints safely before they escaped into the unknown.
Lorna soon learnt why her assistance had been called upon by Levi, she needed to altered some clothes Jean Kirschtein would be wearing. She had found the task peculiar until Armin updated her on the plan over breakfast, it turned out that Jean was going to be posing as Eren for the trial. By doing this it would leave the real Eren free to help in the final attempt to capture the Female Titan.
Jean and Eren both had similar eyes and demeanor, but Jean wasn't too happy with the part he would be playing in the plan. Jean had been complaining since Lorna began to alter his trouser's hem, he was beginning to get on Lorna's nerves. She had been left alone with him, the other scouts were elsewhere around the headquarters.
" I look nothing like that suicidal bastard..." Jean frowned.
" Will you please stay still!" Lorna said with a sigh. " I'm almost done, you've caused me to prick myself with this needle more than once!"
" Fine then, just hurry up!" Jean sighed.
" I would hurry if you stopped moving around!" Lorna said.
Lorna looked up at Jean, she could see that he was getting annoyed with her presence. His facial expression was sour and his eyes were full of anger, she was now beginning to see why he had been chosen to pretend to be Eren. She soon finished hemming his trousers and cut the cotton away with some scissors, she then told him she was done.
" Step down, Jean." Lorna said while she got to her feet. " Let me see how the trousers look on you."
Jean stepped down from the stool and stretched his hands above his head, he even checked out Lorna's hemming skills in a mirror one of the scouts had brought to the hall for Lorna to use. They had turned the dining table of the hall into a tailor station for her, they had given her everything she would need to complete her clothes altering task.
" Not bad, soldier." Jean said with a slight smirk. " Not bad at all."
" Thank you, it's been sometime since I've sewn or hemmed any kind of clothing." Lorna said before she began putting the sewing items away into a wooden box. " I just need to check how the wig looks on you, then you're free to leave."
" This seems like a step down from your given position." Jean said, he looked at her over his shoulder. " A correspondent of the scouts to a tailoress."
" I guess Captain Levi wanted me to use one of my many hidden talents instead." Lorna said while she looked at him. " I'm a secret sock repairer, don't tell anyone."
Lorna smiled when Jean erupted with laughter, he told her that he would take her secret to his grave with him. Lorna put most of the sewing items away and took the wig from a wooden head stand, the hair of the wig wasn't soft. She carried the wig over to Jean, she told him to keep still while she checked how it looked on him.
" This wig stinks like the horses stable!" Jean said.
" I think the wig is made from horse hair." Lorna said before she place it on his head. " It may get itchy, but it seems to fit perfectly. Just keep your head down, hide your face as much as possible when the government comes to take you into custody."
" I'll remember to do that, I wouldn't want to get mistaken for Eren." Jean said, he crossed his arm. " It's enough that I have to pose as him."
Lorna listened to Jean complaining once again, he really hated Eren. She had no idea why, but it seemed like Jean and Eren had known each other for years. She ran her fingers through the wig's hair and styled it slightly with a hairbrush, it would have to do for the task in hand. She removed the wig from Jean's head and told him that he could leave now, but she did tell him before he left that he should change into some other clothes when he got to his room.
Placing the wig back on the wooden head stand Lorna removed the lid from a hat box, but her attention was soon drawn to the opening door of the hall. She saw Erwin entering the room, he looked at ease and not under pressure for once. The door closed behind him, his voice broke the silence between them while he approached her.
" Jean's clothes have been adjusted, he just left if you're looking for him." Lorna said while she turned her full attention back to the wig. " I'm finished here, I'll tidy up and then return to my duties."
" Your duties won't be needed for the rest of the day." Erwin said. " We will be leaving for the Stohess District before midnight, I want you to make sure everything is updated in your journal before then. I suggest you also get some rest, you will need it."
" Yes, sir." Lorna said.
Lorna listened to Erwin's footsteps, the door of the hall soon opened and closed behind him. She continued to tidy the table and gather the odd pieces of cotton, the table was soon clear when the wig was placed into the hat box. It seemed like the escape plan would be set in motion sooner than she had thought, she just hoped Eren and his friend managed to catch Annie without any issues.
