"Have you ever been in love?" Mor asked, hand supporting her chin.
Rhysand's heart was beating too fast, anxious to know the answer, but also afraid. He wasn't sure why he was so scared. Maybe because if Celeana had indeed been in love, was she still enamored? Being so young she couldn't have developed those feelings too long ago and if she still felt that way...the very thought tugged at his heart in an unpleasant way.
"Yes," Celeana's response was nothing but a whisper.
And just like that, Rhysand's anxious thoughts disappeared. Because the way she had answered broke him just a little bit. She was no longer jesting, the girl was completely serious when she answered.
Celeana was now staring at a spot on the wall, emotions swarming her face. "Long ago," She smiled a sad smile. "I fell in love,"
Even a fool could tell that something must have happened. There was no other way the usually loud girl could turn silent so quickly. Her eyes were slightly illuminated by memories and her cheeks were almost rosy.
"His name was Sam," And with that, everyone knew that this 'Sam' was no doubt gone.
"What happened?" That had been Cas.
It was a question that Rhys also wanted to know-actually it seemed like they all did. Especially Azriel. Sitting up straight in his chair, still and unmoving, Azriel bore his eyes into the beauty before him.
And just like her expression changed. She was no longer reminiscing about memories. The light in her eyes was instantly extinguished and her smile vanished.
"I was too late," With each word, her voice got quieter and quieter until Rhysand could barely hear her. "And he died."
"Did he love you too?"
When Celeana answered Mor, she sounded just a little less sad. "Yes, he loved me too…"
Rhys watched Celeana silently battle the emotions emitting within her. Her eyes glazed over, her posture stiff. She looked out the window and was quiet for the rest of the night.
And just like that, Rhysand gave up the notion of ever being with the human. Gave up what little hope he had managed to scrape up. Because the look that she had when she had said his name said it all. It told the male that Celeana was still in love with Sam and still grieving him. Told him that she nigh never be over her former lover. Even if they really were fated as the high lord believed and hoped-
So Rhysand finished the last of his glass and looked out at the sky too, and prayed.
