Pearl was standing near the window of her guest room in the Edgeworth-Wright household. The only light in the room came from a street light outside. The rain pelted the window viciously and the young girl couldn't help but think that the sky was also crying for Mystic Maya.
Pearl sniffed quietly as she clutched her magatama necklace to her chest. Poor Mystic Maya...She must be so scared, all alone in that giant cavern, cold and without food. She wishes she could help somehow. But Mr. Nick forbade her from staying the night at the temple. So she couldn't even help save Mystic Maya. All she could do was cry silently in her room.
She wiped her tears with the sleeve of her fluffy Pink Princess nightgown and tried to grab another tissue from the box to wipe her nose when she realized it was empty. This revelation only made her cry harder, not only couldn't she help Mystic Maya, but now she also wasted all of Mr. Nick's tissues. She truly was useless.
Just then the door to her guest room opened and light from the hallway flooded her room. She looked at her door to see a puff of light brown hair. She recognized the figure immediately.
"S-Sebastian? What are you doing here?" asked Pearl.
"I couldn't sleep. I was on my way to get some water from the kitchen when I passed by your room and heard someone crying. Are you feeling ok Pearls?" said Sebastian.
"I-...I'm worried about Mystic Maya...She's all alone at the temple...with no one to keep her company...no food or water...I also overheard Mr. Godot saying she could be dead..." More water pooled around her eyes as Sebastian wrapped his arms around the young girl. He didn't really have much experience with comforting people but he wasn't about to let Pearl cry alone in the dark. He knows very well how horrible that feels.
Wordlessly he picks the young girl up and she immediately latches onto his musical themed blue pajamas. He gets them to the living room and places Pearl on the couch. Then he speedwalks to the kitchen and brings out 2 boxes of orange juice and Ms. von Karma's special white chocolate and raspberry cookies. He hopes the german woman can forgive him for raiding her stash, as this was an emergency. He also takes out a new box of tissues for the young girl.
Once he makes it to the couch, he hands her a tissue and a juice box before putting the plate of cookies on the coffee table. Sebastian goes around the couch and takes one of the blankets from underneath the expandable armchair. He drapes it around Pearl, who was showing signs of calming down and puts an arm around her. He may not know how to comfort people, but one thing he does know is that hugs always feel nice. In the end he and Pearl end up watching one of Mr. Edgeworth's Steel Samurai movies.
In the morning Miles finds the two cuddled on the couch with an eaten plate of cookies, sound asleep. He takes the blanket that has fallen off and drapes it over them before going to make breakfast.
...
Phoenix was boiling in the defendant's lobby. He was very scared for Maya, this morning Miles called Franziska to ask for updates only to find out they barely made any progress. She's been stuck there for almost 3 days. He hoped she was fine, Phoenix doesn't know if he could ever face Mia if he let her precious little sister perish in such a cruel way.
He was snapped out of his mussings when he felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked up and saw it was Gregory. The older man smiled warmly at him.
"Maya will be fine, Phoenix. You just concentrate on helping Iris, ok?"
"Right..."
"No you're Wright."
Phoenix blinked at Gregory before groaning. "Mr. Edgeworth that was a terrible joke."
"You found it funny when you said it. And I thought I told you to call me Gregory."
Phoenix was about to answer when Pearl entered the lobby. She was escorted by Miles.
"Hey Pearls, how you feeling?" asked Phoenix.
"I'm ok Mr. Nick, I have to be strong for Mystic Maya's sake."
"Oh Pearls, you're such a trooper. Let's hope Franziska and Kay can break the locks before I manage to finish the trial."
"Um...Mr. Nick? Can I come to the defense bench with you? I wanna help."
"Sorry Pearls, but this is a pretty gruesome case, I'd rather you don't watch it at all, or at least stay in the gallery where you can hide if it gets scary. How about you go with Miles and Mr. Edg-Gregory. You can also get snacks from the vending machine, Kay tells me their swiss rolls are great."
Pearl looked a bit dejected but nodded in the end and took Gregory's hand, who led her to the vending machine to get some of those magical swiss rolls. Once they left, Miles looked back at Phoenix and squeezed his shoulder reassuringly.
"Find the truth." he said, before going after Pearl and Gregory.
...
The trial began and Phoenix noted that their usual judge, judge James Udge. The older man bannged his gavel and the trial began. Godot gave his cryptic opening statement and announced that Iris had a change of heart. The prosecutor called Iris to the stand.
"...Upon meeting a beautiful lady, always ask for her name and profession. Thats one of my rules." said Godot.
"Um...I am Sister Iris of Hazakura Temple. I am but a simple nun undergoing training at the temple."
"Witness, is there something that you want to confess to?" asked the judge.
"...Yes. But first I wish to apologize to Mr. Wright. I...I cannot continue lying to everyone anymore. I'm afraid that...I did play a part in this terrible incident."
"What are you saying, Sister Iris?" asked the judge. "Are you confessing to murdering Elise Deauxnim?"
"No, I did not murder anyone, your honor. But I am guilty of dealing with the cover up."
"After her spirit left, I took the lifeless shell of Mystic Elise and carried it to the Hazakura Temple Courtyard, where I desecrated it..."
"Sister Iris...are you confessing to being an accomplice to murder?" asked the judge.
"Yes...I did."
"Ha...Everyone on the planet is an accomplice to something. It just happens to be that in this case, it's to murder." said Godot. "Isn't that right, Trite?" Phoenix merely glared in response and threw away Iris' testimony from earlier.
"Now then little lady..." continued Godot. "If you don't mind, I've got a question for you. Whose crime were you trying to cover up by your actions?"
"...I have been at Hazakura Temple ever since I was a child. The temple is run by one of the branch families of the Kurain Tradition. One of our missions is to protect the main family. That's why I would dirty myself, if need be, to protect her...The daughter of the Master of the Kurain Channeling Technique, Mystic Maya Fey."
The gallery blew up. People were discussing and talking. But the only thing Phoenix heard was the enraged cry of a little girl. "Thats a lie! Mystic Maya would never-"
Iris stated that she had seen Deauxnim attack Maya with a dagger in the Inner Temple garden and that Maya had killed her in self-defense. Phoenix pointed out that Deauxnim's staff contained a hidden sword and that, since the victim already had a weapon, using a separate dagger would not make sense. Godot said that swords were unwieldy for close-quarters combat and dismissed his claim entirely. Wright still refused to believe the claim that Maya would kill someone, even in self defense and revealed Elise Deauxnim's true identity as Misty Fey, Maya's long-lost mother.
Phoenix claimed that it was unlikely for Maya to kill her own mother. Godot ignored him and presented a bloodstained dagger to the court that he had found stuck to the back of a pine tree at the crime scene. Unfortunately for Maya, it corroborated Iris's testimony. Iris testified that Maya had stolen Deauxnim's weapon and stabbed her in the stomach when she had her back to the stone lantern, but Wright stated that this contradicted the autopsy report, which said that the victim had died from a stab wound to the back. Godot debunked his claim again by reminding everyone that it was dark that night and that Iris could have made a mistake due to the darkness, which could also explain why Maya and Deauxnim had not recognized each other.
Unfortunately for Godot, the name "Maya" was written in blood on the lantern. After a bit more back and forth with Iris and Godot, who apparently was unaware of the fact that "Maya" was written in blood on the lantern, Iris was asked to testify about her cover-up of the crime scene. Iris claimed to have dragged the body across Dusky Bridge and used the snowmobile to carry it to Hazakura Temple when the snow stopped falling , where she had stabbed it with the Shichishito, but Wright reminded the court that the bridge had caught on fire while snow was still falling, meaning it was impossible for Iris to have carried the body across the bridge.
Wright then presented Butz's sketch. The defense claimed that the person Butz had seen "flying" over the bridge was in fact Misty Fey. He said that the suspension cables on the bridge were upside-down on Butz's picture, which meant the entire picture was upside-down. This meant that Butz's sketch did not depict a body flying, it depicted the victim's body swinging under the burning bridge like a pendulum. This also explained that the trauma on her body was caused by the rough landing and how the orb got on the other side.
Iris claimed to have no knowledge of this. Wright said that someone had to have received the body on the other side and carried it with the snowmobile. Bikini couldn't have carried a body with her back problems, meaning Iris was the only one who could have done it.
"...Sister Iris. I have a question for you." said Wright. "Why didn't you mention the pendulum swing when you first gave your testimony? We have already proved that it happened using an eyewitness' sketch. This means that you should have already known that, since you helped with the cover up."
"N-no! I- I had no idea...I...I swear I didn't know anything about the pendulum."
"But there is no other way for the body to get to the other side, without your help. It'd be impossible for you to be clueless...unless you weren't really Sister Iris to begin with."
"W-what? But how can that b-be Mr. Wright." exclaimed Iris.
"A-are you serious Trite...Don't tell me that this actually is-"
Phoenix nodded. "Yes, the woman standing in front of us is the serial killer known as Dahlia Arsenia Hawthorne."
