Chapter one

Please.. Do I have to ask?

"Bones, whatcha up to?" Booth said as he strolled into her office on a monday on a sunny april day. "It's lunch time, tick tock a guy has got to eat" He pointed at his watch and she glanced down at hers.

"Oh, I'm sorry, Booth but I have lunch plans, I forgot to tell you that earlier today.. We can have dinner though?" She said with regret in her voice. "Believe me, I would rather have lunch with you but this lunch has been planned weeks in advance" She explained as she took off her lab coat and put on her trench coat.

"Weeks in advance.. What kind of lunch is this?" He asked handling over her bag to her.

"It's just this lunch I have with a headache of a person from college, I mean she was my rock through college but since we went our separate ways after we graduated, we have been competing with each other non stop. This lunch is just to talk about who has it better and who is more successful." She explained and put her bag on her shoulder. "Did you park in the garage?" He nodded and they walked down to the garage together, his hand on her lower back, just like always.

"I'll see you later then, I guess, I'll be at the office" He said opening her door. She smiled at the gesture.

"I can open my own door, Booth" She said and got in. "I'll come by after my lunch, we can go over the case" She continued.

"If I can't but you lunch, the least I can do is open your door." He gave her his smile that made people smile back instantly, so she did. "I'll see you later, Bones, drive safe"

"You too, Booth" She smiled as he closed the door and watched her drive off.

She made her way downtown, fidgeting with the steering wheel the whole way. She never looked forward to meeting Shelly, it was always at the fanciest restaurant in town to show how could order the most expensive meal. Brennan never told Shelly how much she really made, because then she would always make her pay and she would get the most expensive meal times two.

She got out of the car when she parked it outside of the restaurant and sighed. "I got this" She said to herself and walked inside. The classical music played in the background she glanced around the place. It had only opened last month and it had been hard to get a table but she had told them her name and they made room instantly.

"Hello and welcome to Capri Zhan, do you have a reservation?" A joyful voice came out of the girl standing at the hostess stand.

"Yes, Hi, I have a reservation under Brennan." She said looking over the hostess' shoulder seeing the table where Shelly sat at.

"I see, Yes, Temperance Brennan" She said reading off of the computer. "What an honor to have you here, this way" She Continued and grabbed a many and showed the way.

The crowd around her were dressed in their nicest dressed and cleanest suits. "And here we are" The hostess called out.

"Tempe, it's been too long" Shelly said when she saw Brennan turn the corner.

"Shelly, hello" Brennan said as Shelly embraced her in a tight hug. Brennan took a deep Breath Shelly back away. "How have you been?"

"Oh, I've been great, lovely She said sitting down." We started a new project at work this week, all good things coming my way" She said and laughed. "What about you?"

"I've been good also, we are in the middle of an important case right now a set of remains were found in a landfill" Brennan answered and put a napkin over her lap.

The water asked for their drink for the day and left a bottle of water. The conversation vegan lighter than Brennan expected, Shelly went on and on about how well her company is doing at the moment and asked all about Brennan's work.

"Are you ready to order?" The water asked as they approached the table. They nodded and place their order.

"So, how is life otherwise?" Shelly asked and took a sip from her glass.

"It's good. I was just informed that my book has been on the best seller number one for the 13th week in a row." Brennan exclaimed happily.

"Wow.. Number one huh?" Shelly said raising her brows. Brennan nodded and lifted her glass to her mouth and took a sip. "Well my company just got voted as the most successful company in DC" She added and smiled.

"That's great, Shelly!" Brennan said and put down her glass. "The jeffersonian got an award for most solved ancient remains just the other week, so I know how you feel!" Shelly looked at her and scrunched her nose.

"Did I tell you about his amazing guy that I met?" Shelly exclaimed and put her shoulders on the table. Brennan shook her head. "His name is Micheal, rich, handsome and great in bed" Shelly said in a sigh. "Like really great in bed." She widened her eyes and looked at Brennan. "And he takes me on these amazing trips and on his boat, did I tell you he has a boat?" She asked and Brennan shook her head once again, she took a deep breath. "Yeah, he has a boat and he rents a jet, he is so lovely" She paused and twirled her wine around in her glass.

"I just got engaged" why the hell did I say that? Brennan thought to herself.

"You what?" Shelly asked putting down her glass.

"I just got engaged, to a man." Brennan answered. She mentally slapped herself.

"Well tell me all about it" Shelly's eyes dropped to Brennan's hands. "I don't see a ring?" She said as she raised her eyebrows.

"We had to get it resized, he thought he knew my ring size, it was too big unfortunately.. He was so sweet about it too" Brennan said and chuckled. What are you doing? She asked herself again.

"Well tell me about him how is he? Is he hot? What does he work with? How is he in bed? Where does he take you? What does the ring look like?" She asked question after question.

"He is amazing, really kind" Brennan said. Shelly looked at her as if she said "That's it?" with her eyes. "and he.." She blinked quickly gathering her thoughts. "He works for the FBI"

"FBI huh? Then he must be built like a god right?" Shelly gushed.

"Yeah, he, yeah, he looks great, amazing even" Brennan replied and winked at Shelly. "He has brown hair and these gorgeous hazel eyes" what are you doing, you know who you are describing, stop it. She told herself.

"And please tell me about the ring, is it big? Is it beautiful?" She asked and took another sip.

Their waiter came over and interrupted them with their food. They served them and changed out their water.

"So? The ring?" Shelly said once the water was gone.

"It's beautiful, it has an oval halo with a big diamond, two smaller Diamonds on the side and then smaller ones around it, I can't wait to wear it" She explained. Have I thought about that ring before? How did I-? She thought to herself.

"I can't wait to see it!" Shelly exclaimed and clapped her hands. "You, me, Michael and your new fiance, let's double date this weekend" She widened her eyes in excitement. Brennan panicked inside. How was she going to convince him to do this? Brennan only nodded and took a big sip from her glass.

"So, this weekend, at Georgie's?" Shelly asked as they walked out of the restaurant.

"Yes, at seven sharp" Brennan smiled. "I'll get my man ready in time" Shelly chuckled.

"I really wanna hear the story of the two of you, I'll see you friday" She pointed at Brennan as she slowly walked away from her.

Brennan spunn around at but her hands over her face. Why did she do this? Why did she have to take it one step too far this time? She shook her head and walked over to her car. "I'm engaged" She mocked herself. "I'm so stupid" She said and got in the car.

Brennan drove to the FBI and parked in the garage. She found his car and parked beside it. She turned off the car and took a deep breath. "Just tell him how it is, tell him that you only thought him when she asked who" Her eyes widened. "No, no, no do not tell him that" She shook her head and got out of the car.

The elevator went up slowly to his office and she tapped her foot impatiently. The familiar ding reached her ears and she quickly exits the elevator. The office was quite empty due to the hour of the day, she glanced around. No Sweets in sight. She V-lined for Booth's office.

Booth whipped up his head and his eyes landed on the woman running into his office and closing the door. "What's up Bones? Was the lunch a disaster?" He asked standing up. Brennan looked at him and then cleared her throat.

"Something like that" She said with a strained voice and put her hands on her hips. "I.." She started and put her hand over her eyes. "I need you to be my fiance." She exclaimed and moved the hand down over her mouth to see his reaction. His eyes widened and he choked on his breath.

"You need me to what?" Booth said pulling on his tie and swallowed hard.

"I need you to be my fiance and we have to think of a story of how we met" She started rambling.

"You know how we met" Booth interrupted her.

"I know, but we don't work together according to her and we need to buy a ring and we need to think of how you proposed." She started pacing around his office. He walked around his desk and scratched the back of his head.

"I need you to back up and tell me what the hell happened during this lunch." He said grabbing her shoulders, forcing her eyes to meet his. "Why am I your fiance? And why didn't I know about it?" He smiled and winked. "Sit down and tell me." She took a deep breath and sat down.

"Okay, okay.." She said quietly and put her hair behind her ears. "Okay, I've known Shelly for years, and we always want to one up each other, I have to be better than her, I have to, Booth" She looked intensely at him.

"And how did the conversation end up with me being your fiance?" He asked and raised his brows.

"She told me that she had met someone and she was telling me how amazing he was and all of the trips they went on and it just.. I wanted to better, so I told her the only thing I knew would be better, engagement." She told him and put her hands over her face again.

"And I'm still missing the part as to why I'm the fiance" He asked and shook his head.

"I knew.." She started and let out a deep breath. "She has a thing for cops and I knew this would be the perfect thing and.." She paused.

"And..?" He smiled.

"And I.. I just started describing someone and that someone just happened to be you and now I can't just ask someone else because she would know and I know we have chemistry and it would look real." She said and her eyes met his.

"Yeah we do have chemistry.." He said and smiled. "You know, I haven't said yes yet" He leaned back.

"Please, Booth you need to help me." She pleaded and put her hand on his thigh. "I can't go to that dinner alone and tell her everything was a lie, I can't." Her eyes widened in panic.

"You haven't even asked me, you only ordered to be your fiance" He said in a matter-of-factly tone and stood up to walk to his desk chair. Brennan let her jaw fall a little.

"You can't.. You can't be serious." She said and stood up. He shrugged and started sorting his paperwork. "You can't mean that you want me to propose to you, you can't" She said and put her hands on his desk.

"Well, I'm sorry, I can't help you" He shrugged and took a deep breath. "Wanna go over the case?" He said and smiled as he held up the case file. She scoffed and stood up straight.

"You.." She said and straightened her coat. "Please" She pleaded. He smiled and shrugged.

"Sorry, no can do" He said. "So, the victim had been at the landfill for about three weeks before it was found and before that in a freezer for, one week?" Booth stared down at the case file in his palm.

"Will you.." She started and his eyes traveled up to met hers. "Will you.." She tried again and scoffed. He smiled and let out a chuckle. "Will you be my fiance?" She spat out and folded her arms over her chest.

"What, no ring?" He asked and put his hand on his chest looking offended before breaking out a smile.

"No, I haven't had time to get one and I described one to her and it has to be that one.." She started to explain. "Will you?" She asked again in a soft voice.

"Of course I will, Bones" He smiled. "Anything for my partner" He added and sat down. "What ring did you describe?"

"Uhm, it should have an oval halo with a big diamond, two smaller Diamonds on the side and then smaller ones around it, I think I said" She thought back to the conversation. "And it should be a double band, it's prettier" She added.

"Okay, oddly specific" He said squinting his eyes. "Is this a ring you have seen?" He asked and flipped through the pages of the file.

"No" She said shortly. "I just have always imagined something like that. Not that I imagined getting married or engaged, but if someone were to buy me a ring, that would be it" She said caressing the chair beside her before sitting down again.

He checked his watch and glanced at her. "Want to go and look at rings now?" He asked in a whisper. She looked up at him.

"What now? Already?" She asked and furrowed her brows.

"Yes, now, what if they have to fix it and it takes a few days and you can't have it at the dinner?" He said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

"That is true." She lit up but quickly frowned. "Where does one buy an engagement ring?" She asked in a whisper. He chuckled and stood up to grab his jacket.

"I know just the place" Booth said and gestured for the door.

The door rung as they walked through the it. The person behind the display turned to the couple walking through the door. "Welcome to Francesca's jewelry, what can I help you with today?" He welcomed them to the store and they slowly walked up to the display.

Booth gestured for Brennan to talk first. "I.. I uhm, I need an engagement ring." She said closing her eyes.

"And is this the lucky guy?" He asked smiling and gestured to Booth. Booth turned to her, knowing that this situation made her uncomfortable. Instead of saying anything he just smiled at her.

"No, uhm, I mean yes, I mean.." She shook her head to gather her words. "I need an engagement ring to show an old college friend that I'm engaged so if I could just pay a downpayment until I return the ring?" She explained the situation.

"This is no pawnshop or something, m'am. You buy the ring or you don't" He firmly said and put his hands on his back.

"But I don't need it later." She tried it again.

"But you need it now?" He asked and she nodded. "Then you buy the ring." He added.

"Fine, I'll buy one then." She gave up. "I need an oval halo with a big diamond, two smaller Diamonds on the side and then smaller ones around it." She said confidently.

"With a double band" Booth added. He stepped closer and leaned in. "Because it's prettier says the lady" He winked and stepped back again. Brennan shot him a look that could kill. "What? That's what you told me.." He said in defense.

"Let's see.." The guy behind the display said as he took out the options. "Oval halo.." He murmured as he looked through them. "Ring size?"

"Six" She said without thinking and looked at the rings.

"You just know that on the top of your head?" Booth asked and furrowed his brows.

"Every woman who has thought about marriage knows her ring size." The employee said amused.

"Oh no, not Bones, she doesn't think about marriage" Booth chuckled.

"You don't know that, Booth" Brennan turned to Booth. "I might not have seen myself being married but a woman should always know her ring size." She said matter-of-factly and turned her attention back to the employee.

"I think we have the perfect ring." He said picking up a sparkling ring and showed Brennan.

"That is exactly how I imagined it would look like" She exclaimed. "You are very good at your job, sir." She said to the employee.

"Well, I don't work for the best jewelry store in town for nothing." He said with pride. "Go ahead, try it on." He gestured to the ring and Brennan glanced down at it. The sight of it made her heart stop. It was stunning, breathtaking. She took a deep breath and slowly threaded it onto her finger.

"It's.." She started.

"It's all wrong I knew it.." The employee exclaimed.

"It's perfect." She said softly and admired her hand. Booth glanced at her in secret. She was absolutely beautiful without knowing it. He saw as she took another deep breath and brushing away the hair from her face. He shook his head to get out of his trance. "Isn't it beautiful?" She turned to him and showed him her hand.

"Yeah, yeah, it's breathtaking." He said softly and put a hand against her lower back, making her feel safe.

"This is the one, we'll take it" She said glancing back at the employee.

"Perfect, it looks gorgeous on you." He said and walked over to grab a jewelry box and a bag. She took off the ring and gave it back to him. She hadn't even looked at the price of the ring. She knew that whatever it costs, it will be worth it to see the look on Shelly's face. She smiled at the thought and picked up her wallet from her purse.

The employee carefully wrapped the box and put it in the bag just as carefully and walked over to the cashier. "The is a guarantee to come and polish it twice a year for three years, to keep it sparkling." He said as he punched in the price on the register. Brennan nodded, knowing that she would have it in a drawer and not on her finger after this weekend. "If you like the ring once you've worn it for a few days, we have a pair of simple matching earrings" He added and Brennan shook her head.

"I won't need those." She said calmly and took out her card.

"Okay, then your total is 12,500 dollars." The employee said and gestured towards the card machine. Booth started coughing behind Brennan as she didn't flinch at the price of the ring.

"Are you seriously buying a ring for that price, to trick your friend that you have the better life?" He exclaimed and rubbed his face.

"What? It's only a small part of the advance I got from may latest book and it will be worth it." She said and paid for the ring. She smiled as the employee gave her the bag. "Have a nice day and thank you for your help today" She told the employee.

"And thank you, have a lovely day you two" He said and waved them off as they walked out of the shop.

"Twelve grand, Bones" Booth hissed as the walked out on the sidewalk. "Twelve. GRAND." He repeated. His widened eyes and panicked expression told her that this ring would take him some getting used to.

"It's really no worries, Booth" She shrugged it off and started walking. "I have the money for it and later I can either keep it, pawn it or sell it, it's not engraved with any dates or names. It's as good as new." She explained. He stalked after her.

"It's just a lot of money" He said softly. "I don't even make than in two months…" He muttered and walked beside her.

"That's only because I write books and I'm the best at what I do." She said nonchalantly. "You should really ask for a raise if you don't earn that in two months. You deserve to earn more than you do" She added. He smiled at her comment.

"Why, thank you, Bones" He said and put his arm around her shoulder. "That was very kind of you." He added and she laughed.

"To say that you deserve to earn a lot of money?" She smiled. He nodded and joined in with her laughter.

"Yeah, because that means that you think what I do is important" HE said softly and squeezed her shoulder.

"It is important, I've always thought that your work is important" She said glancing at him. "Even that so called 'stupid' paperwork you despise so much" She smiled. They continued to walk towards his car before they drove off to the FBI building again.
