Chapter 16
Michael
The Electroclan raced just behind me as we navigated the halls with Ian's help. Not much had been going according to plan so I hoped that we could at least get out with Dr. Three, even if we did get picked up by the government.
"Are you sure Alex can handle all the electric children?" Ostin's brow was furrowed as he ran up beside me. "He's just a normal guy."
"He's got Nichelle," I replied. "She can take them all down without a sweat."
Ostin didn't have the time to protest; we were standing right outside an office door, Dr. Three's office door.
"So what's the plan?" Taylor brushed her hair behind one ear. "We go in and light him up?"
"I'm down with that," McKenna's hand started to glow red hot. "He's a psycho. We can't give him any foothold in the fight."
"He's got a few guards with him," Ian interrupted. "We need to take them out first."
"Then let's make an entrance," I nodded to Zeus. "Let's get it over with."
Zeus stepped back and hurled a lightning bolt at the door, blasting it off its hinges and filling the hall with the acrid smell of burning metal. I rushed in with the Electroclan, hands raised to blast the guards. Jack attacked the guard closest to the door, tackling him to the ground. Taylor caused as much confusion as she could by rebooting everyone in the room. That made it easier for Tessa to boost Zeus and McKenna's attacks. Soon, every guard was a smoking heap on the ground.
"Very impressive, Mr. Vey," the smooth voice of Dr. Three came from the smoke that filled the room. "I understand why you have become such a pest to Hatch."
Everyone looked around wildly, squinting through the smoke, trying to catch a glimpse of the man.
"Thank you," I said carefully. "I suggest that you surrender now. You've seen what we can do. I don't want to have to hurt you."
There was a dead silence before…
"Hahahaha!" Dr. Three's laughter sang through the air. "You're a brave one! Yes… I see why Alex Rider saw you as worthy allies."
I felt the air move at my back and the next thing I knew was an explosion of light behind my eyes as something hit me from behind. I was on the ground before I knew what really happened.
"You talk a big game," he continued. "But at the end of the day, you are still just a child."
Another person cried out and another thud. Zeus was on the floor with me, clutching his knee to his chest, his face twisted in a grimace. McKenna started to glow brighter, illuminating silhouettes of everyone in the room. I could see the shadow of a man gliding through the haze like a phantom as he took out each of my friends.
Alex
"You're sure about this?" The girl, Nichelle, fixed me with a rather worried look. "This could kill you."
"But it won't," I fiddled with my weapon. "You're going to make sure I don't."
The Elgen uniform was hot and I could already feel myself sweating through the material as me and Nichelle waited for the electric kids to find us.
"A lot could go wrong," she narrowed her eyes. "And we don't have back up."
I tilted my head to one side. It was true. The likelihood of anyone coming to bail us out was slim, especially when this was supposed to be a stealth mission.
"Have a little faith in me," I forced a grin.
That was when I felt the heat, literally. It was like a bonfire had burst to life in front of me, the heat tearing at my face. I cried out, dropping my gun. I saw Nichelle spin around and put out a hand, as if she was stopping something with her palm. The heat went away immediately.
"Well, well, well, Mr. Rider," I heard the soft tone of Dr. Hatch. "It appears your luck has run out."
"Not from where I'm standing," I shouted, grabbing the gun again. I shoot off a few rounds.
I felt the entire gun lurch; it flew out of my hands and down the hall until it spun to a stop in front of Hatch. I pulled Nichelle behind the wall with me.
"This is going great," her voice was sarcastic but her eyes were filled with concern.
"They'll take the bait," I whispered. "Just wait for it."
I stepped out in front of Hatch, fully exposed. I had my hands in the air, a small smile still on my face.
"Aww, you got me mate," I said slowly. "No need to get nasty."
I was then hit with another wave of heat, forcing me to the ground, clutching my chest. I tried to breathe but the scorching pain was almost too much.
"Come now, Mr. Rider," Hatch's voice was full of glee. "Dr. Three has told me a lot about you. I think he will be pleased when I bring your mangled body to him personally."
One of the electric kids approached, his hand glowing slightly. Nichelle was still hidden behind the wall. He kneeled over when he was a few steps away from me. I sprung to my feet and managed to kick him at his hip, forcing him to the ground. But I hadn't even looked up yet, but I could feel the cool mouth of a gun pressed to the side of my face.
"Ah, I think Michael and his friends will be subdued by now," Hatch mused. "Why don't we go and join them?"
Things are darkest before the dawn right? Right? Feel free to review! I'm open to suggestions for future crossovers and such!
