(A/N: I discovered this gem in my Google Drive. Written in WordPad when I was nine and spanning fourteen chapters, this somehow manages to be the only non-oneshot fanfiction I've ever completed. Presenting for the first time in all its unedited, melodramatic, every-chapter-name-has-to-be-a-cliché, that-doesn't-make-sense-but-the-plot-demands-it glory, it's Mending the Broken: A Sonamy. I'll include a few commentary notes here and there, but for the most part I will allow my youthful author to speak for herself.
Q: Why do Knuckles and Sonic discuss multiplication in this chapter?
A: I was in third grade and really proud of learning my multiplication tables. Truly wonderful, the mind of a child is.)
Mending the Broken~A Sonamy
Chapter One: One, Two, Buckle My Shoe
Knuckles sat at the top stair of Angel Island, guarding the Master Emerald. All was quiet and serene. Suddenly a blue flash of light was visible in the forest that extended out from the floating island. Knuckles stood up in surprise. Sonic. Usually Sonic had better things to do than hanging around and missing out on all the adventure that was possibly lingering right around the corner. But now, here he was, zooming up the stairs.
"Hey, Knuckles!" said Sonic as he walked up the last few steps. "What brings you here? Aren't you busy or something?" Knuckles watched Sonic carefully. Sonic shuffled his feet. "You haven't found anything that belonged to me, have you, Knux?"
Knuckles shifted his weight. "What've you lost?"
Sonic lifted a shoe. "One of my shoe buckles. You know, the gold ones. See, I've got a buckle here, but..." Sonic turned around to reveal his other shoe. "...nada on this one. You seen it?" The buckle was clearly missing.
"The only thing I've found of yours was that report card full of C's and D's. I so think you're gonna get out of high school with a brain this small." Knuckles picked up a tiny pebble. He let the stone fall to the floor as he handed the wrinkled paper to Sonic along with a lopsided grin.
Sonic took a quick look at it and began to fold it into fourths as his face flushed red. "Come on, at least I know what twelve times twelve is."
Knuckles picked up the pebble again and tossed it from hand to hand. "News flash. Everyone from third grade and up know that one. It's one hundred and eight." Sonic smirked. "Wrong, Einstein. That's nine times twelve. Twelve times twelve is a hundred forty-four. Duuuh! But hey, you can't help it. You dropped out of fifth grade, remember that?"
Knuckles wound up and threw the stone high over the treetops. "I had to take on the title of guardian after my father's death, remember? And about you and your stupid shoe buckle...I don't have it! So, buzz off." Knuckles waved his hand dismissively.
Sonic stepped forward. "I dare you to say that to my face."
Knuckles clenched his fists. "If you really want me to...BUZZ OFF!"
"Why should I?"
"'Cause I'm busy!"
"Doin' what?"
"None of your business! Get your nosy face out of here!"
"Why should I?"
"You already said that! Just leave!"
"Betcha can't make me!"
Sonic and Knuckles continued to argue, back and forth. Push, shove. Insult, slap. Knuckles was just angry that Sonic continued to annoy him, to get in his face, to not leave. "Look! Go leave! Ask Amy out or something! I don't care! Just GET OFF BEFORE I KICK YOU OFF!"
"Date Amy? Date Amy? Listen! I don't like Amy, much less would I date her, so why don't you go kiss a naked mole rat or something!" Sonic crossed his arms and planted his feet on the ground.
Knuckles let the insult roll off his back and returned it with one of his own. "You know you're lying. You do like her, and your greatest wish would be to plant a kiss right on her little lips."
Sonic was fuming. "No, I HATE Amy! I wouldn't like her even if she was the only person left on this whole planet! Why, if-" However, Sonic was cut off by a feminine gasp that sounded surprisingly like Amy. Both boys turned just in time to see Amy drop something and run back into the thick of the forest.
Sonic forgot everything that had been on his mind. Things that were once crucial to him were worthless in comparison to a friend. His friend. His Amy. He began to run into the forest at full speed, calling out for Amy every ten seconds. "Amy! Wait up! Ames! I really truly didn't mean it! Ames?" Soon Sonic wasn't sure which path Amy had taken. He sighed and sat down on a rock.
Why did I say those things? They aren't true... To be honest, I think that if she was the only one on the planet... Sonic frowned, thinking of all the possibilities of what might happen. Finally he pushed the thought away. There were more important things at stake. Even if she's a bit crazy sometimes, Amy's a great friend. She's always so...fearless. I gotta admire that... Most likely Sonic had broken Amy's heart. She liked him, and he knew it. Sure, sometimes Amy was the most annoying thing ever, but there had always been a solution that worked and didn't damage Amy's feelings too much. But now... Sonic scraped at the dirt with a stick. He had chosen the worst possible choice. Ever. Sonic would never have another chance to mend what was broken, to revive what was lost.
Amy was gone.
