Rayne was exhausted by the time Mac returned to the apartment again after a long day and he chuckled when he saw she was sleeping on the couch. "She walked around for a little bit on the bars and then we did some simple walking through the apartment. She's drained. I'm not just talking about in the physical sense either," Hawkes warned and Mac nodded. He knew Rayne probably was feeling nothing right and probably still in her own head blamed herself. "Rayne admitted she couldn't stop thinking about it. What happened."
"I wouldn't expect her to be completely numb. But I think I'm going to book her an appointment with a shrink. Not Jahara as she wasn't receptive to her. I want Rayne to be receptive to her," Mac answered and Hawkes handed him a card and Mac smiled. "I was thinking of Dr Richards as we usually call her in when we know a child has witnessed murder. Knowing this child watched us shoot down Renaldo, she was sexually assaulted and witnessed murder to begin with?"
"Not to mention her first rape," Hawkes admitted as he picked up Rayne and carried her to her bed. "I know she probably won't want to talk to the shrinks but we have to convince her that it is better for her to talk it out with someone. Maybe even getting Stella or Jo to talk to her about agreeing to see someone. They seem to do well with her."
"I'll get Stella to agree to a Skype call in the morning," Mac answered sending off a text. He then looked at Rayne's sleeping form. "I'll probably work on some case files that need to be wrote up as my reports are expected soon. I don't want to be too out of it if Rayne needs me."
"I'll spend the night and be the light sleeper. Rayne needs you during the day," Hawkes advised. Mac looked at him shocked at how Sheldon was willing to do that. "Rayne's close to everyone in the lab. But I've been one of the only ones to see her through all this," he explained.
"You have no idea how much she appreciates you," Mac assured him before going to the kitchen to quietly work on some paperwork for a few hours before heading to bed, but he looked in on Rayne and saw she was awake. "Hey," he greeted softly and she smiled at him when he walked in. "You okay?"
"Fine," she responded as she looked out her window. "Why did this have to happen? I don't understand why people think that they need to do this," she responded and Mac knew what she was referring to, at least he hoped. "The girls did nothing wrong. They just were there. Why were they killed?"
"Because the one responsible thought it would be best to silence anyone that was around. What he didn't count on was you seeing everything before going to fight back again when he caught up with you," Mac responded looking at her. "We will prosecute and get the attacker on you and the girls and then prosecute Renaldo for everything he's done," Mac promised. He looked at her and saw the fear in her eyes. "I promise that this will end and you won't feel robbed."
"He needs to pay," she responded. She didn't think much about Renaldo although what he did bothered her to no end. "The one that killed them. He needs to pay."
"He will. When this goes to trial you will be expected to stand trial and tell people about what happened." She nodded at him and then laid down again looking serious and he smiled softly before pressing a kiss to her forehead. "Get some sleep. Tomorrow will come too soon."
"Yeah," she answered yawning and he carefully closed her door again and went to his room himself and looked at a picture he had of him and Claire before thinking about how she would have loved having a kid like Rayne around but also feared how Renaldo would fare after learning what he did to her.
By morning though, Mac lifted a brow in confusion as he could hear the TV running and laughing. He wasn't complaining but it was nice to hear something good for once. Walking out in his jeans and a Marine T-shirt, he saw Hawkes and Rayne were watching TV with the little dinner tables holding their breakfast. "I see I missed the fact that Hawkes cooked."
"Toaster waffles. Wasn't in the mood for fancy," Rayne responded as she looked at him. Mac nodded and then noted that they were still hot. "We only just made them. Hawkes took forever to wake up," she answered starting to become a little more childish near the end.
"You do realize there's this thing called making a little noise so someone knows you're up since you can't fully walk yet," Hawkes responded looking at her and she chuckled at him before finishing her food and attempting to stand which only made Mac and Hawkes rush forwards as she was falling a bit.
"Stop," she snapped actually effectively slapping Hawkes and Mac couldn't believe it. He knew she couldn't walk or stand for long periods of time so he grabbed a chair and put it into the corner and carefully helped her over.
"You're going to sit facing the corner until I come back for you," he warned her firmly and then walked over to Sheldon who walked into the kitchen. "You know Rayne wouldn't normally do that. I'm not justifying what she did but I'm just certain of that much."
"I know. She's frustrated Mac. She's angry that she can't do what she loves. So she is taking it out. Not saying it's right but she's doing what she knows to do and that means that she's going to fight back when something isn't right to her," Hawkes responded.
As another 10 minutes ended, Mac walked over to Rayne and carefully spun the chair around. "Rayne, you can't be aggressive just because you can't do things. You understand me?" She nodded at him and he looked at her. "I want you to apologize to Sheldon when you get up."
"I will," she promised and as she did manage to stand and used the walls to help her get to the kitchen she saw Hawkes glance up but he didn't change his smile at all. "Sorry about hitting you Hawkes," she apologized. Hawkes knew he couldn't be mad at her.
"It's alright. Just try to avoid that in the future, yeah?" She nodded at him and he chuckled at her before noticing the news. "Seems Renaldo's death is still popular."
"He earned it. He had a chance to stand down," she responded before looking to Mac.
"He did but you still can't change that you saw things that aren't normal," Mac answered and she shrugged at that. He was about to continue before they saw Skype go active on Mac's laptop and it was Stella calling them. "Hey Stella," he greeted.
"Hey. I heard we might finally have the man who got Rayne and anyone else in the case," she greeted and Rayne nodded before starting to get fidgety again and Mac tried to settle her down again. "What's up Rayne?" Stella hadn't been told all the details yet.
"Stella, we had to rush Rayne to hospital right after we got the second one. Hawkes ran a sexual assault kit as we saw bleeding by her pelvis and it came back positive. Rayne was sexually assaulted again and she identified Renaldo as the one who did it twice."
"Rayne," Stella gasped looking at her. "Mac? Can I have a moment alone with her?" Mac and Hawkes nodded leaving the room but the volume was loud enough they'd be able to hear Stella and Hawkes was hiding out behind one wall. "You know it wasn't your fault, right?"
"I fought Stella, and I couldn't stop him," she answered. Stella shushed her as she looked close to crying. "It's not fair. I tried to fight and he still did it. The girls are dead and I couldn't stop the one who killed them when he went at me," she explained before she tried to suppress her crying.
"Ray," Stella began looking at her and she made sure to make Rayne look at her. "Ray, what happened? Was not your fault. You were a victim. A victim of kidnapping to start this whole thing off. Ryan Ducatti kidnapped you when he knew he was going to be forced to give you back. You then became a witness to murder and that turned you into the murderer's next victim," Stella continued and she looked away. "You look at me," she continued and Rayne looked back at Stella. "Those weren't your fault and what Renaldo did? Not your fault. Rayne you're a child. While Amara was right about one thing, which is you're very smart, you couldn't be expected to fight a grown man. You're a victim and all these emotions are finally catching up with you. It's okay to feel scared. But know something. Know you aren't alone. You can talk to a professional, but you also have Mac. Mac and Hawkes. They both worry about you and so does Christine from what I hear," she began.
Mac and Hawkes had to smile at the mention that Stella was warning her about how she did have family. "Christine's pretty cool," she chuckled and Mac smiled at that. Maybe he was wrong about needed a shrink. Stella and Rayne were talking. "I know the cop didn't mean to get me shot," she added.
"Mac told me about that. But it doesn't change he wasn't to shoot unless Mac or Flack gave an order. What's really on your mind? Talk to me," she responded.
"Nothing big," she answered
"Eísai kakós pséftis ótan miloún ta synaisthímatá sou." She looked at Stella confused and she chuckled. "Loosely means you're a bad liar when your emotions are talking," Stella explained and she looked at Stella shocked.
"I think I liked it better in Greek," she decided and Mac smirked at that. She was so much like him in that sense. Stella being Greek used her knowledge of those words to say what she felt. "It's hard. I know Mac wants me to see someone," she continued.
"It's not because he thinks you're going to lose it. But it's something that could happen if you don't get what is in there out," she answered looking at her. "Hey I have to go, but if you guys aren't going to be doing anything tonight, how about you call me then?"
"Around what time?"
"How's 7?"
"Sounds good," she answered and Mac smiled as he heard the laptop close and Rayne fall backwards onto the couch. He walked out and she glanced at him. "Remind me never to ask for Greek translations from her. I don't want to know."
"No you do not," Mac admitted. "She's done that to me more times than you can count," he answered as she sat up. "Did she help out?"
"Yeah. I don't want to see anyone though."
"It's not going to be that one you saw last time if you are saying no because of that," he promised. She smirked and nodded at that. "Yeah I'm not dumb. I'm not forcing you to sit on a couch and talk to someone you clearly don't like."
"Good," she responded. "Do I have to go this week though?"
"No. But next week is the latest I'm willing to push it until," he warned her. She nodded at him and he smiled gently hugging her and she smiled at him. "I won't let what he did go unpunished. Nor will Amara get away with it."
"It kind of stings that she knew. I think that's the worst part. The ones I trusted were always the ones to betray me the most," she answered.
