Mac spent the entire evening reading over everything they could get on Rayne or anything that linked to what Flack was finding out. All the articles that were wrote, weren't wrote by Rayne but it was clear they were in enough foster homes to know something. "I'm looking but I can't find motive for murder in any of these," Mac responded frustrated. He had finally had Christine come and pick Rayne up and take her home so she could get some sleep.
Jo grabbed a couple more boxes from Danny and Lindsay. "We will find the link Mac. She's been in more danger than ever. If anything, they are going to get sloppy and eventually drop the biggest hint in the world about who they are."
"Doesn't change that you've said the truth. Rayne's been in the most danger ever since she was around us. Heck even when we found her, she was dealing with her life being put in danger. She had her head bashed in and she was bleeding out," Mac answered.
"Doesn't change she views you as the parent in her life that she's wanted," Lindsay warned him and he looked at her. "She's fighting back too. So we aren't going to give up on her either. We're going to stand and fight against them too."
"Agreed," Jo answered. "Keep working with some of the trace and see if we can't get a DNA sample to match all the other orphan murders," Jo instructed and they nodded walking off leaving Mac and Jo together. "You've been really quiet."
"The fact that Lindsay called me her parent. I feel like a lousy one. I mean she's in a good school but that's not what makes me a good one. It's what I can give her out of life. All I've given is fear. She's afraid of who's coming for her and anyone she's ever met. We have to solve this," he answered.
"Let's think Mac. Rayne's life has been endangered a lot as well as having her life attempted. Maybe we can't find the evidence yet. Because it doesn't exist in the physical sense," Jo responded and Mac looked at her shocked and then realized. "They're trying to kill her to stop her."
"She knows something and they know it too. So they're trying to silence her, yet that's all she's been. Is dead silent about all of it," Mac answered. He called the landline that linked to the apartment and looked over the city. "Okay Rayne. Pick up. I left a phone right by your bed," he whispered.
"Hello?" He sighed in relief when he heard Rayne's voice. "Dad this isn't funny. I'm tired and was sleeping. So why did you wake me up at ...?" Mac heard some sounds before he heard her groan and sit up. "Well you got me up for school. It's 4 AM. You never came home," she warned.
"Oh shoot. I'm so sorry. Get Flack to take you to school and I'll make it up to you tonight," he promised and she made a small sound. "I swear. But I need a promise from you before you head there. We're finally making some links into why your friends are all being killed. Can you promise me to stay fully aware of your surroundings?"
"Yeah," she answered confused before she realized. "What's going on? What'd you find?"
"Just stay aware," he warned her and she made a small committed sound before hanging up and he looked at the cases and all the evidence they had from the bodies and then saw a picture of Rayne in with Wyatt's belongings and saw the familiar surroundings.
"Is that the Police Department?"
"It's during the Orphanage Benefit that we hold annually. But I never realized they were there," he answered before he saw something. "Look at Rayne's hand," he responded and she glanced to notice it. "She's trying to keep something that's around her neck out of the picture."
"It must be what they're after. She knows if they see what it looks like, they'll identify her too quickly. She's hiding from someone," Jo answered. He then looked in the photo with her and then saw it. "Look in the background. Someone's looking directly at Rayne."
"That's a firefighter and I know they still work with the department. But I don't understand the connections yet. I'm going to make sure Flack brings her straight here," he answered calling up to Flack's personal desk knowing he had to be aware.
"Mac, I know I work early but come on," he greeted and Mac chuckled. "It's about Ryne isn't it? No offence you don't often call really early unless it has something to do with your little princess. So what's she need and what am I doing?"
"Taking her to school and then bringing her here after classes. Sid and I need to find out what she knows. She's in hiding from someone in New York. We just saw a common pattern in some photos we have with Rayne in them. She always has one hand clasped around something that's resting on her neck. She's keeping something hidden."
"Something that's either identifying or she knows someone is looking for," Flack mused thoughtfully. He then wrote something down and then Mac heard it. "She trusts you Mac. Just find this guy so she can finally be a nine year old girl. Not someone who's always glancing over her shoulders."
"I promised her safety and I will keep it. I just need help keeping it until we find out what she's hiding," he answered and Jo looked at him. "We all know Rayne's memory is good. She might be unsure if it's important. So she's not talking."
"I get it," he answered before Lindsay pulled something up and it revealed an image of the school evacuated. "Look Mac, I got to go. I'm not going to try and cause alarm, but it looks like we are onto who's trying for Rayne's life. I just got called down to New York Prep. Her school is being locked down. We have an active shooter."
"I'll be down there too," he responded.
"Lindsay, you and I need to find something through all of this. Something more concrete to give us a hint as to what's inside that hidden object in Rayne's hand," Jo decided and she nodded knowing that they were going to be in charge of helping Rayne.
Mac had left so that meant that Jo was in charge. As they looked over the pictures they finally saw something coming out. "Looks like Rayne's starting to have issues covering it up. Meaning for a moment she thought there was a blanket of security. That she was safe," Lindsay noted.
"I have a few more pictures," Danny informed bringing them in and they all looked to see small pieces were revealed at different locations on the picture. "Looks like the most recent was the bottom left. But let's take these pieces and see what we can make of them," he added.
Lindsay, Adam, Jo and Danny worked on the picture before realizing it. "She's covering a pendant. One that we've seen," Jo answered as she pulled up some security footage and saw the necklace. "It's a butterfly necklace. It must have something on the inside."
"We better call Mac," Lindsay decided and as she dialled she frowned as she tried again. "His phone's not even getting through to mine. So something's wrong," she decided.
"A signal jam. I can't get anything within a 5 block radius of New York Prep," Adam answered. Jo and Danny immediately grabbed their guns and followed Lindsay down to the cars and they rushed down to the school to see Mac and Flack looking pensive.
"What's the update on Rayne? Did she get out?"
"No. But we can't even get near the building without knowing what we're up against. We just know there's a shooter," Flack answered. He revealed all the folders. "All classes have an emergency procedures manual. Rayne wasn't in class. She had just been excused to go to the washroom. No teacher recorded that she was with their group and couldn't find her's. So we have to presume that Rayne's still inside somewhere and she's hiding from the shooter."
"What about you guys? Do we have anything about this situation or the case we were working? Something big," Mac answered.
"There's a signal jam for 5 blocks. We couldn't call you to tell you we found the item Rayne's hiding," Jo informed and he looked at her shocked. He watched her pull out a picture from their security cameras of Rayne wearing a necklace. "This necklace is what she was covering. So something about it, she knows isn't right."
"But wha-?" Mac was about to continue before they heard it.
"Flack?" Everyone looked around and then at the building. "Flack? I'm scared," the voice continued. Lindsay and Jo played back a voice clip they had with the one that they just heard.
"Come on Flack. You know it's not real," the recording of Rayne replayed before they replayed what they just heard and Mac glanced at the monitor to see what he didn't want to. 100% match confirmed. The two voices were the same. Rayne had been the one calling out to Flack.
"Rayne," Mac breathed in panic. He looked at the building and then at windows for any signs of her being near one. "Whoever he is, he knows we're here. He wouldn't take Rayne hostage unless he knows that we're here and we'll do what's necessary to get her back."
"This is Detective Don Flack. We've went from an active shooter inside New York Prep to an active shooter with a hostage," he warned through his walkie talkie as everyone looked at the building shocked. "Rayne, just hang in there," he breathed in worry.
