Volume 1: Melemele Island
Chapter 1: The Rough Rowlet!
[Hau'oli Outskirts]
"Shaarrrpedo!" a Sharpedo exclaimed, very quickly launching out a Hydro Pump attack. The foe's Starmie tried to dodge, but was too slow and was blasted into a wall where a dent was left from the impact.
"Hyaah!" The opponent yelled in pain; the Mysterious Pokémon's red gem glow faded, signifying defeat.
"Wow folks! Get a load of this Pokémon battle! Stay tuned for more coverage on the Battle Frontier's latest battles and aspiring trainers!"
Tyrelle was sitting in front of the television, eagerly watching the Pokémon battle on the screen and clutching a Pichu doll. "Wow! Gran, did you see that battle?" She asked, turning back to her grandmother, who was cooking dinner.
"Nope, I'm busy making dinner, but please describe the battle!" She replied, not looking back.
"Alright! So, basically, Sharpedo went like wham! and ka-pow! and then Starmie was no match for that powerful attack and was defeated before it could land a move! Pokémon battles are awesome!" Tyrelle explained excitedly, her toque nearly falling off.
"Wow, that does sound cool. Who were you cheering for?" She asked, finally looking back at her.
"I was cheering for the trainer with the Sharpedo to defeat Noland, and I think my cheers really got to it! I really want to battle Pokémon some day too!"
"Heh, well it's a darn good thing your tenth birthday passed yesterday. Do you want to try getting your first Pokémon tomorrow? It is pretty late."
Tyrelle merely nodded, approaching the table to prepare for the late night's dinner. Once seated, she began thinking about which starter to get, since she studies a lot about Pokemon in preparation for the long journey ahead. "Could I get Litten, the fire type starter? It's probably pretty feisty and battle-ready. What about the Grass type Pokemon Rowlet? It could be useful to have a flying Pokemon. And then there's Popplio, who is just the cutest!"
She was snapped out of her thoughts as she heard the clank of the dish against the table. "Eat up, sweetie." Her grandmother smiled, before sitting down at the table with her dish. Tyrelle returned to her thoughts, and hardly touched her food. Worried, her grandmother sat up to put a hand on her shoulder and said "Dear, don't worry about tomorrow, worry about today. That is, eat your food please." She sat back down, as Tyrelle rubbed the back of her neck bashfully and began to eat quickly.
It was morning, and the sounds of Pikipek woke up a sleeping Tyrelle, who was groggily clutching her Pichu doll like last night. Rubbing her eyes, she looked out of the window and her face lit up as she very quickly jumped out of bed and into her new trainer clothes, which consisted of a dark-grey jacket, a striped shirt with a design of the 3 Alolan starters dotted around it; a pair of dark blue jeans that were rolled up at the bottom of the leggings, a pair of finger-less gloves and shoes with little blue-grey Poké Ball patterns dotted about, as well as the dark brown toque her grandmother knitted.
Excited, she wasted no time in running to the kitchen for breakfast. "Good morning Gran!" She slowed down to say. Her grandmother flipped a slice of bacon and finished smearing butter over 2 slices of toast.
"Good morning dear, are you excited to start your journey today?" She asked, well aware of the answer. Tyrelle nodded with a big smile before she finally took a whiff of the air. "Woooooow, that smells great! I love your cooking, Gran!" Tyrelle praised, sitting at the table and eagerly awaiting breakfast.
She decided to flip on the TV, and watch an official Pokemon League match. It was against a trainer who was skilfully commanding a little Pikachu, and another trainer who was a little behind in that department, but nevertheless seemed to give the opponent a challenge.
To top off the battle, the trainer with the Pikachu decided to do some poses and have Pikachu unleash a very powerful attack, the opposing Pokemon didn't stand a chance at braving the devastating attack. By the time the battle ended, Tyrelle's eyes were beaming as she got even more excited to start her career as a Pokémon Trainer.
"Here you go sweetie, eat before you head out." She smiled at Tyrelle, who began to dig in.
In another part of Melemele Island, a little Rowlet egg hatched, and the newly hatched Rowlet tilted its head 90 degrees before it started to try flying, and promptly failed miserably and started to tear up, but a delicious smell uplifted its spirits quickly as the Rowlet started awkwardly hopping to the source of the smell, which was from a little house by the shoreline. Undeterred, it tried to fly again and actually made progress, before the balance between both wing flaps was shifted and it began to panic as it attempted to land in the house. It flew right through the window and into a big empty cupboard, which shook it around.
Tyrelle was very quickly alerted to the noise, and noticed through the glass that it was a Pokemon, which she identified as Rowlet. The Grass Quill Pokemon decided it was better now to look around for food, before coming face to face with Tyrelle who was still clutching the Pichu doll. "Aha! I knew it, a Rowlet! But what is it doing here?" She asked herself, before the Rowlet began hooting frantically trying to explain its situation. Simply tilting her head, she shrugged and grabbed it gently.
Now seated at her chair, Tyrelle was petting the Rowlet's head, to which the Pokemon cooed. Her grandmother set another little plate on the table, which had a slice of toast and a fried egg. "I assume this little one decided to drop in because of the scent of our breakfast, right?" She said, looking at the Rowlet with a sweet smile. It simply nodded, with a hoot.
Cleaning her dish, and the little dish for the Pokemon, Tyrelle stood at the front door of her house and took a deep breath. "So it begins... My journey with Pokemon starts today!" She said, opening the door and about to bolt, when her grandmother cleared her throat to get her attention.
"Forgetting something?" She said with a knowing smile. Tyrelle nodded, and bashfully rubbed the back of her neck again. They hugged each other, and her grandmother let go first before kneeling down. "Tyrelle, I want you to promise me that, no matter what, you will never give up even in the face of danger, understand?"
Tyrelle nodded. "Don't worry, I'll be just fine. I love you Gran." She said. Her grandmother simply smiled, and got up again to clean Tyrelle's room.
With a renewed determination, Tyrelle set off to the Pokemon professors's lab, with Rowlet in tow and her very own backpack meant for hard working trainers she began to dart off on the dirt path, which she knows goes straight to the lab. Rowlet, not wanting to be left behind, very quickly flapped its wings and perched itself on Tyrelle's shoulders.
"Alright! Today is a great day in the history of ever, as the world's greatest Pokemon trainer starts her journey!" Tyrelle said to herself, nearly waking up the napping Rowlet, who decided her bag is a good napping place.
An excited Tyrelle begins her journey as a Pokémon Trainer today, with a Rowlet by her side. What adventures will await her? Find out, as the journey begins!
