Catalina has spent later that night preparing dinner after a long day of organizing her troops. It's been more than a week ever since Marisol had been taken away. Everyone through the town had broken into a panic. But that didn't stop Catalina from putting her foot down. She had made strict rules like don't stay or go anywhere after dark, patrols are not to go at least a mile from the territory if anything send suspiciously, or if have some kind of secret alliances with Miguel you will be killed on sight.
She looked back at Sapphire who had her head buried in her crossed arms on the kitchen table. She frowned sadly at the sight of her niece having to be without her mother. So she granted her sister's wishes by taking care of her until she returned.
"Hey, gem," she forced a smile, "dinner'll be done in a few."
Sapphire just stayed quiet still sitting in the position.
"It's your favorite, stewed beef with carrots," she tried to perk her up a bit but it wasn't working.
Catalina sighed, it wasn't like she didn't know what to do with being a mother herself. She just didn't know how Marisol mothered her. She felt so bad being away from her all day long with having to tend to her own duties and being a leader at the same time.
It was all too overwhelming.
When she was done cooking she went ahead and poured the steaming fresh stew into two bowls for them. She handed one to Sapphire before getting hers sitting across from her. As Catalina ate Sapphire still had her head down.
"Sapphire, you need to eat," Catalina spoke firmly, "you have to have your strength."
"I'm not hungry," she mumbled in her crossed arms.
She began to get impatient, "Eat, now."
At that, Sapphire finally lifted up his head grabbing her spoon, and started eating. Catalina noticed that her eyes were red and glossy. Rockie told her that she has been crying a lot this morning not being able to cheer her up. She sighed turning away with guilt.
"I'm sorry, gem, that was really wrong of me to talk to you like that."
Her expression was blank, "It's okay, Aunt Cat, I understand."
She raised a brow, "Understand what?"
"That. . .you miss mom."
Catalina squeezed her eyes shut trying not to get to teared up, "N-no, it shouldn't be an excuse for me to act like that."
"But. . .don't you miss her?"
"I do, gem, but we're gonna get her back, I promise."
She looked down in her bowl, "There's something I wanted to ask mom about but I was scared she might get mad at me."
"What is it?" Catalina asked curiously.
"My dad, I wanted to go see him after the surgery to see how he's doing."
Catalina almost choked on her food, she could see Marisol right now getting pissed at her request. But she stayed calm and tried to do what her sister would've done.
"Gem, I don't think it's the right time for you to see him, especially when your mother's not around."
Sapphire sighed trying not to argue, "Alright, but I can still see him?"
"Soon."
Hopefully not.
Moments later, a knock came at the door. Catalina rolled her eyes in annoyance having to deal with another issue late tonight. When got up and opened the door, she blinked at the visitors were Cobra and Coyote.
"Um. . .what are you two doing here this late?"
Cobra looked away while Coyote spoke for them, "We just wanted you to know that we're leaving tomorrow morning."
Her eyes widened, "For what?"
"We have to make sure that Matt stays where he is right now to keep him from getting captured."
She then looked over to Cobra who's head was still hung down, "Did Victoria approve of this?"
He just simply nodded stiffly.
Coyote sighed heavily her eyes full of sadness and guilt, "I should have been there with you when Miguel got a hold of you. I'm just. . .I'm just so fucking careless."
She touched her shoulder squeezing it reassuringly giving her a half-smile, "No need to apologize, honestly, for once, that was the only time that I'm actually happy you didn't listen to me."
"I wish I did then maybe things would've turned out a lot differently."
Catalina chose not to argue any further as there were bigger issues they had to discuss. She stepped aside letting them in then went over to sit on the couch. When Sapphire saw Cobra her face brightened some when he looked back with a small grin.
"So, do you have a map to where he is?" she asked.
Coyote pulled out the map from her pocket spreading it out on the glass coffee table. Catalina took a closer look seeing if this was close to where they were in case if Moo had to move farther away.
Luckily, it was. Far enough for Miguel not to find him.
"He gave this to Tori in case she worried."
She nodded, "I see, so you two heading out early?"
"Early as I've ever been."
"Riiight. . ." she folded the map back anding it to Coyote.
"I won't be able to lead you two out tomorrow, I'll have some guards go with you instead," Catalina ran her hand over her face groaning, "I'm just busy with so much shit I just don't know what to do."
Coyote smiled, "I think you're doing a great job, sergeant."
"I appreciate that."
Catalina got up leading them back to the door walking them out, "You two best be going, you need a lot of energy tomorrow, and it's past curfew."
Coyote went ahead and wrapped her arms around Catalina. She felt both confused and weirded out, but she couldn't help but hesitantly hug her back.
"Thank you for all you've done for me, sargent, really, I couldn't have had a better mentor than you."
Catalina then started to get a little teary-eyed, "You're welcome, just. . .just make it back safe, okay?"
She pulled away and nodded, "You have my word."
She looked to Cobra who just still remain quiet. She knitted her brows in concern about what was bothering him.
"Cobra, are you going to be fine, even with your leg?"
He again just nodded.
She sighed, "Okay, it's settled then, I'll tell some of my men to get up early to walk you two out."
"Yes ma'am, we'll make sure that Moo doesn't know about this and stay where he is so he won't be Miguel's pet."
Early that next morning Coyote had her bag packed sitting at the edge of her bed ready to leave. She looked and sighed at her messy room, knowing that she'll miss the soft comfort of her home. She walked over to her night stand picking up an old frame photo of her when she was a little kid with her older brother's arm around her shoulders with both planting big smiles.
She remembered very little of this picture, but she did know how much love she had for her brother. They were always together through thick and thin when their mother would leave them all the time just to go party with her friends. They always understood each other when nobody else did, tell each other's secrets, and laugh and cried together. The two of them were just the bestest friends.
Until their father came back into the picture. She grimaced at thought of even thinking about him, but most of all: she hated him for taking her brother away from her along with their mother. He always go along with his plans, hurt innocent people, just being this monterous lapdog. Now he was this person she didn't even know anymore.
But she tried not to think about too much right now as she grabbed her bag heading out of her apartment.
When she made it to where her brother and Victoria lives she started to honk the horn multiple times for Cobra to come out. She laid back waiting for quite a while before Cobra came out. She furrowed her brows by the way he looked this morning, his clothes were baggy, his eyes were pink with tiredness and his hair—that was usually brushed and neat—was messy and untamed.
The main thing she noticed that he didn't carry out at least a small luggage bag like he usually did when they went out of Charlottesville.
She smiled brightly at him while he just looked at her with a tired expression getting into the passenger's seat of the cart.
"Ready to go, king Cobra?" she chirped.
"I guess," he rasped.
She started the cart back up pulling out from the driveway exiting the gates taking off to gates of the town.
By the time she got there, two guards were standing on each side of the gates. One of them was one of Catalina's head soldiers while she knew the other one from training was Catalina's son, Ashley.
He walked over not even attempting to put on a serious face like the other guard. He gave her a toothy grin walking up to them as she smiled back.
"You leaving us, Coyote?" he asked pretending to whine."
"Yep, Ash, gotta go see my brother."
"Oh! When you're over there, can tell my fam' I said 'hey', and ask Storm did she hit yet."
"Ash!" she slapped his arm while he just laughed.
The other guard that was still by the gate rolled his eyes impatiently, "They don't have time for this, cadet, they got up early for a reason, not for you to socialize more."
He groaned back, "Okay, okay, commander, I was just sayin' goodbye."
"Well you're time's up."
As Ashley walked back over to his post the commander called for Cash to open the gates to let out out. Cash went ahead to open it while said his goodbyes from below with Coyote calling back. The two walked beside the cart leading them out.
Before Coyote could head out Ashley yelled for her, "Come back in one piece, I wanna see more of you!"
She giggled, "Not if your mom tears you into pieces first!"
After their final goodbyes, she and Cobra were off.
As Coyote was driving Cobra didn't say one word to her for an hour and more while on the road. Usually he was so talkative almost like she was when there was no else to talk to. One of the main reasons he didn't want to live alone.
Only time he talked was to give directions as he looked at the map. Other than that he had nothing to say.
"Hey, how do you our brother's doing?" she asked trying to make conversation.
He just shrugged.
"I'm sure he's fine, besides, he got someone to keep him busy."
He shrugged again.
Coyote started to get frustrated, "You know, I thought Mattie was always the quiet one, not king Cobra."
He rolled his eyes at that making Coyote just sighed in defeat.
"Have it your then. I know you'll talk once we see Mattie."
After all day driving, Coyote stopped making camp in the woods. She saw that the sun was setting and that it'll be dark soon. She didn't want to risk not seeing or running into a horde of corpses because of not seeing. So she thought it'll be best to stop for the night.
Coyote started taking out some blankets and pillows for the both of them since Cobra didn't bring anything. While she was setting them up she looked up seeing Cobra standing by some trees looking far out from the opposite way of her.
She furrowed her brows in concern and a little frustrated on the way he's been acting all day. She was finally about sick of it.
"Hey, what's been up you?" she asked harshly but he still ignored her, "hellooo, are you even listening to me? Cobra, this is ridicu—"
"I've been thinking."
She blinked rapidly at him finally talking, "Um. . .about what?"
He still had his back turned, "About mamá, about Matéo, about Mary. I don't want to lose any of them, and if mamá just hands herself to him and Matéo found out she has them, what do I have left?"
She didn't understand, "Cobra, what are you saying?"
He looked back at her with tears shimmering from his eyes, "Coyote, please forgive me on how I acted today, I was so caught up in the stress of losing my mother and a way that I can save her. . ."
He then walked up to her wrapping his arms around her while she just stood there awkwardly not knowing what was going on.
"Coyote, can you promise me that you can keep your mouth shut?"
"I thought we established that the other day."
He shook his head, "No, I mean can I trust you to? Because I. . .I won't be able to stop you from not."
Now she raised a brow at that.
"What?"
"I'm sorry, Coyote, but you're just gonna have to leave without me."
Coyote widened her eyes blinking a few times to see if she was hearing this right, "You can't be serious."
He nodded, "I have to, I'll keep my mother from away from Miguel and maybe, I might can figure out a way to get Mary out too."
She couldn't believe what she was hearing. She knew Cobra couldn't face Miguel and his men alone, and if she went by herself to go see Moo she would be just itching badly to tell him about their brother and his mother.
She quickly grabbed his hand as he pulled away, "You can't do this to us! Mattie is gonna be heart broken if he found out anything happened to you!"
"Then don't tell him where I am," he hissed snatching his hand away from her, "I'll be fine, trust me."
Now Coyote was the one who's eyes were welled up with tears, "Please, Cobra, don't this. . ."
But he just tapped her shoulder with nothing else to say and started walking the direction he faced before. Before he could get too far Coyote had to stop him one last time.
"Wait!" she cried making him stop, "If. . .you see Pablo. . .tell him I. . .I still love him. . ."
Cobra froze for a minute before he continued on disappearing into the darkness.
Coyote fell to her knees beginning to cry. She couldn't believe she would lose both her brother and her only mother figure all at the same time. She couldn't take this anymore, she couldn't keep her mouth shut, not after happened.
She didn't care what Cobra, Catalina, and Victoria told her to do. She was gonna do what she does best and open her mouth.
