Hello. I usually write in german and translated my Fanfiction. I hope it's understandable and enjoyable to read.
It was the fifth of September and it was a clear night. The stars were shining brightly. Anne had sat down with a chair by the open window and leaned her forearms against the window ledge. Anne felt almost winged. She was so happy. She had started college a few days ago. Diana was fortunately able to go to school with her after all, and best of all Gilbert loved her. Her love was not unrequited, as she had thought. She felt quite silly, because at the beginning she had almost hoped that he didn't return her feelings because that was quite romantic, but what she had now was a thousand times better. True love was much better.
As she gazed at the stars, she couldn't help but think if Gilbert was also looking up at the starry sky. She wondered if the stars shone as brightly for him, as it did for her?
The thought clouded her mind because he was not with her. That was the only thing that could dampen her mood.
She took a deep breath to get rid of this depressed feeling in her heart. It didn't work, which was to be expected.
"Aren't the stars beautiful," she said to Diana, who was sitting in her bed still reading a book.
Diana returned her gaze with a smile and stood beside her to look up as well.
"I guess you're right," she said and for a few seconds they lingered there. "I saw you got a letter today."
Anne beamed at her best friend and nodded eagerly. "From Gilbert, I suppose?"
"Yes, he wrote to tell me that school has started for him too, but it seems he will be busy with his studies a lot in the near future. We probably won't see each other again until the Christmas holidays," Anne said sadly at the end.
Diana put a hand on her shoulder sympathetically. "Always remember that you both love each other and if it is true love you will survive the long distance."
Anne sighed loudly. "I hope so.
Later that evening, Anne sat down at her desk, a single candle the only source of light in the room. Diana was already sleeping peacefully.
She still had to write back to Gilbert and in order to send the letter in the morning, it had to be finished tonight.
Dear Gilbert,
I was delighted to receive your letter. How pleased I am that you like it there. I can't get enough of your new experiences - it is as if I am there with you myself. I really must come and visit you - I want to see where you go to school and meet all your schoolmates.
I hope you think of me from time to time and don't forget me.
I miss you more with each passing day and my heart aches for you. I still can't believe it. That someone could ever look at me like that and wanted to kiss me. You have fulfilled all my wildest dreams.
Are you sure, Gilbert?
What I'm about to write, isn't easy for me, but it's been gnawing at me for a long time.
Here it goes, of course I would understand if you found someone prettier in Toronto and could no longer love me. I'm not saying it wouldn't hurt me. I just want the best for you, because I love you and to tell you the full truth I don't know what you could see in me. I know what I look like and I don't look like a Diana. I'm pale, I have red hair and freckles.
I'm sorry, I don't want to scare you away in any way, but all this is puzzling to me. I feel like I just don't deserve you.
I wish you were here to calm me. I wish I hadn't torn up your wonderful letter and that we'd had more time together, but it is what it is.
I can't even think about the fact that I have to wait another four months to see you again. It hurts my heart.
Your loving Anne
Anne sat back and looked at her written letter. She had decided to tell Gilbert about her worries. For a long time she had been unable to dismiss these thoughts. Even though she now was fine with the way she looked, but she found it extremely surprising that he should like the way she looked.
Anne had never considered that anyone could ever be interested in her like that, after all.
She folded up the piece of paper and put it in an envelope.
As she lay down in bed and closed her eyes, she saw his face before her eyes. His eyes glowed and looked into hers. She thought about the moment before he had left, how he had jumped out of the carriage and kissed her smiling.
That had been real and a tear crept into the corner of her eye at the thought. She missed him so much.
After two months, it became more and more difficult. The distance became almost unbearable and there was a reason for that. She hadn't received a letter from Gilbert for a fortnight and the last one had been rather sparse. She had waited patiently at first and had not wondered about it. He must have been busy with his studies, but he usually wrote her at least one letter a week.
In panic she worried if he had already forgotten her and found someone else. Tears had crept into the corners of her eyes and that was how Diana had found her in their shared room.
"I'm sure he's already finished with me," Anne said upset, and threw herself into her arms. Diana stroked her back with her hands understandingly. "Don't conjure up the worst now, I'm sure there's a plausible explanation and maybe he really doesn't have time right now."
"Yes, but what if he doesn't? I can't stand not knowing what's going on and maybe he's planning to break up with me when we meet again at Christmas - that's why his last letter was so short. I'm sure he's already found someone else in Toronto, someone who's always there and someone prettier."
Diana broke away from the embrace so she could look at her friend. "Now listen to me Anne, you are beautiful and if he thinks otherwise he is stupid and doesn't deserve you. Besides, you're making up the worst things in your head right now, so stop it right now," Diana sighed loudly. "I have an idea, please tell me what you think - of course you don't have to take my advice."
Anne frowned slightly and nodded. "I suggest that tomorrow after school you catch the next train to Toronto immediately and confront him yourself. You'd be with him Saturday afternoon and you could talk it out. I think he had to leave so quickly, that a lot of things were left unsaid. Of course, you wrote several letters, but it's not the same. What do you think?"
Anne smiled lightly and hugged her stormily. "I think it's the only right thing to do. I can't wait until it's Christmas and wait for him to end this with us - I need to be certain now. Thank you, Diana."
"It's alright."
The next school day felt longer than usual. The minutes just wouldn't go by, maybe because she didn't feel like going to school for once. She couldn't leave Queens fast enough today.
She had already packed her bag with her things because she didn't want to waste any time. Anne stowed her books in her room and together with Diana she went to the station. The train was due to arrive in ten minutes, so she didn't have long to wait.
Diana suddenly hugged her tightly and for a moment they stayed like that. "Promise me you won't worry about what to expect. I saw in Gilbert's eyes how much he loves you. Remember how he ran to you when I told him about the letter you wrote to him. He dropped everything for you. Remember that. I hope you come back happier than you are now."
"I hope so too," Anne smiled, suddenly looking down at herself. "How do I look?" Her voice sounded almost panicked now.
She had dressed especially nicely for today. Anne had been so excited last night and had tried on quite a few outfits again and again. She couldn't wait to see Gilbert and wanted to look beautiful for him. Diana and Ruby had helped her find the right outfit, but she still had to ask again.
She had decided on a light green skirt, with a white blouse and also a green jacket. To match, she wore a green hat and beige gloves.
Aunt Josephine had lent her the same outfit on time and had even given it to her later. She hadn't worn this outfit for a long time and had completely forgotten that it was in her wardrobe.
"Take it easy," Diana said in a calm voice. "You look stunning - everything is perfect."
Anne exhaled reassuringly and just then the train pulled into the station. "Thank you."
As the journey took more than twenty hours, she had booked the cabin with sleeping facilities on the train. Anne shared the compartment with six other travellers, but she didn't mind. A bed was a bed and at least men and women were separated.
First she went to the dining car to eat something beforehand. Then she went to the compartment she had booked and lay down in an empty bed. She put her hat, shoes and bag under the bed.
Anne grabbed the only book she had taken with her and started reading from where she had left off. It was Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.
She deliberately immersed herself in the book, at least as best she could. She didn't want to think about what might be waiting for her in Toronto.
She thought only of what Diana had told her. Gilbert loved her and she had to believe that.
After a few hours, it had already become dark, she felt her eyelids getting heavy. Anne put her book under the bed and closed her eyes, but suddenly she was no longer tired at all and could not shake off her nervousness.
For some unfathomable reason she suddenly thought of Ruby and the other girls, how they had all reacted when they had heard about her and Gilbert.
Of course, they had all been very surprised. About the fact that Anne had been interested in Gilbert at all and that Gilbert had returned her feelings. Josie in particular had been exceedingly surprised about the latter. Anne tried not to take it personally, because she knew her friend very well.
Jane and Tillie, after the initial shock, had been very happy for her and had giggled like mad.
She had been a little scared especially about Ruby's reaction. She knew how long Ruby had a crush on Gilbert, but apparently that wasn't the case at all anymore.
"We weren't right together anyway," Ruby had said. "I've come to terms with the fact that he's probably never interested in me anyway and I'm happy for you Anne, honestly." It had sounded sincere and Anne was glad.
"Besides... I think I like Moody better," Ruby had added.
All the girls turned their heads to her in confusion, and that closed the subject of Gilbert for now.
Another hour passed before she finally fell asleep.
She awoke well-rested and with a hungry stomach. She was glad of the complimentary breakfast and sat down at an empty table in the dining room.
The day was beautiful, the sun was shining brightly and she could hardly wait to go outside and breathe in the fresh air.
"Excuse me, miss?" she was suddenly addressed and she looked up in confusion. A young man with a child of about five in his arms stood in front of her. "Is this seat free?"
He pointed to the seat opposite her. "Of course, sure," she said quickly, smiling at them both.
A single father wasn't something you saw every day. She chatted with them for about half an hour before going back to her compartment and waited to finally arrive.
It would take another two and a half hours and Anne felt the tension growing more and more. She could almost hear her heart beating louder and faster.
When there were only ten minutes left, she went to the toilet cubicle and fixed her hair. She looked almost the same as when she had said goodbye to Diana. You almost couldn't tell she'd had a very long journey, well almost.
Anne was sitting on a bench at the train station in Toronto. She had sat there twenty minutes ago and hadn't moved since.
Damn it, get up already!, she said angrily to herself. You can do that!
Breathing in and out loudly, she stood up and finally left the station. She asked the first person where the university was and then walked purposefully along the path. There were many people on the streets and she had to be careful not to get lost.
At some point she noticed that two students in front of her were taking exactly the same route as she was, and now somewhat reassured, she followed them.
It wasn't long before she was standing in front of the large university building. It looked stunning and she could well imagine how beautiful it must be here.
"Excuse me, miss?" someone asked her from behind and she turned expectantly. It was a boy about her age. He had brown hair and looked very friendly.
"Excuse me for asking, but are you new here? You look a little lost."
"Is it that obvious," she said with a smile. "I'm looking for my... a friend. He goes to school here - his name is Gilbert Blythe. Do you know him by any chance?"
He laughed softly. "As it happens I do know him, you're in luck. We have a few lessons together."
"Would you take me to him?" said Anne, so glad that he had spoken to her. It made everything so much easier.
"Of course. I'm Ethan, by the way, and you are?"
"I'm Anne."
He walked past the main building and they walked down a path to the student residence. "He'll probably be in his room, though it's Saturday so no school. Let's go see."
Anne nodded. They entered the building and he walked purposefully to the second floor. "You're lucky I happened to be with him a few weeks ago. Otherwise I wouldn't know where his room is."
At once he stopped in front of a certain door. "So, here we are." He knocked firmly on the door and they waited a few seconds.
Anne unconsciously stood behind Ethan. She felt so unsure. Would Gilbert be pleased or would he be annoyed when he saw her?
The door opened and she saw Gilbert's face in front of Ethan. Her heart leapt. She was still hiding slightly behind him and that was why Gilbert didn't see her.
He still looked the same as when they had last seen each other.
"Sorry to disturb you, but this pretty lady is looking for you," Ethan said, suddenly noticing that she was standing behind him and now taking a step to the left.
"Anne?" exclaimed Gilbert in surprise.
She couldn't look him in the eye and instead stared at the ground.
Suddenly she felt herself being pulled into a tight embrace. "Anne!" Tears came to her eyes as she felt his nearness and caught his unmistakable scent. She now wrapped her arms around him too. "Gilbert!"
As they disengaged, Anne realised Ethan was still there and blushed embarrassingly. "I'm sorry," she said quickly to him.
He waved it off. "I'll be off then. It was obvious that such a pretty girl was already taken. It was nice to meet you, Anne."
"Nice to meet you too," she smiled and waved a goodbye.
