His Neighbor's Girlfriend

AU: Everyone thought love happens in an instant. No, it happens gradually. Love at first sight is a myth. An instant attraction can take place the first time two people lay their eyes on each other, but true love requires more time to truly develop. Especially if the girl is his neighbor's girlfriend. This is a story of how he met her and what comes after. LEVI X MIKASA.

Chapter 1

They say, love at first sight is a magical and a sacred phenomenon for those lucky enough to experience the encounter.

Love for Levi is an unfamiliar territory he dares not to venture. Even as a famed artist, his works never featured love as an inspiration. Being famous in the art world and taking home major awards without too much effort, he is well-known for his realistic paintings. His art brings people into another universe. It absorbs them.

He is an excellent artist, no doubt. But he sucks at socializing. He is blatant and rude. He disregards people's feelings. He just says whatever comes to mind. And he finds it hard to express himself with words. However, he is a man with oozing talent and passion, so overflowing, that people can't help but admire from afar.

His musings and inspirations come from nature. Not people. He hates people. In fact, he only has two friends – both of which had gone to extreme troubles to be considered as one. Levi will not deny, he is a difficult person. One friend is his manager while the other is a former prospective rival which eventually took another path, away from art.

The first time he sees her, she catches his eyes.

And seriously, for someone like Levi to take interest in someone – the world must be ending.

She has shoulder-length black hair, cold grey eyes, pale skin, slender body and is quite tall. She is calmly kicking his neighbor's door like there's nothing unusual with whatever she's doing.

Who wouldn't stop to watch? After all, it's not every day one sees a straight-faced woman breaking a police officer's door with a clean kick.

Said neighbor used to be an aspiring painter. He never fails to show Levi how much he adores him every time he gets the chance. And in an unexpected turn of events, he becomes a police officer recently. Levi unintentionally learned his name is Eren Jeager, thanks to his amazing persistence to introduce himself to him every damn time. Eren brings home multiple women of different types and ages for as long as Levi can remember. A true lover of the ladies as he dubs him.

Just the other week, he found Eren kissing a blonde girl in the elevator. And the week before that, he came out from his apartment with a brunette, clothes in disarray. Not that Levi is being nosy, but it's hard not to notice.

If Levi wishes, he could have moved into a better place nearer to the art capital of the country. His manager proposed of course, but he declined. He prefers the tranquility Shiganshina offers. It is nearer to nature too. Fresher air than the major cities and cleaner streets. And the people in their neighborhood had long given up in getting a reaction from him. Because ignoring people is what he does best next to art.

Levi stares, he doesn't care if he seemed rude, almost feeling sorry for his neighbor's misfortune to come home with his door broken and a fuming girl masked with apathetic expression waiting to explode. He assumes she may be one of those smart ones that caught on Eren's infidelity issues.

And when their eyes meet briefly, Levi stops breathing and it feels like the world has stopped spinning as well. His fingers are itching for his paintbrush and canvas, or whatever that he can use to capture the intensity of her soul. Like how people describe their feelings when they see Levi's paintings, he feels like he is also absorbed into another universe. Her eyes are cold, so deep and mysterious he wants to peel its layers and unveil more emotions. She gives him the sense of an ambiguous intensity of looking someone in the eye that feels simultaneously invasive and vulnerable.

The pitter patter of the rain and her head turning away breaks the spell and Levi frowns. As his door clicks unlock, he enters his own apartment but not before he notes the faint blush creeping on the girl's cheek. She must have been embarrassed that a stranger saw her and stared at her like that.

He wishes she was unaware on how she had caught his usually evasive eyes.

Levi will not call it love at first sight. It may be attraction, but not love.

And attraction fades.

That day, on an empty canvas, he paints the tempestuous weather with multiple shades of grey resembling her eyes and creates another magnum opus that will go down in history.
