17. The mask of beauty

Lila and Chloe looked at each other in disbelief. What was going to be a night of fun was now a humiliation parade.

"When did you make such arrangement?"

"This morning. Fu Lenoir asked me and I couldn't refuse."

Gabriel glared at Adrien, coldly analyzing him.

"Evil hides behind many masks, none as dangerous and deceitful as the one of beauty. Are you aware of that?"

He nodded.

"I am and I am not drawn to women solely because of their beauty, but because of their wits and dignity."

Gabriel didn't make a single sound nor did his face move. But Adrien could see the despicable hatred in his eyes that he had grown up looking at.

"I should think so. You have taken a liking to this girl, I presume. Must I remind you that the circumstances of her birth remain unclear to this day? Does she not bear only the name of her mother?"

"Indeed she does. But said circumstances are none of my concern as they are not of yours. Miss Lenoir is a perfectly well-mannered and behaved woman and I appreciate her company."

"You do not decide what is and what is not of my concern. You will go with Miss Lenoir and you will learn why is it that she bears the name of her mother's family."

Adrien maintained his flawless countenance while leaving his house, but once in the azure velvet of the insides of his carriage, he cursed to the air and threw his fist to the wooden door. Marinette's safety on the upcoming madness depended on what information he brought back to his father.
