Chapter 13
The black Sleestak emerged in the Beige Universe near his counterpart's cave. Quickly, he found himself surrounded by green Sleestak. Just by looking at them, he determined that they were as inferior as the ones in his own universe. They had no telepathic abilities and they could only speak in a primitive Altrusian dialect.
Enik decided that the best place to begin was in this universe's Library of Skulls. Because the Beige Universe's Lost City was so much like his own, he found the Library with ease. Soon, he met face to face with the Sleestak leader.
"Are you the one the skull spoke of?" the leader asked, in English.
Enik was a bit surprised. "You know of me?"
"The skull spoke of a stranger from another universe who would arrive with a plan to rid us of the humans."
Enik looked down upon this leader, but he was impressed with the skulls. Though he did not like the Sleestak, he felt that with a twelve-hour time limit, he should use them as allies. "I am Enik, and I do come from another universe. To explain more would be beyond your understanding, but know that I come to seek revenge on the Marshalls, who once interfered with my plans and caused the destruction of my best means for returning home. You will assist me."
The Sleestak leader was only too willing to comply. "The Marshalls have been a threat for too long. We will do anything to get rid of them."
Pleased, Enik responded, "Excellent. My plan is simple, but time is short. I require a Marshall. Capture one of them and bring the human to me."
"We will obey, Enik."
As the Sleestak leader turned to walk away, Enik spoke up yet again. "On second thought, capture the human female. She is the one I prefer."
"It will be done."
The Sleestak leader then ordered several of his soldiers to attack the Marshalls.
As the sun set on another day in the Land of the Lost, the Marshalls returned to their temple, only to be welcomed by a very rude greeting.
"SLEESTAK!" Holly cried out, as the too familiar hissing filled her ears.
"Chaka! Light some torches! Will! Give me a hand!" ordered Jack.
The paku ran into the temple and Will, Holly and Jack tried to fight off the attackers with any weapon they could find. Finally, Chaka returned with three lit torches and quickly gave two to Will and Jack, keeping one for himself as he joined the fight.
Jack knew that eons of living in the darkness of the Lost City had caused the Sleestak's eyes to become very sensitive to sudden bursts of light. Thus, the brightness of fire was a valuable weapon against any Sleestak attack. The family shined the torches near their enemies' eyes, causing them to retreat. But the damage was done. When the dust settled, Holly was gone.
